WHY DEVIN TOWNSEND HATES VIDEOGAMES 

I live for video games and music. To each their own, but video games are my art as much as music is

I am a video game enthusiast, but the older i get the less time I can fit them in because I'm either too busy or going out in my spare time

I respect Devin and we all have our things we just cant get into I thought this about Breaking Bad for years, never gave a shit. Until when I started watching it and am convinced its one of the greatest series to exist that weren't tainted by modern niches and predictability.

It depends on you really. A lot of people would say the same thing about playing guitar though - "learning scales positions and modes then doing it repeatedly until you internalise it?.. just sounds like work" .. "The only interesting part is shredding" The key is understanding each statement is opinion and not fact, gaming is not work and nor is guitar playing. But if you don't enjoy something personally of course it will seem like work to you only.

"Video games are work." Oh that's so true. I'm going to explain it to my friends this way. Also, seeing people freak out while playing video games. That doesn't look like they're enjoying themselves. I enjoy when someone else records all cool movie parts while they go through the game so I can just get an interesting story pieced together.

I feel Devin on Breaking Bad. I’m from New Mexico and people freak out when I tell them I’ve never watched an episode of that goddamn show. I just don’t care to watch it.

I love you for this. i understand. People don't have to subscribe to all the things. Some people don't play games, some don't do film or television, and some don't do music...it's weird to me, but it is reality.

That’s why I like the simple retro games , I don’t care about graphics or downloading 40gb to play a game. Doom 1 , quake 1 , Diablo 1 , still play them til this day

I'm a huge gamer, but some folk just aren't and that's fine. Too many people are insecure about their own views, so they HAVE to have everyone like the same things or they feel invalidated. You can spot them becasue they use "best" instead of "favourite".

Exactly how I felt when I first played Skyrim. I come back home having spent the entire day sorting out requests at work only to spend the entire night sorting out requests in a game. Dafuq

Imagine how tiring the modern AAA Open World games formula is, that a dude like Devin who never actually plays/gets into videogames feels like most of what RDR2 gives you are just glorified virtual chores! Bet he'd like other type of stuff more focused on actually playing a game, no diss to RDR2, I liked playing it but it can feel like that specially if you've played enough open world games.

I guess he's right in a way, but I enjoy games and films like I enjoy music. It's art, and it's great to lose yourself in it, whether it's music or running around some fantasy landscape

Some video games are work for sure. Others have great stories and are fun to play, or have puzzles that you have to figure out. That's fun to me. Not sure what kind of stories he's interested in, but there's probably a game that encapsulates whatever it is. But then it takes "work" to finish them, haha! So I get it. Just not his cup of tea. In terms of movies and shows, I also get what he's saying. Watching depressing, dark, horrific shows or movies is only interesting if your life doesn't include crappy stuff you have to endure day after day. Not sayin' his life is like that, but a lot of us deal with dark things all the time. After the pandemic, I kinda lost a little bit of my taste for certain horror and dark dramas. Now I try to keep a fine balance between funny shows that I watch and serious shows. But it seems like funny stuff is kinda hard to come by these days and is overshadowed by the dark and serious stuff.

I think the first video game i played was in 1977 lol and im still playing to this day, just started NG+8 in Elden Ring! Gaming is one of the few things i love as much if not more than playing guitar. Also if Devin thought Red Dead 2 was work then he should never step to a From title, he will feel as if he where enslaved!

I get where he's coming from, I love video games but as I get older the only games I play are things I can jump into really quick or something I can beat over a weekend or two massive games like Red Dead 2 are hard for me to even pick up because I know they'll take a tonnn of hours

I feel what hes saying completely. I used to enjoy video games, but he's right about them being too much work now. The Wire is the greatest tv drama of all time, but you certainly have to pay attention. It's not background noise. It took me a couple of viewings where I would pause and playback scenes repeatedly until I was concetrating enough to understand it.

A gamer once argued with me that guitar hero was more difficult than playing a real guitar. You have 5 f...king buttons.

It sounds like he might be overworked. He seems like an extremely busy guy, and he's been putting out music at an insane rate for over 30 years. I feel the same way after spending the whole day studying and doing college work. I just don't have the energy to get invested in story-focused single-player games most of the time, or starting watching series I know I would enjoy. Instead, I just pop on COD for some mindless entertainment. Great games/shows require some work to get invested in, and that's not a bad thing, but sometimes you just don't have the energy for it.

I´d love to see Devin getting bored and eventually pissed playing Sim City/Stardew Valley/ etc...

He's right though. It's this whole contemporary AAA gaming thing - sensory overload, complicated to navigate but boring gameplay, and mostly cringy/tasteless. You look at it and feel like, no man, put that away, that feels tedious to deal with.

I totally agree with his vision, yet I'm a huge videogame nerd, I know it must be tiring to hear over and over again but I really think he hasn't tried the right ones lmao. There are a lot of games that go against this very systemic design that feels like work. Journey is a very good example, I think he'd probably like The Witness as well

From the outside looking in, video games could seem like work, but they're fun because they're so good at getting you into a flow state that the feeling of "work" disappears quickly. Playing guitar can feel like work too. Anything can. But flow state happens when you get the right balance of work, progress, and enjoyment happening, and once it does, you just get into this zen-like place where everything else disappears and all you're left with is the feeling that you're Really Good at Getting This Stuff Done so you better go do it, because Getting Stuff Done feels good, because you're good at it. Throwing the entire concept of games away because from the outside they look like they might feel like work kind of misses the point and is actually pretty unfair. :)

Although incredible musical talent is NOT something I have in common with Devin, at least we share a hatred of video games!

I feel like Devin would probably prefer VR, because instead of having to remember which numerous buttons to press to do something seemingly so simple, you can probably just physically do it in VR(depending on the game ofc). It makes the learning side of things a lot quicker and allows you to jump almost straight into the fun.

I love video games but I hate it when they require shit ton of work just get specific weapon, there some weapons which turned out to be useless and you did this long side quest just to get it and you thought all this time wasted for a shit weapon

Put down the controller and pick up an instrument/paint brush/pencil whatever and make art! Or make your own video game!

Agree 100 percent. Music and martial arts are for me. No hating on people who enjoy and have fun but I just like things that are fun but also give me greater fulfillment.

He' obviously over stimulated easily. I mainly use games to relax.
