This dude made me DIE of laughter as a kid and when I got older I turned around and hated on him like he hadn't just made me crack up for a hour straight a couple years before. Im sorry Dane you seem like a real chill dude.
Dane Cook was treated like the Nickel Back of comedians. We were all jamming to Rockstar and laughing at the BK Lounge. Stop being embarrassed and just enjoy it
I never understood the hatred for Dane Cook or Nickelback. Dane is a legitimately funny dude. People got all bent because of the way he dressed and his snarky delivery? That was his shtick man. They just didn't get it. And Nickelback was a legitimate rock band. How many hits did they have? How many bands did they influence with their sound? A lot. Thats impressive for any band and that shit still holds up today. I just don't get the hate.
"Magicians are a comedians arch nemesis." So true. Christopher Nolan's 'Prestige,' spoke to this directly. After the antagonists' magic show went horribly wrong, the theater owner said "its over, I've already booked a comedian and you KNOW how much I hate comedians." Comedians are able to make true and funny, real life observations; which can give the audience a wider, more appreciative view of life. While magicians shift and block your view so they can manipulate you into believing a lie to be real. Great real life observation from Theo Vaughn!! 👏👏
@@ilovebutterstuff That was one of the in flight movies for our Company on the flight back to Ft. Drum, NY, from training in Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Love that movie and was pleased to hear that a lot of the guys had never seen it and ended up loving it and talking about it at the smoke pit back at the barracks. Freaking David Bowie as Tesla!
Hmm, I'd say they're equals. Both caught stealing jokes, both can approach five minutes on stage without saying anything funny. Both flaunt the enormous chip on their shoulder.
My wife and I ran into Dane outside of a comedy club in Boston. He was there with his parents and we hung out and chatted for 1520 minutes. It was the nicest celebrity I've ever met in my entire life
Dane Cook was hated because he got too big, too fast. No one hated him, then suddenly everyone did. It happens in all forms of entertainment. And the bigger you are, the easier a target you become because you’re so mainstream. It eventually becomes “cool” to hate what used to be cool.
Never having heard of him, before I saw him on a big stage on youtube, I can honestly say that I simply didn't find him funny. He has the energy of a comedian, but somehow the actual meat on his jokes/punchlines is missing. So I was just puzzled as to how someone like that could make it so big.
Like Nickelback. Lol Imo it's because he portrayed an alpha male in a world where soy boys were starting to flood the internet. In a way it seems like he might've been the first casualty of the emerging cancel culture.
It's called mass psychosis, people have a herd mentality, but worste of all when they all start hating, they hate to just hate and will attack anyone. Look at the v*ccine sh*t, people getting attacked over a 99 percent survival rate virus. Lol people are idiots, never base anything off of public opinion
@@DrMattPDO you might be too young to understand how popular he was in the mid 2000s for college kids. Can't look at it through the lens of today, that double album was massive.
I think he had trouble shaking that "snarky frat guy" vibe that he gave off. He was legitimately funny, but the way he carried himself, the way he dressed, maybe made people think he was too big for his britches. I think he'd have a great career in comedy if he steered a little more towards that sensitive, thought-provoking guy that he is in real life. When comics are themselves, you really can't go wrong.
@@danny4081 Maybe I worded it weird, but I mean to say I liked the snarky frat guy, but I would also like to see him be Dane Cook. The snarky frat guy wasn't Dane Cook. So I'm saying as his career goes on I'd like to see him do more down to earth stuff I guess.
@@MalleusIudaeorum True, but a lot of comics go that route when they haven't honed their craft. I'm sure he's learned from that, but I haven't seen anything he's done since like 2007.
Dane Cook jokes were the thing that connected me and my best friend for the first time. We met in high school and mentioned we liked Dane Cook and would non-stop quote his jokes. She was the best friend I ever had. She has since passed away but our high school humour will be stuck in my head forever. 💜
Blatant joke theft is why he was blackballed and Theo and fans dance around it and say stuff like "he was young, energetic, good looking" insinuating the people who dislike him were just jealous
@@jimmy2thymes916 You said "none of the softball crap" and I was addressing that... Tho didn't bring up the known allegations of joke theft that led to Dane Cook's downfall?! He instead danced around the issue and played along with Dane's conceited take that he was young and sooo famous and that people just hate Dane because they are jealous or because it's popular to hate him. Just No🤦♀️... people don't like that Dane stole multiple people's jokes, one even from Louis CK... has nothing to do with his popularity. I love Theo but he was giving softball questions on this one
And as a result Plastic Surgeons stopped teaching the Ray Liotta, word has it that aspiring medical students will sneak into the cadaver room at night and practice the procedure on a cadaver as if it's Forbidden Magic.
My theory: comedy is traditionally self deprecating, lack of confidence and awkwardness. Dane came out as a young, energetic good looking comic with confidence that didn’t fit the “traditional” mold. So naturally anyone that said they liked Dane (his fans) got sh*t for liking that type of comedy.
The issue is that if someone is traditionally attractive then they benefit from the Halo Effect. The less attractive someone is, the easier it is to get negative feedback and harder it is to get positive feedback, which is critical in comedy. Comedians go across the country testing their material and delivery. If the audience is forgiving then they're never able to refine their material. To the general public they seem hilarious due to our cognitive biases, but comedians see right through it and resent them for essentially using a cheat code. You may be familiar with this, but nearly every time I hear a straight woman tell me who they think is a really funny guy that they know, its always a tall guy with good genes who makes lame, run of the mill jokes. Not to pick on anyone though, I know I listen more and find attractive women "more interesting" because my caveman brain is releasing dopamine.
Two things that killed Dane cook: 1. Ironically, the fact he really was self made, he did everything himself, did it with the INTERNET, which had NEVER been heard of before. A looooot of other celebrities around the comedy scene didn't like that. 2. He got too big too fast. Those old expressions like "the candle that burns brightest burns shortest" have some truth to them. We see it on RU-vid every day now actually. The videos that go from 0 to 100,000,000 views in a day never translate into real long term fans. Think Gangnam style. 3. And this was by far and away the killshot to his careers fucking jugular: HE STOLE FROM LOUIS CK. There's only like 3 comedians in human history who you could be stupider to steal from: Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, and then I'd say seated comfortably at the number 4 spot of people you should never steal from, oh look! It's Louis CK
I think that's a great point. He also made a lot of weird faces and noises. And someone with literally infinite confidence is probably psychopathic is probably
I felt that way, I remember hating him just cause he sold arenas of Christian’s and didn’t have rated r jokes, and his energy was annoying. But dude I was a hater, and young & dumb . At my age now, if it makes you money, you pay your mortgage and live life, shit man I want that to.
Dane Cook was born from the first gay sex in 1954. He emerged from the river of blood running from Will Ferell's anal tearing whilst Norm MacDonald was eating a sandwich, for the stamina.
On road trips, when everyone in the car falls asleep, I will always put on his CD's to keep me awake. It's impossible to fall asleep when you are laughing that hard. Dane Cook will always be one of my all-time favorite stand-up comedians. Harmful, Retaliation, Rough Around & Isolated...chef's kiss.
This man was ahead of his time. Not saying he did things comics never done before but the speed in which he grew in popularity was untouchable compared to everyone else. Everyone had this man's cd back in the early 2000s. BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA took off.
It was before Twitter and such, but MySpace was definitely social media, and it helped propel him to the stratosphere man. That’s where I first heard of him, and we grew up like 3 towns away from him. Dane is such a weird, weird case study man. The exact thing that made him famous as a comic, his style of joke telling, is the exact thing that brought him down. The yelling, and in your face style is why ppl loved him, but it’s the exact reason they gave for hating him like a year later. So weird.
Never had the guy CD thought he was completely unfunny every time I saw him. His comedy always seemed forced. And that's just to me in my own personal opinion.
I'll never forget seeing Dane for the first time. I was like 10 years old, flipping channels, and I came across his first special on TV. I remember that I had literally never laughed harder in my entire life... I genuinely could not breathe for 10 second stretches. My parents called to check up on me, and I answered during one of those fits; they thought I was sick or something. I always liked him, never really got the hate. Glad he's sharing his perspective and being received well these days
Theo does a genuinely exceptional job interviewing in this. This is a side of Dane Cook i haven't seen in other interviews. Really great questions and conversation all around.
Always loved his comedy, and always wondered where he went. He's right, most fans don't really go out of the way to compliment, at least not as much as someone who hates you will go out of there way to defame you. Fans just enjoy the content and keep moving unless you're a super fan or something. Haters will hate everytime they see you in the news
I was a Dane hater because he was the first comic to use the internet to build his fan base. I felt like he cheated and didn’t earn it. As a more mature and wiser human I can admit I was 100% wrong about that.
@@andrewstableford9781 Oh yeah I've caught my self hating on folks unnecessarily over the years. Less and less as I mature though and I can look back and appreciate content that used to annoy me.
I can’t even tell you how many of his jokes I still re-tell or refer to. “I did my best! I did my best”, “why do I have so many keys? Did I murder a janitor?, “ I wants some treats”, and so many more… Thank you Dane! I love your humor!!
I dropped my daughter off at college and went back and cried hysterically in my car and moved the rear view mirror to watch myself cry 😂😂😭 Totally thought of this.
For whatever the reason, the thing that keeps resurfacing for me is his car alarm bit. "Seeeeeatbelts... Radio knoooobs, hel-LOOOOOOOOO, I'm a CAAAAAAAARRRRRR.... GAS-O-LINE-MAKES-ME-GO"....
Giggly Bits I think the painting is of Theo, not Farley. That Chris in the bottom right is in the spot where the artist signs the painting. The artists name is Chris.
Meme culture as funny as it can be sometimes is in reality the fastest way to take one persons views and make it everyone else’s. Social programming at its best
He was the first comic to ever make me bust a gut with laughter. Got me through the teenage years. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'll always be a fan of his and grateful to his comedy.
His step brother stole millions from him and his parents died in 2006-2007. Then just being hated in the comedy world. That would change any guys face. #danecookneedsahug
In my black household, we LOVED Dane Cook. Thanks to my cousin for introducing us to his comedy. I can’t express how many times a day we watched Vicious circle. I even remember going on a road trip with my ex and her mom and we listened to it the whole way there in the car lol. Nothing but love for him.
In my household, every time he'd be on t.v., I'd yell to mamma to put down the hot comb and come watch. N we'd sit around, laugh our asses off and enjoy the neck bones.
@@doyourownresearch7297 its the context behind it. not many black people listen or watch white comedians but hes saying that this white comedian reached him and his family. nothing more nothing less. stop reading into it.
If he gains twenty pounds he looks exactly like Farley in the cartoon picture in between him and Dane! I only saw almost all of Danens shows ...I thought he was ok . I definitely don't believe he deserve to hate that he got but oh well he don't seem to mind!
I never really understood all the Dane Cook hate. He had a really good run of being funny as hell. His jokes were definitely geared towards a specific audience and it was more about how animated he was and how vividly he could paint the picture of these absurd scenarios that he would come up with. It wasn't traditional stand up which probably rubbed a lot of comedians the wrong way but that uniqueness is what made it good.
I’d like to add my apology to Dane cook here too. I loved him. He provided my friends and I with hours of laughter. Then, everyone started hating on him. I never actively participated but I did allow the feelings of those around me change how I felt about you. I was young. Now that I’m older, I realize what a mistake that was. But they can never take the good memories away. And there’s always time to make more.
Did he call you that in a bro to bro ribbing way or was he being a dick? It sounds like the former but from other stories that I've heard I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter.
To everyone complaining about Dane Cook plagiarizing Louis CK's bit Louis himself said, ""I don't think he stole from me knowingly... I think he sort of got some of my jokes in his head and got sloppy. He's a good guy and not capable of maleficence."
Louis is a such a standup guy (get it?) for saying that and I always liked Dane Cook even amidst the hate. He had a shtick that either resonates with you or pisses you off.
I think Dane Cook is terrible and Louis CK is pretty funny, but complaining about stolen jokes really is dumb. If you think you’re the only person in the world who came up with a certain joke all on your own, then you’re deluded. There’s 7 billion people on this damn planet.
@@rayresendiz4887 dude lost both of his parents within 9 months, he ain't a hack. You're a hack, you didn't even specify who else claimed he stole jokes
@mellamosean It is a great movie. Justin Long and Ryan Reynolds make it work so well. The supporting cast is great also. Shit, I think I'm gonna watch it tonight.
He definitely gave off the douchebag feel...also other comedian's didn't dislike him because he didn't give them shout outs as he say's... it's because he would steal jokes and bits from other comedian's...not as blatant as Amy Schumer or Carlos mencia but he did it
@@thisshouldbeentertaining3386 I think one of the jokes that he was accused of stealing from Louis (the strange name for a kid) was unfair, because they both stole it from Cosby, but the shoe size joke? Blatant Demetri Martin rip off.
99% of people who have some 'Hollywood experience' have the dudebro douchebag 'thing' going on....money+success+Publicist+Trendy+Fame.....he dated Jessica Simpson when she was hot, so it WORKS. If you look like a 'gamer/programmer', you will NOT be dating hot Hollywood chicks, ever. You look the way you smell.
I'll tell you why I thought he was hated. Think of it like high school: Comedy has a history of being the domain of the underdog, the nerd, the kids who smoked weed behind the gym, people who looked a little funny, or got made fun of. It was where black people got to turn their negative experiences into something to laugh at, where women made jokes about living in a world designed for men, where people who couldn't get a date joked about their looks. Dane cook was the guy who had the looks, got the girls, had never been broke, but still succeeded as a comedian. For a lot of people, the thing he lacked was the relatability of other comics. he wasn't laughing about how the world had kicked him in teeth, he was laughing because life was good. Anyway, that's what I've always thought it was.
I was gonna say it's because he portrayed an alpha male in a world where soy boys were starting to flood the internet. In a way it seems like he might've been the first casualty of the emerging cancel culture.
it wasn't just other comedians man a lot of people found him annoying myself included, mostly because he wasn't funny, he was just loud. literally his punchline was him just yelling something, he wasn't smart or clever and didn't bring any kind of unique look at shit
This man is a legend, love the fact he has no filter and can make anything funny. Our simple daily routines he can make it funny. Love him now and as a kid.. rock on Dane!!!
...you just said Dane Cook is a legend. I guess my green or albino dumps were "legends." If the definition for that word has been changed then I've birthed nutty, corny legends out of my asshole that splashed water up into my asshole that I needed to sop up with toilet paper. That said, my shits were funnier and frat-boys into date rape didn't listen to them when they went plop. I wonder if the the legend Cook floats? I'll never know. And that's called "tragedy."
I remember seeing him at a local college gig, maybe 2-300 people about 3 months after his Comedy Central Special. Dude destroyed it. Not 2-3 months later, he was selling out theaters, and stadiums not long after. A true enigma of the time.
Your comment reminds me of something Johnny Knoxville said some time ago think on talk show, some interview. Where somewhere from the time from the show jackass to think the 1st movie idk how long that was but telling him man you look old or got older type shit and hes like yeah the show(that got him famous and so the movies) was shot somewhat years ago! Sorry about my fuzzy memory maybe someone could find it but yeah people just rude and not getting that time tends to make you get older. Famous people in entertainment are held to ridiculous standards and its no wonder a lot have some sort of trouble like the lengths some go to to stay as young as they can look but doesn't always end up with best after effects.
Dane was one of the first comedians I worshiped as a kid. My buddy had Retaliation on a CD and we'd have sleepovers, play PS2 and listen to Dane Cook. Fucking loved him back in the day. I used to go to sleep to Harmful if Swallowed every night. I like revisiting his old stand up from time to time to reminisce
Dane's popularity tanked almost exclusively because he committed the cardinal sin of comedians - he copied jokes from other artists and passed them off as his own. That made him a pariah amongst his peers, and soured the traction he was getting with his fans. Rather than quietly apologizing and backtracking for a second, he doubled down on his attitude, putting the final nail in his career. It has nothing to do with his delivery, what he was wearing, or how "revolutionary" his act was. He brought it all on himself.

I was driving to work this morning and did his breath in, trying to stifle a cry during the day (wasn’t actually about to cry haha). I don’t even know where it came, I guess I just listened to him a lot when I was younger haha.
Because 20 minutes after he got popular all of the annoying people at work started saying “I’m gonna get a saaangwich” at lunch time and telling the itchy butthole joke at least twice a day.
Dane Cook is one of the funniest dudes I've ever seen. He's up there with the greats in my opinion. He had this awesome way of connecting with super nostalgic stuff that we all thought when we were kids. Seems like a cool guy to me.
I never stopped loving him, one of the most wholesome comedians ever. It always felt like I was listening to a big brother tell stories. I dearly miss him doing stand up.
He made me and my friends laugh so many times in the car driving to school. He was only unpopular amongst the dejected with life open mic crowd I ran into years later around comedy clubs . He had talent and a good personality haters gunna hate .
My girlfriend got me Dane Cooks dvd for Christmas back in the day. We watched it all the time with friends over and over. That girlfriend is now my wife.
@@SmackDab Well that's true. He actually sold out Madison Square Garden years ago. Only other comedian to ever do so was Andrew Dice Clay. But do some research on " What happened to Dane Cook". Most other big name comedians accused him of not only an inflated ego but didn't think he was at all funny. Oh & here's the biggie. He has been accused many times of ripping off other comedians material. Especially Louie CK's. So if you wonder why you never hear his name mentioned any more? That info may help. I'll take Bill Burr & Dave Chappelle over him by a million miles. Peace!
Saw Dane twice. Once in Vegas during comedy week on a whim. Laughed til I cried. Years later in Milwaukee, smaller theater, laughed til I cried. After the show he came into the bar next door, hung out shooting the shit with people. Never hated him. Wondered what that was all about.
Dane got depressed after his mother passed. He went through a series of trying to find himself. Vicious Circle is one of my all time faves. I still quote it to this day. Much love ❤️
thats what i hate about youtube comments people either read the headline or watch 30 seconds then just comment and click on the next video this world has so many haters
rickysnow400 look up his bit about naming a kid a bunch of letters, one of his biggest bits. Louie ck did it on a special years before him. There’s one you can look up easily. Sadly most videos proving it are taken down as Dane can claim copyright on any video using his act. Not saying he gets them removed on purpose could just be the RU-vid content ID system
Jules D Louis forgave him, and didn’t seem very upset about it. Dane was on “Louie” and they literally talked about stealing jokes. Doesn’t change the fact that he did it though.
That whole album was hilarious imo.. He was kinda like Jim Carey to me as a comedian.... He was the BEST at being something that you knew would just crash and burn with follower gimmicks
Just realised these are two comedians I actually paid to see live. Dane in the days when he went to college campuses and Theo last year. Well worth it .
You dudes are both AMAZING and for all the right reasons!!! I think I did a bit of ridiculous prejudging myself and came out of that fog and just can't get enough of both of you guys now. We all seem to go through that knucklehead phase. What matters is that we try to quickly come out of it so we can be better to ourselves and others!
The dude has aged y'all calm down. Your face will look older 15 years from now I promise you. Dane had experienced the "Coldplay" effect imo. Coldplay has reached a level of success that people love to hate them and granted, I am definitely not a fan of current Coldplay but no matter what you say those first 2-3 albums are dope. And I feel similar about Dane. I like his first couple albums more than the Madison Square set and that's kinda when I stopped following his career but that doesn't mean I wasn't crying laughing when I heard his first album. And I thank him for that. Being a teenager was difficult and his standup was one of many outlets for me to forget about the bullshit. I appreciate him putting himself out there like this. He's a human being like everyone else and it's cool that he can openly talk about the issues that come along with success and fame.
This isn’t just aging, it’s the result of several plastic surgeries. The shape of his face and his features are entirely different. He looks nearly unrecognizable.
