I've been making short films since I was a kid, as well as a couple of no budget feature films, a ton of RU-vid videos, a handful of unproduced feature scripts, etc. But I wasn't always so productive. In fact there were a couple periods on my life where I went over a year without making anything.
In this video I discuss the biggest mindset shifts that broke my spell of chronic procrastination, and got me writing, making movies, and taking control of my creative life again.
Here's the no zero days Reddit post I mention -

About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Bravo, sir. I was nodding at #1, strongly agreeing at #2, then - mind blown (and Subscribe button clicked) at #3. You didn't even need a #4; you had me at 3. Wait ... there wasn't a #4? (checks back) Darn it. I somehow thought "no zero days" was #4 ☺(embarrassed face). And I didn't even realize that if there actually had been a #4 that it should be a bad thing, because I was loving that it was a GREAT thing. Confession: I'm a creative professional (writer/editor) as well as adult ADHD sufferer, and your words spoke to me. Everything you said certainly applies to all neurotypical creatives, but I don't know if you know just how much it also applies to those of us blessed with inattentive deficit disorder👋and how much we can relate to so much of what you said. Thank you very much for this video. (BTW, even WITH my ADHD, I can focus if I really, really, REALLY want to, and trust me, it says a lot that I watched your entire pitch for Motion Array. Well done, sir. 🙂)

I work as an artist. I make it a point to draw, paint or make something every night. The moments I feel unmotivated are the most important times to get to work on something because if you can do it then, it's a breeze any other time and gives you the discipline for when you have to meet a deadline, like a commission. If I'm having a creative block, I don't try to think of something new. I draw something I've drawn a million times. Sometimes over and over in that moment. Usually in the course of doing that my mind wanders to new ideas. I also prefer to work out ideas with no distractions. No TV, no music. Then, when the process is in motion I might listen to music or something while I work.

This, the moments where you feel lazy, tired and not doing anything are the times that you should be working the most. Working on anything, whether it's sketching ideas, improvising or building something from the ground up. The principle of Wu Wei is very important to me and am realizing only now many years later that some of your best ideas come out of that lazy state. Focusing intently and perfecting things are important but being able to be super productive when not in the mood is how you master your art.

What's wild about procrastination is how we've all broken through the barrier of starting small then finishing a daunting task. Then we go right back to procrastinating.

I cannot express how much starting small has shifted by stress levels. I was putting so much pressure on myself because i wanted to create and upload my magnum opus; a 7 season long comic idea i'm drawing and writing. It was putting so much presssure and stress cause i'm putting so much time effort and energy to making it look good and have a good story with NO prebuilt audience. It is something I feel guilt when I'm not working on it cause I love it, the characters I've worked on over many years and it's near and dear to my heart, but the pressure to have it be perfect and to find an audience that'll pay for it and give me a ROI for all the effort I'm putting in is making me procrastinate on this project and making it less fun for me to even do it. I figured it was much smarter to start with a bunch of small daily or weekly personal comics that are short and low commitment and see if I can comfortably produce that first and build a audience first, get the audience, and THEN release my big passion project. This has lifted so much unnecessary stress and pressure off of me thank you! Start small and aim low kids, it takes a MASSIVE edge off me, I can breathe easy now now that I figured out a better order to do my projects in.

This really hit home. My wife and I made a short on procrastination. I procrastinated for a year before actually making it. 😂 It literally took me one day to shoot, and one day to edit. My wife told me I was truly being myself all things surrounding the film😂 The finished film ended up being 2 1/2 minutes 😐 I’d be honored if you took a look at it. It’s called “day one… Again.”

Such perfect timing. This is so me. I've spent months buying one camera after another, tripods, gimbal, and so on. I've even completed several video editing courses in a variety of softwares (Premiere, Resolve, etc.)... and have yet to record a single video. Couldn't really put my finger on it, but it sounds like it's caused by my perfectionism; in other words, fear of failure. I will definitely be using this video to help get past it. Thank you!

As someone who was at this point multiple times in the past years of filmmaking and photography. It really just helps to get out and do something. Catch a sunrise in the forest, drive to the mountains or a lake and film random things. Just getting started is everything you need to do. If you want to make a youtube video, just place your camera on a tripod, set up the light and audio. And by the time you finished the setup, you'll feel way more motivated already to press this darn record button we all love and fear at the same time. Great quote from Peter McKinnon "Better done than perfect", as perfect will never be a thing. Not even in hollywood.

I've personally bounced back between hobbies and interests, trying to figure out what I want to do. (I've drawn most my whole life and more recently got into photography, editing (photo and video) and wanting to start a POD business.) As of currently, I realized that as much as I'm interested in these things, I need to understand what and how much they mean to me and develop a personal relationship with them. I jumped into most of these interests spontaneously (maybe because I just love doing creative things) but as time goes on, I'm beginning to learn that I need to sharpen my relationship with them for them to go somewhere. This does start with yourself and knowing your priorities, desires, strengths, weaknesses, limits, etc. You're not gonna ever truly know the entirety of yourself to a T, but figuring out these things and choosing to actively (self) reflect helps. Strengthening yourself and understanding your beliefs first will inherent the ability to strengthen your passions. Then, when you're sharpening your passion, motivation and knowledge of things, you can decide what you want to pursue and evolve with it as you gain more understanding and knowledge. I recommend a RU-vid channel by the name of Elizabeth Filips for some insight on this topic, if you're interested. (Sorry if this is a long writing, I think I'm just letting thoughts flow out. Also, I acknowledge that it's different for everyone but I hope my two cents helped to some degree.) Also! I will subscribe to you in support for your now and future endeavours. Take care, my friend!

My motivation recently has been, "don't think of it as work, think of it as fulfillment." I really love that Scorsese said he believes the best creative work is the most personal. Without a doubt my procrastination has been driven by a fear of pouring myself into something only to realize it sucks. That fear has caused a lot of false starts and delays in my work, and your point about looking for the easy dopamine rush of distractions is spot on, because hard work with poor results just feels like torture. I think your advice about writing down all the specific problems onto a list is brilliant. It's amazing how when we have an overwhelming idea or fear, the easiest way to make it approachable is to just start a list and go through each detail one by one. Slowly, over time and with honest introspection and trial-and-error, the right course of action reveals itself from that list of fears. I recently bought a camera and found your channel for some lighting tips, but when I found this video I knew I had to subscribe and keep in touch. Very appreciative for what you're doing!

I've been procrastinating on a webcomic for about 4 years now. Thing is, I've already started it. It's just continuing it is the problem. That zero-day thing really makes a lot of sense. Even if I were to do only one panel(image) a day, that's still SOMETHING done EVERY single day vs not having ANYTHING done at all in a week's succession. That one image every day adds up to 30 images in 30 days which. Definitely gonna try implementing this!

This is my favorite video on RU-vid now. I started photography about 3 years ago and was never too serious until I went on a few vacations and came back with over 1000 photos to edit. I was terrified by how many hours I’d have to spend in a chair at my computer after having done that all day at my job. A few months later and an average of about 5-7 photos a day finally got me to the end. Then on the day after I finished all of them, I went to a car show and shot 600 more pictures 😅 no more zero days for me!

Man, your video is helping me so much right now. We sometimes reach a point in our lives where we forgot *how* to even look at our habits objectively to see destructive patterns or tendencies, and now I'm detailing a list of things to help me organize myself better. Not even just for videos, but with my day job of sales, this is all still applicable. Thank you for putting yourself out there and trying to help people stay organized and motivated. There was a really cool part of one vlog that Burnie Burns put out a few years back that detailed his thoughts on motivation that I'm just remembering now. In summary and paraphrase, it essentially was: "You can't rely on motivation, you need to cultivate *discipline*. Motivation is the emotional component of work, versus the actual action. If you can cultivate discipline, instead of always waiting for motivation to work on your creative project, you can actually create your own motivation. So if you start to find ways to work on what you want to work on, *even when you don't want to*, the discipline you build for yourself will always be much more valuable than any spur of the moment motivation that you think you need to succeed."

This is spot-on! I'm currently quite close to making a living doing music and I noticed people focusing too much on the big picture and getting side-tracked are so many in this industry. They talk about their huge dreams, even say very specific things like "I'm gonna win this award within the year" and then.... well, nothing. Versus the bandleader I'm working for now, who, while knowing exactly what kind of big picture she wants, focus on details as small as "don't forget to get the jacket I got you cleaned by this day" or "you need this specific color of yellow shirt for this TV appearance". She knows exactly what are the daily, weekly, monthly, yearly tasks and goals that she needs to distribute to achiever her vision. I can't say anything else or even the name of the project but it's independent and out first live show ever is scheduled for an estimated 20-30K audience outside! And we are an unsigned band. Beyond my wildest expectations... There is no secret!!!

Very true, honestly. I'm not the most consistent person but one method I've been using rn is to just get into the headspace of "well, ten minutes is still progress" so even if that day I'm not feeling it, I will at least try to do ANYTHING for a project and just not work as much if that day I wasn't in the mood. I found that usually gets me to be more consistent over time, cause every time I get back to it I feel like doing more for whatever I'm working on, be it art or a small Gan project. So hearing you talk about the "No Zero Days" policy was rather interesting. I guess I was close to it when I first tackled my problem with procrastination but now I see maybe I should be more consistent. It's always interesting to hear about these things to be honest.

I haven't entirely got out of the procrastination loop yet, but one action that I found works a lot is to watch my latest release and it gives an hype rush that gets me started 😅 Also my barrier that is akin to #2 is that I am hesitant to start because then afterwards: I find it hard to give it a stop until the next day. A little weird but when giving it a break for ordinary daily duties, the thought of finishing the wip project obsessed me (especially when I materially couldn't work on it for a day or so) and it became a small barrier 😢

Another suggestion should be for people to self-assess the root cause of their procrastination, and to address the root issue as a form of self-care. Sometimes the source of procrastination can come from other things like lack of sleep (I'll admit I'm guilty of this myself), not eating healthy, not exercising, poor mental health, falling down the addictive and bottomless Internet/social media rabbit hole (something else I'll admit I'm also guilty of doing), etc. Often times when we go to start a creative project (or we feel like we're just slogging through it), sometimes people don't realize when they're neglecting themselves in the process and it's unfortunately common for people to do so when creating art. 0_0 Also people should do research into neurodivergency and see if they can get an official diagnosis if their procrastination habits get particularly bad (as well as to find ways to accommodate it to diminish the procrastination habits a little less). For example, my ADD brain tends to be easily distractible depending on my environment and when my electronic addiction gets out of control, so I've slowly been trying to go back to analog drawing at times (though I also do digital sketches occasionally, especially when there's someone to remind me).

I have 3-4 hours to work on my project at the end of the day and instead working on it i watch stream or play video games. Procrastinating is pain in the ass.

The no zero days rule might be a bit unhealthy for someone like me, who has self-worth issues from childhood. I always feel like I should have done better, or more. Making me feel bad if I take a day off doesn't help.

I really think this way too with some advice that sounds like that. The interesting thing I noticed about what you said (and thank you for saying it, really!) is that you are already aware that doesn’t really work for you and your well being and you can use or not use something if it is not a good fit or adapt into your life. I am just sharing because many times I felt and feel this way!

Hey at least you've already nailed the main problem and you can immediately start working on helping that side of yourself grow and become better. Remember, self help and therapy aren't supposed to make you better than your lows. They're supposed to bring your lows up to par with the rest of you, so you can live a better and happier life

Thanks so much for the video.... super helpful. I'm currently making an animated short and I suffer from being overwhelmed too much. It really really feels like just too much sometimes. But your advice makes sense and I'll definitely follow that. I love the definition of procrastination at the end. I've never thought of it that way and totally makes sense. Thanks again. Great video :)

I remember feeling guilty for never finishing my film project but then I realized I wasn’t so much procrastinating as I was prioritizing my responsibilities in life providing for my family & taking care of them. The film project would have been fun but it also wouldn’t do anything for my family or make us any money.

Good video, I would like to add, that some level of procrastination, and self empathy is necessary for creativity. It’s not something that you want too much of, or too little of. Your brain fuels your own creative drive with external thoughts and experiences; sometimes completely unrelated to the things you like to make. So have empathy with yourself, and don’t try to force work too much. Otherwise you’ll end up white knuckle-ing all the things you make. And in my experience, they will not turn out. Doing that will only frustrate you into not wanting to work, and make you procrastinate even more, until you hate the thing you once loved. And not only that, but it can put you in a bad headspace, from feeling guilty and ashamed. Which will only send you further down the spiral. All of us creatives have been there. Find things you love, and excite you, and let those drive your obsession to create. Creative people are ALWAYS searching for new things to ignite their passion. Never stop exploring.
