Why did the mk5 ford mondeo 2l diesel engine seize

I had an idea that the oil pump was to blame for the engine seizing ...i did not expect the oil pump chain to be broken in two places let alone one but i am believing that the worn oil pump locked up momentarily which snapped the chain although that is just a guess

I do like your videos, I have been repairing my own cars since I started driving in the '50s and they have got progressively more difficult until the modern stuff like that Mondeo engine is ridiculous. I looked at your Ford/Citroen cambelt change and although you had it out of the car, it still looks doable. I have two C5's with that engines which are coming up due for replacement belts. I have done several XUD and 8 valve Hdi belts so with your help I think I should be able to manage these. I changed the thermostat/ housing on one of them, that was a pig of a job. You have a very good way of explaining things. Thanks.

Thankfully engine blow-ups are very rare these days, unlike thirty or forty years ago, but of course they still happen. The complexity of modern engines makes a write-off quite likely in terms of uneconomic repair. Car only worth a few grand and garage labour costs for several days work plus expensive parts means you might as well scrap the vehicle. All a bit different to when I worked on cars in the 70s and you could get a full or short rebuilt Ford or BMC engine for a fraction of the value of the car and you could usually get the job done in a day sometimes two at the most. Labour nowhere near as high as it is now - £80 to £150+ per hour depending where you go - independant or main dealer. Nice video, enjoyed it very much.

There is something very satisfying about finding the fault that caused the problem. What I hate though is the fact you had to do so much dis-assembly to get to that point, so it's obviously not a service item that you would do every couple of years etc

That's one of those two stage pumps, there should be a sprung mechanism that pushes the impeller housing off centre to increase the displacement at higher revs. The VAG diesel in my car uses a similar setup with a high rpm mode that kicks in at 3k. By the looks of the wear on the vanes that pump was called to run in the high rev mode quite frequently lol.

I'd say.. High mileage caused obvious wear to pump chain guide, chains then caught, an that equaled the snap an sieze, cracking the oil pump mount in the process due to basically an instant hydolock effect be it from chain locking it all up, or sheer forces involved at locking point. Oil pressure weren't gonna it, those guides were gonna get there first lol. Had more slack than a hookers door handle that motor, inevitable sadly by looks of it. Brilliant vlogs as always 🍻

I've never liked the idea of a 30 in any high compression turbo engines, especially diesels. Turns to piss pretty quickly and I find it highlights any wear points in the engine. It would be interesting to do an experiment where you run just one of these on 5w40 and see if certain components hold up better. The timing chain guides for one would hold up much better imo, as they seem to be a common wear point. With the wear on the chain tensioner guides (and broken spring on another one if memory serves correctly from a previous vid) and the oil pump you have to suspect a design life of maybe 300k km (186k miles ) ? So basically if you want to take the engine over 200k miles- as was mentioned for this one- then said items have to be considered consumables but do costs stack up? Probably cheaper swapping in another engine.

the top cam chain tensioners are becoming a worry..not had this on any of our mk4 2l engines with much higher mileage....the problem is in order to replace that tensioner involves a lot of time and would be a very expensive job..probably including all parts like new chain ...cam belt kit and gaskets etc would be around or above £1000

@@alan4x Thanks Alan, it did occur to me after posting just how much work would be involved when I thought on your other vids covering the Mk5 engine. As for trying to sell £1k of "preventative" maintenance to taxi drivers....esp when they keep driving even with engines rattling their fillings out !

I find 5w40 oil and 6k mile service intervals goes along way to prevent wear like that. 6k miles is way too expensive and inconvenient in a taxi though!

What year car was this from, for 200000 miles could be expected. Its when you get engines failing on low mileage is a worry, This guy loves taking things apart, interesting video, please take some more apart.

Certainly not due to the ongoing Steering Motor Housing Bolt issue. Got a few developments on that. Drop me a line soon and I will bring you up to date. Chris.

FoMoCo on the engine with the Peugeot logo right underneath. Yeah, I know Peugeot make the ford diesel engines for them, I actually owned one. Great motor, but does ANY manufacturer make any of their own stuff these days?

Any videos on how to remove the turbo on the mk5 mondeo mate? I need to do it on my diesel ST 🤣
@alan4x
@alan4x 4 года назад
not yet but you would need to remove the driveshaft..it would be a lot easier to get to the turbo from underneath by removing the subframe but not necessary...once all the heat shields are removed from around the turbo then it just unbolts from the head

Hi, I got a challenge for you. I own the same engine just in a volvo S40 2009 2.0D 130hp I am loosing coolant without smoke or leaks real quick if the turbo is working properly. What I did is I disconnect BOOST PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE vacuum line causing the engine didto lose a ton of power as turbo does not kick in as hard but the coolant is then only lost at tiny amounts - can do like a thousand or more miles before I need like 500ml, Head gasket kaput or some other issue? Sealer liquids did not help.

why didnt the engine shut off or go into a significant derate if it completely lost oil pressure?

the engine would have been in low power mode...the engine won't switch off altogether or the driver would have no control

Top work! I would have repaired it instead of going for a second hand engine. You never know its history for sure. Or maybe in UK they don.t lie about mileage and overall engine history?
@bormisha

Not sure for businesses, but private people purchasing a used engine from a business typically get an 1-2y warranty on it, if certain conditions on the engine installation are fulfilled. And it makes virtually no sense to buy a used engine without a warranty because the risk is too high.

@ashleyburnett134
@ashleyburnett134 4 года назад
Either a cardboard cut out draw a rough graph or your head and the bolt holes, stick the old ones in there as you remove and then for extras split them up into little plastic pots with labels. That works well for me!

Seems like to prevent mass carnage it might be wise at 200K to change the chain tensioner. Also, what service intervals do you use to change the oil? If its the ford 18K miles I'd say that is too long. I'll be having mine done every 12K. If it had an oil feed problem it will have not done the turbo bearings any good either. This all sounds like the issues BMW and VW had with their main chains with the extended service intervals.
@alan4x
@alan4x 4 года назад
hi michael, we use the ford supplied 0w/30 oil and replace it every 15k miles, which as these are taxis is around about every 3 months
@guffermeister
@guffermeister 4 года назад
In a taxi I guess 15k isn't too bad as its going to be basically running all day so doesn't have the temperature change of hot/cold which breaks down oils. I do wonder if prolonged stop -start sessions don't do the oil much good. Also depending on the running conditions another factor could be diesel in the oil from lots of normal DPF re-gens - I can imagine an urban taxi doing that a lot if the engine speeds are not maintained for a while. Difficult to get a measure of how often they'll do it. Airport runs wouldn't be an issue.
