Hi friends! today we take a look at the Capitol's reaction to Katniss's pregnancy announcement!
During the interviews before the Quarter Quell, Peeta tells Caesar Flickerman that Katniss is pregnant. The Capitol citizens are outraged, and a small riot ensues. But why does the Capitol believe that Katniss is pregnant? Why did they not conduct a pregnancy test on her to confirm, and therefore placate the crowds?

Hi friends! A quick reminder not to post spoilers for "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". The book isn't out in many countries yet, and won't be for another few weeks, so it's incredibly inconsiderate. Also, many of you have been asking when I'll make videos about it. I won't be making videos about it until the movie adaptation is released, as this firstly gives everyone time to buy and read the book, and secondly will allow us to use the secondary canon that is a movie to base ideas off of. yeah if I was Snow I would first figure out the truth if Katniss is pregnant and if she was I would not allow her to go back into the gams But, considering Snow being the evil Man he is would have wanted her to die or get hurt so she could get a miscarriage. ( Ps I hate Snow in the story line mainly because he puts children in the games and watches them die and has no Simmpathy or dose nothing about it.

Also I believe that the capitol couldn’t care less if a regular tribute was pregnant in the games. It was just because it was the baby of two of their favorite victors

I’m sure there were more than one pregnant tributes throughout 75 years of games. It’s possible none of them were showing yet or even knew they were pregnant but even if they were, I doubt the Capitol would be kind enough to make that exception. Also like another comment said, if they did then it would encourage girls to get pregnant to try to get out of the reaping. So yes, I definitely believe it was moreso because it was Katniss and Peeta’s baby than just any unborn baby.

The Capitol didn't do a pregnancy test because they knew the people they were worried about, the rioters, wouldn't believe a negative test. They'd believe the Capitol was lying and get even angrier.

Even if the test was negative, it would have just proven that Katniss lied to the Capitole, and that she was not on its side. Either way, the Capitole had no interest in proving anything.

That raises an interesting point as to whether pregnant girls have ever been sent into the games in the past, and if the public (or specifically the capitol) knew about it. If it had happened, as you say, its unlikely it would have excused them. And as others have said, the capitol only cared about Katniss and Peetas child as they were seen as celebrities by that point, and many capitol citizens were invested in their love story.

I’ve always believed Snow knew she wasn’t pregnant, however killing off a “pregnant” girl in the Games would be even more effective as a deterrent to the rebels.

The irony of an allegedly unborn baby's life being in danger causes the anger towards the game more than the annually 24 teens killing each other to death. I think a part of it is that it's a Victor's baby. The Capitol people seem to claim all of the Victors as one of them, so it feels like their own children are at stakes.

Perhaps Snow didn’t bother with the pregnancy test due to the probability of her dying/miscarrying in the arena. Also, if she’s pregnant going in to the Games, she’s potentially more vulnerable to being attacked and disposed of quicker, thus meaning he doesn’t have to get his hands dirty!

They didn't test her because it didn't matter. The terms of being drafted as a tribute states in the book I believe no matter what their physical or mental state. Barring death of course.

They didn’t test because people wanted to believe it. Katniss and Peeta’s whole act was a romance, so her being pregnant would just be a natural progression for the lie.

Another reason may be how with a pregnant girl going into the hunger, in the capital, there will be a lot more people watching to find out what happens and in the districts, this will bring hope and when hope turns to grief ( Snow thinking she will die) which makes the people will be easier for him to control.

Judging by how terrible Snow is, if I were him I might have cancelled the Quell as a grand gesture and then made sure that Katniss had a baby then arranged for both their deaths and made it look like the rebels did it just like Coin made Prim's death appear to be the Capitol's fault. But Snow indicated to Katniss at the end that because of Coin he was more focused on her and she was on him. So I probalby was not thinking as clearly as he should have been, this move with the Quell was uncharacteristically sloppy on his part, but the mockingjay infuriated him soo much.

Y'know I think the capitol believed Katniss was pregnant, In their minds, " Because Peeta said, Therefore its true." Katniss thinks Only Peeta could be a great face for rebellion because he CAN persuade people, he CAN act very well, and he CAN win the favour of any crowd.

Well I would have not even sent two people that were married let alone a couple. So Peeta and Katniss would have been excluded as soon as they started "dating". Therefore Katniss being pregnant would have not been a problem but they would have not had to say Katniss was pregnant.

Super late to this, but I would be under the impression that, if the Capitol (be it Snow himself, or some official statement) were to make an announcement, refuting the claim made by Peeta, it would negatively hurt the Capitol in three ways: 1) The Capitol would be seen as lying, or be called liars by any rebel forces, and more importantly. 2) Disagreeing with Peeta and Katniss would reinforce the fact that they are enemies of the state, something the Capitol is doing their best to keep from citizens. 2) By talking about the issue even further, it gives massive weight to what Peeta is saying. Any statement made by the Capitol would be talked about non-stop by Capitol and District citizens alike. As the conversation grows, it creates a feedback loop, giving Peeta (and by extension, Katniss) much more of a voice, agency, and strength in terms of messaging, which could be used to the rebellion. To simply not say anything gives them a chance for the issue to be ignored.

I agree, Snow told Katniss she had to sell the love story of her and Peeta. The baby contributes to the love story and distracts the Capitol citizens from the actual rebellion. As mentioned in the video, they already are unsatisfied that the Victors are taken from them (as their toys) and while the baby story adds fuel to the fire, it also gives the drama the Capitol loves. I think Snow figured the moment the games begun, the citizens of the Capitol would be so obsessed with which darling would win that they wouldn’t be thinking of rebellion.

I’m sure that Snow knew that Katniss wasn’t pregnant because he monitors her in every way possible. He didn’t expose her because he wanted Katniss and Peeta to act like lovers, and not rebels. A baby is the ultimately product of love. Also, if Snow announced that Katniss was in fact not pregnant, the District citizens - and to some degree also the Capitol citizens - would realize that Katniss and Peeta have tricked and mocked the Capitol (again). This could encourage rebellion because it shows that the Capitol can be outsmarted - even if only momentarily.

Snow didn't demand a pregnancy test because Snow was not worried about Capital citizens getting angry but rather was worried about those in the Districts that were uprising. Thus her being pregnant and yet still made to go into the Hunger Games would've made an even bigger example out of her letting everyone in the Districts know that no one, no matter the circumstance, is untouchable. It would've helped him install even more fear as to the levels he will go to should anyone step out of line.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes states that the Reaping takes place on July 4th, and we see in every book except Mockingjay that the tributes wait a few days before going into the arena so what if someone turned 19 during those few days or on July 4th (or what if someone would turn 12 on or 1-2 days after the reaping?)

In the poor districts, probably not. Katniss mentions apothecaries served as doctors. I would assume The Capitol would have means to at least a blood test, if not a urine one. They repaired Katniss hearing and gave Peta a prosthetic leg so good Katniss did not notice a limp. When I read the books I assumed The Capitol had advanced medical practices.

you come up with so many great ideas for hunger games videos, this is something i have always wondered about! SUBSCRIBED.! do you think the capitol didn't bother with the test because the public wouldn't believe them anyway? from the pov of everybody else, perhaps the capitol could have forced katniss to have an abortion and just told everybody she was lying?

I wondered this too. Mainly because I figured since the tracker could hear the heartbeat of tributes (to tell if they had died yet so they could set off the cannon) it could maybe hear the heartbeat of the “baby”

Simply answer: they didn’t care. If there was any chance that they’d ever cancel the games, they probably would have wanted to prove it. But since it was never going to matter why bother? If the test came back negative they’d lose any chance of the love story quelling the unrest because people would no they lied. There was no upside to testing, lots of potential downside to testing.

The capitol believed pita because they loved katniss and pita so they believed them and in the third movie when she went to district eight someone said how is the baby and katniss said it’s dead which would make sense because if katniss was actually pregnant I’m pretty sure her baby would be dead but they were angry that katniss and pita had to fight because they wanted the baby to have a dad and mom and not just a mom so yeah

At the end of the video you asked “ what would you do if you were snow in this situation?” And here’s my answer: I wouldn’t want to be snow in the first place but if I was I would have ended the hunger games way back when he became president. That way, the riots wouldn’t have happened and the capitol citizens wouldn’t have been tricked into thinking Katniss was actually pregnant. And the many innocent lives that had been lost in the past games would have been prevented and therefore the districts wouldn’t continuously have deaths every year. Yet again, I would not want to be snow in this situation, or at all, because he ruined the lives of many and was overall not willing to give the districts peace.

Yes, but if you point out Peeta and Katniss as liars now everything they have said and done in the past would have been questioned. And don't forget the whole act about them being in love as a way to mask Katniss defiances in the 74th games. And also all the speeches Katniss and Peeta had done during their tour in favor of the capitol. The intention Snow had was to show the rioters that Katniss and Peeta is one of the capitol. But if they would have exposed the lie - then the lie in it self would be a sign of defiance, which might spurr on the rioters even more. At least in my opinion. Let me know if I got anything wrong!

Snow hated Katniss so much that he didn’t care if she was pregnant or not. He would send her no matter her condition. That was condition of the 3rd quarter quell, that no matter the state and age of the tribute matters hence why Mags was put in the arena again.

I think that if Katnis was pregnant, Snow wouldn't care. So much the better fot him. If the games were postponed or cancled, so Katnis could have her child, it would be worse. If Katnis died but her child survived then there's a chance that the rebellion would try to control or use that child in Katnis's place. A year late to the party, but if I had been Snow I would never allowed the Quarter Quell in the first place. Far too risky Katniss wins again and becomes truly invincible. Rather, I would let the victors pick the next victims for the QQ. This would immediately put Katniss and Peeta out of favor if they picked people in 12 to send to their death. In the games, I’d make sure the tributes of 12 didn’t make it, but also not a career. I’d pick someone like Tresh, who had good odds but was from not a careerdistrict. It wouldn’t give more outrage and also not much hope. After that, I’d force a rather public and nasty break-up between Katniss and Peeta, making them also more uninteresting to the Capitol citizens.

I think Katniss and Peeta are pronounced as liars can be actually worse. As it can be spun that Peeta would do anything for Katniss, fueling the fire.

I completely disagree they wanted people to believe their love story so they wouldn’t call them out as liars. The reason people are rooting is because they believe she was going against the capitol when they tried to eat the berries and not because they were in love. This would only prove their defiance.
