I have read that natural shedding happens when one stops Minoxidil. So that in conjunction with your natural Hair Growth Cycle could be the culprit . You might have happened upon the perfect storm of bad timing with more of your hairs shedding at the same time than usual--your natural rate PLUS the Minoxidil rate. Another reason could be fluctuation in Male Sex Hormones....dropping testosterone. Stress. Diet. There are MANY factors that could have played into your diminished gains.

Likely that your major shed came naturally as a function of minoxidil. In short, minoxidil's MOA (mechanism of action) is to increase blood flow (vasodilation) which, although it certainly promotes new growth, will force even non-minoxidil dependent hairs into a premature resting phase (telogen). 7 months is a fairly delayed shed, although it's likely this was a slow, cumulative process that, much like head balding, is only really noticeable once ~50% of the hair was lost. As to the "first second beard" idea, there's credence to this: If you've kept a buzzcut for ages and then try to grow it out, it will look thinner compared to someone had kept that hairstyle for some time. Reason being that hairs approaching and in the resting phase (telogen) will experience slowed (catagen) & stopped growth (telogen). So, there will be those hairs that stopped at the length of the long-kept buzzcut, while the rest are growing. Whereas, for the person who has kept that longer hairstyle, the telogen phase hairs will be already at that desired, longer length. Similarly, a beard long-kept at that desired, longer length will be fuller and more "stable," as by the time taken for the those telogen hairs are ready to fall out (exogen), there's been much progress made by new hairs that then replace the length of those stalled telogen hairs. In summation, the rate of replacement for hairs is more advantageous when one is maintaining at a given length, rather than growing, so a "first beard" will, indeed, be thinner and less stable than a long-kept beard. Largely why regular trims are important! Shape is primary reason, density (this subject) is secondary, and reducing odds of split ends is tertiary, IMO. Trimming effectively diminishes and evens out disparities in rate of growth/ rate of replacement between hairs in anagen (growth), catagen (regression), telogen (resting) and exogen (shedding) phases. Keep up the great work, Harry! Love the content.

Wash and condition your beard a couple times a week. Use beard oil everyday after you shower. Comb your beard after you put the oil in. Rub the oil on to your skin so it helps keep it soft. If your skin under your beard is dry, and the hairs are dry, they will break off. When your beard starts to look all different lengths give it a little trim to even it back out, and bring back the full, thick look. This is my routine and never fails

Hey my friend! Beard is looking fantastic. I think it’s just the simple situation of transparency from the hairs growing at different speeds. Every individual hair on your body has it’s own unique growth rate and each hair goes through it’s growth cycle for different lengths of time. Generally speaking the chin region of your facial hair grows the fastest and longest. The more north or south you go from there, the slower and short the hairs grow. Cheeks and neck normally grow the slowest. Every beard goes through it! I do a transparency trim for those over achievers every 4-6 months. Congrats on the Beardbrand affiliate. Fantastic products and even better ownership.

My beard is the same texture as yours Harry…. Except mine is pure white! I’m 66. It has taken me years of trial and error to get it the way I want it. I keep the sides near my ears really quite short, almost long stubble. The rest of it is really quite thick and I give it a regular very slight trim to stop it looking straggly. The other day a young guy in the street shouted ‘How do I get a beard like yours bro?’ It made an old man’s day.

This is a great video man. Beards are a funny old beast, and everyone’s is different, which is what I love about them. However, this means that everyone’s beard will have its own “terminal” length, and to make it even harder, different parts of your beard will reach their terminal length at different times, and seemingly stop growing for no reason. My advice would be find the length that your beard looks the fullest, and rock the hell out of it
@andresvivas2814
@andresvivas2814 2 года назад
Yeah, Greg is right, every beard has a terminal point, and together with the fact that a lot of your haired got into natural shedding process definately caused the apparent thinning of your beard, but hey!!. Do not worry, keep it that lenght a couple of months and you will see your magnificent beard again!!!

like the videos, here’s my take. Beards grow at different rates trimming is important for density. Dry climates are the worst on beards so keep is hydrated. Lastly, don’t over brush. Whenever I catch myself being critical of my beard I realize I am paying to much attention to it and maybe overdoing the styling to try and get it to look good. Less touching is problem best.

So first time I grew a long beard, I did everything. Proper shampoo, conditioner, beard oil, combing it to "train" it. And it was thick and wonderful and tons of compliments. I shave during the summer, second go around, being this last winter. I did none of that. Basic cleaning after work bit just using regular shampoo, and conditioner, no bears oil, kind of combing it but not really. And I got the same thing as you. Looked thinner in some area while thicker in others. And I like you have a curly thick course beard. I guess if we want a perfect beard it will require all the proper work and proper products

Hairs grown by Minoxidil tend to fall out if they haven't turned terminal before you stop taking the medication. You are also older now and beards thicken up as you age. I can see it on mine. Minor improvements over the months. Small, but noticable over time. Very possible that those hairs that fell off when stopping minox grew on their own by now. By the way, you should absolutely get that beard trimmed in a Beardbrand video!

Your beard looks fine, I tried monoxidil and it didn't really do anything. So I just grow my natural beard, it's not as thick as I would like it, but it is a beard, got to ignore vanity that exists in the mind. I just trim a little, to keep the form I like, because you will end up having uneven hairs, so just trim it on a regular basis.
@thedoc22
@thedoc22 2 года назад
When stopping minoxidil that will cause shedding. Think some of your hair reached its terminal length and other parts continued to grow thus gave it the patchy appearance. I have the same issue, super thick beard, gets to a point and looks worse because some hairs under my jaw just can’t grow that long and it’s not as densely populated, so at a shorter length that isn’t noticeable to a point. I’ve found from having very big and small beard, a shorter beard is much more appropriate for my beard capabilities

I haven't watched the whole video yet as am at work but Harry, I'd say you never needed Minoxidil to begin with. Us bald guys can usually grow badass beards with all that DHT. I didn't discover I could grow one until I was 27. Before that always had a short goatee. Was so surprised when I left it for a month and it grew like wildfire. Remember those first month's where I just didn't touch it or trim at all because I thought it was supposed to be that huge and wild. Nowadays I trim it down to about 11mm as I find too long makes my face longer. I love having a beard and without it I would genuinely never leave the house. Hair? Don't care if it's gone. Beard? I need it haha. Makeup for us men.

Also, beard loss can happen when you get dandruff in your beard, or those itchy patches wash your beard 2 times a weak with an over the counter anti dandruff shampoo. I use the 2 in 1 to swave it has to have zinc. With any hair growth, you got to make sure the skin is healthy underneath. Make shure that you follow up with a non scented beard conditioner leave in for 2 min, after the shower towel dry pat the hair's not rub like a crazy man , oil your beard use a cold press comb to distribute the oils then blow dry with the comb and finish with a boar bristle and a horse hair brush and add beard balm. Optional step if you have a heated beard comb/brush after you olied your beard and dried it run the heated comb throughout the beard hair in sections whilst symontanolsly using the boar brush. Finish off with the horse hair to get any stray hair's down and use the balm to finish off. Balm is optional; I find that the pomades curl my beard, so I don't use the stuff.

I remember when I discovered your channel, it was at the stage where you were making videos in China and you had your epic long beard, it's a look that suits you. In fact, you inspired me to wear a beard. I think minoxidil helped you in the past, but be patient, I'm sure you can get it back without using any drugs. I personally use special beard shampoo and oil from time to time. Mine is also curly and loses hair, but it stays. Every two or three months I go to the barber to have it trimmed, he trims the neck part more and the chin part very little, so it gives the visual effect that it is longer

Likely just genetics, the longer the beard gets the more forces start acting on it from brushing and just daily movement. If your genetics make you have weakly terminal hairs (easily pulled out) they're going to start getting pulled out more and more the longer your beard gets. You might not notice it at first since your hair is curly and holds on to those fallen out hairs until they're actively brushed out. When my beard is short in have no hair retention issues, when it's longer I can pluck out hairs just with the force of running my fingers through it.

I discovered a few months ago that I was afflicted with Alopecea Areata Barbae. Large patches in my beard that were either baby skin smooth or covered in thin white hair. I ended up having to clean shave the whole thing off as I looked like an inverted dalmatian. Even then it was very obvious as the very hair follicles are dead or without pigment. Thankfully the patches are starting to sprout pigmented hair and my regrown beard mostly hides the condition. It sounds dramatic, but a beard becomes part of your identity, even more so I would imagine if you are bald. It was actually this condition that resulted in RU-vid feeding me this channel. Stress was the underlying cause.
@vociferonheraldofthewinter2284
If you have another flare up of the alopecia, look into the carnivore diet. Five years ago I was terminal with scleroderma and told that, based on how far gone I was, I probably had about two years to live. After three months on carnivore, the autoimmune disease went into complete remission. I'm now three years past my expiration date and I'm not dying any time soon unless I get hit by a bus. ;-) There are so many stories like mine. Carnivore is the only thing I've found after years of searching that puts a dent in immune disorders. Skin conditions, Crone's, autoimmune pancreatitis, type one diabetes (and type two), rheumatoid arthritis, and on and on. Unrelated, but my mother's macular degeneration reversed. Her eye doctor wanted to write a study on her. He'd been monitoring her disease progression for a full decade and said he'd never seen it reverse in his entire career. Her secret was carnivore with six - 10 raw egg yolks (blended with cream) every morning for breakfast. There's a researcher doing a long term study in keto and carnivore for Alzheimer's disease and dimentia. He's actually got patients with new growth of the hypothalamus. He says the diets work, but the symptoms pick right up if people go back to eating normally. If it didn't reverse alopecia, it might stop the progression. Just FYI so if it happens again, you've got some ammo to use right out of the gate. Good luck to you.

Possible catalyst for beard thinning/ too much falling off: 1.water. its rigidity, the amount of chlorine, various metals in it. 2. vitamins. Lack of it or overabundance 3. skin problems 4. bad shampoo. 5. Stress Now, little bit of sharing experience: how I, being bald as hell and bearded as kratos, solving(I guess) this issues: 1.after taking a bath / shower, I rinse my beard with filtered water. 2. i try to follow my diet/ healthy lifestyle, taking supplements and sometimes vitamin complexes (you need to be careful with this) 3. beard oil and / or balm 4. i use 2 shampoos, yves rocher reparation and ducray anaphase +, about 4/5 days a week yves rocher and 1/2 times- ducray. Of course, it’s important to find that kind of shampoo, which suits exactly you and your beard. 5. Beer helps me, but beer is harmful and I will not advise it. despite all the efforts that I make to look more or less better than a piece of crap, some hair from beard still falling out (but in a very small amounts) Trichologists say this is normal and hair has its own cycle of growth / loss. Or maybe I'm doing everything wrong. I’m 27 years old btw

I've been hearing good things about saw palmetto, and rosemary blocking DHT, but always ask your dermatologist and Dr before trying any natural remedies. Saw Palmetto was used by native Americans to promote hair growth and deal with hair loss.

I get the same problem when I don't trim the front of my beard. For me, because the underneath curls under like yours, it doesn't reach the same visible length as the hair on the chin therefore making the chin hair seem thinner as it grows straighter. So basiclly I have to allow the curly hair under my chin/jaw to grow longer than the straighter hair on the chin to give the fuller look. If that makes any sense...

I never used Monoxidil. But several guys that I talked to who had good results from using it, they all say that you have to use it consistently for at least an entire year. Then taper off to avoid the shedding
@PandorasFolly
@PandorasFolly 2 года назад
Before I grew out my moustache and goatee on two occasions of 6 and 4 months i used minoxidil. I was at the far end of the positive results that can be expected and the hair on my head grew back. I did notice at the end that my beard stubble was fuller than it used to be, but the new growth was much finer than the rest. I later read this does happen with minoxidil use for people who have a high level of response to the drug and amongst those using minoxidil to grow a beard is basically what they hope to achive by the end of the first year. And if you stop using minoxidil all the hair eventually does fall back out. So that fine hair would fall out in about 2 months. And that filler hair especially on someone with a strong beard would definitely make an impact on its appearance as visual filler being supported by the main natural hairs. Unfortunately i had to stop using it because it gave me heart palpitations. Another possible side effect.

I grew my first beard in 2001 when I turned 31. After that, I had versions of chin hair and short beards until 2013. I grew a long beard that I kept for a couple of years and then went from short to medium beards until 2021. I've gone from extended goatees to goatees for several months. I do not like beards anymore and I like a tight goatee now with smooth cheeks. I'm a baldy too. It's like shoes as you get older, feel over style.

I can give my own experiences with similar beard, although i do straighten mine with heat (Blow dryer, Aberlite brush etc) -Washing-For me the biggest thing that shredded my beard was just harsh shampoo and conditioners (condition only every other) too often, but any of the good lower 5-6ph beard washes work well every day, its just finding the gentlest ones. We have some good brands in US but not sure for UK what fits besides probably Baby Shampoo but its not exactly the best just won't damage things like harsher washes can. There probably are lower PH Beard washes but you would have to look. If you aren't sure about the PH then 1 or 2 times a week washing max is a good idea instead of daily, i believe Beard Brand is good but falls under more a stripping wash so too often may not be good. -Combing typically too much does more harm then good. Some combing can be good, get dead skin cells off but overdoing it has its cost and all about moderation. I find combing before using any product on damp beard in shower, basically start of my shower, is best time to get dandruff away and keep the beard from ever itching later. Not with or after shampoo but before anything goes in, i prefer a pick (Chicago combs) for this out of anything else i've tried, some use larger combs with success though. -Cold Rinse this goes for anything that keeps your skin happy essentially, but a easy one is cold rinse at end of shower, even if its literally just 5 seconds makes a huge difference. -Outdoor Temps- can change feel (wavyness, namely due to humidity) but hot or cold is both fine, UVs are only bad part, but it WILL grow thicker the more physically active you are, so if you were chilling in the hot regions where before you were keeping warm and hustling that may have made some difference. -Diet-Finally as always Biotin and Collagen are never bad, but like everything don't overdo them, just make sure its in your diet.

Unrefined-cold pressed-virgin-coconut oil. It is a carrier oil so it feeds your beard all day, anti fungal, and works as a light wax. All in one for 9$. Most importantly is washing your beard/face everyday in the shower and brushing beard with a boar bristle brush to exfoliate the skin. I reccomend Garnier Whole Blend coconut shampoo for your head and beard.

I cannot comment on Minoxidil, but, I too have a curly and messy looking beard ( much to the wifes displeasure,) and it really does grow at different speeds. Being somewhat older aswell there is a bit of grey in there which seems to be the fastest growing of them all. To keep it looking relatively tidy takes quite a bit of grooming and as such it has taken alot longer to grow to a decent length all over. Patience is important if you want a longish beard without looking like a hobo, well thats true for me anyhow on my curly beard journey.

I am bald and bearded just like you are, same situation with hair loss at age of 16 or 17. It does not matter what did you use to make all the beard brow and all that, it's pre-shape just like the head. If you shave all your hair on your head and then let it grow for 5 months! It would look worse than the beard does, even if you keep it clean and use oils and take care of it, it's all uneven, not hsaped and have to cut shape the beard, let all the hair be kind of the same length and shaping it.

So I use the "big three" to help from hair loss. Minoxidil (rogaine) finasteride -pill, and a ketocontazole shampoo. The thing with Rogaine and why most men stop using it; is as you start, for the first 6 months you are going to experience shedding. I would do my hair in the morning and literally have 30+ hairs in the sink. Scary! But after the initial 6 months, you will start to regrow some hair. However, the thing with minoxidil is if you stop, you will go back into your natural hair loss. It won't continue growing if you stop. I'm assuming your beard "died" due to stopping usage

I had the same thing... Think it had to do with not washing enough under the chin. All my under beard started shedding. I then got itchy and it would not stop till I finally decided to just shave it completely. My Beard is back. Wash the shit out of it. Beard care is real. I thought just showering it and and shampooing it every 2-3 weeks was fine.

Big beards just take time. The rate that your hairs grow is all different. Overwashing and conditioning just makes you lose more thickness each time. Honestly I wash my beard once a week with a very mild shampoo (nothing harsh), otherwise its just a rinse each day and I very gently comb it (while its wet) rather than brush it. If you continue this over time it will grow full and as thick as your genetics will allow. I dont use any products at all unless I have to dress up. My beard is not curly however like yours but wavy and straight so it mostly falls into place but everybody has bad hair (or beard) days.

Ir you use Minox, you have yo use It from 1.5 to 2 years, so your hairs become terminal, they have to go troughout shedding to become terminal, each (new) hair has to go trough that phase, your previous terminal hairs (the beard that you already had, they don't need to go trough that phase), so, maybe you need to use minoxidil for another year 🤷🏻‍♂️

I shaved it all off and said "I'll never be able to just have a beard". I decided about a year/year and a half later to give it another go, and I feel like I have a beautiful beard going. I got a small patch on each cheek (the reason I started using the Moxi crap) but with length, it's filling in/covering up and it's my natural beard that I'm rocking and have actually got compliments on from time to time. Point of my story is, rock what you got with pride and screw the haters!! You do you.

Hair looks good on you man i told you. Also that wishy wash beard is the result of letting it grow back to back. Go to an iraqi beard hairsallon. Go once a month and they will make it equal. Some hairs on beard grow faster on our face. And to make m even u need to get the trimmer. But only trim after it has become really big. Thats a good checkpoint to continue on
