Why Company Sponsored CDL Training is a Good Way to Get Your Truck Driver Training

One of the ways that is popular, for those wanting a truck driving career, is to enrol in a company sponsored CDL training program. These programs are commonly offered by most all of the mega carriers in the trucking industry.
The trucking companies offer potential drivers, paid truck driver training, usually at no or little upfront costs, in exchange for a commitment to the trucking company, to stay with them for a set period of time... ranging from 9 months to a one year term. If the trainee leaves the trucking company before meeting the terms of the agreement, there is often serious financial penalties or legal action taken against the driver, for not adhering to the commitment agreed upon in the written agreement.
These CDL training school programs by trucking companies have several advantages, of course along with some disadvantages.
The key is to choose the best one which meets your needs and to know going INTO THE AGREEMENT, what the expectations of the carrier agreement and fulfilling these expectations, so as not to get yourself into legal issues, should you leave the the company prematurely.
I am not a fan of the mega carriers. However, there are some distinct advantages to these driver training programs.
i )Usually no upfront costs
ii) Learn on the trucking company

DAY FIVE OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Things came to a head today. I had reached my limit. I didn't care anymore. I was going to speak up. While a third of us went for our first time driving on the road with an instructor, the rest of us were told to go out on the tarmac and practice our backing up (straight line, off-set, and parallel). We had been told yesterday that we would have our instructor there instructing and it would be better as there were fewer students then. But when we went back to our spot on the tarmac today, NO instructor was around. Ours didn't show at all except for one time when he drove BY on his scooter. After a while, we stopped waiting and tried to do it ourselves. But when I was trying to do the parallel, none of us could figure out what we were to do. I eventually got out of the truck and told my group that I was going to go to the office and at least get some print-offs that gave us instructions. When I got in there, I walked down to the first cubicle that didn't have a student interacting with it and asked for said print-offs. She told me to go find an instructor in the back. I went in the back and there was no one there. I came back, told her that, and she started calling around. Eventually she called someone and started talking to them and I started injecting. Yup, playing telephone on the telephone instead of just giving me the phone so I could talk directly to whoever she was talking to. Again, I said we had no instructor out there helping us, we were upset, and could we at least have print-offs giving us instructions on how to do the three types of parking. She then relayed that those instructions couldn't be printed off as they were power point presentations. I told her to tell whoever that, no, they can be printed off as all you have to do is put up the power point presentation on your computer screen and hit "Print Screen". That apparently stunned them. I then told them about our instructor going missing for the last four days and then I couldn't help myself and said out loud, "This school is a joke." and she relayed that. She then relayed back that TWO instructors will be out there helping my group shortly. I went back out to my group (which naturally was on the other side of the tarmac) and waited ... and waited ... and waited. Eventually an hour later, ONE instructor walked to us and said he was to come and talk to us. I then told him everything I have been telling here in the comments about the last four days. He apologized and said that was wrong. We were to get a full day with an instructor each of those days. The instructor wasn't just to signal us what to do but explain step-by-step what we were to do, why we were to do it, and how we were to do it properly. He then promised to stay after school either today or tomorrow and get us up to speed. I offered to pay him $100 if he would to hopefully ensure that he would but he declined it. He said during the rest of today he would help us as much as he could. He told us he was a new instructor and just been doing this for three weeks. However, it was time now for lunch and he'd help us afterwards. Just FYI, that means half of the day was already gone. After lunch, he was good to his word and started helping us. Then while he was helping the FIRST person in our group, another student from another group came over and was very upset. Our instructor was the ONLY instructor on the tarmac. Why did we get one and no other group? I told him that we didn't have an instructor all morning and for him to go complain to the office. I told him that's what I did and now we have an instructor. He wasn't angry with me but with the school. He said that and I said I knew that. Now when I went to the main building to use the bathroom (oh because they LOCKED up the one on the tarmac for some reason!) and came back out, I saw our instructor and I guess things got around. He acted as sheepish on his scooter. Gone were his normal cocky ways. I just wasn't in the mood and simply walked back to my group. Eventually I got my turn driving on real roads with an instructor and it went well. I drove with just one other student since we were the only ones left in our group not to do the road. Unlike the other student who was nervous and was heavy on the brakes and kept getting the buzzer sound for riding to far to the right, my time behind the wheel went great. I really enjoyed it. Not intimidated by it at all. Unlike the other student, not scared when other semis passed us. Even the instructor relaxed and just started talking about his life and only occasionally telling me when to take a turn. I got out of that semi just immensely happy. I had wondered if I could handle propelling such a big vehicle down busy streets and now I know I can. I really REALLY hope I can overcome how bad this trucker school is and get my CDL license. I think I'm going to enjoy being a trucker. :-) After I got back, I went back to my group. I didn't get a chance to get back into the cab. But did walk alongside the instructor and listened as he told the driving student what to do, why, and how. He was very open to questions. He would get all of us around and talk about certain points. MAN, do I wish we had had him for the last four days! Then the day was done. The two other students who I have been working with and I stayed since I had a vehicle and I started the outside pre-trip inspection. By the time I got halfway through, our instructor came back and said all the instructors were leaving and we'd have to go. Then unfortunately, he told us that apparently he couldn't stay late and give us additional instructions. Not today but maybe tomorrow. He apologized. He said we could visit him in his hotel room if we had any questions as he was staying in the roach motel himself until he got settled. He gave us his hotel number and told us that he loves being a teacher and wants us to succeed. We all shook his hand. If only the other instructors were like this. And speaking of the other instructors... When we walked off of the tarmac, we passed by a group of instructors and I watched them. Word had gotten around. We were not popular anymore. Some of them looked at us angrily. Others looked at us and when we made eye contact, they looked down at their feet in embarrassment. Oh well. If I can get my CDL, I will be gone from here in seven days. I don't need to be liked. I need to be instructed. All of us students need that! Tomorrow I wonder if there will be more fallout. If this place isn't a joke, the Head Instructor should meet with us and try to right the wrong. We'll see. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Time to hit the sack for another school day awaits tomorrow and through the weekend.

DAY TWENTY-FOUR OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Today was Test Day. Drove to the testing center ... even though you're not supposed to. I did because I didn't want to wait on a shuttle to take me back to school and if I passed, back to the hotel. Unfortunately, I was one of the last one to get one of the four clipboards to fill out the paperwork. Ugh! I was told by more than one trainer that you don't want to be one of the last ones tested as the evaluators are tired and even cranky by then. By the time I was called, I had been there five and a half hours. Pre-trip went fine. I got no points off. Nailed everything. But I should have as I was at the school TWICE as long as the school is supposed to last. I've been the "evaluator" for so many other students that it really didn't require much active thought. Honestly by the time I sat in the passenger seat to be the evaluator for their in-cab, I commonly started falling asleep because it was so repetitious. If anything, I went too fast. The real evaluator said I would win no bonus points for setting a new record for pre-trip. LOL Now the BIG question. Which side do I have to parallel park on. After the pre-trip, the evaluator had to go inside to get that coin flip decision. When he came back, he even joked, "Now for the big question of the day. Which side. Well, today is your lucky day. Passenger side." I was so relieved that I did all the backings without much thought. No pull-ups. Got out to look just once on the parallel. Evaluator came back into the cab smiling. "Great job. No points off. Let's go for a ride." After doing the first two turns "expertly", he said unless I hit a curb or Grandma, I've passed. I relaxed and just did the route. I know I didn't look 6 six times when crossing one railroad and I purposely ate a point to easily take "The Turn Of Death" as students call it. Jim, the road instructor, told me to do that. By this time, the evaluator was relaxed and we did small chat. He said that the instructors build them (evaluators) up as big bad guys and, he said, they're not. He then laughed and asked what nicknames did they have for the evaluators. I said I only knew of one. He asked what it was. I said "The Terminator". He asked which evaluator was "The Terminator" and I said the one named Steve. He then busted a gut and said he was Steve. I was shocked. He said he told me his name when he introduced himself to me. I apologized and said I was just too focused on passing. He laughed and said that was obvious from the moment he announced my name. He then gave me some advice about braking. No points off for what he was saying. He just wanted me to know how to properly brake in a tractor on the road. No stabbing at the brakes as you do in a car. Semis use air brakes and not hydraulics. Whereas hydraulics build up pressure from stabbing, air brakes lose pressure. And if you lose too much air pressure, the spring brakes will kick in and you'll be stuck at an intersection waiting for air pressure to build up. This was the first time anyone told that! So from two turns before getting on the highway to the end, he switched from being an evaluator to a trainer and taught me how to ease into and onto the service brake. By the time we got back to the testing center, he said I was getting the handle of it and I'd be a pro at it within just a few weeks on the road. If you haven't figured it out yet, I passed. :-) I then drove back to the school and started in on paperwork for new employees. Did what I could but I had missed the new employee orientation due to how late I tested so I'll have to come in tomorrow for it. I then went out onto the practice range and shook hands of and thanked the instructors that helped me the most: Jerry (who I've been referring in these journal entries as "the new instructor"), Greg, John, and Jim. In that order. Chatted with them each for a bit and then went to the next one. While this school is still a joke, none of those four instructors are. And that's the end of these journal entries. That was my experience at a trucker school. I hope these entries have at least given you a little insight into what it is like going to trucker school these days.

I went to C R England I hated it . I put up with it with 1 week and then paid them 5’500 out of my own pocket and went home and tried to find a owner operator to work for . I was out of work for 2 months but I saved up enough for at least 6 months. I eventually talk with a owner operator and they took a chance on me with high insurance and my one week of driving. I already knew how to drive a tractor trailer I’ve been with the same owner operator for the last 2 years I made 45 grand my first year and it just went up my second year. I’m very blessed for the opportunity and I love my boss for everything she has done for me

DAY TEN OF TRUCKER SCHOOL One of my worst days of my life. Went out for a pre-test drive with someone who should NEVER be allowed behind the wheel of a semi. Us two in the back quickly put on our seat belts and at times I braced for impact. She almost clipped another semi on the super-highway! Long before that, the tester (an instructor taking the role of examiner) had tossed his clip board onto the dash. I cannot possibly tell all the things she did wrong. I will just tell the worst. She merged onto a busy super-highway at TWENTY-FIVE miles per hour. No, I am not kidding. The instructor with nerves of solid steel stayed calm and tried to talk her into increasing speed. She did. To THIRTY-FIVE miles an hour! She then proceeded to almost clip a semi. Semis were blowing their horns at us. I was bracing for impact. You name it that you should do and she didn't do it. Checking intersections was done by her saying "Check" and not turning her head or even eyes. Not even "Check!". No, just a soft "Check." He told her she needed to check intersections six times (before right and left, crossing right and left, and behind right and left) and turning her head so the examiner can see she is doing so and NOT just saying "Check." Instead, she said, "Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. Check." and never turning her head once. I kid you not. It was insane. The two of us in back where muzzling ourselves from laughing out loud. From fearing for our lives to a comedy on wheels. Unbelievable! The instructor then took a good amount of time talking to her in the parking lot behind the DMV test track. It was like an adult talking to a child. A very beautiful cute young "adult" but still a child. She wasn't even phased when he told her that she had failed the test. Not a bit. You could have been talking to her about the roses that needed pruning in her garden for all appearances. That horror ride rattled me beyond belief. The next student who went somehow passed but I don't see how. I was told because he didn't clip any curb or run anyone over. But to say I was even CLOSE to the right frame of mind after that horror ride, would be a sad joke. I bet if an instructor had done the road test, I would have thought he would have failed too. My road test would then have to wait until after lunch. Those TWO road tests took two HOURS. I was rattled by it all. I went out to lunch with two friends at the school and TRIED to shake it off. I couldn't. My nerves were shot. I can usually hold my hands flat out and they will not shake at all. Solid and cold. They shook while I waited in line at McD. I tried talking it out with the two classmate friends. I tried eating it out. I tried being by myself and just trying to repeat the 3-Point Brake Check out loud over and over. The instructor came back late from lunch. Not complaining. He apologized. But I was HOPING he would so I could get my nerves back under control. Think of it as having just taken a wild roller coaster ride off the tracks and down the middle of a busy super-highway and then only given an hour to get yourself back under control and pass a test that required you to remain calm, relaxed, and yet firmly in control. But, first and surprising me totally, the gal came back and wanted to ride along when I did mine. The instructor got her out of the cab and shut the door. Over his lunch (which I'm sure wasn't much), it was apparently decided she had to go. She was kicked out. You just knew it was going to happen. I watched in the passenger mirror. Nothing. No tears. No fists. No yelling. I don't know if she really understood what just happened. She then walked over to a man who was old enough to be her father (he wasn't ... completely different races), smiled, hugged him, and walked off with him. I guess to go shopping for more roses. Now my road test was to start. Horror ride, student booted, and now me. As the instructor asked me not to tell anyone about my first road test, I won't here. But it wasn't good. We then parked in that same back parking lot and I just let it ALL out. I'm a vet and he's a vet. If you're not a vet, you might not understand. I felt I could unload. He said it wouldn't go further. Just him and I. I told everything that I've put into these comments and then tossed in a very little of what my time in the military was like. I was stressed out and just didn't care anymore. I told all. I asked if that the fallout were to take out someone, I wanted it to be me and not these young kids. They had a life before them and I was in better financial shape than any of them ... and that's not saying much. Trust me. Not much at all but still better than them. After that, I calmed down. Dried myself up. And then I was relaxed. All the weight was gone. I had unloaded. We then did the test again. I passed at 95%. Then he asked me to speak to the Head Instructor. I didn't want to. He said I could trust him. I asked if he was a vet. He wasn't but the instructor swore I could trust him. It didn't go well. I told only a fraction of what had gone wrong and clammed up when his body language showed increasing resistance and even hostility. Or that's how I read it. I probably wasn't in the best frame of mind. I just didn't want to be there. I had said my piece to the instructor and HATED having to say it all over again and go through that roller coast again. It was torturous the first time. A second time wouldn't be any better. But......... Tomorrow others from my group will be going into complain. Not all. Some are still afraid of losing their possible jobs. Some are not confrontational. Just the opposite. The younger they are, the more they do NOT make waves OR want us older students to MAKE waves. But this is just a joke at this stage. If we don't speak up, we're royally sc**wed. Yesterday, 5 out of 15 didn't pass. Today, only FOUR passed of out something like twenty or more. NOT failed but PASSED! The first of my group is about to test tomorrow morning. Fortunately, if anyone of us can pass, he will. If he doesn't, we are ROYALLY SC**WED! LOL Right now, I wouldn't place money on me. I sure wish there were truckers who didn't hate us student truckers and would ... I don't know ... probably nothing they can do. Did I forget to mention we're royally sc**wed? LOL! Maybe even ... yes, I am totally delusional now ... the DMV coming to our rescue! Sloths of the world U...N...I...T...E and F...I...G...H...T! LMAO!!!

I went through 8 weeks of training and I've been out on my own for 6 weeks now. Everything has went great, I'm really happy with my decision! Just take your time and don't jump at the first offer that comes to you.

Thanks for the info and the channel. Just 2 months into Englands program. You're right with the big carrier it's a lot to take in and it was difficult at time being alway from home and family at first. It's way worth it because driving a truck is only getting better now and the pay will be better as well. They have a 9month contract and after that that's when the freedom and good pay start to kick in. Sticking with really is the best thing to do if this is what you want to do with your life. Home time will fall into place with no problem. Just push through those first 3-4 months!! Thanks again!

I think that when deciding you want to drive a truck - consider if you actually is suited to do that as a person. If you have a short temper and is easily stressed it can just end in trouble. You can screw up in a car and get away with it, but a truck is magnitudes worse. But it doesn't harm you to have a CDL in the long run, even if you eventually end up in another job. So if you are fresh out of school with little obligations and few bills it's not a complete waste. I work with development of trucks (major international brand) and am often baffled by how few people that are developing the vehicles that actually know how they are used and what the driver needs. I have had a lot of advantages having grown up on a farm so I know what people are talking about when it comes to the heavy stuff. And future trucks will in a close future only have automatic gearboxes. Of course there will be variations on the actual mechanics - ranging from the classic type with torque converters to dual clutch robotized mechanical gearboxes. But the classic stick will most likely be history in a few years except in special applications.

I found getting my cdl was simple...had a class C which is a class B nowadays....drove an F700 4spd....got into a tandem axle IH with a 13spd....knew nothing about shifting this....wasn't taken for test drive...was told " if you can't drive this you'll be the one dying in it " ...learned to shift it after asking someone....a year later went and took the general knowledge...air brakes and combination vehicle tests and passed....had a permet....backed my 66 Chevelle with a stone shovel sticking out trunk with a 28ft long ladder attached to it as a fifth wheel and shopping cart wheels on other end....had a "truck" with a 28ft long trailer...backed in my Grandmas driveway a few times to get used to backing a trailer and got hired at a flatbed steel company....said I was driving a year but they wouldn't get my license...drove a day with guy....next day I drove and backed into some docks and the 3rd day took driving test....was ALL EASY....30 yrs. later it STILL IS....and it's CRAZY....I back up on the blind side more comfortable than drivers side....the driver side feels awkward because I've always made an effort to not be AFRAID of backing....no WRECKS or TICKETS ever....

DAY TWO OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Oh my goodness, we got more instructors! Twice as many. If you read my comment about Day One, you'd know I'm being sarcastic. That meant four instructors for 40 students today. They couldn't even fit us all into "Classroom 2". Not enough chairs. Many standing. The power point presentation was a joke. But at least we didn't spend all day in there. The class was divided up into four groups. Ten in each. Today we were to just practice straight-back backing. That's it. And when we weren't doing that, we were to HELP EACH OTHER learn our pre-trip inspection. You know that thing we only got fifteen MINUTES instruction on the day before. That being one machine-gun-fast walk-through. Now if you read my previous Day One comment here, you might recall those of us who didn't get in-cab instruction on the Three-Point brake system were to DEFINITELY get it today. They promised. They assured us. No question. No doubt. Andddddd NOPE! Not at all. Buttttttttttt we were assured we will get it tomorrow. No question. No doubt. Excuse me while I barf into this trash can. Back to the straight-back backing. We were out in the parking lot for nine hours in blazing hot sun. In my group, I went first. Guess. Seriously guess how many times I got to back up the tractor and trailer in nine HOURS outside. If you guessed three, give yourself a lollypop. Oh, and I was the only one in my group who got to do it three times. All the other nine only got to do it twice. Though I don't know if I should count my third time. You see the instructor was gone for over two hours, came towards us, and waved from that distance that I was to do my third time. I climbed in the cab, moved the trucker forward, and then the instructor disappeared. He just vanished. I sat in the cab waiting for the go-ahead but it never came. I sat in it for a half hour. We then see him putting cones down on a far part of the parking lot that is getting new lines painted on it. I watched him for a long time in my rear view mirrors. He just seems to have forgotten us and even me sitting in the idling cab waiting for the go-ahead. The rest of my group just stood there not knowing what to do. Finally, one student who I got along with came up and just told me to do it. Why not? No one was around. We might get to at least practice it ourselves as we were doing with our pre-trip inspections. So I did. Helped a bit by my fellow students. But I got it done. I then pulled up and got out of the cab. Still no instructor. Another student got in but he was a really bad student. He nearly jack-knifed the trailer in his last attempt. Fortunately, he couldn't figure out how to get the tractor into gear and moving. We all didn't help him since we were already scolded for helping others and this student was ... well, did I mentioned he nearly jack-knifed the trailer on his second attempt? LOL! Eventually, half of my group just walked off. Me and four others stayed with an idling truck and wondering what we were to do. We just didn't think we should just walk away. Eventually, one of us went to another group and asked its instructor what we should do. He told us to shut off the truck and we did. We then just stood around waiting for the return of our instructor. Eventually, he turned to us ... not REturned but only turned to us ... and from half the parking lot away (this being a MASSIVE parking lot) signaled that we were to uncouple the trailer and shut it down. WHAT? We hadn't been taught how to do that yet. Fortunately, one of the students who had walked off came back at that moment and he had already been to another trucker school. He told us what to do as he did part of it. We then stood around. When it came to 4:30, the instructor finally came back, high-fived all of us, and dismissed us for the day. Did I mention in my last comment that for 12 days of this school, we signed a contract that will require us to pay the school nearly $6,000 ($9,000 with interest if we pay it back in installments)? That means we are supposedly getting $750 worth of instruction each day. Yeah right! 15 minutes of instruction on Day One and three times straight-back backing up a trailer today. And I was the lucky one! The rest of our group only got to do it twice. But tomorrow is another day and I need to hit the sack to get some sleep for it. I'll report in tomorrow. :-)

I got lucky. I was going to go with a mega carrier, but, an insurance check came in from a loved one left me when they died and went to an in-state PTDI certified school. A year later I'm going to a smaller company that pays better and dispatch that pretty much leaves you alone if you show you know wtf you're doing. The biggest thing I would add is to be patient when starting out

I’m blessed, fortunate and grateful to have worked for UPS for several years and just started driving truck for them. They train you, pay for your CDL and I’ve heard that it’s one of the best truck driving jobs out there. You gotta pay your dues to get that’s job though.

Going through a mega carrier is good to help you get your cdl plus getting in 1-2 years experience needed to be able to get a job with someone else bc most companies that are worth working for require at least 1 year experience but most mega carriers have now went to automatic transmission and now a lot of states will put a restriction on your license if you take your test in an auto so you will have to take another road test later if you ever want to drive a truck with a manual trans

Save your money and pay for Training yourself. Talk to people who took company paid training. Listen to the many stories. When a company pays for schooling, you get paid 25 cents a mile or less. Your kept OUT on the road for 4 or 5 weeks of training or more. You'll get 4 or 5 days home then back out for another month or more. They make sure you don't get near your house to keep you out. Its expensive to live on the road. A shower at a truck stop costs $10.00 unless you fuel. When you get a paycheck you first pay back any money you were comped. (Borrowed from the company) pay is low, a month on the road IS GOOD experience but you can't pay any Bill's at home ! BEWARE ! Talk to others. IF YOU'RE married you won't be for long.if you have little KIDS, hug them and say goodbye. See you at Graduation. Stay safe out there ! Best of Luck !

Its not a good idea to get trained at mega carrier. Driver is overpaying for training, and then is getting shafted by low wages for a year. If a beginner driver doesn't have money to pay for training, the chances are he/she will qualify for free training paid for by government. If you don't like government, then just borrow money, but don't go to ripoff private trucking schools that charge you $6,000+ to get trained. Find schools that will teach you for around $2,000.

DAY TWENTY-THREE OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Just practicing driver side parallel. No one had a clue who was NOT "cheating". Apparently, the easiest way to do the driver side parallel is to simply look out the driver's window. Those who swear by this technique say you can see all you need to see by just doing that. One of the instructors (the new one previously mentioned in earlier journal posts) said he tried it and it worked like a charm for him. As for the practice range, it was hot as blazes. Last time in the saddle, my mind felt literally fried. I couldn't think straight. Brain shifted into neutral. I eventually just got out and gave up my turn. Went out with another instructor who is going to be an evaluator over at the testing center and leaves the school in a week. Told him about the "cheat" and he said they're not to do that. I asked why and he said it just went against the rules of the school.

I have never worked for a mega carrier. But in my research Swift and USXpress have good training programs. Swift not the best cpm but last guy I spoke with was at .37 CPM at 6 months so not to bad for first year. If you think about doing OTR 1 year will go very quick. If you are single then you take you time off wherever you want. Way back in 1994 was my first year OTR and when I was comfortable with the truck I used to drive 4-6 weeks then take almost a week off. Kind of like banking your off time. My lady at the time I would just put her on a plane to meet me. So was able to see a lot of the country that way also.

DAY TWENTY-ONE OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Just trying to figure out how to do the WILL-NEVER-USE driver side parallel park. And that includes the instructors. No one ... NO ONE has a handle on it yet BUT that doesn't mean us students won't be tested on it by the DMV. Coin flip. That's what the DMV test will be. A coin flip. The computer says you have to do the passenger side off-set and parallel and you'll likely pass. It says you'll have to do the driver side off-set and parallel and you'll likely fail. Not 100% guaranteed failure but I'd bet against ya. But I did get in one driver side parallel today and then one of the road instructors came over to compare a fuse he had with one that was in our pre-trip truck to go fix a tractor-trailer that broke down at a truck stop after refueling. I was in that truck at the time. It was low on coolant, red stop sign icon turned on the dash, and the truck would only let you drive in creep mode (5 mph). The instructor turned it around and we waited for another of the school tractor-trailer to come refuel to get coolant from them. Our rig didn't have any. But that didn't help so he parked it and the school sent out a shuttle to pick us up. I then later rode back with the road instructor and two students. Turns out it just needed to cool down. Fired right up. He drove it around the truck stop parking lot and everything seemed fine. I then rode in his truck while he did a road evaluation of the two students. I thought it would be a good idea to run the road segment of the DMV test again.

DAY SEVEN OF TRUCKER SCHOOL I thought this was the halfway point but it isn't. We will supposedly be able to test with DMV this coming Wednesday. Today we had a few instructors for us Day Seveners but not enough. Tomorrow we have been told we're on our own. A new class comes in and my "class" is to teach each other. Essentially, the "schooling" from here forward is the school letting us use their trucks while we practice our backings (straight-line, off-set, and parallel). Tomorrow we also do the road test with another instructor who will grade us. I assume that critique will then be used to help us work on where we're weak. As for myself, my road segment today went well. Instructor said I'd pass. Unfortunately, I ate at Burger King for lunch and they didn't do as I asked and I ate something I wasn't supposed to. That got me sick and so I felt horrible for the rest of day. Due to having too few trucks for too many students, I didn't get a chance to practice my backing even once today. But as I was feeling sick, maybe it wouldn't have mattered anyway. To say we will have gotten $9,000 worth of education is simply preposterous. Honestly, I don't think I got more than $200 AND most of that was the new instructor staying late yesterday to help us with reference points on backing. Oh, and the backing is simply a joke. We're using reference points that will ONLY exist on the CDL test course and NOWHERE else. Not only that but the state we're in, their DMV has us do parallel parking that numerous truckers say they either have done once or never in their entire careers. But, yes, I know. Never underestimate governmental stupidity. So the next three days will be pretty much like today. I'm not sure if I will post another daily comment but will if something noteworthy happens. If so, I will post one at the end when I will HOPEFULLY get my CDL license.

I've heard of companies paying to get you there, plus hotel and meals, plus training pay. Why would they have to go across several states to get enough people to fill up a class when there are tons of people in every state looking for work? As for a 'guaranteed job,' couldn't they terminate you at any time, either during or after training, but before you 1 or 2 years is up, even for no good reason? Do they even pro-rate the loan payback that I'm sure they make you sign upfront? A guy who quits after 11 months shouldn't pay the same as the guy who quits after 2 months. Are pay rates negotiable? Could two guys sitting in the same training class be making different money just cause one asked for it but not the other? Seems to me the company would risk the two getting together and comparing notes on pay and someone getting pissed over getting paid less. But that could happen even with experienced drivers. Which companies do you recommend for training? I'm finding very few who even offer it, when there's supposedly a 'driver shortage.' (which I think is a hoax to get more people applying, which keeps their labor costs down cause supply stays closer to demand.). Schneider and JB Hunt and many others aren't training. They want you to go to a training school but I won't do it. I've already paid off two students loans. No more.

DAY TWENTY OF TRUCKER SCHOOL There will be no practice on the driving range on Labor Day, which is tomorrow. The instructor who said he'd try to make it happen said that because the shuttle won't run on that day and to be fair to those without their own cars, it cannot be done. Those testing the next day were not happy. Fortunately for me, I retest the next day. Instructors are still trying to figure out how to do the driver side parallel park. A crucial reference mark isn't working out. One of the senior instructors took over a tractor-trailer and pretty much took all day trying to figure out a better solution. In my opinion, he didn't come up with a good substitute. Back to looking for a needle in a haystack. Needless to say, us students who will be testing and retesting soon weren't all that happy that even the instructors cannot figure out how to do the driver side parallel. Those of us re/testing on Tuesday and Wednesday now think our fate will be decided by a coin toss. If the DMV computer picks that we're to do the passenger side off-set and parallel, we will pass. If it picks the other side, we will likely lose. NEVER volunteer to be either a time keeper or spotter for an instructor. Some students just cannot accept that they have to listen to another student. Because the instructor knew another student and I knew all the reference marks for the driver side parallel park and knew we had successfully done it twice the day before, the instructor made us two spotters for two ranges. He did this because he was SWAMPED with 43 students. BUT, of course, a student got really upset that I was made a spotter. First, I yelled at him to release his trailer parking brakes. I yelled so he could hear me as he was dragging his trailer. He yelled back that he did release his trailer brakes. A second later, everyone heard the brake being released. Second, I told him to turn a certain way at a certain point and he yelled back to keep my mouth shut. I then did just that and he screwed it all up. After giving up and reseting the truck back to the starting lane, he got out of the truck and started to try to dress me down. Fortunately for me, the instructor was there at that moment and stepped between him and me and dressed him down. Then for the rest of that afternoon, his little clique huddled all together to grumble among themselves while giving me mean looks. Whatever. All students have to be at least 21 years of age to be here but so many act like stupid teenagers. Interestingly and kind of humorously, when one member of his little gang got into the truck and was passing me on the range (I standing next to the lead cone of the parallel box), he said he has no beef with me, he wants to learn, and asked if I could help him. I did. But after the next one gave me attitude, I swapped ranges with the other student who was a spotter. But by this time, I was sick of being a spotter so if the student didn't ask for help, I didn't give it. Eventually, the Head Instructor showed up (it was supposed to be his day off) and he took over my range. I then went over to the previously-mentioned senior instructor who was trying to figure it out and just watched him try to do so. I figured I might learn something. No other student hanged out there because they probably thought they wouldn't get behind the wheel. I figured the opposite as I figured he would want a student to be a guinea pig. I was right. I ended up getting in the tractor a number of times. Oddly, though we were right in the center of the driving range and anyone watching us could see me repeatedly get into the truck to drive, no other student joined us so I just kept getting saddle time over and over again.

DAY ELEVEN OF TRUCKER SCHOOL All from our group who tested today passed. All came back and talked to the rest of us. We'll likely all pass. I won't be able to test out until Monday because you need to have your learning permit for 14 days before you can test out with the DMV. There's a tip for you wannabe truckers! Pass your last written DMV test (pick the easiest one [e.g., combination]) for CDL learning permit on the Saturday before the Sunday you drive off to trucker school. That way the school cannot force you to test until 15 days (DMV is closed on Sunday) and thus get more time in the saddle. Come tomorrow, there might be as few as just three of us left to test out who didn't fail. We will then have a truck all to ourselves for the weekend. Talk about getting time in the saddle! Those who fail go to the back corner for one-on-one time with instructors to help you pass. It isn't the corner of shame ... except for the instructors who failed those students. As for the fallout from what happened yesterday and what our group did today, there wasn't any of either. Big ado about nothing ... apparently. Head Instructor hasn't yet talked to me again. Some but not all of us are leaving harsh comments about what happened to us ... BUT it is likely nothing will be done about it if we all pass. Oh well. The other older student passed today and then took us on the road trip part of the test. We did it twice. Once with him in the front seat and a second time with him in the backseat watching us as we pretended to drive it as we would with a tracker-trailer. I will drive that route several times over the weekend to learn it as well as I can. Now I am very tired and want to hit the sack. Study hall tomorrow.

This seems to be all geared to us drivers. I'm pretty sure here in Canada there are no companies that pay for your training. They will train you here in Canada at rates below minimum wage ONCE you obtain your licence first and make you sign a 2year contract and if you quit before the 2 years is up you pay it back. Best advice is pay your own way and don't let the companies have any control over you.

This video is old, but I figured it still had good stuff. The comments were interesting and informative. I’m headed for a Community College that offers the CDL. Monday morning I’ll be starting. I took the “A” tests for my CLP a couple of weeks ago. I’m 55 years old, with some college. They weren’t easy per se, but with some studying, passing isn’t a problem. I passed my tanker endorsement also. I had to get a drug test as well as a DOT physical. Those were not a problem either. I come with some background in trucks. So I’m not as concerned with the pre-trip as I am the actual driving. I know the components and what they do. In my opinion if you’re going in not imagining you want to be a professional driver, look at another career. The industry doesn’t need folks just looking for a paycheck. If you can’t put your mind into passing everything and being the best driver you can be, you shouldn’t be there, and probably won’t do well. I’ve taken everything seriously, and studied. I’ll be doing the same for the rest of this process and by Thanksgiving will hopefully be working for someone who takes the industry as seriously as I do.

DAY SIX OF TRUCKER SCHOOL My group was divided into three so a third at a time went out for driving on the roads while the rest practiced their backing. On the road, today, we focused mainly on right hand turns. While driving around, we found out that the trucking company was telling the instructors to lie to us about pay. The lie was that us students were being paid $45 a day while at the school. The instructor would have none of that and told us we weren't being paid anything. And I wonder why the trucking company thought we wouldn't be able to figure that out ourselves when we looked at our paychecks. Maybe they thought the majority of us wouldn't. Lovely. Just lovely. Did I mention we were told this was a "family" business and how we were "part" of that family? LOL! On the bright side, the new instructor who said he would stay after school yesterday or today, wasn't able to yesterday but did today. It was really nice having an instructor with just two other students. No crowding. No one yapping in the background. No one in the back looking at their smartphone and then asking questions that if they had been paying attention, they would have known the answer. Two of us were able to do all three parkings (straight line, off-set, and parallel) after the instructor just walked ... literally walking the tarmac without the truck ... through all three, all the steps each required, and what reference points we were to use. Unfortunately, another student found out that an instructor was going to stay late and sort of horned into what we had arranged for ourselves. The one of us three who didn't get to do all parking though was already good at it so he just let that student take over the instructor and we left. Oh well. As this instructor was nice enough to stay late, I ordered an extra-large pizza and cinnamon sticks plus pop for all of us. It was my way of saying thanks. It was appreciated. Now tomorrow, our plan is for the three of us to take one of the trucks meant for those who think they know what they're doing and see if we can do it all by ourselves. If we can, that's what we're going to do from here forward ... except, of course, when we're out on the road with an instructor.

DAY EIGHT OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Two to three days until being tested by DMV. I have been in the saddle during school hours a total of ten ... TEN times. Too many students and too few instructors and, today, now too few trucks and trailers, as apparently the DMV needed to borrow some from the school for their testing grounds. SURE, why not! It isn't as if us students might need them. Nah, we'll just practice our pre-trip inspections in our minds. Oh and the trucks are failing. We saw another one towed away today. The trailers are old. Some don't even have the ABS light on the trailer's side ... so we have to pretend to inspect something that isn't there and commonly forget doing that. Of my group of ten, two are good at the backings (straight-line, off-set, and parallel) but not perfect. The rest of us are a mixed bag. FORTUNATELY today for the first time, they had an instructor just for those students who just don't get any of it. Those students eat up the most time as they can take up to an hour or more to do the three parkings. Not that all the students who don't know anything went to that line. Each group had at least one who was totally clueless BUT thought he knew it OR, more likely, was embarrassed to go to the clueless line. Like WE didn't notice they're clueless when they drove. One did seven pull-ups on just the off-set parking WITH an instructor helping him. One instructor for all of us who think we know what we're kind of doing. And that instructor said we really shouldn't have even him and wouldn't normally. But if you are LUCKY to get ONE time in the saddle in a DAY, yeah, we're going to suck. Something he admitted when he said we just need more time in the saddle. I agreed and then told him that in the first three days, my group had an instructor for maybe HALF a day. That silenced him. And he was and is a really nice guy and someone who my group WISHED we had during our first three days on the tarmac. He actually INSTRUCTED us and just didn't just tell us to turn this way and that and THINK they're actually teaching us anything. A dog will follow directions but that doesn't mean he understands what he is doing or why. Humans don't either if we're never told. Well, I was sick of guessing what we're to do in the off-set and parallel parking so I sat down and wrote out what I thought the step-by-step instructions should be for both. This because we never got such a hand-out for them. Honestly, that's Teaching 101! I then showed the two lists to two of the best students and they added a couple corrections. I then showed it to the instructor and he corrected it in several places. Think about that! Myself and two of the best students got it WRONG! This is Day EIGHT and we've been wrong all this time! I then re-wrote it all in better penmanship, showed it to the instructor again, and he approved it and then later added to it. When I got back to the hotel, I re-did the entire two lists over again and went to the school's roach motel to show it to the new instructor who is there while he finds an apartment for his family to come and join him. He had previously told us to stop by his hotel room if we had any questions. He liked it. He was impressed. He said this is what they, the instructors and school, needed. He told me that tomorrow I should show this to the Head Instructor and he'll probably want to make copies of it for the other students. I could say more but it would give away which school I'm at and since I want to HOPEFULLY pass the DMV CDL test and work for them, giving enough clues probably wouldn't be in the best interests of my future employment with them. Oh, and today I totally sucked. Tried to do off-set and just bombed. When it was my turn again, I had the instructor come over and help me. He was mainly helping the group next to us and very little our group so I didn't feel totally bad asking him to help me on my second attempt at off-set. Well, it went bad like last time. The instructor stopped me before I could get the tandems to the edge of the driver's side convex mirror. He asked why I was going further. I told him. He questioned me and thought I was trying to make the tandems disappear in my driver's convex mirror. When I told him they were still an inch from the edge of my mirror, he got upon the riding board, looked into them, sighed, closed his eyes, knelt his head, and then proceeded to pound on the convex mirror until it was in its proper place. After that, he went to the other side and did the same to its convex mirror. When my group found out that, I cannot tell you how upset they were. All of us were not hitting our marks and going too far and THIS was why. UGH!!! Another thing. I watched that instructor try to do an off-set for that other group. Note the word "try" in that sentence. It looked like a student wanted to burn his turn to be able to just watch the instructor do it. The instructor COULDN'T. Not easily. He had to make a couple pull-us before he could. He later told me that because of how the lines were repainted, the normal reference marks were off. Great. Just great. Can you imagine how I felt after watching and hearing that? Oh, and the old instructor who did the first presentation on Day ONE told us that if we didn't pass the DMV test we would be put into "the corner of shame" for all to see while we received one-on-one instructions from instructors. If that happens to me, I am going to be so ticked off that I might just demand all the instructors join me there. Apparently they ALL knew my group was being short-changed the first three days and did NOTHING to help us. NOTHING. This I found out from one of the instructors. Not that the rest of the groups got fantastic help with so many students per instructor. Though one student said it wasn't as bad as it was in another of this trucking company's schools. The one she just came from. At that school, it was 23 students per instructor! On the bright side, I've made some nice new friends. I don't have any real complaints about the instructors ... but one. The majority of the instructors actually appear to want to try to help us. They're just swamped with students. As for myself, I think I will hold off doing the DMV until Thursday to give me another day practicing my parking. Oh and tomorrow I take the school's road test. If I fail it, I will be put back a week. Fortunately, the road segment is the one thing I know I will nail. Now off to sleep. School tomorrow.

In PA (the US), they won't hire you UNTIL you have 2 years over the road. This is because the INSURANCE COMPANIES jack up the rate if a company has inexperienced drivers.

CR England has automatic transmissions now, and that puts a manual transmission restrictions on your CDL. So you have to spend more money on training for the restriction to be lifted. Most good paying jobs is for big oil. Most rigs are 18 speed transmission and wont hire you if you only have 13 speed transmission experience. Some schools have a verity of transmissions, trials, simulators and a list of Companies that will haire straight out of schools that pays more. Those big Companies will haire you to. If you go to paid training Companies, you will sign a 1yr contract to pay for their training back and more. They will keep you on the run with no home time, 6 months is the norm and a week off.

DAY SIXTEEN OF TRUCKER SCHOOL Five ... FIVE instructors didn't show up this morning! This crippled the school. The Head Instructor was furious and, at roll call, said he was going to fire most or all of them. What? How can you fire people who have already quit? The instructors who did show were swamped with students. Road evaluations were suspended. It was a mess. Why did it all happen? The night before I talked to one of the five who didn't show up. At the time, he gave no hint he wasn't going to show up the next day. I've been referring to him as the new instructor in these journal entries. Apparently there's been a lot of heated arguments among the instructors. The good instructors complain about the bad ones. The bad ones claim the race card. The Head Instructor takes a hard line and says he's open to ideas and complaints but quickly becomes all defensive when any are lodged. An assistant to the Head being so far up his behind she can brush his teeth from the inside. There being NO consistency in instruction or discipline. I can personally testify to the former. Every instructor doesn't just seem to contradict each other but explicitly contradicts each other. "Forget what he said. Do it my way." Rumor has it that more instructors might not show up tomorrow. Who knows. As for myself, I just went back to getting only one time in the saddle today. Oh, and us students are researching other trucking companies and the grapevine is educating us about what's out there. Some trucking companies with training schools are offering better deals, especially for veterans. One has a longer school, pays their student $500 a week during it, gives three meals a day, you get your own hotel room, and you start at a higher rate per mile. And it gets even better if you're a vet. [Why am I here? LOL!] Other trucking companies are offering to pay off your tuition if you're willing to work for them and break your contract with the trucking company that this school is a feeder farm for. Tomorrow's another day. Time to get some sleep for "school" then.

Why would a person go to a private school for truck driving? You still need experience, and why not have the experience on top of it.

I was given a CDL Manual, hopped in a 275 inch wheelbase truck with a 45ft trailer, drove it twice, was told to schedule the test, passed it, and Shazam I had my class A license. Not to brag or nothin'. Cost me 27 dollars for license registration while being paid for the times I drove it. Hard to beat how lucky I was.

Hi there, I'm European guy but I'm greatly interested in the industry worldwide and watching your videos on regular basis. Here in Europe, cost of driving license for big truck varies from country to country and there are also special courses you need to have along your basic license when you want to drive for example dangerous good or operate big crane on the truck. Anyway, you did say that financing the license on your own can be a great deal and can potentially lead to huge debts. Therefore I would like to ask just for curiosity what approximately can be the price of this in US/Canada??? Just for comparison in case somebody's interrested... in poorer EU countries it cost about 2 times your future salary, now I live in Denmark and here it's funded by government so you can get it free when you are unemployed or otherwise you pay just very symbolical cost (I think about 700USD) + some fees for issuing the license and doctor examination (not more than 200USD in total)

USA schools that train you to get a Commercial Truck Driver License in the USA can cost from $2,000 to $8,000. They can take 3 weeks to 2-4 months. Some of them are schools that teach nothing but CDL while some schools are Community Colleges that teach many subjects academic and vocational. The schools that only teach CDL generally take 3-6 weeks while the Community Colleges may take a semester ( 2-4 months). Those schools taking months may not be teaching class every day. The 3 weeks schools generally teach for 8-12 hours per day either every day or every week day until they are finished. Some trucking companies operate their own school to get you a CDL. They may not charge you to complete the class and get your CDL if you stay with the company as a driver for a year. One very big company runs their own schools. After you finish school you work for 1 year. Each week the amount you owe them for the cost of your school is decreased, maybe $500, from the original amount, maybe $5000. After 1 year of driving for them they pay an additional $500 per week on top of the money you earn for driving. If you work for them for 2 year you owe nothing for school and have earned a bonus equal to the cost of the school. That company is not a company I would ever work for. They have a bad reputation as a place to work and for poor quality students/drivers.

I always thumbs up your videos, but I beg to differ on a few points. 1. How does a rookie learn to shift on an automatic? 2. How is it worthwhile to go through a mega when they starve their drivers? There are people who have gotten their CDL for free by going through the You Tube academy.

It's only a good way if you dont mind otr for a year first. If you have no desire to travel for weeks at a time and be gone from your family I'd reccomend that people go with a local private school and get on with a local company but few companies are willing to hire new graduates without otr experience. It's a bit of pickle type of situation.

DAY NINETEEN OF TRUCKER SCHOOL On the bright side, it is nice that instructors are shocked that I am still here. They wonder why. Some actually think I am still here because I had repeatedly failed the DMV CDL test and become shocked when I tell them I've only failed it once. "And you're still here? You should have been retested two days later." On the not-so-bright side, it bums you out that hear that you should have been retested five days ago and know that you won't be retested for another five days. The supervisor of the road instructors acted this way when he saw me today and then said, "We need to knock off the rust on your road segment. I'll try to get you out on the road soon. Let me see what I can do." That sure helped my spirits. And he came through. Later today, he took me out and we did the road segment (the actual DMV test route) twice and he said that I'm good to go. He told me that he expects me to get between -10 and -17 points on the road segment from how I drove today. He said you can get up to 1.4 points off every mile of the road test and still pass and I was clocking in at 1.4 points off every five miles. He said that was fine and average. That and, "A pass is a pass and all you need is a pass to get your CDL. You'll pass." Again, everyone was trying to learn the WE-WILL-NEVER-USE driver side parallel park. That and the driver side off-set park. Mixed results. I know I'm not nailing it yet. I'm doing fine with the passenger side off-set and parallel park. The passenger side parallel park being a once-in-your-trucking-career thing. This state is so messed up. My home state of Wisconsin just has you do straight-line backing, off-set backing, and backing up to an actual dock. You know those things you'll do everyday as a trucker. Ugh. Whatever. Went out to dinner with the new instructor and we naturally both bitched about the school. Trading stories. Make each other laugh. Then one of the instructors who is becoming one of the new examiners over at the testing center came in and chatted with us a bit. I told him that students were upset that we couldn't be on the practice range on Labor Day. Told him that we joked with each other that we'd like to be become hired labor FIRST and then get the day off. Also told him some of the students were planning on sneaking onto the practice range and just practice their pre-trip inspections. He thought for a second and said that he'll come in for at least a half day on that day. He asked if the new instructor would too and he said he would. However, he has to get it first approved by the Head Instructor and if he gets the okay, the Assistant Head Instructor (who works the weekend) will make an announcement either tomorrow or Sunday that it will happen. It will be a voluntary day. Not mandated. I really HOPE few students take advantage of it because he and the new instructor are then going to fire up all the trucks, including the road trucks, for use students to learn. Talk about getting saddle time! But if the other students are like me, EVERYONE will show up hoping EVERYONE ELSE won't. LOL!

Can Large Carriers Pull Your CDL If you decide to go to a different company before your contract is up?
@SmartTrucking
@SmartTrucking 5 лет назад
Not that I'm aware of. The CDL is issued by the state and is a license you've earned. They may threaten to do that and ask you for your license, but you don't need to surrender it to them. Only the cops and the courts can take it. Dave

there is a big shortage of bus drivers here. so they will pay for your licence. but there is a reason for the shortage of course hehe. the state schools have many students every year and thats just about free. much better transportation school then the private ones that only train people for the licence test. not the work also. then we have the 18 year olds that start as apptrentices in companies. the state pay you for having them and they dont get full pay as it is school for the two years you train them. after the test then they are a skilled tredesman.
@KevZen2000
@KevZen2000 6 лет назад
Stian Yes there's a shortage, but in general you don't make much as a bus driver, and the hours are crazy, if you wish to work another position, to supplement.
