Right? When he said Raytheon I just remember a shit ton of the guidance systems on our weapons came from them and we were in touch with them pretty often. Not sure if I worked with Richard, wish I woulda paid better attention.
Yes! I have had the Flanger on my board since I was gigging in high school. Now it sits right next to my Walrus Iron Horse and Phase 90, it was the only modulation I could realistically afford, and have kept it all this time. All these years later, it's got a good sound, and has made it into a few recording works I've done!
This is my new fav channel what a fun conglomeration of journalism, comedy, nerdy sarcastic electronics jokes, and of course great jam sessions!!!! Best shit out there right now for this genre.
The badge version was the second version, not the third. The badge was to cover up the “tube driver” name so they could still use the cases they already had printed.
Me too. It becomes problematic when I sing them at the grocery store, but my small town is full of weirdos, and the clerks are forgiving of public strangeness. For now.
You already have a version 1 Tube Driver! The square Tube Overdrive “badge” was placed OVER the words Tube Driver, likely as the result of an S&D letter from the other pedal company. This allowed them to use up existing stock without repainting the cases. So if you remove the foot switch, the badge should come off and you’ll have the original Tube Driver version. BOOM! Two in one makes three!
The mystery of Badge theory: They had already painted a too large or too small amount of pedals with the original name.....and changed them to the new name with a badge.(edit: sorry my comment was made before I saw the end -but you already knew and was obviously messing with us. To be honest I thought I was smart, but I fell for it. FUN EPISODE)
@@DavidRavenMoon yes former GC employee here. They took away all the TD1 stock from stores and they reappeared with the TO1 badge over them. Then the newer TO1 came around.
A few of these were stinkers though. But the good ones, damn, they're actually discouraging, like these guys can just goof around and jam out pieces that should be immortalized on vinyl. Discourages me that this level of talent, a level I'll never reach in my entire concerted life, is just throw away one offs on the ever deep web.
I had the delta labs digital delay. It was such a cool pedal on the rig. I wish there was a tap tempo and that would been a permanent pedal on my current rig.
I loved these pedals. They got me through college back then- Many an open mic night and bar gig! I missed them, so recently I found the digital multi effect unit they released. Just under $50 in mint condition and it has stereo out, headphone out and an expression pedal. WOW. It’s on my mini grab and go board w/ an Orange terror stamp. 48 presets and 48 user slots. It’s just so much fun.
Josh, two things, Nick always looks like he's playing the best jam of his life, which is great!! I love to watch you guys play. Second, your record time really surprised me!! It's really great to see King Gizzard in your collection. I would also like to give a huuuge shout out to the fact that you have COPE by Manchester Orchestra, I'm sure you have their other albums as well. They happen to be one of my favorite bands. Anyways, keep up the great work guys!! Thanks again!!
"Astral Airplane" - One of your best thus far. It's extraordinary how many songs you write between episodes. Episode ideas: DeArmond, SOVTEK, and acoustic guitar pedals.
D S it sounds like you’re waiting for its arrival. I just bought a Morning Glory recently. Wait until you hear it! You cannot make it sound bad. Best New Pedal Day ever!
What Josh said: "Then he went to work for Raytheon, an American multinational aerospace defense... WURDZ IZ HARD LOL" What Josh thought: "YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! YOU WERE SUPPOSED BUILD GUITAR PEDALS FOR MUSICIANS, NOT BOMB THEM! BRING MUSIC TO THE WORLD, NOT BURN IT TO ASHES! You were my brother, Richard! I loved you!"
I was an STM at GC when they released this line. The square badge “sticker” was done because of printer errors and and it was a quick fix (that’s what was told to the employees). And yes they had to change the name from the initial run of pedals.
The first pedal i ever modded on my own that was more than just swapping diodes, or adding a 9v adapter to a big muff was a delta lab metal overdrive. got it as a floor model on clearance for like $15 . Ive still got it but so much has been done im not sure if it still counts. now its more of a a self oscillating glitchy octave fuzz. And if you dime out all the knobs it kinda goes into ring mod territory. These gave me confidence to work on top mount electronics. Deffinatly cool as stock pedals, but also good practice to mod " modern " units, and they were sturdy enough to actually be used, unlike the other cheap pedals that are all plastic, and arent really worth the effort unless your going to rehouse them while your at it. Like i said, mine might be a far cry from its factory form, but its survived quite a bit of abuse; from the inside when i was tinkering with it, as well as being kicked, dropped, stood on , stepped on, dog/ humans peeing on and everything else that goes on as a member of a local band that plays dive bars.
@@boimesa8190 lol. Thanks... I guess... I mean... Dont thinkme some kind of pedal guru or anything. Im just guy that had a lot of time on his hands, a multimeter, and the ability to stick with a decision; even if its not a great one to begin with. There was a TON of trial and error, and id be lying if i said it ended up as something i was trying to accomplish. I really just wanted to mess around with the guts of a cheap pedal and see what i could make it do. There were even a few times i was sure that i bricked it, only to have reversed the polarity, or shorted power to the compression chip . One of the " mods" that adds the " glitching" effect( it sort of studders, goes " phase-y, loses a bit of volume and pins the gain oscillation to 11 when you hold the foot switch down) legitimately All started as me trying to fix a connection pin i snapped of the gain control and replaced with a staple and noticing the spike it caused bypassing... Idk. Something. And feeding back into the signal after the gain stage. i kinda know how it works after the fact, and i manipulated it a bit to get it to where it is. But it really just stated out as a Funky crackle with a bit of " wooosh" to it from the full sweep of the "tone circuit" chip. This was 100% just experimenting. I looked at it as a no risk, if it still works at the end of the day its a win situation. it was under $20 and was just a generic ocd distortion so at the absolute worst case scenario it would make an interesting paperweight. The whole project was really more experimental circuit bending than a pedal mod. Most of the parts used wete scrapped from the little dano pedals that id destroyed trying the same thing. Internally it looks like a 3 way cross between a rats nest, an ls swapped import tuner car, and a junk drawer of random bits of wire thst go from something to something else. I kinda want to do this with a delay pedal, just to see what happens, but ive got terrible luck with delays, you kinda have to know what your doing before you start, and i happen To like my delay pedals how they are. If i found a cheap delay that was just " meh" id go for it. But they tend to be eother great or awful, and i guess ive gotten lazy over the years.
@@boimesa8190 thanks... Maybe i will. Ive thought about doing a chanel about pedal mods, and guitar wiring tricks ive picked up along the way before. but idk... It kinda feels weird talking about a subject i really dont like FULLY understand. Kinda feels like acting like an auto mechanic because ive filled my gas tank up a few times, or changed the wipers. There are quite a few doing it, and as i stated ive gotten lazy over the years. Kinda feels like its been done to death so many other times. Ill see if i can do a quick demo of the pedal this weekend( no promises, but i will try). I dont know if i really want to show the guts, or go over EVERYTHING ive done to it. Im sure id miss something; not to mention " the experts" heads might pop seeing the work, and i dont really feel like debating " why" things were done the way they were, or having to deal with them nerding out over " better ways" to do it. Honestly i just dont care, and dont feel like humoring them. Ill put the link to the video in the comments here.
@@earlycuyler2295 Yen please! Oh and you should check out Simon the magpie & Look mum no computer on YT... They started out with low skills & knowledge 🤷♂️
Most bands suck. I mean think of the precious few who were even good enough to make it to your ears, well they represent a infintecimal fraction of the whole of all bands... and even most of those suck!
I like Josh better when he's angry. If you're reading this calm/indifferent/sedated Josh, please let jealous/envious/angry/frustrated Josh out of the box. Please! I remember those early videos... Also, maybe it's time to shine some light on some of the better BASS friendly guitar pedals! Bass centered jam?! I think it's about due time!
@@MrAwesomeSaucesome I just want to see more frequent bass forward jams. Someone give Josh a bass! Better yet, get the bassist in front of the camera and have Josh play a muted chord progression angrily on the guitar in the background.
Don’t think I didn’t notice that you skipped over the Boss Mega Distortion when comparing metal distortions. Are you too ashamed to show it off, Josh? What’s the deal, man?
“Crumbs of the Sun” (1st track) sounded so much like the band Hum. That pedal was great, very unique for a distortion pedal. If anyone knows of a good Hum like band please reply! I miss that band and they only had 2 label albums.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend a band that sounds a lot like Hum, but I do want to thank you for mentioning them. I’ve never heard of Hum. I took a listen to see if I could help out, and was blown away. I’m gonna purchase Inlets and listen tomorrow. I’ll pop back here if by chance I think of any related recommendations. Thanks again
@@TrevorLahey3 no, thank you! I didn’t know they released a new album!!! That’s awesome. I’m so glad you discovered them. Their second album (Downward is Heavenward) is by far the best sounding and mature. However, ‘You’d prefer and Astronaut’ is awesome as well. I’ll be buying Inlets too. Enjoy!
@@TrevorLahey3 you made my day!!! I just listened to the first song and it is classic Hum!!! Oh man, I’m so happy. They hadn’t released an album since the early 2000’s. Thank you!
@@michaelsnydermusic haha that’s awesome! Yea, the first track on Inlets punched my brain. Excited to dive in tomorrow. I’m glad I ended up helping after all lol
Seeing the King Gizz shoutout made me exceptionally happy, They’re the most diverse and prolific band around right now from what I can see and definitely my favourite to keep up with. Not to mention their amazing level of fan interaction/service and extremely refreshing DIY mentality toward music and the business as a whole. Everyone should check them out, They really do have an album for any listener and they seem to be a great bunch of blokes, Big up the Aussies!!
Josh's rant on his inability to locate the original version of the tube driver pedal and the badging filled my soul with joy and made me want to show it to my wife to show her that I'm not alone....but she says it doesn't matter if other people are ALSO crazy. Ah well. I'm in good company. Seriously though, why is there a square?
I could not love and enjoy your dialogue any more, than I do😎🤣 You always have me laughing and enjoying some interesting information, then comes the thick tones and great playing. Thanks Josh, for your sincere dedication to the craft! Zack Rosicka Thanks again for The Black Box🙌🤝
Seeing the Rocktek pedals made my eyes nearly pop out of my head. I still think they made the best chorus pedal of all time and space. I wish you would do a deep dive on Rocktek.
Was my first chorus pedal also. I foolishly sold it and now miss it. I'm still lucky enough to have that Arion Chorus (the OG one everyone wants) and it is similar if not just about the same.
@@OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy I didn't sell mine. It was stolen by some degen along with my Peavey Bandit 112, and my 1st guitar (a Tanara Strat copy).
@@OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy I have, but the Bandit (of course the irony isn't lost one me) had, IMO, the best distortion channel of any amp I've ever played through. As far as metal tones go anyway.
Stereo is for us headphones solo musicians who are trapped in apartments surrounded by, surprisingly quite spry and not deaf, elderly neighbors who can hear a pin drop in a thunderstorm. Besides, you program some drums, throw some echoes to the gutters, hit that pingpong delay and dunk your fuzz in some reverb and you'll never mono on your headphones, again.
Today's show was an emotional roller coaster ride of madness and redemption, social upheaval and inner calm, accompanied by a soundtrack, no a cacophony of sounds that can forever go unheard, nevermore! I laughed, I cried, I peed myself, a little.
Love these videos every week. "Infest The Rats Nest" has become one of my favorite albums in the last few months, it's a great metal record, hell just a great record. If you haven't checked out King Gizzard...do yourself a favor and listen, they are great.
Alien Defense Technology, Alien Secret Identities, and Fencing... I so gotta check out this story!!! Though I'm guessing Fencing is a form of advanced Alien Defense even to this day you can't beat the good 'ol sharp stick with a point at the end Technology for Advanced Alien Self-Defense Capabilities!!! BTW: How do you feel about Fuzzrocious Pedals based out of New Jersey? I would recommend The Moth and they also offer to Hand Paint Them too if you buy them direct!!!
Wow !!! Great Vid on The D Labs Pedals... And That Original Power Supply I Just Gotta Find One... Lol .. Love The Chorus, Phaser and Flanger.. And The Distortion Units Aren't Too Shabby I Must Say ... And Great Jams Guys and Thanx for The Upload ☺☺😎👊💯 (And That Square.. Lmmfaoo.. I'm Done 😉☺😎 )
The TD-1 with the badge IS the tube driver. If you remove the badge it’s right under the lable. I bought two at a Guitar Center on clearance. The guy working there said they had a lawsuit and had to put the labels on and sell them off. Now you know. Edit: and this is why I usually don’t comment until a video is over. Thank you future Josh for solving the mystery.
Awesome! I really like these pedals! I have the TO1 and the DD1 and they are pretty rare here in Brazil. I bought them in 2010 at a Guitar Center store in Florida. This duo, Tube Overdrive and Digital Delay, became my daily equipment for guitar lessons. Great video! best regards from Sao Paulo/Brazil. Ps.: My TO1 doesn't have the square shield 😂🤣
2045. Guitar center picks up the JHS expired patent name and make THAT their budget line. Josh takes a break from being the president of the USA to make a video.
Raytheon CK722. Look it up. First consumer transistor. I found 46 ck722's among a good 50 lbs of vintage electronic parts in Columbus by the Defense center. Every week a guy who was a retired engineer there put boxes of stuff out. ck722's make mediocre fuzz pedals, but out of the 46 I tested two with gain way high and it worked...eh' average. I scored lots of Bumblebee caps, Clarion and AB pots., etc.
