same. Thru the power of youtube I learned that I am able to change the oil myself and would destroy my bike in the slightest attempt adjusting the valve clearances.
Last year, I saw this video and decided it was too hard…but it cost A$750 and the valves were fine lol. This year I came back here and did it myself. A couple a little tight, annoyingly needed 2 of the same size shim &ordered a new shim. Took me most of Friday night to take it apart the first time, but going back in to fit the other shim was way faster. That’s a few hundred bucks I’m happy I saved tbh. Only thing I.ll change for next year is stock up on shims before hand lol. I have the Haynes manual but this video really helped! Oh and I.m not buying another bike without first finding out how awful it is to work on lol
Thanks for the video, I think I have just gone off the idea of getting a 500x. 🤔.All that hassle just to get at the plugs should you want to never mind the valves.
It’s the same with all modern machines pretty much I’m afraid.the CBR650r is worse still.the. At least with the 500 motor the service intervals are long (16,000miles for the valves)
@@Stillbusy105 well I’d follow the mileage to be honest. I change the oil and filter every year even if the distance is small but the valve gap won’t change it it ain’t running it seems to me
Great video thanks. Everytime I consider buying a new motorcycle I look for a video like this that makes me not buy it. Bike manufacturers do themselves no favours making it so hard to do maintenance.
@@bikerdood1100 There is no need to even remove the spark plugs unless u want to change them. Get a decent size sprocket wrench and you can easily turn it. Since the bike doesn't even have that big of a compression due to the design
Це жах як все складно в цих нових хондах в моїй немолодій cb-500 набаго все простіше я вже не хочу ці нові технології ,чим новіші мотоцикли тим все складніші і складніші.
Hi Sorry for the late reply Exhaust- 0.27mm +\- 0.03mm 0.011” +\- 0.001” Inlet - 0.16mm +\- 0.03mm 0.006” +\- 0.001” According to the Honda Manual Hope this helps
It’s not bad One big difference with the ZZZR would be access With these Oder fuel injection thinks getting to the engine valve cover is a total pain Did them on a GSXR and my old CBR previously and access was far easier
How did you remove the intake rocker shaft (the rear one) with that Givi crash bar in the way? I found that part of the crash bar blocks me from removing the shaft, i ended up having to, ahem, reshape the crash bar with an angle grinder. Or maybe things are located slightly differently on my '17 cb500x..
I agree with the other comments here, about how complicated bikes are to work on anymore. Even my XT250, has more crap to come off of it, than it needs to have. Still much simpler than this bike but...WTF? I hate to say this but, this makes me look forward to improved electric vehicle technology, if they can ever improve range and charge times...no valves, plugs or other crap.
@@bikerdood1100 If I had a Guzzi dealer closer to where I live and could get parts via internet as easy as I can for my Jap bike, I'd be on one in a heartbeat. Nothing sounds like a Goose.
@@bikerdood1100 Oh I am sorry, I was meaning the oil change.. Do you follow the manual, or do the oil change earlier? Most people suggest half what the manual says.
I can't believe the spark plug is underneath all that equipment, on my 125 it's on the side of the bike and a simple 2 minute change. I'm not looking forward to having to change it on the 500x....
Well I’ve had the tank and panels off before so I’ve had some practice. Never the less this took me over an hour just to get down to the cylinder, another half an hour to 45 minutes removing the cover and checked the valves themselves plus a hour reassembly and as you can imagine for a non professional like my self you’ve spent 3 hours plus from beginning to end but saved yourself a lot of cash .
Hey, thanks for this nice tutorial. It's very pleasant. I have a question though : what is the diameter of valve shims ? I want to buy a pack but i have choice between various size (7.48 mm, 9.48 mm or 10 mm...).
What a complete and utter faff! The CB500x is a lovely little bike but this is really a deal breaker. Shims are a PITA for the home mechanic and I reckon a lot of dealers will just tick the box and take the money rather than do all this work.
To be honest having watched other videos it’s pretty much par for the course for modern fuel injected bikes with OHC engines. Some bikes are even harder. Hence my love of Moto Guzzi , Can do a V7 valves with the gas tank still on .As for the Honda it’s just the way it is these days I’m afraid.
i dodnt know why they didnt make it like the nc750 screw and locknut even worse the africa twin has got both shims (inlet ) and screw and locknut (exhaust) honda using up parts i thinks
@@crispernator Because the engine in the NC750 is SOHC. If you use screw and locknut on a DOHC engine, which the CB500 has, it will become a very bulky and heavy valve train and make the engine less effective. That's why every DOHC use tappet.
@@cxn_media your probably right all i know is i am dreading the day to do this job it s just as much of a pain to change the plugs i went iridium so i have 100,000 km before i may have to do it again
How did you remove the breather/pipe at 7:08? I can't pull it out no matter how hard I try. Even if I do I think I'll have to apply some lube to put it back. Any advice ?
@@bikerdood1100 thank you for your very quick reply! I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully with a good pair of gloves and a renewed determination I will manage!
