This is covered in the Legends continuity. In 188 BBY a fallen Jedi padawan led a Dark Jedi rebellion against the Republic and Jedi order. At some point within the seven-year conflict, he came to know about the existence of the Sith and their new guiding principle under the Rule of Two. During his final moments, he confessed to his Jedi vanquishers that their enemy had survived and operated under a system known as the Rule of Two - one master and one apprentice. Despite this knowledge being revealed to the order, his warning was interpreted as a false, mad rambling and so it was ignored. Only when Darth Maul revealed himself one hundred and fifty years later did the Jedi including Yoda who had been alive at the time of the original conflict realise that he had been telling the truth.

Because Bane was thought to be destroyed before episode I. So the Jedi were aware of the rule of two. However they thought they got rid of it when Bane died.

They've picked up rumors that the Sith have returned.

Darth Bane allowed a rumor to spread a little after he picked up Zahna as an apprentice I believe. He figured tumors would stir and keep them off the true trail of the Sith.

Yeah, as everyone else said, several factors. Canon or not, this is how it goes, apparently. Palpatine was REALLY good with the force. He concealed his "scent" and even wore a mask that changed his physical appearance(not a literal mask.) Through alchemy, he kept the negative effects of the darkside from showing, so he looked handsome. So, he hid himself visibly, also through the force. THEN, there is the fact that the jedi apparently built a temple on TOP of a sith temple to try to destroy its negative effects...in reality, it slowly corrupted the jedi for thousands of years, clouding their senses.

Ya know. I like the insight but I think I may have found a reason for why the jedi may just automatically claim whatever dark side energy they sense to be from the sith, and not other dark side users. It could possibly be that the jedi could have only sensed someone or something that was strong in the dark side, which it seems that there might just not have been many past the sith who could have actually had a strong connection to the dark side. I do not like this theory much though, as who says there could not just be other strong dark side users besides the sith?

This RU-vid Channel It is just a matter of a bad idea. The Sith intentionally reducing themselves to and maintaining two and only two members for "strength" proves logistically impossible whenever you try to put it into an actual story-- it would logistically impossible to maintain for a single generation, much less asserting they did it for a thousand years without miraculously being wiped out. They want to claim that it was only after Palpatine where you suddenly got a master who went through multiple apprentices, all of whom decided to start passing on their teachings as soon as they became independent enough and some of whom escaped with their lives and then began teaching students, in addition to actively trying to manipulate jedi to the dark side (or jedi just turning to the dark side on their own). The very nature of the dark side, how it is described and what it is said to do tells one that this was completely inevitable and would have happened with every generation. And that's why they need to put caveats. That Jedi who turn to the dark side because of tragedies they suffered or out of ambition or frustration are not technically "Sith" and the apprentices of apprentices are not technically "Sith". Or that the dozen other dark side traditions are not technically "Sith".... even if they probably get drawn to and learn from various sith ruins scattered across the hundreds of planets to learn. There were probably dozens of "not TECHNICALLY 'Sith' by the twisted way we need to define it to make this rule of two thing work, but pretty much the same thing" active at all times.

After Bane saw the most powerful force ability the Sith could command, a Thought Bomb, which also goes against the Sith's selfish nature being suicidal, fail to cripple the Jedi. He realized the true power of the dark side is in its ability to subvert, corrupt, manipulate but its self-serving nature would always lead to infighting and sub-ordinance. The dark side would never be able to draw the raw numbers to beat the Jedi, or the raw power to overwhelm them, so he saw, through Foresight that the only way the sith could take them down is long-term infiltration and corruption, not by conflict and the easiest way to prevent the sith from distracting themselves from this goal (as they often did in the past) and also staying hidden was to reduce their numbers to the minimum amount needed to achieve victory, for all intents and purposes 2; one to hold power and direct the plan, the other to crave power and enact the plan, and so on and so on.

That's why they doubt about it in TPM. You can't even follow the movies, can't ya?

Up to this point the sith had never gone to such a small number. They always built an army of force sith. So sensing dark side energy without reports anywhere of anything outside of cult like behavior was what they would have seen. Half the plan of the Rule of Two was changing the ways they had operated. They had always tried brute force. Never hiding in plain sight and amassing power within corporations and the underworld. They had been conquerors , so the Jedi were ready for the old Sith.

Palpatine scheming is kind of the whole point of the Rule of Two. The point was to wait in the shadows with individuals gathering power without alerting the Jedi. Bane never attacked the Jedi outright, even though he was immensely powerful and could take on multiple Jedi at once, because he knew that the Jedi were too strong at the time to beat. He started the long con. Having the Sith train in secret, biding their time until one had amazed enough power, both in the Force and politically, to strike at the Jedi. And even then Palps/Sids didn't actually strike himself. He let his army do it for him, because he was the Supreme Chancellor/Emperor. By laying in wait, patiently gathering not only Force power, but political as well, the Rule of Two succeeded in the Sith ruling the galaxy and, as they thought, wiping out the Jedi. That was the goal of the Rule of Two and it damn near succeeded. That does not make it "stupid"

I Am The Ruyn So it means the Rule of Two is a rule of being coward? For all Sith bluster they are just coward hiding in shadow and only take advantage on corrupt system. Like i said, the Rule of Two only successful by this way, and not any other way, it's limited to this way only. It is stupid, because they could failed, like i mentioned if Palpatine making wrong calculation or mistake, he being killed by Windu or got busted early and it's the end of the Sith. The Sith themselves being limited into two are so vulnerable to be eliminated forever. The Sith are indeed living creature, imperfect, they must make sure their own survival from time to time because being limited by two for not being killed by accidents, diseases or just fool death out of any reason...

my friend, i highly recommend that you read the darth bane trilogy of books. while not canon, there is literally not a better source to learn about the rule of two and learn why it is the way it is.

I think its important to remember that the Sith are all about survival. In their minds if the Rule of 2 fails and the Sith die off cause one of them was not smart enough to cover his tracks or something then to quote Bane "they where weak and deserved to die". The rule of 2 is all about the next Sith being stronger then his master and his master before him. So each Sith is stronger then all the prior ones ideally. If the latest in the line fails then that means that the Sith order was not strong enough and was deserving of its destruction.

There is no guarantee one of the two are smarter, or both are powerful,reducing numbers is reducing chance to get quality, just like sperms, we have millions of sperms and only one is the champion, there is a greater chance to impregnate women with millions of sperms instead of just two...so by decreasing Sith number, Darth Bane actually dooming Sith into what they have become in episode 1 to 6...Sith failed because of Rule of Two, look at Revan and Malak, at their peak of power Malak betrayed Revan, giving the chance for Jedi to take advantage and destroying Malak...Vader overthrow Palpatine and then he died end the Sith forever (Knight of Ren is not The Sith)...the Sith NEVER get long term success because of Rule of Two.

While I do find these videos interesting, I agree that this one in particular felt rather redundant. It felt like he was stretching out 3 minutes of material into 7 minutes.
