Messi and Cristiano kept La Liga as the most profitable soccer league in the world and by extention their own teams, and their team contributions were beyond what they were being paid. They dominated the sport for way longer than any athlete in that sport did before, just like Lebron with his extremely long prime. The economy of soccer is a different animal, and the only reason Messi and Cristiano didn't get paid more is that in Europe there was actually a cap instituted, which is precisely why Barca couldn't renew Messi, and they knew it was coming for a while, and they didn't prepare cause they were expecting to manipulate Messi to stay for half. They surprised Messi with that number, and he actually accepted to help his team, but they had messed up so badly that they couldn't even fit half of his salary into the cap, so they tried to get him to play for free at the last minute. He went on a weekend getaway with his family fully expecting to return to the 50% reduced contract, only to be scrambling at the last minute to find a new team to play for.

@olithegamer2578 that's the trade off a superstar on the back end of his prime vs a superstar on the verge of his team being over his off court issues. The money in the contracts align as well. Memphis would be a top 3 team favored to win the championship and Portland would get a young talented player.
