Why did John treat Uncle so bad in RDR1?

After RDR2 I had a complete different picture of Uncle - I mean he still was old and lazy but I somehow felt sorry for him especially after what the Indians did to him...

I imagine when they wrote RDR1, their image of the Van Der Linde gang was much less cuddly. Here in the original you get the impression Uncle was something of a mean drunk who maybe treated John and others with “tough love”, and only now in his old age has softened and become more passive. This doesn’t really align with the Uncle we see in RDR2, who’s more of a cheeky booze hound that’s irresponsible but well meaning.

Yeah, it's pretty clear in RDR1 that the Van der Linde Gang was much colder to one another, and probably not as small. In the original game 22 outlaws died in blackwater, suggesting the gang was more like the gangs you can meet in both games. John was probably just a senior member or a bigger shot. In RDR1 canon it was also that heist he got left behind in.

My own theory is since John put Uncle in charge of the ranch before the prologue of RDR1, and by the time you’re able to explore West Elizabeth, he noticed Uncle or the cattle weren’t anywhere nearby, and felt even more disgruntled with his current state of affairs, which is probably why he considers him worthless by the time of the mission “The outlaws return”.

Tbf Uncle has terminal lumbago and as RDR2 establishes, it's a lot of hard work keeping the ranch running at all. Uncle on his own was never going to keep the place together, but John had no other options.

I think their relationship is a bit complex. They are used to talking crap to each other, but John tolerates Uncle enough to have him stay at the ranch and Uncle can tolerate John and stick around and help out when he can. Of course, John does get frustrated with Uncle when he doesn’t keep up with his responsibilities.

John explains during missable dialogue with Uncle that the reason he’s angry with him is due to the ranch falling apart while he was away. John entrusted Uncle to watch over the ranch, so when he learned the old man let their chicken get eaten and rustlers steal the cattle, it set him off. Uncle: Don’t take it out on me. You’ve been full of piss and vinegar ever since you got back. John: My wife and child were kidnapped. And I was made to kill god knows how many men for a government I can’t stand. All while you ran my ranch into the ground. Sorry if I ain’t showering you with kindness.

This is actually a genius piece of writing right here. John seems to be spiteful of Uncle, like he is holding something in him. In RDR2 epilogue, however, Uncle was not only acting smarter than Marston but also was picking at him whenever he could.
