8:20 The problem with Evangelical Bible interpretations
11:00 Christianity in its beginning stages
14:24 Conclusion of difference between Evangelicals and Progressives
17:39 Who ARE the true Christians, then?
19:27 Conspiratorial evangelical Christians in the US
An ex-Christian talks about the differences between Evangelical and Progressive Christianity and why they can't agree on what a "true" Christian is. Why do some Christians insist former Christians were never Christians? Are Evangelicals real Christians? Why are many evangelicals displaying cult-like tendencies lately? Are evangelicals prone to conspiratorial thinking?

Oh yeah. That's what I was told. "Well, you never were a Christian." I was converted at age 19, a believer for 40 years, and an evangelical fundy pastor for 28 years. My deconversion was very gradual. I continued to see many inconsistencies and contradictions in the Bible. I left the faith a age 60.

Why is this awlays the go-to for practicing Christians? I've heard it so much, granted, it is more expected because I was a Mormon. But I've heard it from Mormons too that I never had a testimony. I think this is their first reaction because they internally want to distance themselves from the dissenters. They don't want to even contemplate the possibility that their testimony was in any way like that of the dissenters because that means their faith may fail as well.

You are describing what's colloquially referred to as "harmonization"; apologists are professionals in that field. As I studied and tried to find every reason to keep inerrancy in tact, I realized that these apologists are blowing smoke and hold presuppositions as facts and evidence of biblical inerrancy. The more apologetics I delved into, the faster my faith fell apart. My initial motivation for such deep study was to refute atheists with "sound" reason and logic. Circular reasoning at its finest. BTW from a fellow "exvangelical", I love your content, keep up the good work!

Then they leave with a perplexed look. 😂

Thankyou for this eye-opening video. Living in the UK, the things that surprised me most was that, whereas I identify as an Evangelical in the UK, I would fall squarely into the Progressive camp in the USA. This at least shows how careful we should be when labelling people or labelling each other. Personally, I do not care what tribe I belong to, or even if I am considered a "true Christian". My belief is clearly summarised in the first verse of "amazing Grace", and I am not going to war about any doctrine beyond that.

As for light, put your light above the camera slightly and reduce the camera exposure. If you want to step it up add what's known as key light to shape your face and a background light so that it doesen't look like a cave. The problem with the background light is you have to dress up the background. I wouldn't have said this stuff if you hadn't asked ...because your content kept me involved great job on that! Just an afterthought, if you would move your set back so only the blinds show in the background and you cross light with a color light you would have a clean background.

I'm a Humanist Buddhist. There's nothing wrong with spirituality, believing in something. But it's being aware that belief is just that, it's not fact, it's something one chooses to believe . I heard some more liberal minded Catholics saying they personally don't believe in abortion because of their belief system. But they're fully aware that it is just their belief, not fact, ,and that is why they are pro choice.

Ehrman is one of the most prominent, active New Testament scholars of our generation, obviously unbiased, but yet the entire evangelical community has the main goal of discrediting everything he says. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's easy for Christians to listen and cite only evangelical Christian scholars because, well, most of the scholars of Christianity are Christian. But when one scholar who isn't Christian talks about their texts and history they say, "Oh no, no, he isn't credible. He's not a good source." It's embarrassing to the Christian who says this.

The most anachronistic doctrine about evangelicalism is Sola Scriptura or Bible Alone, which states that just by following the Bible (AKA reading and studying it) you could understand “True” Christian doctrine, when in fact only after the 1900s the developed world had more than 50% of its population thought on how to read. It seems the proper question is not whether someone is (or was) a true (or real) Christian or not (for what does that even mean). Nor even did they really believe it or not (what does that matter anyway in regard to the veracity of what they believe). Rather the paramount issue is whether what they believe (or at least professed to believe) true or not. Thus it is the truth that ultimately matters and not so much the particulars of those who argue for or against it. Yes if one is looking at assigning blame or guilt and culpability then that might matter, but not in assessing truth.

Hi Dee, I came across your content from an interview on another channel. I am a wavering Christian based in the UK who basically attends a church that fall in the 'evangelical's who know their Bibles camp'. Yet due to the amazing source that is the internet I discovered something profound for me on the 18th of December '21, from Bart Ehrman's content and it's rocked my faith significantly. I simply didn't know prior that the differences between the gospels were significantly different. I could detail my own experiences at present, but it would make the comment longer than it need to be. This video helped explain more about progressive Christianity, if I can retain some faith maybe I'll go there. I don't know though, the past four days I've experienced extreme cognitive dissonance, I am mourning the loss of my faith, my belief in the Bible being completely true is completely broken, and I don't know what to base my life on now.

I gave up Christian church doctrine because of definite inconsistencies I found when studying the Bible, which led me to research how the bible itself came to be. That led me to the understanding church doctrine is literally a manmade control system based on fear of hell that is also based on wrong translation of original languages. I believe in an all loving Divine Creator and that we are all connected to this divine Source. You can be spiritual (and you are a spiritual bring) without religion. There is a channel called "Love covered Life" that has helped me, and over the past year she has interviewed many people with near death experiences that support this belief. Hope you find peace that you seek.

The only thing I know about webcam lighting is that you have to spend pretty good money to get pro looking lighting. I have a couple of circle rings in the 18 dollar range and they're horrible. My son works as a grip on the CW shows and says you have to spend about 200 to get something good. If you go with ring lights, they've got to be at least 18". Neewer makes some kits for about 250 that get pretty high ratings. They also take up quite a bit of space, to be considered when buying. Let us know if you have success? I'd like to get a good referral.

I give you credit , as someone who actually thinks. I was a nominal Christian most of my life , moving between evangelicals and progressives like Hillsong. Just accepting whatever i was told. I got to a point in my life where I really started asking the difficult questions and wondering if Christianity is all just wishful thinking, like if God allows evil , how could he be loving. If God is just, where does hell fit in. Why do we need large old book like the bible to discover God. Is the bible really something worth investigating for actual truth. I ended up in a church St helens Bishopsgate London where I could ask the hard questions and get intelligent answers with references. I am not saying its only stupid people that can get misled, or clever people always find truth and are less likly to be decieved. That is obviously not true. I was also not looking for easy answers , or answers that would fit my preferrred narrrative. I ended up being convinced that the bible is more than just a book. Jesus was more than just a historical figure, because of the things he was recorded saying. Things I would not say , to become popular. It has not all been easy, some churches were quite hostile to me even asking questions regarding faith- asking me nicly to leave. I would argue investigating the faith as a proper sceptic is worth doing. If you find a "proper " church happy to help you understand , that is a miracle in it self.

I watched your "I'm out" video yesterday & there were a couple of Muslim's on there essentially suggesting that since you were out of Christianity then you should join their "one true religion". Well OK then. Ask an evangelical about the "Old Testament" vs. the Torah & ask them where those extra five books went. Guess they didn't make the cut...just like all those other gospels in the NT. I used to be from a Dutch denomination. After some time I came to find John Crowder and his take on being drunk on the love of God and "stoned" by the Holy Spirit. I actually had lots of religious experiences because of it... but then one day it all came crashing down when my uncle showed to me that it was "false teachings". I then shut off any religious experience. Nowadays I'm a non-theistic, naturalistic pagan, rooted in the empirical world. So we still can have religious experiences through ritual, but just know it's our mind "playing tricks on us". But the *emotions* however are real, and that's what's important. And it's just a way to celebrate life and acknowledge the 8 phases our planet goes through. Sadly... I haven't been able to experience things like that since that outbursts.. I am trying to reconnect with that "non-rational" side to just embrace emotions and experiences, even if my rational side knows it's just the placebo effect at work. So that's what made me post things, being called false teachings just because it was a different interpretation. Them not being Real Christians as to "what we were". PS: Your video on the Holy Spirit just made me realize how to re-access that portion again... even if I still have to "process this trauma". In a nutshell: acceptance and submission. Like how Christians accept Jesus in their heart, and after baptism "submit themselves to the holy spirit entering" and then experiencing religious experience because of that confirmation bias and actively seeking out spiritual connecting with a deity. I just realized that for me to access religious experiences, knowing full well it's placebo, I need to quiet down my rational and critical mind and accept other state of minds and submit myself to being able to experience them. So thank you for these videos! I've deconverted last year (2021), and all these "former Christian" videos really helped me make sense of what was me, and what was my indoctrination!

Maybe said elsewhere here as well, there are probably a few other types we could categorize and it's futile to do so because then someone will nuance out why that category doesn't quite fit. Fair enough and I myself am very resistant to apply labels or identities to myself. I think these type/categories are most useful only for shorthand or more quickly trying to understand one another. But unfortunately most often, they are used as traps and nice little packages to put people in. I myself, came out of my faith somewhere between a fundy & a progressive; thanks in part to being a former (American) Anglican. I think when as an unbeliever, having a discussion with someone around "was I a true Christian", it may be more fruitful to simply grant how the other person views what that means: someone who was a follower of Jesus and thought they were "in" or (unfortunately more often) that you were never in, no special sauce covering you and you were deceived. But usually if it goes the latter route, the end game isn't to help you, but rather comfort the believer (in my complete judgement). So all this being said, maybe it's just not a conversational hill to die on. Love this content. I know you've more recently decided to shift a bit. But thanks for offering your unique voice to the conversation.

Thank you for being honest. There are many terms and positions on the continuum. You do understand that there is no one who has the final answers to everything. You seem very bright and have now graduated to the camp of those who know what is true and not true. I went through the same debates and doubts in university in Europe and the U.S. (military family), and do understand what you are talking about. I remember two military chaplains I was in small groups with, one in Madrid, Spain and the other when I was in college in Munich, Germany. Chaplains are more liberal and very seldom, if ever came across as evangelical. You have erroneously linked academic historians and scientists as unbiased because they come from a skeptical school of thought. I come from a family of doctors and professors in chemistry/biochemistry, Vanderbilt Univ., etc. We have talked over the years. I am a history teacher and have a degree in reformed theology from a seminary, but you have written seminarians off as being biased. Any theology prof who is honest will tell his/her students that no one school of thought has the final answers and there are many issues to debate. As well, many theology professors have degrees in other areas, such as engineering, English literature, backgrounds in science, philology, etc. I know, because many of my seminary profs did not start out in theology. One of my profs studied at Harvard, others at Cambridge, etc. There is also the school of archeology which went on archeological digs in the Middle East. One professor from England, educated in English literature led Shakespeare tours to England every summer for years. They are a very scholarly lot. But, this may not be true for all institutions. We have a Schaeffer Institute which studies culture and Christianity, a theological think tank. They invited guests from many fields to come and lecture and believed that we must dialogue with culture not criticize it. Amidst all the academic noise, there is truth - it either happened or it didn't. There is also the belief that science is a unified discipline since it deals with objective truth which has touched on everything, including the Christian faith. Science, as a discipline, was born within the Christian belief system and no where else. Many early scientists were believers, the organized church was often wrong in its views. Isaac Newton wrote as much or more on theology as he did in his scientific endeavors. One of my daughters (adopted from Ukraine in 2003) is going through what you may have gone through. I watch her post videos repeating what her pastors and teachers teach from the bible, she also posts workout videos, lets be real. I understand that she is going through a process and I hope that she remains in her faith - even unbelievers have faith in something - it is erroneous to believe that academicians/scientists have all the answers and are unbiased. I know this to be true. My cousin, a surgeon, and I discussed his atheism at our last family reunion. He really does not have answers to the deep questions in life. You may want to look up Nancy Pearcey, an academician who has written many books on culture and philosophy of science, etc. Dr. Esther Meek, my philosopher prof, phd from Temple University, specializes in epistemology, or the question of knowledge and has written books such as , Contact with Reality, etc. I first read the Humanist Manifesto in the late 1970's while teaching in a private school. Have you read anything by C.S. Lewis, JRR Tolkein, both believers?

I never was a Chrisitan, but grew up in a small mountain surrounded by it. There's a few things that have always bothered me, that I found insulting from christians. One is saying who's a real christian or not. Not just the fight between christians, but when people say that, it's insulting to those who aren't or never was. I see some of these people being upset when a politician or celeb is identified as gay, Black, Atheist, etc. saying what does that have to do with their job. That's true, but I always hear one of the credentials is always mentioning they're a good christian. I know there are different levels of christians, and some more open minded, but I'm seeing that even the open minded ones aren't completely open minded, or accepting. I am on a site that is more political, I guess, supporting BLM,etc.. And someone quoted some stuff from the bible, talking about following jesus. Now they said it in a positive way and that jesus would support something like BLM. A few people got on there saying 'hey, this group isn't about proselytizing religions, some of us are Atheists, Humanists, etc. . Then it turned into a debate about that. Then one person said 'don't worry you don't have to be believers, because god watches over everyone even if they haven't found god'. That really triggered me and angered me. That they believe we're all children of god. We're not. It's a belief. And the thing is that was a pretty progressive person, but progressive and a christian, and didn't get that what she was saying was insulting. I also always have had a problem with missionaries. To me that's insulting. I lived 20 years in Asia, there's a mix of Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and non religious people. To proselytize and try to convert from their own beliefs I think is very insulting.

Concerning the Book of Revelation: it was most likely written between 95-100 AD. So the temple prophecy was easily smuggled in. And, it was not written by John the Apostle. It was a different “John”. It is written in Greek, rather crudely. John the Apostle spoke and wrote in Aramaic, same as Jesus. Revelation was not even added to scripture until 360 AD; before that-it was tossed around like a hot potato. Most early church leaders did not believe it to be true or inspired. Revelation was not even considered as text during the Nicean Counsel of 325 AD. It wasn’t until the Vulgate (Latin version) was written by ArchBishop Jerome in the latter part of the fourth century, that it became official text, thus compending the Coptic manuscripts.

Ehrman's best seller "Misquoting Jesus" is very informative and easy to read, however I think his book which had the most profound impact on me was "Forgery and Counterforgery".

There are Bible Colleges which in my view push the blind faith crap down the throats of their students, yes. But I went to seminary at Emory University and we had folks drop out after 2 weeks saying that they, “Didn’t come to seminary to have the Bible be questioned. Well that was too bad because that was a lot of what happened. You have your so called “Area 1 Classes” that talked about the books in the Bible, but even there we went over historical evidence that what was in the Bible etc. The first thing I remember be told was our studies would be based on 1. Anthropological 2. Historical and 3. Religious thought. Talk about a “Cage Match” . Folks would get to fussing and ready walk out, because we talked about what the Bible or other “Wisdom Books” said AND what could be proved. I loved watching the evangelist hair burst in to flames! While I do not agree with you (for the most part), I do find you interesting and well-spoken - and at least you aren't just reading a prepared script. The odd thing is: many of the particulars that you associate with Christianity, I've never believed or really encountered. I am familiar with the dating "problem", but in fact you are absolutely bound to accept certain dates for certain books. You have no choice - and I mean NO choice, and the self-described "scholars" have no choice either. For instance, you have no choice at all on, say, the book of Luke (which in turn means that you have no choice on Acts). You just accept certain dates because you have to, or because some "scholar" (who likewise had no choice) tells you to accept it. That amazed me! In fact, I didn't even realize it at one time. Anyway, enjoyed your presentation.

But I was heavily involved in Baptist Christian organizations in the south and studied apologetics with these groups in college and then would go on mission trips where I would put that knowledge to use. Many of my closest peers ended up going to and graduating from seminaries. So that's the level of Christian knowledge I surrounded myself with.

Read the sermon on the mount in its entirety; Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7. The people who live by these great words of wisdom and act like this, especially towards one another, is a true Christian. The word christian means the follower of Jesus Christ. The main teaching of Jesus is worshiping One God alone. There is no way in the bible when jesus himself said "i am god" or even as simple as "worship me". In fact, jesus said in the bible, to my God and your God. Jesus admits that he has a God. Only muslim who believes that Jesus has a God. So, in theory, muslims re the true follower of Jesus Christ. Also, Jesus himself didnt say, "i ll die on the cross". BUT, my sign/miracle is the sign of Jonah. Jonah was alive for 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of big fish. Again, only muslim believes that Jesus didnt die on the cross (it was someone else looked similar to Jesus on the cross). The Creator has saved him before got crucified. If you ve truly learned bible. You may confirm that. And you may visit answeringchristianity, i think. Its muslim answering christians questions (since, muslim also believes in Jesus). Well, its not like what you believe is the truth tho. Thats the definition of The Only One True Creator of universe The Ruler. What The Creator wants is the best for humanity. Since The Creator is the All-Knowing. Its not being intolerant :V But, the quran mentions that there is no force in religion by the way. I am studying many things. Your reply is just as expected. Your book is flawed and corrupted, and that is all you have to evince the world of your beliefs. In the real world, out here where we actually live, there is no indication Jesus is a god. Even in historical analysis we have no existing text from a secular author even mentioning Jesus' name! No non-religious person even noticed this man in all his excellence? Raising the dead, bringing angelic doves down from the heavens to bestow angelic gifts, causing natural disasters... etc. etc.... no secular author even took note in 100 years?

I'm guessing you don't know this but we have over 40 authors of the first century whose works survive. They wrote fiction, and text concerning science, medicine, and philosophy.
