With every online interaction, we hand our right to privacy over a teaspoon at a time to any number of data collectors who have made it their mission and business to collate all our data and build a very reliable picture of who we are, what we like, where we go, and what we do. Renowned researcher, writer and speaker, Kirsten Martin explores the impacts of our digital lives and our often-conflicting native expectations and norms of privacy. Get ready to feel uncomfortable about your online habits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I realize companies and governments have information about us. However, they should respect our privacy.

I like how people expose themselves on social media without anyone asking them to, but still complain that someone knows something about them. Seriously?!

Wrong. Its being murdered by us, because we allow it. Not enough people care, or are willing to complain about it.

Why is no one complaining about cell phones? Your data is is being sent to your provider, Apple or Google, every app, your phone's manufacturer, and more. If you just read some of the terms of agreement of these, your mind would be blown. The worst part about it, is we agree to pay for an inverse formula of compensation! The more you use your phone, the more data you provide all of these data miners, and yet, we're charged MORE money in data usage. How does that make sense? That's really a bad deal. It should be reversed. The more free data we provide through usage, the LESS we should pay. The fair fix is flat rate all data plans with a single price regardless of usage. The 20th century model of the in store, e.g. the super market courtesy card, was fair. By using your courtesy card you agree to disclose your name, address, phone number, family size, income and possibly more, in exchange for discounts on your purchases. The more you buy using your card, the more data is sent out, and the more discounts you receive. If you want to opt out, simply don't use the card and pay cash. Simple and fair.

¤ FEAR of the Use Of Our Data Online, versus PEACE of a FREE, WELL ALIGNED MIND ¤ ~°~ As we see it, ~°~ We are NOT agree with the ASSUMPTION that our data are "USED AGAINST US". Our OBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE is that the ads we have always gotten since a while are Much More Accurate than before and personality we ARE VERY PLEASED of that fact and still even complain it is not Enough Appropriate some times! (not Easy Enough to manage, set in the ads options of my browser). What we do not want indeed is INAPPROPRIATE ADS. ~°~ For the use our my data "against us", up to now, we have NOT EVEN A SINGLE ONE REAL OBJECTIVE EXAMPLE of this SPECULATION. ~°~ Btw, THERE IS NO "MANIPULATION" POSSIBLE AGAINST ANYONE WITH A FREE MIND and NOTHING TO FEAR ON THE LONG RUN WHEN OUR HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE. ~°~ So the Main Problem, as we see it, is NOT the risk of Manipulation but THE RISK OF BEEN A WEAK MIND, NOT FREE FROM ANY RISK TO SUCCUMB TO ANY "MANIPULATION". ~°~ Regards, Didier

"Why companies should respect our privacy". What an extremely compelling title... I'm being sarcastic, because this is beyond obvious. I'm sad that we still need a talk in 2018 to make us understand this. Stop being sheep. Don't let the higher ups control your lives just because they "provide" services or some nonsense.
