Why Darth Bane Established the Rule of Two 

Once more the SITH will rule the galaxy and we shall have... peace.

two there shall be, no more, no less. one to embody the power, the other to crave it. the reason the rule of two died was not just because of vader killing sidious but because it was abandoned. Darth sidious wanted to achieve immortality and stay the sith lord and keep a Neverending supplie of apprentices. the initial promotion ritual for the rule of two was that once the apprentice was convinced the master had no more to reach him/her, the apprentice would then seek out their own apprentice. one a suitable candidate was found the apprentice would then challenge the master in a one-on-one dual to the death. the winner would take the candidate found the the last apprentice as the new one. this insured that even if the apprentice was too weak and was killed by the master, the master would have a suitable replacement right there to start training immediately. this required a level of selflessness and loyalty to the order because each master was in actuality, training their own murderer. Darth bane even stated at one point that if the master is unwilling to make such an important and nessisary sacrifice, then the sith order has already suffered a mortal wound, and it's death is inevitable. which is exactly what happened with darth sidious.

Let us also not forget that Banes system did accomplish the Siths goal of taking control of the galaxy.

Many excellent points! What's more, I should add, even with the death of Sidious and Vader, Palpatine had a series of lesser apprentices and the Inquisitors to fill the power vaccuum. He must have had faith that the strongest would emerge and reestablish the Rule of Two.

everyone realize that Darth Bane's realization, that the Sith had lost their ways, from which they started from the ancient Sith, he realized that all their views we're flawed etc etc etc, Sounds familiar doesn't it!?! like Luke realizing that Obi-Wan and Yoda new that Yoda's generation of Jedi had lost their ways of their ancient Jedi brothers and sisters, Yoda knew this, Obi-Wan new this, Yoda admits this, but neither of them ever tell Luke so his new generation of Jedi failed because they were based off the teachings, the ways of Yoda's generation of Jedi, now Luke knows the truth and just how flawed Yoda's generation of Jedi had become, we all know that in the EU Luke's new generation of Jedi we're pretty much all Grey Jedi, using both Light side and Dark side powers having found balance, able to use their emotions, have relationships, love etc etc etc, Luke and Kyle Katarn being perfect examples, I Am NOT saying that Bane and Luke mirror each other exactly but what they discovered and the way they discovered it kinda​ does, Bane knew that change had to come in order for the Sith to survive, overcome, endure etc, pretty much the same thing Luke has come to realize, that the Jedi lost their ways, and change is needed.

The rule of two finally came to an end with the death of Lumiya and Darth Caedus in 41 ABY. But the Sith can never die. Instead they evolve and a new order arose in the form of the One Sith, lead by Darth Krayt for over 100 years. "Don't look so surprised. The Rule of Two was a huge gamble but was also the best possible choice for sith as a whole. The entire philosophy of the Sith order about pursuing power by any means necessary just wasn't sustainable for a large organization of dark side users. Without a common enemy to fight, a larger sith order would very quickly devolve into infighting and destroy itself. While a gamble, the rule of two did technically pay off, if only for a couple of decades. If you wanted a large organization of Dark side force users like the Jedi order, then it would have to follow a different philosophy than the sith.

This idea has been killing me, why did Yoda die from old age only 20 some years after his quite healthy hey day?

Darth Revan and Bane should be two Anthology movies that should be made, as their Philosophy is what brings the Order of Two to be formulated - first proposed by Revan and Impose under Bane. Suggested video - Is there an establish lineage of Sith Between Zannah and Tenebrous? Considering that's worth 900+ years worth to look at the Sith taught in that line and their achievements before the time of Darth Tenebrous, Plagueis' Master.

In a way, Darth Bane was the "New Hope" of the Sith Order. Sith'ari and all that.

Great video again. I love anything to do with Darth Bane. Kahn and the brother hood of darkness were so afraid of competition that they dropped the Darth title from there names because it issued a challenge to other Sith lords. I love that Bane came back to the academy and in front of everyone named himself Darth Bane, issuing the challenge to all who dare step forward. He was such a bad ass.

Reven was a very respected sith. So why didn't he implement the rule of two. Seeming he had already noticed the floors in the current sith ideology.

The rule of two is absolutely brilliant, No more, no less. I love it. Seriously,? How many people can you teach and whittle them down until you find a good pupil. Bane was right.

Darth Bane actually weakened the Sith in the real world by doing this "Rule of Two" nonsense. Look at the Sith Lords that came before him: They could do things that the modern Sith could not even imagine doing. I honestly think that Bane was not the Sith'ari but the prophesied one to destroy the Sith.

Obviously the Rule of Two is because the Sith are ruthlessly competitive, and if there wree more than one apprentice then they could gang up on the Master.

i don't understand why darth bane is canon revan should be canon also.. the reason why bane created the rule of two? revans teachings it makes sense! not like the canon we got bane created the rule of two becuse? and he knew that would make the sith stronger than ever becuse? there is no answer to that in canon!

I personally fail to see how waiting for an enemy to become weak and overthrowing them when that happens is an example of strength. The rule of two sith also became weaker in the years between killing their master and finding an apprentice as they were too busy playing politician and hiding in the shadows to freely practice and grow their Dark Side prowess. Lord Momin was a fanatical fool but he was right about one thing, The Sith had indeed become Jedi obsessed weaklings.

You know funny thing about the brotherhood of darkness when you learn about them you realize that the brotherhood isn't to different from the jedi order in the prequel movies. For which each group was letting internal politics destroy them. In the brotherhoods case it was from sith trying to rise over other sith. Where in the jedi it was actual politics cause the jedi had basically surrendered to the will of the Senate instead of the will of the force. Which in both groups eventually weakened them to the point of near extinction or extinction in the brotherhood's case. In fact I could rival that both groups mirrored each other so much in that regard that they are almost the same group both following a failing philosophy but unable or unwilling to see it until it was far to late. Which is why I feel that both groups needed to die in some cases threw the lore one group either jedi or sith can be nearly destroyed but they always come back stronger. If only for a time having fixed past weakness. So it will be interested in the new cannon and everything which way both groups will continue to grow and how much they will have to steal from legends to do so. Cause let's face it Disney you think it's not a good idea if it isn't yours, but if you can get away with stealing it you will do so and do it shamelessly.

Something I never quite understood is if or how a Dark Lord's power is passed on to the apprentice upon their deaths. Does every Dark Lord have a holocron that they store their knowledge in? Maybe some type of "quickening"? It seems to me that with the Sith desire for power, both containing and maintaining it, that it would be illogical for a Sith Lord to teach their apprentice their most powerful abilities. Sith Apprentices, by definition are there to "crave the power", it seems highly probable that an apprentice would kill their master when the opportunity presents itself, rather than waiting until the master has run out of knowledge to pass on.

Here is my theory.. Darth Vader is Snoke.. Ezra or Maul is the first Knight of Ren (Revan). And what Darth Vader began was to destroy and rebuild the Sith as he saw fit.. Just as Revan's lightside became one with the Force, so did Darth Vader. Only the Darkside prevented him from fully dying.. He used the teachings of Ancient Sith n what he learned from Sidious and his Master to cheat death.. Sidious clearly admitted so. " to cheat death, is the Power ONLY ONE HAS ACHIEVED." Implying Sidious knew he trully didnt kill his Master. And if i am correct. We will get another.. "Your grandfather isnt dead, I Am Your Grandfather!!!!"... Vader is the Cash cow of Star Wars.. Period... Of course i could be wrong.. But look closely to how VaderVader's mask looks. Then compare it to how Snoke looks.. Where the mask melted more is where Snoke's eye and the side of his mouth is all messed up n disfigured. The Disney called in Hayden to shoot his face again. And The way Snoke looks was the end result.. His vocal cords might have been damaged in the fire at the end of ROTJ. Hence why Hayden didnt do the Voice of Snoke... Whats going on in Rebels with that Sith Holocron is at the heart of what is going on in the Movies.. What did Vader do all those years under the shadow of Sidious?? Anakin was wise beyond his years, he wasnt going to just be Sidious's puppet.. He clearly told Padme, " make the galaxy the way we want it to be"... Make a video on this topic. Zannah wasnt a coward tho .. she was just buying her time so she could seek her own apprentice.. then challenge bane.. if she fell.. then her apprentice would become bane's new apprentice if bane saw them worthy.. and vice versa if bane were to fall by zannah she would take the. title as dark lord begin training her new apprentice. . so basically it was big misunderstanding on both there parts.. in the end they did fight and while bane had the upper in saber combat and raw strength zannah still came out victorious.. the entire rule of 2 premise is unrealistic. In reality, if there's a warlord of immense power who rules a region, any aspiring tyrants or challengers to this warlord, instead of challenge him will simply move to establish their reign in an area sufficiently far away from said warlord. And don't try to say that the galaxy isn't big enough for more than 2 sith. The canon has established planets that are difficult to reach.

Legends continuity is the original canon. Disney did say that when they announced the old EU no longer being main canon but still regarded as old canon (meaning original). Legends is its own canon. A separate continuity.

I just got finished playing the KotoR games, and I was wondering which version of Darth Revan was the (formerly) Canon one?

The Rule of Two is not perfect as Bane believed it to be. The Sith Rule of Two was designed to eliminate the Jedi. Once the Jedi were mostly destroyed and with no enemies to fight, Vader and Sidious turned on each other and their Order imploded. Unlike the Jedi who thrived on peace and order, the Sith flourished on conflict and chaos. Simply put, the Jedi are peacekeepers that are not fit to fight wars, while the Sith are warmongers who cannot maintain peace. Bane didn't consider what will happen after the Jedi destruction. Remember, he made this rule from Revan's incomplete teachings as the Halocron was damaged, hence his information is somewhat flawed. This flaw turned out to be fatal as there was no Sith left after the death of Vader and Sidious. What Revan truly meant was that a Sith should constantly seek out power and invite challenge to keep themselves sharp. He advised to keep the apprentices to one only to lower the treachery within their ranks. He never said that there should be only two Sith at any time. Bane only had half the pieces of the puzzle but only saw what he wanted to see. His perfect Rule of Two was doomed to failure from the beginning and he didn't even know it. Then again arrogance was always the downfall of Sith.

Good video. I think the rule of two was a bad decision on Darth Bane's part, though. It neglects to factor in the fact that a Sith Master may loose power as they age, allowing a weaker Apprentice to kill them when that student is in their prime. Even if the student was not as powerful as the Master was in their prime. It also doesn't factor in treachery which can be just as, if not more, effective than simply getting one of their contemporaries to help gang up on the master. It's a good base concept but it really should have been thought through more.

On the rule of two. I know Darth Maul was his apprentice. But I always wondered about Count Dooku, and General Greivous, Was they his apprentices also was he breaking the rule of two? Was that part of his plan all along? Thanks!

You made excellent points but nonetheless the Rule of Two is extremely fragile. Since there are only max. 2 Sith - 1 in a time of transition - the Sith Order is extremely vulnerable to extinction. If there only 1 Sith and he makes a mistake which causes his death the entire order dies as well. If there are two Sith and the apprentice challenges the master but overestimates his chances it's very possible that the two Sith would kill each other in a duel or that one would win but the other one would die later because of the injuries. And this flaw was proofed in the Return of the Jedi. The apprentice killed the master but died of the injuries and as a result the entire Sith Order was gone.
