Why didn't Sauron make another Ring? | Lord of the Rings Lore | Middle-Earth

While Sauron possessed the One Ring, his victory seemed almost inevitable, for it allowed him to surpass his limits, dominate the minds of his enemies, and there was very little in Middle-Earth that could stand before the might of his armies. And yet after Sauron lost the One Ring in the Battle of the Last Alliance, he never tried to create a new ring to replace it. In today's episode we'll try to unravel this mystery as we answer these questions: Why didn’t Sauron simply create another Ring to empower himself once more? Was it even possible? And would this new Ring be as powerful as his old one?

Do you think it would have been smart on Sauron's part to craft a new ring? Or would he have been better off to keep what remained of his power to himself? As always subtitles are available and feedback is welcome. I'd also like to thank my fellow LOTR youtuber 'Lore of the Rings' who was kind enough to provide me with the first clip that was used in this video. He's an awesome creator and he's got some really cool content in the works, so trust me, go subscribe to his channel because it's gonna be an incredible experience! Here’s what Sauron (and especially Melkor) should have done. Teach then trick other Maiar into crafting rings of power into which they pour their essence, and then take the rings. If dozens of Maiar did this, Melkor/Sauron could have greatly increased their power without any risk of losing their own. Melkor should have never poured himself into Arda, instead focused on gaining power this way, and eventually assassinating Valar one by one by pushing them out of the Door of Night. Eventually the strategy would change to revealing true nature and just taking them face on.

@@denislemenoir Agreed! The only problem is morgoth was so angry at Daddy for being humiliated in front of his peers that he went all hell bent on corrupting their creation..... But yes he should have sat back and waited but obviously he was too passionate in his hate.... But you are correct that would have been off the charts powerful because how many Maier equal a Valar? 2 or 3 or maybe 10? It's unknown however when morgoth was being assailed by ungoliant he had become overwhelmed now whether you believe ungoliant was a Maier or personification of the void or the discord.... If she was Maier who became too powerful much more powerful than the chief Valar himself (as stated by Eru himself).... And later she was overcome by numerous balrogs... That could mean that two or three lesser spirit equaled one greater spirit so if ungoliant was three times the power of morgoth then the balrogs would have had to have been at least combined greater than her, and if she was three times as powerful as the chief Valar.... There would have had to been a minimum of 12 balrogs to dispatch her..... Which they did and it could have been even greater than 12 ( it could have been around 50 if we consider morgoth being the chief Valar.... He was 10 to 20 times more power than your standard Valar so Ungoliants power must have been off the charts) Imagine All that power like you said from all those Maier into one ring..... Morgoth himself being the chief Valar in Power and having all of the other attributes of the other Valar was able to fight against all of them for untold ages..... As told in the first book of the silmarillion.... So that would have made morgoth second in power only to Eru.... So possibly morgoth was ORIGINALLY possibly 16 to 20 times stronger than the other Valar in the beginning of his dissension...if that was the case then if he held back and waited for the other Valar to expend most of the power into Arda then create some form of ring from other Maier he would have only been overmatched by Eru himself and could have taken on ALL of the Ainur then descend into Arda in Mega power form...... But he put all of his power into Arda and his creations in squandered all his gifts.... But one thing's for sure in the end he did win because he forced the Valar to flee outside of Arda and completely corrupted it.... Even him being out in the Void and Sauron greatly diminished....he was still victorious..... Because by that time the Valar who opposed him were even more diminished than he was....

I think the fact that Last Alliance could beat Sauron with the ring means that even if he'd gained the ring at the end of LOTR he would not have ruled forever. There's probably something theological going on here. In the same way that Tolkien apparently thought that even the orcs were not irredeemable, he also thought that Sauron would not have been invincible. That's because Sauron was lucifer-like fallen angel who was not Eru, the LOTR version of God. And actually, Eru did intervene twice directly in Tolkien's mythology. Once to nuke Ar Pharazon and Numenor and stop one of Sauron's plans and once again to bring back Gandalf from the dead. So in essence Eru wasn't willing to let Sauron win. Eru's solution to the problem of theodicy seems to be to let things play out naturally in order to allow for good things like free will and heroism until they got close to disaster and then log in as root and intervene ruthlessly in Arda, nuking continents and bringing back people from the dead. I think this is close to the way Catholics like Tolkien see God working.

Very interesting take. About Sauron gaining the ring, the elven rings would lose their power, weariness would fall upon them like a mountain, and they would bolt to the West and leave for the Undying Lands. In other words, no "Gil-galad" to take Sauron down again. I think if Sauron ever repossessed the Ring, the Valar would probably have to come and take him down themselves, like they did to Morgoth.

Orodruin burst once more into flame, and was named anew in Gondor Amon Amarth, Mount Doom. *But Sauron struck too soon, before his own power was rebuilt,* whereas the power of Gil-galad had increased in his absence." Sauron: Sure I have one "one ring", but what about a *second* one ring?

I think Sauron even deliberately saved some of his powers by instructing the Noldorin smiths to create the rings of power themselves, that their and not Sauron's creative potential would pour into 19 rings. He abused their once-in-a-lifetime creation 🦾

@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
@@Enerdhil Well because they spent their potential already... it's the same answer as the one for this video. And what do you mean by hypothetical? 😁 My point is that creators in Arda, be the Ainu, Elv, or Dwarv, can create their masterpieces only once and that Sauron's treachery goes beyond magically attacking them with the Ring after feigning friendship for 300+ years. He basically tricked them into spending some of their unique creative potential on treacherous and cursed artefacts. I don't know if that is possible to pool the essence / creative power of several elves into one artefact. I mean, the two trees were created in cooperation by three Valier, so perhaps there is a way for Elves to imitate that. However, if they were to succeed in forging a ring that would dominate the One and actually use it, they would be corrupted in their ow way. The Elves of the Second Age under Gil-Galad did not desire to dominate others, the rings were created with the promise of healing and slowing decay. I don't think even Fëanor would have fallen so low as to fight Sauron with Sauron's methods, though perhaps one of his middle sons would have been interested in that.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil 3 года назад
@@Crafty_Spirit I agree with almost all of what you posted. I just don't think Sauron saved any energy making the rings. I think he poured out a lot of his energy into making the Rings of Power. How else could he have controlled the possessors?
@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
@@Enerdhil That's true, because the Elves presumably poured some of their essence in the 3 and 16 rings and because they are mighty, Sauron needed to put an extra amount of energy into the One. He did not safe energy in the numerical sense, but he saved it in the sense that he could control the dispensed energy better through just one artefact. That is not what I initially meant when I posted the comment you refer to, but I had some further thoughts following your remark 😁 Let's say instead of creating the One he creates the 16 and pours some of his essence into each of them. He thereby invests less essence than for the One who costs more to be effective. There are however two serious downsides to this: One, he has less effective control over his power - instead of wielding one artefact, he hands out 16 to other individuals. Two, the people who receive the Rings are out of his control yet. The Rings may enslave seduced men, but if you give it to a powerful Elv lord, he could reject the ring, possibly master it, or even destroy it without casting it into Mount Doom. So I think we can say that Sauron encouraged the Elves to make the Rings themselves partially because he did not want to sacrifice a part of himself on rings that could slip out of his control easily. He poured most of himself into the One because he thought that there would be no safer vessel for his power, and he was absolutely right in that - it was even safer than maintaining that power in his body.

Here's how that would go down: Sauron loses the one ring, flees. Starts to set up in Mirkwood as the necromancer, but no one takes him too seriously because he is still weak. He makes a second (vastly weaker) ring of power. He is taken seriously, draws the attention of the white council, Gondor, Arnor, and all the free people now have someone they can target. Sauron gets taken down again, and is even weaker for the loss of the second ring.

I think there would be a huge reason for Sauron NOT to create a new "One" Ring not mentioned in this video. If the original One Ring was the most powerful and designed to "rule them all" then there's a very high probability the original One Ring, being more powerful then the new "One" Ring, the new "One" Ring would be subordinate to the original One Ring, and thus even if Sauron were to do this, sacrificing even more of his native power to forge it, if he were to actually use it, he would be vulnerable to anyone who happened to possess the True One Ring of being dominated by the will of the bearer of the True Ring. Even Gollum could conceivably have dominated the will of Sauron and supplanted him as the new Dark Lord in that case. Perhaps even forcing Sauron to permanently attune the True Ring to his new Master. Imagine, a Lord Gollum, Master of Sauron and thus Mordor? That would be truly nuts!

Interesting video... It got me thinking about how Saruman was also a former Maia of Aule, so presumably given enough time and effort, he could create an artifact of equal power, if Eru allowed it of course... But imagine Saruman lending his power to Gandalf in this way, I don't think Sauron would be able to withstand it, and assuming it was made before Saruman's betrayal, it wouldn't have the corrupting influence the one ring has. It really highlights how severely Eru handicapped the Istari.

Eru was a non-interventionist, he didn't really have a lot to do with direct influence on Arda, that was the Valar and Maiar's job, we only know of him actually commanding anything once, when he ordered the Valar to invade Middle-Earth to fight Morgoth. He was content to let things play out without feeling to much need to directly act except when Morgoth threatened his creations most seriously. It was by order of the Valar that the Wizards couldn't unleash raw Maiari power. Then he sent Gandalf back, that was his other direct intercession, but it wasn't on a command but rather because he wasn't done with his mission yet. He also probably yeeted Gollum off the cliff of Doom. He largely wanted the people of Varda to fight for themselves with only as much assistance as needed to guide them. Eru kind of became a recluse while waiting for the Second Song.

What I don't understand is why Sauron, given the ages he had to do that, didn't seek for one of the lost silmarils, as one of them would far surpass all rings of power united. The one of Earendil is clearly out of reach, the one that fell in the sea could be quite easily recovered if there wasn't Ulmo and Osse assuming you have enough time to spot it (4500 years seems to be enough), but the one which fell in the depths of earth should not be a problem for someone who lived centuries buried underground in Angband with his master, and balrogs seem to be quite at ease underground, so should he have tamed Durin's bane or by any other method, he could have had a silmaril instead of his puny ring !

Also I think he learned that it might not be the best idea to pour his power into a physical object he could lose because, well, he did. :D Kind of ironic that creating the one ring might have been the only thing that made him vulnerable against mortals, because otherwise he might have been able to eventually regenerate for an infinite amount of times if his physical body is destroyed but now that he put his spiritual (otherwise ontouchable by mortals) powers to a physical object, mortal could (and eventually did) destroy him. Two silly questions: It always seemed that Sauron wasn't aware of the Elven Rings; when Celebimbor crafted them, Annatar had already left, to fabricate the One, so how did he even know that the bar of mastery had been raised? How did he know how much of his soul would actually be necessary to surpass the threshold the Elven Rings had set? Also did Celebrimor have to give up massive portions of his essence to make them, or were they freebie Rings? We know that the Dwarven Rings were something of a failure, at least in hiw Sauron tried to use them on the Seven Fathers; they didn't turn invisible, nor become wraiths, and Sauron didn't gain mastery over them, even with the One on his finger. What about sensory, though? Could he perceive their activities, even if he gained no control over them? It still might've been an advantage, during the time he still had the One, to k ow their minds, and deeds, even if he couldn't influence them through the Rings, and just maybe it helped keep the Dwarves out of the Last Alliance that little bit more, that he could push them away, or know when to send distraction forces to harrie them, and keep them in their own matters.

Tolkien speculates that Morgoth in the void might be able to reform himself over time on his own (something the Maiar could not do without devices like the One Ring). As we have a prophecy of Morgoth returning, and as we have some evidence that Morgoth could give a new form to defeated Maiar (e.g., Boldog and his repeated return), I wonder if Gandalf was perhaps a little hasty in claiming Sauron could never grow again. Never again without the aid of a Power, but never ever even never. . . I wonder.

Sauron's will to dominate all others was a misfortunate desire to be instilled with. Essentially he wanted order and rule, but he took the quick path to power to achieve it. So we have seen just the caveat's that his pursuit of fast fulfillment brought upon him, instead of say, he do the rightful path and convince other's to follow him through benevolence and strength of character with leadership. It seems like a bit of a parable to me.

Do you have any idea how much work it is just to make one all powerful ring? That ringmaker already charged Sauron like a hundred thousand billion zillian franks. And then after it's made you have even more work to do just to put all your evil powers into the ring. Feeeewwww....I feel like I just worked a 48 hour work day just thinking about it. It's just too much work man. Give our lord and savior Sauron a break. He already has enough on his plate creating jobs for all those Orcs and Uruk-hai. And don't even get me started on those lazy Ring Wraith's flying around. Too lazy to walk to work or drive a horse like everyone else. That flying thing didn't do ya much good against that king's daughter. Cut it's head off then stabbed you in the face. Four Hobbit's disliked this video.

Why he had to explode was it the Ring hold his armor and his big size. Without the ring his armor or his body can't stand up anymore or what makes him explode? Just coz he lost some fingers plus the ring well pick it up is all he had to do.

Up to a point, Sauron's plan was a reasonably good one, & would have paid off brilliantly if it had worked. In his pride, though, he was way too quick to put on the newly forged Ring, & thus exposed his plan before it was ripe......a fault that I believe was also at play on The Pelannor Fields. His old boss, Morgoth, had a similar issue, as I recall the Silmarillion said that if Morgoth had waited a bit longer before launching the Dagor Bragollach, his victory would have been complete.

It is a depressing view in Tolkien's world, that things apparently never grow. They are *made*, like an apparatus. Otherwise I would assume Sauron would just gather strength, renurture himself over time, like a healing organism. I mean, even if the Ring burned, would Sauron's "energy" not just leave? Like energy doesn't just vanish. It must be, logically, somewhere "out there".

I think you nailed it in this video. Sauron’s division of his power in his scheming was his eventual undoing. Sauron was afraid of Galadriel, Saruman, Gandalf and most of all Aragorn. He knew that if any one of these took the One Ring to himself he would be defeated. Saruman with the One would have been dangerous in the extreme because he saw in Saruman the same anger and resentment he had felt against Aüle his Vala master for not praising his creation of volcanoes, especially his first work Orodruin. Pride and bitterness ruled Saruman’s heart as he knew that Cirdan had given Narya to Gandalf rather than himself when they arrived in Middle Earth. This in Saruman’s mind should have been given to himself as head of the Istari. So when Saruman betrayed Sauron it made Sauron wroth. But Saruman never learned of the One Ring from Gandalf. For the others, they were all tested Galadriel most of all, but all refused to take it. Sauron could not conceive that any one of these powers would reject the Ring. He feared Aragorn most of all because Aragorn was the heir of Isildur and knowing the weakness of men for desiring power, Aragorn had both the strength and the right to wield the One. Sauron could never forge another Ring like the One, as you have mentioned. It could not be surpassed just as Feanor could not make more Silmarils for Feanor poured much of his own essence into their creation. The power of Valar, Maiar and the Elves had only a finite amount of power granted by Eru. Melkor weakened himself by his creations of evil. It is arguable that all the Valar combined would be hard pressed to subdue Melkor at the height of his power.

Sauron claimed to be the inspiration for the rings of power but that doesn't make it true, we've been through that lesson with trump. Never forget that celebrimbor was Feanor's grandson and an elf of high intelligence who, I believe, actually conceived the rings and Sauron helped with the 7 and the 9 but never the 3. From helping celebrimbor with the 7 and 9 he gained the knowledge to forge the one but the idea was not his Tolkien wrote in The Silmarion" in "Of the Rings of Power and the 3rd Age" "In those days the smiths of Ost-in-Edhil surpassed all that they had contrived before; and they took thought, and they made Rings of Power."

After Sauron and others maya became evil, they became atach to their phisicall bodies, which appears to became the recipient of their power,and when their bodies are destroyed, the same happens with their power and they are unable to regenerate a new body. This is the closest state of death in tolkien univers, incapacity to create a new phisicall form, even the soul of men don't die, but they are considering dead if the soul leaves body and can't have a new body, even if their soul still exist. So, if sauron never create the ring, he would've die in numenor's fall. So, yes, the creation of the ring was very wise, the ring was his "true body" for his life's force, and also it seems like he was it functioned as an amplifier for its powers, just as a telescope magnifies an image. His fall was caused by his arrogance, he never thinks that he could be defeated with one ring. He should have come down from barad dur without a ring, he probably wouldn't have been able to kill both elendil and gil galad, but after his body was destroyed, his spirit could have returned to the ring and would have taken it from the beginning. in the end the fence of the dark tower would have fallen. but he was too arrogant. The principal purpose of the ring should be to be the container for his life's force, just then should think about him like a weapon.

It was explored in the Shadow of War series, when Celebrimbor created a new Ring of Power, he bound himself to the ring in order to create it, thus leaving it utterly unwieldy. This would leave Sauron in a similar state as he'd require someone to ware the ring in order for him to manifest himself if he did but if the host was to be removed from play his spirit would be trapped within his lesser creation. A weapon is only as useful as the strength behind it.
@thyservant07

Sauron created the one ring not only to dominate his enemies from within and seek to control the land of middle earth but most importantly the ring preserves much of Sauron's life force, will, and power. Sauron knew one way or the other he might be destroyed by his enemies, so he created an artifact which is the one ring to preserve his life force, power, and will if he does fall into the field of battle which he did. Even though he is destroyed that most certainly think, but Sauron's spirit endures because of the ring. Destroy the ring and Sauron will be no more.
@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
Hi 😀 I agree mostly but have two remarks to this: 1. Perhaps Sauron did not consciously decide for the ring to save him from irreversible physical death and the decision to ensnare and dominate the Elves was the primary motive. 2. You can also kill Sauron by mastering the Ring, and some individuals during the war of the ring are powerful enough to achieve this.
@thyservant07
@thyservant07 3 года назад
@@Crafty_Spirit Hey there friend.....I would pretty much disagree with your second remark. Gandalf, Lady Galadriel, Lord Elrond, and pretty much many more clearly state in the movie and book that none other than Sauron himself can master the ring. If indeed someone powerful intends to will the ring, it would corrupt his/ her heart, will, and power to do good. The ring of power is more like a Computer virus, where it destroyed the whole computer system from WITHIN. It has the power to corrupt, dismantle and control anyone who wills it without him/ her knowing the changes evolving around and within. Who knows...maybe whoever wills the ring could be more evil and corrupt than Sauron was. On the other hand, I would like to know whom you think that can master the ring apart from Sauron, and please do explain how.
@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
@@thyservant07 Hello :-) Tolkien discusses in Letter 246 (or watch this other video by Geekzone: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fCW0DeYmCbY.html) the possibility of Gandalf mastering the ring. I also recall a remark by him that perhaps Elrond or Galadriel could have achieved the same but can't remember the source now. You are correct in saying that the Ring would corrupt them but they would have a chance of replacing Sauron (and that would be his end). From the books I recall vaguely that characters said rather than that the Ring cannot be mastered, that its evil purpose cannot be changed. It is formulated less clearly though than the advise to never attempt to use it to dominate others. I mean, consider this: if it was impossible for the Ring to be conquered, then why does Gandalf claim that Sauron's biggest fear was that someone powerful would challenge his position as Lord of the Ring? He can be patient, so he could have simply waited until the Ringbearer would succumb to him. Instead, he is very worried when Aragorn fools Sauron into thinking that Aragorn would have the ring. And Sauron did not account for the idea that someone would want to destroy the Ring. Galadriel says that the Ring offered to her was tempting, and she in her foresight and wisdom does not predict that she would become a slave to Sauron but that she would replace him and be distinct from him (though apparently also evil in the end). So to stick with your virus metaphor: I think the corrupting code of the Ring cannot be changed, but the administrative rights would be overwritten. Evil would triumph but Sauron would be rendered powerless. Sauron is not idealistic - he does not rejoice at the idea that no matter what and who, there will always be a dark lord or lady - meaning that he very much is bothered by the prospect of losing almost all of his power to a successor. I speculate that the process of mastering the Ring is dangerous, arduous, and without a guarantee for success. When Galadriel speaks to Frodo about using the Ring to read other's minds, she seems to indicate that this requires mental exercises and I think (not sure on this) eventually an iron will directed at dominating others, too. I guess it is a similar process as adjusting a Palantir to your will, though much more perilous. As to who could do that... Tolkien drops Gandalf's name in letter 246, in the book Galadriel implies that she has the potential to do that, and I think Tolkien at some point also mentioned Elrond. I don't think that any Man not even Aragorn could do it, but Sauron seems to consider it at least possible. Saruman is an interesting candidate because he is a Maia, too, but I think he is very much about overestimating his powers, though he also has extensive knowledge on ring lore. So yeah, I think the book alone gives you the answer - Sauron very much acts as if the Ring can find a new master, even if only very few individuals are theoretically able to do that. I wish I could show you a clear quote where it says that this would destroy Sauron (he would not only lose power over the Ring, but all of his essence he poured into it - that results in the same as if the Ring was destroyed) but I don't have it now

This was a plan to do so as easily as possible, with no need for armies and wholesale destruction and when the plan failed, Sauron chose the more difficult path. So, if everything had gone according to plan Sauron would have never had to rule the world through might, but instead threw craftiness and clever designs. But, as we know, the plan did fail, and I doubt he would try the same approach again. He learned from his mistakes, and would not make another ring of power.

How did Sauron connected the One Ring to the others again?
@KeppyKep
@KeppyKep 3 года назад
The exact 'mechanism' for connection and control is never really explained. Just as Tolkien leaves the 'mechanism' for most magic unexplained. We also don't know how the powers of the other rings 'worked', just the effects that they had. All we can say is that Sauron created both the design of the rings, and the method of creation. His goal with the rings was for them to be subservient to the One. So he must have somehow incorporated this feature into their fundamental design and manufacturing process. It being part of their underlying design is important, as it meant the ones Celeborn made alone were still subject to the One.
@ChamblesRNG
@ChamblesRNG 3 года назад
@@KeppyKep So the design itself, a, basic 'blueprint' if you will, has control in mind already. Disguised however so even Celebrimbor could not see this while making his own rings? I wonder what was that then.. Cause it surely could not have been magic? Well.. Celebrimbor had to 'enchant' his rings somehow and then he must have realised he is doing somerhing wrong? Or at least suspicious? Or did he give the rings to Annatar for any period of time so he could have performed his witchcraft over them?
@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
@@ChamblesRNG I think the Rings of power build a magical network like the Palantíri as they all work in the same "frequency". That does not seem to be a problematic thing when you consider 19 Rings that are connected but have no master... Celebrimbor thus had not much reason to be suspicious until after Sauron created the One that introduced a dominating force into the network 🤔
@ChamblesRNG
@ChamblesRNG 3 года назад
@@Crafty_Spirit Yes but at the same time Celebrimbor was a master of his craft unmatched in history maybe save Feanor in his age. Surely then he would have seen that there is this pattern and mechanism in the rings. Wouldnt he at least question it? Had doubts about its purpose?
@Crafty_Spirit
@Crafty_Spirit 3 года назад
@@ChamblesRNG Well as said I think he realised that the Rings form a network but was not bothered by it or only little. He may have thought that they were even deliberately meant to establish telepathic connections to his Elven friends who would receive the rings, where is the problem in that? It seems he did not consider the possibility that Sauron would betray them and create a ring that would not only communicate through the ring network but dominate their members. People are sometimes not critical enough when you promise them what their heart desires 🦖 And it's also possible that the fact that the Rings formed a network was an inevitable consequence of them being created in one batch, with the same method, magic, and material. They seem to radiate magical power, so perhaps it's natural for such artefacts to connect with each other; Sauron knew that and it was a key component of his plan, while for Celebrimbor, it seemed like a harmless side effect.
