🌍 How does recycling work where you live? Could there be a better system? 💡If you want to support this channel share this video on Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc. it helps a lot!
@The Compiler We have exactly this. I'd like to add that this kind of system recycles about 98% of our plastic bottles into new plastic bottles. My point is, it doesn't need to be glass for this to work, even though that's the focus of this video.
There are things you can do that matter. Go vegan, buy food in bulk with your own containers, drive electric if possible, ride bikes or electric personal vehicles, grow food, especially join a community garden or learn and incorporate permaculture techniques. There's a lot you can do. Nihilism is not an option.
I hope more people understand that recycling is NOT a perfect solution to solve the plastic problem. We need to tackle the problem at the root rather than trying to heal broken bones with a band aid.
Yeah I wish I did a better job driving that point home in this video. I did do a video on recycling a while back that dives into its many issues: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L6S63VXfqMw.html
Exactly! That's what I always tell my relatives and friends. Some of them always have the excuse: "Yeah, but it's recyclable". And then I have to tell them all over again about how recycling should be the last resort (apart from items sadly ending up in landfill obviously).
the root problem is that companies can use their capital to have politicians ignore their exploitative externalization of costs. linear economy is incentivized.
I have stopped drinking coke since a year ago because recently they had completely stopped the use of glass bottles and replaced them with small plastic bottle adding more plastic to already polluted country of nepal 🇳🇵.

I'm surprised you havent mentioned the cost of the plastic packaging as well. I remember reading about how much the actual water costs compared to the plastic bottle that's packed into. It was like way less then 1% of the total cost. These "beverage" companies are actually plastic bottle companies.
*Public service announcement* Here's a list of 20 popular beverage brands of the over 500 brands that are owned by The Coca-Cola Company: • Coca-Cola • Sprite • Fanta • Schweppes • Appletiser • Bonaqua/Aquabona • Römerquelle • Dasani • Smartwater • Powerade • Vitaminwater • Ciel • Minutemaid • Cappy • Capri Sun • Innocent • Costa coffee • Nestea • Fuze tea • Honest
I used to drink coke quite often, now, I'd drink a coke a glass of coke once every 3 to 4 months and have been doing so for around 8 years. When I switched to regular tap water I lost 22kg (around 48 pounds) and have managed to keep it off for all 8 years.
Rather than spending all that money on marketing and pr, Coke can actually use half of it to produce sustainably and we would not be having this problem in the first place.
As long as consumers keep buying their products, they wont. They prioritise any minor increase in profit over the environment. Consumers need to stop buying those products
I've never understood why anyone would drink nasty syrup in their water aside from carbonating it. Why not just grab a delicious glass of ice water and enjoy it without the sugar or sweetener?
It makes me cringe when I see people buying plastic bottles tbh, it's not a lack of understanding cos everyone knows the plastic problem... just selfishness 😔 consumers drive demand
This video needs to reach more people! I fear that this video is not getting enough exposure and that's a shame since it presents very well the impact that big enterprises have on the environment. More people should also know that most of the "green campaigns" that these enterprises put out are actually just marketing schemes and offsets that actually don't solve the problem, they just slightly patch the effects of their pollution while also continuing their day to day pollution as usual .
@Ooohbopbopboppadoohwah M.I.C. The elephant in the room indeed. Thanks for the link. This video should be widely broadcasted, shared, even though the carbon footprint of the military industrial complex is still largely underestimated...

I recently saw a video where they are adding plastic waste to asphalt paving of roads. The roads last longer and then are able to be recycled again. Seems like a good place for some of the plastic waste to go.
No definitely not. 1. Think about all the microplastics that that will create when the road wears. 2. It can only be down cycled in lower grade applications such as more asphalt.
@@neelisjansen The asphalt in roads is reused for new roads. They strip off the old, grind it up and reuse it. Not sure about the micro plastic issue but seem like plastic would be better on the roads than in the oceans. There needs to be some incentive / demand for the waste plastic in order for recycling to work. Best case would be not to use the stuff but it is too late for that.
@@KJSvitko I believe neelisjansen is saying how the inevitable erosion of roads via human (e.g. cars) or other causes (e.g. soil acidity, rain, etc.) would leech plastic into the surrounding environment. Eventually one might be able to argue that this plastic could be cycled naturally into the watershed or elsewhere.
On top of all the environmental damages, imagine what it does to your health. That's why I don't drink Coke..or Pepsi. If usually joke with my friends that if everybody did the way I did, they will go bankrupt tomorrow.:)
The thing is, Coca cola doesn't only own Coke, they own an enormous amount of other brands, some of them are local. We may not drink Coke, but we're probably consuming other Cocacola's brands without knowing that. Tbh they're too big to fail.
i dont even understand why do people drink this... it actually makes me feel physicly bad every time i try to drink it even thou i loved this as a kid. dont even get me started what it does to your teeth, my teeth feel so weird if i drink this
Isn't using local water supplies a good thing in theory? Like, better than shipping bottled water half across the world? There's still glass CocaCola bottles in Germany, with deposit according to the national bottle deposit system (which also exists for reusable and recyclable plastic bottles as well as drink cans). Coke still uses their iconic bottle shape, so those bottles will only ever be reused for that. But there's also standardised bottles that are used by a lot of brands, which presumably reduces transportation. You can also hand back bottles at every shop that sells them. So you generally don't have the issue of having to carry around an empty bottle.
If federal regulation is ever applied to companies such as Coca-Cola, there needs to be caps put on the amounts of money they put on their lobbying and PR efforts. Time and again companies like Coke have shown that they'd much rather look like they're doing something good instead of ACTUALLY doing good.
Things are far from good here in Germany, but it's baffling that a simple concept like Mehrwegpfand needs so much explanation for an international audience.
Is plastic in itself bad for the climate? If we are able to make an infrastructure toward recycling of plastic, wouldn't that solve the problem? Look at how Norway has solved the problem of over 90% recycling of plastic bottles.
Governments need to force drinks company like Coca-Cola to take part in bottle return schemes and mandate returnable bottles, it’s done in many countries now, and it has worked before. There’s no way these companies will fix this voluntarily
I spent some time in the Kingdom of Jordan, 20 years ago. They were still using glass bottles, there, for Coke. I wonder if that's still the case. Even then, the bus stations in Amman and Jaresh-everywhere, really-were loaded with garbage. You'd literally see short archways of Roman ruins atop which Jaresh's bus terminal was built filled with trash carelessly thrown there by any- and everyone. So, even if their materials were more sustainable, it's not like they were handling well their waste.
I hate our world. A terrible company like coke can get away with so many environmental damages and just put in their website false claims about their water impact and get away with it.
Here in South Africa Coke is cheaper to buy in glass than in plastic, so I will always buy glass over plastic, except if I am traveling long distances in the, because I feel like having a heavy glass bottle in the passenger compartment of the car in the event of an accident is extremely dangerous. I still feel like it should still be the responsibility of the consumer to dispose of empty bottles properly, not that I am saying it is not Coke's responsibility to take a stand and play a bigger role in cleaning up, but there is a much bigger picture here
20ml, maybe 30ml of Coca Cola is ok, just a little bit in a glass. but I really can't drink the whole can, It makes my mouth sticky, like after a run. I really feel the sugar brine! I don't buy Coca Cola because I waste it, at the same time, how can anybody drink the whole big bottle in day? or even in an hour?
Scientific answer: When you consume sugar, your tongue reacts to it and sends a signal to your brain, which then sends the signal back to your tongue that make sugar feel tasty - it is a natural reward system, because sugar is a main source of energy in a body. If people can't resist the urge to drink more, a 1 litre bottle in an hour is no big deal. Besides coke is just carbonated water mixed with syrup, so it gets digested pretty fast. Simple answer: Coke is sugar and sugar is tasty.
@@marks9127 I wonder if Coca Cola may lead to stronger sugary drinks ... like drinking maple syrup straight from the bottle :D Ok, I'm joking ... but, who knows ?
I always thought it was strange that water bottles were attacked but no one mentioned soda bottles. Not only plastic but the poisonous sugar that ruins health. Who is coke paying off to stay out of the conversation.
In Sweden we have a similar system as Coke had in the 50s where most plastic bottles have an extra charge added on when you buy them and if you return them after drinking everything you get that money back. Bottles can be returned at any grocery store too. The benefit for consumers is that they don't have to pay for the bottle as long as they return it
Okay, but how does that help the climate or solve anything? Basically the cost of the production is simply being put on consumers instead of the companies who produce (plastic) bottled sodas.
@@07Flash11MRC It motivates people to recycle. As long as you recycle, there is no extra cost because you get that money right back. This means that way more people recycle the bottles and is one of the many reasons that Sweden recycles 99% of all trash. Newsflash: Without this system the cost of production is also passed onto the consumers, they aren't just giving you the bottle. With this system you can get paid to give it back, so there's no downside for the consumer
do semiconductor industry next pls, i am pretty sure it does use tonnes of nasty chemicals and resources, we can make people more aware to be mindful before they buy their next computing device
Glass isn’t necessarily the better option since it takes a lot of energy (and CO2) to make them and to ship them since they are heavier than plastic. Aluminum can be a good option but I think it would be better if companies invested more into recycling facilities to ensure that our plastic, glass, and aluminum actually gets recycled and used.
@@antos.b glass deposit system is definitely the best option. even if it's harder to produce unlike plastic or aluminium it can be reused. over time it saves on production cost more than plastic or aluminium if local factories make the glass in the first place it wouldn't need to be shipped
Even if it's just a place bo effect, drink from a glass container taste much better. of course not drink at all should be the best choice, but no hard feeling for a soft drink here and there.
Glass bottles are not great either. They require much more energy to produce and need to be transported back and forth to be cleaned with chemicals. Aluminum cans are the most sutainable alternative as far as I know. But if you have clean tap water where you live you should just drink that.
Aluminum would need to be transported too. "you should drink just that", were human, noones gonna do the right thing 100% of the time and never have fun.
All plastic needs to be recycled. All NEW plastic products need to be made from 100% recycled materials. There should be no single use plastics produced. All plastic should be required to be reused by the manufacturer.
Loved the video, the editing is great, but I'd like to point out, that the brand Coca Cola is so much more than just the beverage Coca Cola, since the brand includes many other products like Dasani
Yes. All their machines require energy and materials (that need to be mined, refined, and shaped), most of their logistic system probably runs on fossil fuels, PET plastic production comes with CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, and so on and so on...
Answer to your problem. .. melt the bottles into liquid. Then pour into moulds. And make any think. .. plastic chairs. Tables. Traffic cones. Street road lamps. Possibly anything. You can think of. And you would be employing people. . Problem solved. ..

x1.25 speed AT LEAST. It's below 10 mins which probably fucks up the suggestion algorithm, but it's much easier to watch which probably favors the algorithm more than the duration.
I would change the title to: "Coke Consumer: The world´s worst plastic polluter?" (who can put that thing into his body? what a guts... I think it only works for low blood pressure and glucose peaks) WHO IS GOING TO OBLIGATE BY LAW THESE COMPANIES TO REMOVE THE THIN PLASTIC LABEL? it´s a nightmare. it decomposes at lightspeed then fragments into thousands of microplastics. If you pick trash know what I mean. If you do it, please handle them carefully. The botle (PET) lasts much longer, so labels are critical to be removed and collected to trash faster. (my recommendation on these cases where label is worn is to pick the bottle, put it into a plastic bag, then step it to compress volume, so label is fragmented in a controlled space which collects the microplastics. If you step it out microplastics will spread. Mircoplastics are further worse than the bottle. Think it this way: there are few animals able to eat a bottle. There are millions able to eat a microplastic, spreading it along the trophic net)
When I was a kid in the early 80’s we had coke delivered litre bottles on base at Camp Liberty (Ft. Bragg fmrly) it was awesome & I bet it would be popular w/Americans today & it just tastes better from gladd imo😉
growing up i always preferred the glass bottles for juices and soft drinks (i thought they made me look really cool lol, also thought the taste was better) but they've been slowly disappearing over time and i've always wanted to go back to the glass bottle system. taking things like climate change and pollution into account it really is a no-brainer. the added cost to sanitize the bottles is absolutely worth it. also, i genuinely think consumers should get used to LESS convenience. nothing bad is going to happen if you need to hold onto a glass bottle slightly longer.
I consider myself lucky, because my parents prohibited us from drinking ANYTHING with caffeine in it. In 5th grade I went on a field trip to the World of Coca-Cola in ’08, and my sister and I split the free bottle with each other. I haven’t had any Coca-Cola since. I know Coke sells a lot of different drinks like Vitamin Water or Dasani, but this video made me feel even better for not indulging in so much soda. More water for me, please
The movie "Idiocracy" presented a really scary future with bottled syrup taking the place of fresh drinking water. Resulting in destruction of Earth. Plastic production also causes cancer.
Is glass deposit a real solution? Because it has a much larger water and CO2 footprint compared with PET bottles... I do think that there is no perfect solution, but reducing PET, recycling it, and redesigning the industry standards will help!
There's a much, much better solution to this problem. Don't drink coke (or any of the literally tens of other beverages that they produce and distribute in plastic bottles). It's healthier, cheaper, and better for the environment. I haven't had a softdrink in 10 years, and I just don't understand why people still drink them?
To produce there are several actions industry must consider in relation to the earth, these are; Re-use Reduce Repair Redistribute (share) Recycle Reconsider..... all the steps above pertain to the three factors of production, subject of labor, the means of production and the labor itself. In short any labor-process humans engage between themselves. 1.9 billion Coca-Cola drinks a day are consumed by humans. That is quite a lot. The Coca-Cola Company must buy nearly all of the annual product of sugar plantations of the Caribbean given the quantity the world of consumers drink the drink. To meet that demand, Coca-Cola has no choice but to go outside of its home economy to buy sugar and inside its home economy to buy plastic bottles for its product so when the company re-enters the market, the drink makes it all worth the cost of production. The value retrieved from 1.9 billion units sold everyday has created an establishment with its own consumer base so big it will take the destruction of the planet and species to end it.
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle etc should be court ordered to fund plastic clean up and research into using recently evolved enzymes that can breakdown petrochemical polymers, and not allowed to create these greenwashing campaigns, but forced to meet standards set by third party oversight like the EPA or the UN. Just like Phillip Morris had to pay for health-related efforts to curb nicotine addiction.. These corporations are destroying our habitat and are arguably far worse than Phillip Morris, and it’s outrageous they aren’t being held responsible
Here, in the Philippines we use both glass and plastic bottles for soda (from Coca-cola, PepsiCo and etc.) It makes me wonder what countires are competely using plastic bottles or completely using glass ones.
Not only did they change the model for themselves. Where I live they cannibalized the market by actively getting and destroying the glass bottles of the local soda companies that were already stablished. They couldn't keep up with the costs of having to produce new expensive glass bottles so many of them went bankrupt, only the ones that adapted to Coca Cola's plastic model survived
Hate it!!!! I pick trash in My free time and i find so many Coca cola bottles! Here in Sweden tho they are all recyclable, thanks to THE Pant system, but it would be so much better IF they had not made THE switch to plastic!
you can still have regulation in a neoliberal society........ if anything its necessary......... but its not neolib thats done this its governments lack of action......
Plastic is problem but throwing habit of people is biggest problem. I written meaningful content and lyric in hindi, which will motivate people to stop throwing habit of plastic and garbage. I need good team to give finishing touch of my content and prepare video messages and sponsor to launch my campaign. I will launch songs, website, poster, slogan, video messages, music band, social media campaign. I also planned several new ideas which will address plastic and garbage problem.
In Sweden we have a deposit system for PET plastic bottles just like the one for glass bottles. Almost every single bottle is returned, recycled and reused for another bottle. And this is a lot less energy and resource consuming than making glass bottles. The solution is not to go back to glass. The solution is for the governments in the world to regulate and make sure that the plastic on the market is recycled and reused. The change in government start with you and your vote. The fact that Coca-Cola doesn't have a plastic problem in Sweden just goes to show that once again it is the unregulated capitalism of the US that is the biggest problem.
Going back to bottles would be such an easy start, in fact where I live we already buy glass bottles. But instead they just greenwash, so disappointing. To add more salt on the wound they had the audacity to put that responsibility on consumers to clean up for them. 🤡
