Why Crimes of Grindelwald Failed According to Pixar

I feel like fantastic beasts should have been a Netflix show, where for the first season they dod a beast of the weeks, but very subtly introducing the gindlewald plot in the deep background slowly pulling it forward until it’s the main issue near the end of the show. It would give it more time to be fleshed out we actually get to see new and unique fantastic beasts, and they could still keep all the characters and they could have meaningful arcs and growth but I guess not...is it too early for a reboot?

"So your only skill is being a Zoologist? Perfect! You're the only person who can hunt the ultimate dark wizard!" "Ummm... How does that make the slightest bit of sense?" "Sense? Is that some muggle mumbo-jumbo?"

Anyone else really wanna see more of this? I'd love to see them take Pixar's 22 Rules to other movies, both good and bad, to identify which ones are good or bad (according to Pixar).

I was intentionally super vague so it would be more difficult, but I can guarantee everyone who reads this comment knows the answer.

Most economical telling of COG: Two manipulative magical masterminds "aquire" "mentees" to weaponize against each other to circumvent their blood pact. Except we let one off the hook for it because he's the "good guy". (I just love it everytime Newt calls out Dumbledore on this).

Once upon a time there was a man, every day he flew around the galaxy stealing from everyone. One day he picks up a magical rock and because of that the bad guy, who also wants it, steals it from him and his new buddies, and because of that they must go after him, until finally they take back the rock with a dance off.

All the fans wanted was a series of movies with Newt and his friends traveling around the world and facing magical creatures... the exploration of the Grindel/Dumbledore toxic romance could have been it's own thing or at least introduced later in the series... it felt like a messy mashup of too much happening.

Because of that, he goes on a quest to rescue a princess. Because of that, he falls in love with said princess. Until finally he defeats the selfish lord and marries the princess. Guess that movie

Pretty much the golden rule of film is this: the audience needs to root for the main character. If they don't care about them, or the journey they're on, it's dead on arrival. *And the problem with Crimes of Grindelwald is simple:* there's too much going on yet at the same time there's also not enough happening as well.

Let's be real, the reason why Crimes of Grindelwald FAILED was because of several reasons: (1) WHERE ARE THE CRIMES!? (2) There are too many plots happening and by showing all of these plotlines, it confuses the audience as to what exactly the story it is try to tell. (3) J.K. Rowling tries to be fan service-y but it doesn't add anything, she just retcons aspects of the Wizarding World. (4) J.K. Rowling is NOT a screenwriter, which is different from being an author. Warner Brothers need to hire a screenwriter to work with her to condense all that story into something that is watchable. (5) J.K. Rowling should have written the full story out and then decide how to bring that story to the big screennot vice versa.

Because of that, her parents stumbled into an area and took things not meant for them and were punished by being turned into animals. Because of that she had to work at a witch’s bathhouse where she doesn’t fit in. Until finally she re-remembers and falls in love with the boy who saved her from drowning years ago and helps both her parents, the boy and herself attain their freedom again.

I really like newt as a reluctant hero he plays that part perfectly, he doesn't want to be the big hero that saves the world (he's happy leaving that to his brother) he is just happy being a magizoologist

Once upon a time there was an archeologist. Everyday, he taught college classes. One day, he is told to find an ancient, lost artifact. Because of that, he goes looking for it in the desert. Until finally, the artifact melts Nazis.

Once upon a time there was a farm boy. Every day, he helped his uncle on the farm. One day, two robots on the run from the evil fascist government arrive and one of them escapes. Because of that, the farm boy meets a hermit living in the desert. Because of that, he goes with him to give the robots back to the princess in danger. Until finally they rescue the princess, the hermit dies to save the hero and he blows up the government's weapon. The end.

My top 3 reasons why this movie failed: 1. The movie spent a long time building up suspense with little to no pay off, which made it hugely disappointing. Instead of making a stand alone movie, they made a filler movie that only exists to introduce new characters and set up new storylines for the third movie. 2. The tone of the entire movie was off and completely unlike the first movie. There was too much of a focus on politics and not enough on the main characters and magical creatures. In my opinion, this is not what the fanbase is looking for in this series and it left many viewers bored. 3. There were far too many new and/or minor characters that the audience was expected to empathize with and care about, but they were introduced so quickly that viewers have no time to develop any emotional investment in them.

A Dumbledore-centric movie series of his early life prior to HP would have been infinitely better. We know enough as established in the books (book 7 really) to have a more secure and pre-written plot, and he’s a fascinating character with depth and almost unparalleled power that it would be cool to see on screen.

“Doesn’t seem to understand the nature of things that he deems as simple.” This is one of those moments that you were talking about in the theme section where it’s a really cool idea but it’s just an idea. However the other thing that I think it could be linking back to was the idea of Voldemort underestimating the magical ability of things that he deemed underneath him as well. I feel like Rowling has all of these illusions between the two villains. That is why we see a house elf (and his magic) being able to get around all the magic to get into the cave to get the horcrux in the sixth book. When a wizard could not. Because Voldemort didn’t protect his horcux against the house elf’s magic because he didn’t see it as something he should worry about

When reading the books and watching the movies I've always wondered, is there any form of magic that Muggles can actually perform? Not wand-magic or spells and charms and such. But what about potion making? Divination? Travelling by broom or floo powder? Do you actually need to have magical blood to do any of these things? Would love to hear your thoughts SCB! As part of an exercise after the play, they showed us a script for the play condensed to a duration of one minute. Loads of characters were cut, none were combined, but the part that stuck with me was that Paris (Juliet's arranged husband) only had one line: 'Alas, I am slain!'

Because of that, he accidentally prevents his parents from falling in love, jeopardizing his existence. Because of that, he has to try to match them up himself. Until finally, his dad punches out the bully and woos his mom, allowing him to return to his own time.

Once upon a time there was a young girl who lived in her home town with her parents. Every day, she went to school and played her favorite sport with her best friend. One day, her father along with her family had to move to a different city for his work. Because of that she became lonely as she no longer had friends and her parents were too busy to keep her company. Because of that she slowly became unable to feel any emotions and made the irrational decision to go back home. Until finally, she was able to come back into herself and balance her emotions with the help of her family.

Actually - exposition is when a story presents information without drama. "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power" - exposition. "No, I am your father" - drama.

To be honest the best part of that movie was finding out in a different wizard culture muggles are called CANT SPELLS. Me and my friends can't take that moment seriously.

Plus, you didn’t even mention what the writers did with Queenie, which makes the first movie less fun to watch. And the first movie was GOOD!

Once upon a time, there was a novelist. Every day, she worked on her books about a young wizard. One day, someone turned her books into a film franchise. Because of that, she became even more popular and praised than before. Because of that, she decided she was as good as her fans said, and started trying to do something other than the novels her fans loved. Until finally, we were given this film that would be easily passed off as garbage fanfiction if she wasn't the one who wrote it.

I don't know, but I get the feeling the Rowling wanted to tell the story of Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and the doomed, toxic, gay romance that pushed Albus to romantic isolation and self impose political unimportance for the rest of his life; and the studio didn't think that would be family friendly, so we ended up with barely coherent Newt and his magical petting zoo. All doomed, of course because Rowling is a great novelist, but a mediocre novice screenplay writer.

I feel like if j.k Rowling did what she did with harry potter and wrote books before the movies it would have been better

Couldn’t agree more. This movie was so full of unnecessary plot lines and characters, I remember leaving the theater confused and disappointed. Hopefully the next movie will be better and, like you said, this will just be one (not so great) chapter of the full story.

As much as I love Newt, he just isn't the fitting main character for the whole Grindelwald Story. Or Grindelwald isn't the antagonist for Newt. His story could have ended after the first film.

Because of that, they happen upon a young boy who happens to have the highest count of metachlorians they have ever seen. Until finally, they unknowngly create a monster who will break all of their codes and bring about their destruction.

Because of that, he met an old wizard and decided to help him rescue the princess. Because of that, he and his new friends infultrated a space station to rescue said princess. Until finally he helped the princess destroy the space station and saved the day. Huh, real tough one to guess, this one!

Crimes of Grindelwald's problem: Newt We all love Newt, but he really has wondered into the wrong story 😔

Once upon a time there was a rich self centered billionaire. Everyday he would drink and party and not really care about anyone, Until One day, he gets kidnapped in a foreign country and gets shrapnel in his chest forcing him to have a reactor so he doesn’t die, because of that he builds a suit to escape, and while he’s there he sees his weapons in the wrong hands and being used to harm people and then makes it back to his mansion safely. Because of that he stops weapon production and builds a suit used to help people, but then his “uncle” goes against him and steals his technology. Until finally he confronts him and they battle causing “uncle” to die. After this he confronts the press saying the famous line “I am ____ ___”

This is absolutely fascinating. I never knew Pixar had this and, as a writer, I really want a poster of these rules on my wall now. They’re amazing. Lots of people bring up really good and interesting points in the comments as to why the movie failed, but what I found interesting from the video itself is that it seems like ultimately it boiled down to the main character not choosing a side. (It’s possible he could have picked a side and it could have failed anyways, but that’s the one thing I heard you coming back to.) I liked Pixar’s phrasing, that a passive character (especially a main character) is *poison* to the audience. I think that makes a lot of sense. Of course we don’t find the story very compelling…Newt himself was never compelled, and he’s the protagonist we’re supposed to most identify with. That was rule one. A movie needs to be about the main character. If it’s not, it makes sense it falls apart. People tend to fall more in love with other characters, but there’s still a reason they’re not the protagonist, and shouldn’t be. “Hey look, this character is interesting” won’t successfully substitute for a main character…doing their job being the main character.

One day he decides that he wants to figure out where he came from and what his purpose in the world is. Because of that, he figures out that he is the son of two gods and that his god - ness (?) was taken away by his evil uncle. And, in order for him to become a god again he has to become a "true hero". Because of that, he goes to train to become a hero by a satyr and meets this lovely lady named ____ (but her friends call her ___, at least they would if she had any friends). Until finally he saves the lady from his evil uncle and the underworld and gets the chance to be a god again but doesn't so that he can stay on earth with the lovely lady (aw).

Once upon a time there was a midget. Everyday he lived comfortably in his home, never doing anything exiting. One day a mysterious old man appeared at his door, wanting to know if he would like to do something exiting. Because of that he went on a quest. Because of that he found a ring. Until finally the quest ended and he when back to his comfortable home.

This one has 2 parts Part 1 Once upon a time there was a mad man. Every day his population died out until only he was left. One day decided to cut down on the population of the universe. Because of that he hunted down magical rocks. Because of that a group of heroes tried stop stop him. Until finally, he achieved his goal of halving the universe's population. Part 2 Once upon a time there was a really smart guy with a suit of armor. Every day after the events of part 1, he took care of a family and coped with part 1's ending. One day the rest of part 1's heroes came to him and asking him to help. Because of that he went back in time to get some magic rocks. Because of that the peoe who were killed in part 1 were revived and the villain came back to destroy the universe. Until finally the smart man sacrificed himself to save the universe.

This movie fails the Chekov's Gun test multiple times. For those of you who don't know, the famous playwright Chekov once said "If you show the audience a gun in Act I, you have to fire it in Act II." Meaning, essentially, nothing in a story should ever be pointless and anything you DO show should have plot relevance. And this movie...doesn't do that much. At all.

Because of that, he ended up on an island filled with living dinosaurs. Because of that, he was in mortal danger, along with others on the island, when the dinosaurs escaped. Until finally, he and the others are rescued from the island.

Crimes of Grindelwald? What about the crime of Harry putting his name in da Goblet of Fiyah

For the first point you made: writer's try to use an idea called "need vs. want". The "need" is something that the character HAS to accomplish, whether it be defeating an evil overlord or just finding a home. The "want" is something the character feels they should do. In this case, Newt WANTED to clear things up with Leta. However, it wasn't executed very well. The drama between Tina and Newt was one hundred percent random. It barely related to the first movie. It was plot driven (to get him to the end of the movie), not character driven (decisions that a character would have made if they were a real person. Every author wants to do this). I hope that made sense, I'm trying to improve my writing and this is something my LA teacher taught me. 😁

One day, a big bad guy from the top of some cosmic tree thing shows up with a big staff which can control people. Because of that he went insane and killed himself again and again. Because of that he lost his sense of self importance and tried to live each day as well as he could. Until finally the woman he loved fell in love with the man he'd become, and a new day dawned.

Why Crimes of Grindelwald failed: There were no crimes committed by Grindelwald 😂 Also Happy Birthday, Jonathan!!

ok here's an obscure one (I'll give you a clue, it's a book series). Once upon a time there was a writer named David. Every day he would struggle to find enough money for rent or food. One day he found an offer for a spare room in a house owned by a potter named Liz (a person that works with clay, not a relative of Harry) and her daughter. Because of that, he discovers a world full of magic and strange history after he learns the clay dragons Liz makes can come to life. Because of that he gets embroiled in a century long conflict between polar bears, unicorns, dragons, witches, ghost phoenixes and gargoyles. Until finally, the forces of darkness are vanquished using everything David has learnt about the magical world and all the people and creatures he's met along the way. Good luck.

Once upon a time there was a boy who invented things. Everyday, his inventions would keep up his roommate, though. Because of this he missed the winning point at his baseball game and spiralled. Until finally, he broke and made it his life's goal to get revenge on the boy who spent his days making inventions.

When you got to step 15 and explained what you would have done as Newt, I thought there would be an interesting conflict if Newt had started looking for Credence. Credence has never felt like he belonged or was taken care of except with Tina and later, Newt. He was betrayed by Graves in the first movie and that impacted him a lot (this is an understatement of course). So, for Newt to start looking for him, no matter his true intentions, because of The Ministry (almost like a hunt), would make him feel that betrayal again by someone he thought was a good and decent person. Someone who would finally be there for him. Who knows, maybe that could have led him to consider going with Grindelwald because he doesn't know what is right and wrong anymore or wants the power to not be in that position anymore. That tip really opened up a story that I think could have been more put together, but maybe not super different from the first one which is a problem. It could change with the addition of Dumbledore; Credence trying to find out who he is; Tina and Newt's relationship and their falling out (which could also have been handled a bit better, I think.) Once upon a time there was a boy who just wanted to stand out and be noticed by the girl he liked. Every day he had to suffer from the embarrassment of the fact that his father was so goofy. Because of that he interrupted a student rally and asked out the girl he liked. Because of that his father took him on a cross country vacation. Because of that he had to cancel his date. Because of that he lied to her and told her he was going to be on stage with their favourite musician. Because of that he lied to his father the entire trip. Until finally his father found out, but understood why his son did that and helped him get on stage. But as it turned out he never had to do any of that because she already liked him since the first time she heard him laugh. Ah-Hyuk!

Once upon a time there was a very short man who lived on his farm with his wife and two kids. Every day, he worked hard and dreamed of becoming the village magician’s apprentice. One day, his children found a baby on the river and the family took her (the baby) into their home. Because of this, the village was attacked and they decided to go on a quest to find someone to take care of the baby. Because of that, the main character met people trying to stop an evil queen and decided to help them. Until finally, the main character assisted in defeating the evil queen and returned home to his family. Good luck! Once upon a time, there was a young woman. Everyday she felt unfit for the role society forced upon her. One day, the army recruits her father for an urgent war against northern invaders. Because of that, in order to protect her fragile old father, she dresses up as a man and enlists in his place. Because of that, while training and fighting the enemy army, she learns that she's a great warrior and strategist. Until finally, she defeats the enemy and saves her entire country.

I mean, look, JK Rowling said everything will be explained. We're looking at this movie as a sequel to Fantastic Beasts, and that's why everyone's mad at how little sense it made, and how much of nothing happened, but really, it's just part 2 of 5. So in the grand scheme of things, we're still just introducing this story, and I can't wait to see what happens. If it were a stand-alone movie or just a sequel, yeah I'd feel differently about it, but nobody watched The Chamber of Secrets, for instance, and said "what a horrible movie, so many things were unresolved, why are we even being introduced to Tom Riddle? Why did he put himself in a book?" etc. because eventually, we learn it was a horcrux, and that it's all connected. Crimes of Grindlewald is the second instalment out of five. Give it a minute.

Newt is probably my utmost favorite character of this entire franchise. That said, it really does seem really awkward to have him be the main character in plots that he's only tangentially involved in.

I'm reminded of something Rowling once said in an interview... _"The lake is the setting for the second task that the Triwizard competitors must face in Goblet of Fire, which is also my favourite task. However, the Whomping Willow provided a more satisfying, less distracting crash, and served a later purpose in Prisoner of Azkaban, too. The Great Lake (which is really a Scottish loch, apparently freshwater and landlocked) never did develop as a portal to other seas or rivers, although the appearance of the Durmstrang ship from its depths in Goblet of Fire hints at the fact that if you are travelling by an enchanted craft, you might be able to take a magical shortcut to other waterways."_ If Newt had been surprised by Dumbledore asking him when they met and take his Kelpie with him from his home to Hogsmeade, and they met in the dead of night outside Honeydukes and Dumbledore suddenly showing up from _inside_ said shop, asking him to be quiet as not to wake up the owners in the upstairs flat and brought him into Hogwarts castle, where they would sneak outside and walk to the edge of the Great Lake.There, Dumbledore converse with the Merpeople, and told Newt that if he releases his Kelpie into the lake, the Merpeople had agreed to escort him to one of the secret passages underwater that would bring him out to sea, and that he could journey from there to France. Just release the Kelpie, have Dumbledore wish Newt good luck before Newt climbs into the case, Dumbledore closes it, locks it, casts an Impervius Charm on it so it will repel water and tosses it in after the Kelpie, which shoots dramatically up from the water, the case carefully tucked between its teeth, and then disappears back underwater. BOOM. That's how there would've been a pay-off to the Kelpie. How is it Rowling didn't think of this?
