Why Did Russia Adopt 5.45x39mm & Pick The AK74?(Deep Diving With The SLR105A1 & SLR104FR)

Recently, I was horrified to discover that Fox had never fired a single 5.45x39mm M74 7n6 round in his life! Obviously, this I had to correct and after a bit of thinking, I decided that the Arsenal SLR-105A1 would be a perfect first small caliber AK rifle for him. While we were at the range, Fox asked me why Soviet-Russia created and adopted the 5.45mm round anyway? That got me thinking and so now you get this video. In it, i cover how both the rifle and cartridge were designed, developed, tested, and put into service just in time for the war in Afghanistan.
This video features the SLR105A1, a semi-automatic only version of the classic fixed stock AK-74. The 105 was built in Bulgaria by Arsenal AD, though some of the parts used like the trunnion are reportedly actually Russian.
Also we have the SLR104FR, a semi-auto version of the Soviet paratrooper's AKS74 with an excellent left side folding buttstock. Like the 105, the 104 was built in Bulgaria by Arsenal AD and imported into the USA by Arsenal Inc. of Las Vegas fame.
Both fire 5.45x39 and both are as close as you can get to the original thing, at least when talking authentic imports. Have a great weekend all, cheers.

The ak74 is an amazing gun, most of us get introduced to the akm and love the 7.62x39 and learn how to control it and handle it’s recoil then all of a sudden we try the ak74 for the first time like Fox … we are subconsciously expecting it to feel like an akm but we are blown away by how good it shoots and how easy it is to handle and control and shoot fast

@@misha5670 My uncle has a transferrable full auto AKS-74u. It was a pre-86 full auto receiver somehow converted with a Tula 74u parts kit to make it a full auto 74u, and it actually works very well. Even being so short and with a relatively high rate of fire, it's still very controllable. In my days of bump-firing, I got to the point where I could mag dump all 30 rounds from my SGL31, aimed from the shoulder, and was actually able to control it. It's not going anywhere. It will always be around, but it will never be as cheap as it once was. European, U.S. and other manufacturers will tool up and start making it - Capitalism, like nature, always finds a way when profit is involved. You can still buy new manufacture 8mm Kurz in 2022.... 5.45 will be around for decades to come, even for U.S. civilian shooters.

Won’t matter. Bc in the next decade once the government fully solidified their cashless society agenda and have full control over our money and bank accounts,, they won’t allow people to purchase firearms or anything; especially if they get their universal ban on firearms. 10 years is a long time for them. So the harsh reality is, is don’t count on being able to buy 5.45 or anything for that matter in 10 years

I love the 5.45 strippers and loader tool. The rounds load in smooth as butter on the good bakelite mags. They are kind of pricey compared to other stripper clips, but are worth it because like Misha said they have a locking tab that keeps the rounds from just sliding off until you insert the loading tool. I've got wood crates with rows and rows of 5.45 already loaded up on strippers. It's a great way to store them at the ready.

It’s a shame that embargoes and import laws have killed the market for these guns and ammo. If the US had access to the large host of weapons, parts, and ammo that are over in Eastern Europe I think we’d see a lot of Americans choosing this over 7.62 AK’s and even AR. 5.45 is a beast of a round and is awesome out of the AK platform. I know I’d choose a 74 over anything else if the market was there.
@misha5670
@misha5670 Год назад
Just to be clear, the sanction was only against Izhmash/KC in Russia and not other AK makers in Eastern Europe. Also, only 7n6 ammo was banned from import, and other types of 5.45 like say Romie or Polish were not. Truth is even by 2013, the truely cheap ammo was gone. For the glory days of 10 rounds for $1, you need to go back to 2009-2010.
@TheMrseanster67
@TheMrseanster67 Год назад
@@misha5670 I get that but so much of the market was driven by Russian AKs and surplus ammo that when it was banned those Eastern European countries decided to move away from 5.45 products. Yeah 7n6 may not have been at it lowest but you could still get it for at or under 2¢ a round up until the import ban.

I’ve wanted a “real” krink for years and I’ve come to terms with I’m just going to have to build a rough “clone” with a Romy Draco kit or something. I still need a 104 though… so that will probably come next but what are the options for a guy like me? Would love a video on AKS74U options stateside. Imported complete rifles or kits that may still be currently available that are at least close. I’m not sure even which countries actually made them. You mentioned a few in this video but that’s such a rare subject for people to have real knowledge about and you do, and I very much appreciate it and have enjoyed your content for years. Thanks!

Love the platform. Got a Galil ACE in 5.45x39 last year. It fits in well with my much modified slr104fr and my Krebs guns in that caliber. Fortunately, I stacked pretty deep before the 7n6 ban (though not deep enough) and bought as much commercial non-corrosive 5.45 ammo as I could afford before the sanctions. CJ Chivers in "The Gun" reports that the first 5.45x39 cartridges were barrel burners, wearing out tubes in as few as 1000 rounds. He claims the "R" pattern rifling was developed to solve this issue.

Interesting thing about 5.45 is it only has slightly less muzzle energy than 5.56, something like 10% difference if I remember correctly, however the recoil impulse is reduced by 40%, on top of that 5.45 is more ballistically efficient and maintains more energy over distance than 5.56. It's true that especially in the US there is some great 5.56 modern alternative rounds like 77grain TMK. However the 5.45 as a standard FMJ is just a better round. Really great design. It's like Soviets looked at US 5.56 and just improved upon the design through testing.

This maybe a bit off topic though, but the NGSW program with its perhaps the most controversial issue being the choice of the new ammo caliber, 6.8x51mm (Sig .277 Fury) Some people have suggested that they should keep it to a more intermediate cartridge: A.) Some suggestions include something like the 300 AAC Blackout and 6.8x43mm Remington SPC. To think tho that those cartridges are somewhat similar to the old Soviet 7.62x39mm ammo if I recall, I was wondering why the Soviets ditched that for 5.45x39mm? Aside from having milder recoil and lighter-weight allowing for more ammo, there seems to be an interesting argument for the heavier bullets that being they're more efficient requiring only shorter minimums of barrel lengths to complete optimal burn, allowing for shorter barrels and there more compact and even tho they're not great for long ranges like maybe beyond 200-300 yards, most combat takes place within 150 yards anyways iirc and conditions where long-range combat is more common like Afghanistan is the exception I suppose, and these more short-medium specialized rounds could be complemented by adding like battle-rifles/DMRs and medium caliber machineguns in the squads, other than more heavier, more powerful ordnances. B.) Another perhaps more popular side of these suggestions is something like 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC (which are all apparently based on the shape of the Soviet ammo which maybe a testament to its apparent superior design over the 5.56) which improves over the 5.56 with better ballistics at long ranges, but in order to achieve that, they have to require longer barrels which idk makes them less suited for CQB or difficult to fit in tight spaces. C.) All these suggestions tend to be an increase in caliber of the cartridge over the 5.56x45mm, there may be also the .224 Valkyrie, which is based on the 6.8 SPC case, again a kudos testament to 7.62/5.45x39 shape design, providing improvements in ballistics, flatter shooting and range over 5.56 with some weight savings but again perhaps to a more degree, the Valkyrie’s optimal performance maybe achieved in even longer barrels than 6.5 Grendel/6mm ARC. I don’t know also if the Valkyrie is a barrel burner. Other than that, there is of course the 5.56x45mm, which enjoys its status as the already established ammo for the military, industry and market. But idk, I'm not an expert lol.

Interesting. So on the whole would you say 5.56 inflicts more tissue damage than 5.45? It’s a great video but I’m surprised Misha didn’t talk about this. It’s my understanding that a major reason the US switched from 7.62x51 to 5.56x45 was because of it’s better tissue damaging capability at the ranges US combat forces were fighting the enemy in the Vietnam War. I always figured the Russians switched from 7.62x39 to 5.45x39 for the same reasons. What do think Wiz?
@wizkaqueefa9003
@wizkaqueefa9003 Год назад
@@markp4401 If you Research the Creation of the 5.45x39 by the Soviet Military engineers in the 1970s, they intentionally made sure the Round was NOT dependant on Fragmenting like .223/5.56, instead Yawing/Tumbling is the Primary method of wounding. 5.45 > 7.62x39 due to the low recoil & Lighter weight ammo.
@-Zevin-
@-Zevin- Год назад
@@markp4401 Actually it seems like 5.45 tends to do more tissue damage than 5.56 because of the tumble. The only exception is at extremely close range, where the velocity + fragmentation of 5.56 does more damage. Past 150+ yards 5.45 is just better. The way 5.45 tumbles hugely impacts how effective it is, so even at extreme ranges with major loss in velocity, it still tumbles in flesh, while the 5.56 at long range and low velocity just leaves little ice pick holes, with no fragmenting and no tumble, like being shot from a .22LR. So for example a center of mass shot from a 5.45 at 600 yards could still be devastating, but a 5.56 would likely deal a much less severe wound. In the 150-400 yard range the performance is pretty similar. Also in the case of 7.62x39 tissue damage, it's also a devastating round, but consider even if 5.45 is less say 5% less, you are getting far less recoil, far less weight, and more range, all worthwhile tradeoffs. 7.62 still has a place and that's why you see it being used in conflict to this day. Russia uses 7.62 in special forces urban combat where the heavier grain bullet has greater barrier penetration against cars, windshields, buildings, glass etc. and the range of 5.45 isn't needed. It's all about context. 7.62 also handles short barrels better than both 5.56 and 5.45 likely because of the greater diameter barrel and quicker powder burn, leading to highly effective modern short barreled 7.62 AK platforms for urban combat.
@JaykPuten
@JaykPuten Год назад
What's the best barrel length to get the most effective use of the 545 cartridge? For like 556 I know it's 20" to use it's ballistics to it's best, but what about for the 545? I don't know if you'd know the answer since given your situation you're not using to shoot to it's furthest range, just curious if you know In case I ever decide to make my own AK74 Or just buy one if that barrel length is available I wonder as well if you'd know the optimal barrel length for 7.62x39 and 300 blackout? I know it's unrelated but curious on all these cartridges, as I want to get an AK in both cartridges and an Upper for my AR in 300 blackout... And being cash strapped, I'd rather just buy one of what I want for the reason I want it However if you don't know the answer to these unrelated to video rifles I get it, just figured I'd ask every question at once, as there's so many answers on Google, but I'd trust your knowledge more on this topic if you happen to know Misha

Many are sending in pictures of peening rear trunnions (well, what the rear trunnion would be if it was stamped) and peening bolt tails, reporting the cause to be overgassing and the half-moon (for lack of a better term) cutout in the back of the receiver that was not present on the SA M-5 rifles. I haven't seen that with the one I got from you, but it might be an interesting video subject. What makes it more intriguing is that an Arsenal rep is saying that they're accepting it as a mistake and are looking into a fix. Obviously Tula is much weaker compared with Black Hills for example. Wouldn't it be funny if the solution was the same as it was for the original Century imported Zastava M70? As in, just install a different strength recoil spring. I have both receiver types here in 5.56 (US & BG). I could see whats what with them and if either shows more deformation.

@vevenaneathna
@vevenaneathna Год назад
@Kelly Harbeson nah if you google "PW Arms 7n6" you will find several mentions of ongoing litigation of a seattle/redmond WA based company who was initially granted renewed import licenses to bring in about +400million rounds of 7n6 in 2014 from ukraine/the balkins. shortly after in 2014 the ATF reinterpreted the rule on what AP ammo is by deciding a pistol able to chamber 7n6 was being sold online and therefore the rounds were now illegal to sell since they could theoretically be put into a pistol. at the time PW arms had already legally imported ~100 out of the 400 million rounds of 7n6 stateside but they had not fully cleared customs to be moved on to distribution. these warehouses were inspected/raided by ATF in later 2014 and the 100,000,000 rnds of 7n6 were "arrested" in place. its worse than being confiscated because the owner has to continue to pay for storage. the meat industry will do the same thing with beef if youre caught selling certain cuts without the right i's dotteted and t's crossed. unfortunately because this happened to a company in WA state, they have ran into every judicial hurdle imaginable to stop it from going to federal court. imo its ironic how the ATF is now trying to claim that AR/AK pistols are now not pistols (SBRs) in so many capacities, such that i doubt there is even the ability to make the same determination about 7n6 being able to be chambered into a commercially available pistol rofl.

The Soviets were impressed by the ballistics of the M193 5.56X45mm round in Vietnam when the Americans used it in combat. Light weight, fast, but lethal wound ballistics. Therefore modify the AK-47 using a smaller 5.45mm bullet but neck down a 7.62X39mm case to fit it, change the barrel, angle slope of the gas, change the sights, change the twist rate in the barrel, lighter Bakelite magazine, and add a muzzle brake. Basically a Kalishnikov that shoot like an M16A1 to 450 to 500 meters. Problem solved for Soviet infantry. Very good rifle for the basic rifleman but not made for modern modularity like the M16 platform. Putting bullets down range very good, but depends on the user...

The service it gave to the Soviet Union wasn't actually of any merit. They were in such a hurry to field 8mm Kurtz and STG-44 equivalents, and likely to get away from a rimmed cartridge, that they used the same forcibly cheap tooling changeover methods that would end up costing a lot more in the end. Everyone copies or takes ideas from others. In fact, the Russians were the first to implement the concept of a DMR rifle in a squad. The Russians built the first modern IFV, and the Russians created the AKM bayonet with the wire cutter integrated into the scabbard, all of which were taken by the US later. These are just a few examples, but there are literally hundreds.

where did you get the info about SA-006 being more accurate than the A3? plus there was more reasons why this rifle was ditched besides the ones you mentioned. if anyone curious you can read very short article about it at modernfirearms.

Max's site is excellent and back in the day he and I spoke on the regular. I have nothing but good things to say about the gentleman. By the way, if you go back to the 1950s and the trials that resulted in the AKM, it too was not the most accurate prototype design tested. Thing is it is still more than accurate enough and has many other positive attributes to make it a great choice.

@@misha5670 I have read plenty of declassified documents posted by Max and another guy who made huge researching work on those topics (Pavel Ptitsin, AK-info). on the trials soviet army measured a lot of other parameters besides accuracy. one of the most important ones are dispersion of the hits on target with fully automatic fire. SA-006 which you mentioned just like the other rifles competing with the classic AK designs indeed were usually slightly more better at this point. so as with shooting from unstable positions. but most of the time it was performance boost over AK less than 10%. complexity, price, potential problems and other minor factors simply not worth it.

Ironically the Soviets were experimenting with the 5.45 and other small high velocity cartridges going back to the end of WW2, before they even knew about the M-16. Seeing the M-16 being adopted by the US and studying its effectiveness did influence their push for general adoption, but it's a common myth that they invented the 5.45 specifically because of Vietnam and the M-16.
