Mainland China and Taiwan don't use different names for the islands. It's the same, just spelled different in English. Mainland China calls is Diaoyutai and Taiwan calls them Tiaoyu Tai, but they're both written 钓鱼台 / 釣魚臺. The name of the island means "Fishing Platform."

@@pizzzzzzzza8532 China does not claim the Ryukyu Islands. The only island China (PRC) is having a dispute with Japan is the Diaoyu Islands which Taiwan (ROC) also claims. A few Chinese people consider that the Ryukyu Islands has a historical "connection" with China, those people don't claim these islands should be a part of China but they reckon the islanders should have the right to conduct self-determination to decide whether they want to be their own nation. Obviously something is not right here! The fact that notorious Anglo Western clans are major participants & benefactors of Colonization worldwide, stretching from North America, the land rightfully belongs to indigenous Native American people to Australia/New Zealand in Asia-Pacific, the land rightfully belongs to Native people of Asia Pacific region. - Here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, where else in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants... A similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Do you know that their living room and bedroom are the same place, and that most Japanese people sleep in their living room? - While European Colonizers such as Britain and Russia have already Colonized half of Asia, stretching from Australia/New Zealand, to Siberia/Far-East, all in the Asia-Pacific region.., Native people of Asia-Pacific are fighting for a few tiny islands left out there in the South China Sea. Obviously something is not right here! - Moreover, all these invaders Colonizers do is dig and empty out all the bountiful abundant natural mineral resources from the looted giant resourceful landmass in Asia-Pacific, and sell them back to Asia-Pacific nations. True, it has been their largest export, earning several hundred billion dollars, every year. - In my very humble opinion, Asia has been under attack from Anglo British, since they sailed halfway around the world from jolly old England in Europe, and looted this vast bountiful so-called Australia landmass in Asia Pacific region in the late 18th century? Why didn't they occupy beautiful fertile Iceland, right above them just a short distance away, with hardly any people there, even today? - May I ask why is Australia, a vast resourceful Continent in Asia-Pacific, only a few hundred miles away from South-East Asia had no Asian-Pacific Islanders in that vast land originally, historically inhabiting when Anglo pirates, some 10,000 miles away England, sailed half the world away, and looted in late 18th century? This doesn't make sense, since Asian-Pacific Islanders originally and historically inhabited and resided in the Pacific islands such as Guam, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii. - May I ask if Anglo clans have any laws at all for dealing with past and present notorious global cardinal crimes like Slavery, Colonialism & Colonization of vast bountiful resourceful Continents, such as North America, which rightfully belongs to indigenous Native Americans, and to Australia and New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region, which rightfully belongs to Native people of Asia Pacific? - In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners. Notorious global cardinal sins & crimes that West has committed and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery and Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on??

It's all about definitions when you speak with Japanese. This is why it is such a powerful trade entity. Using legalism and the geographic distinctions, Japan would have a good case to keep the islands. But let's not beat around the bush. Japan also purposefully kept them largely undeveloped to avoid conflict. This shows an amount of restraint that is normally not shown to another power. They could have, but they didn't. Given current tensions, it would be best for China to fight Japan using its own game, trade legalese. But I'm just a person on the Internet. My notions don't really matter.

I agree, but I think it hardly matters. I don't think China is using that argument to claim the islands. It is using that argument to control the area around the islands. Under normal maritime borders, if those islands were considered part of China, the entire sea between the mainland and the islands would effectively fall under Chinese jurisdiction. So this argument has nothing to do with ownership of the islands. It's more about controlling access to the islands so that no other claims on them can be escalated by their rivals. That may be little more than a bluff, but it has been a very effective bluff in forcing commercial air traffic out of the area.

The deciding factor in these sorts of territorial claims is recency of usage. That’s why, for example, we don’t try to evict the Chinese from China when we discover archaeological evidence that the ancestors of the Ainu or American Indians inhabited that land before the ancestors of the Han Chinese. The recent Han Chinese claims take precedence over the older Ainu and American Indian claims. In the case of the Senkakus, China’s claims are based on maps from several centuries ago. A long time ago and no actual usage except as navigational aids. In contrast, Japan’s claims to the Senkakus are based on actually using the islands for a few months per year every year up until the 1930s mostly to smoke, dry, and ferment fish. Far more recent and involving actual usage of the land and its resources.

In a nutshell, it's history is of failed attempts to colonise it by Argentinian, English and few other nation's entrepreneurs. It was mainly on the periphery of hunting and whaling grounds and was used as a stopping point for whaling vessels of different nations. The only ones who put any real effort into making it liveable, were the English, who had probably the most legitimate claim to the islands. Being Irish, I have no great love for Britain's past scuzzy practices, but they do deserve the Falklands. The Argentine junta used it as an excuse to distract a pissed off nation from wanting to overthrow them and their shitty regime. Port Stanley has really grown over just a few decades. @@tomcatkewell The people of the islands of today's Okinawa Prefecture were given the option to choose for themselves. In the wake of WW2, the Americans were daunted at the task of having to administer the entirety of Japan and wanted those islands to declare independence so the US wouldn't have to administer them. But when a referendum was held, the people of those islands voted to remain part of Japan. Those islands are part of Japan through the usual process-- the people there have the right via the universal natural right of self determination to choose where their sovereignty lies, and they have chosen to be part of Japan. And BTW, the same American desire to not have to administer any more than they had to also applied to the Senkakus. If Chiang Kai-Shek had wanted the Senkakus, the Americans would have been more than happy to hand them over. Instead, the US was stuck having to administer the Senkakus as part of the occupation of Japan. Naturally when the occupation ended, those islands were returned to the Japanese along with everything else.

@tristankawatsuma8962
@tristankawatsuma8962 Год назад
Probably because there hasn't been any actual fighting besides coast guard ships on both sides stopping and sometimes arresting fishermen and nationalists who got too close or tried to land on the islands. At least compared to the other island disputes Japan has with South Korea and Russia, this is an easier one to stand with Japan on. The Kuril Islands were taken by the Russians in WW2 and are inhabited, so I rather not force these people to leave just like how the Soviet Union forced Japanese residents to leave after the war. As for the Liancourt Rocks or Takeshima Islands as Japan calls them, South Korea already has a small outpost. Again, I rather not force people to leave somewhere. And also with the latter, South Korea seems to have more history with the Liancourt Rocks. With the Senkaku Islands on the other hand, not only is there nobody to force off the islands but the islands were actually owned and used by a Japanese company. They belong to the Okinawan Prefecture now. At the very least, Japan has a better case for the Senkaku Islands compared to China's case, Taiwan's case, and Japan's case with the Liancourt Rocks and four southern Kuril Islands they all claim.
@ruedelta
@ruedelta Год назад
@@tristankawatsuma8962 No, they really don't have a good claim to it. Japan annexed the islands while fighting China in the First Sino-Japanese War. It was territory obtained through imperial conquest, to which such lands were returned to China following WW2 (this was the basis of Taiwan retrocession). The company that owned and used it did so only through that colonial conquest.
@tristankawatsuma8962
@tristankawatsuma8962 Год назад
@@ruedelta But the Qing Dynasty despite annexing Taiwan in the 1680s, never did anything with the Senkaku Islands. Nobody ever did. And if anybody actually did do anything, it was just using the islands as a marker, to help them determine their positions. No infrastructure was made and no attempts to claim the islands were made until the Japanese company started up on the island. And China and Taiwan only made their claims in the early 1970s, over two decades after the Pacific War and the Chinese Civil War, after a report on oil in the area was made. Now to be fair, it's just as likely that China and Taiwan simply didn't want to be having this dispute with the United States back when it still controlled Okinawa via military occupation. And of course, I will acknowledge that Japan took full advantage of the First Sino-Japanese War to claim the islands, but Japan can't exactly steal territory if it never belonged to anybody else in the first place.
@ruedelta
@ruedelta Год назад
@@tristankawatsuma8962 You realize how hard it is to build persistent infrastructure on those islands in pre-industrial times, yes? I find this argument to be ridiculous as it ignores any of the hallmarks of pre-industrial usage of such territories - indeed, sighting for ships, fishing in the waters, and landing on it for those fishermen. The usage definition that is used today is one entirely drafted by the colonial powers who wanted to dominate any of their claims by insisting that industrialization legitimized their use above all others through infrastructure. This has long been justification to exile natives from traditional fishing waters. You are also forgetting a crucial thing that happened in 1971 - the seat of China at the UN switched from ROC to PRC. Until then, the PRC had no means to communicate with the US, which owned the land until 1972. You are not going to bring up a dispute with someone you cannot diplomatically communicate with. Not to mention, it is perfectly reasonable for the PRC at that time to expect the US to have only been "holding onto the territory" to give it back to the rightful owners... to which the US handed it back to Japan, validating Japanese conquest of the islands.
