My Russian professor was outside the day of the Chernobyl disaster marching in the Mayday parade with her school troop (if Scouts was part of school) and they too did not issue an evacuation order, for similarly corrupt narcissistic reasons. My professor told me when they found out what had happened during the parade her father burned his communist party card. So it very much was the death of the Soviet Union.

This professor is not apologetic to tell what he thinks is the truth. Very independent thinker!

Confusing lecture. Not sure how all these topics tie in together. I don’t believe the portions regarding bush etc. bush played into the facade of him being a dumb cowboy. Bush was in Florida on the morning of 9/11. Bush was an amazing impromptu speaker. Watch the one where he’s holding the megaphone after 9/11 in nyc (the famous revenge speech). Completely off the cuff, emotionally charged just for his audience. He was a poor planned speaker . If you watch the interviews of those in his administration, they always said bush was well prepared, did his “homework.” He was no Al gore or Hillary Clinton. But to portray him as completely idiotic is incorrect. Especially after seeing trump who didn’t even read his briefs and chose to do his makeup, bush seems highly educated lol

You need to decide if you are a stand up comic, or a teacher. Your additional personal opinions are not part of a history lesson.

NO. (1:08:12) Iraq was not random at all! The way they picked Iraq was that they wanted very badly to have a reason to go to war with Iraq.... It was part of US foreign policy for years, part of our strategy. We just need a reason.

One of my all time favorite series was an old show on the BBC called Connections with James Burke, about the history of science and how everything is interconnected. Roy's lectures are probably the closest thing I've seen to it since then. He should just do a web series and put it up on youtube where his real audience is instead of these half empty rooms at a community college; if for no other reason than to collect superchat money when someone has a question.

But you immediately lose that portion of the audience that have read the facts before and they will never trust your stories even when you actually telling the truth. I lived here in PA as a child until 1973, I was "kidnapped" by my mother and taken back to our home out west. I went to live with an Aunt in Virginia 1978. I never heard of this event until 1989 when I moved back here. (Here is where I can see 3 mile island from certain hills in the county I'm living in).

It is insane that we didn't have molten salt reactors and it was decided that - because we used water cooled reactors in ships - that was the "preferred" reactor to use. From what I understand, the Taliban initially offered to try Bin Laden in Afghanistan under Muslim law if the United States presented evidence of his guilt. This, of course, is a perfectly reasonable offer, but is a bit more nuanced than your description. Is my understanding correct or is there more to the story?

I would like to say here, though, that you seem to have missed the misogyny involved in the Clinton/Trump election. To me, it is a glaring omission. Whether or not one loves Hillary Clinton, I don't think any honest conversation about that election is possible without at least giving a nod to the intense misogyny in this culture, and how it affected that election. Given your awareness of the misogyny in America, I assume you know all this, but do think it is important to say it.

Roy is so right about staying engaged with government by writing letters, protesting, voting! For as George Bernard Shaw wrote “democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve”.

What Roy is indicating is how inefficient he US democratic system is, compared with the Russian system when Chernobyl was permitted to be abandoned making minimum harm to the people. The Chinese are better than the Russians, they were careful enough not to spoil the good destination.

Hey man, really like the lectures, but I’m an electrical engineer and to compare American nuclear safety protocols (even in the 70s) to soviet ones (or even Russian ones today) is beyond laughable and steers directly in the “intellectually dishonest” realm. Go watch the Illinois Energy Prof’s videos on three mile island & Chernobyl and you’ll see why. Just to start off: the soviet reactors are of a completely different (& unsafe af) design. That’s not mention the fact that western reactors are built inside a containment building with thick ass concrete that stops radiation from leaking. Sincerely, despite the fact I don’t agree with your politics, you’re obviously a great professor, but that doesn’t negate the fact you don’t know what you’re lecturing about in this one & it shows.
