Toy Story 4 actually brought me down. I was really attached to the idea of friendship and how loyal Woody was to his values. He never abandoned Andy and I couldn't see him just dropping Bonnie like that. Woody and Buzz's friendship was strong and yet in Toy Story 4 they relegated Buzz as being unimportant, even dumbing him down where I couldn't recognize his character anymore. He knows he is a toy, he knows the voice lines are just programmed in from the TV show he was from. He wouldn't confuse it for being his conscious after all these years... I dunno... pretty film but it really felt like they threw away the original cast.
@hunterolaughlin
@hunterolaughlin 11 месяцев назад
To be honest, it would’ve been hard to feature Mr. Potato Head prominently considering Don Rickles’ passing during production of TS4 and the crew, with Rickles’ estate’s blessing, were only relegated to using unused recordings from previous voice recording sessions. Even if the original cast was more prominent like in the previous films, it’d still be hard to have Mr. Potato Head in a supporting role with Don Rickles’ passing, and it’d be a challenge finding someone who can perfectly impersonate his voice.

@@hunterolaughlin This is not a unique issue in the industry though. There are ways to still honor the original cast of characters without sacrificing narrative and character development, but that's my opinion.

To be honest, I think Walt Disney himself had the right idea. Sometimes, you have to move on. Like Edna Mode said, "I never look towards the past because it distracts from the now". She was right. Once a story is done, it should be left done. Honestly, I think some franchises would have even survived better if people just let their natural courses run like Terminator, Alien and more.
@michaeljordan5630
@michaeljordan5630 11 месяцев назад
I think how a sequel should be done is awknowegling the franchise logic and character growth of our protagonist, and either expanding it to a new challenge or looking at another flaw the protagonist has. I think the worst sequel do the 'You think you know but you don't' Trope. Where they want to tell the same story but twist the world building and character changes to a new prespective that defy what happen to suvert audience expectations. You can survert audience expections but it has to be within reason. When you try to have your story break your audience understanding of the original without understanding how it tie back to the original, it make people feel like it lesser than the original. Not terrible, but just lesser.

The toys in Toy Story 4 state that Bonnie stopped playing with Woody, especially when Forky became a thing.....but there's a scene where she's playing with Forky AND Woody. So its safe to assume she plays with her toys more than others but she still plays regardless. So Woody feeling rejected makes so sense!
@SpectreBagels
@SpectreBagels 11 месяцев назад
Well no, even in what you said, she clearly didn't stop playing with all her other toys just cause of Forky. Even Andy played with some of his toys more than others, that's not a reasonable reason for Woody to give up on his kid after multiple movies showing his devotion to his kid whether he is the main man or not. Toy Story 4 HAD TO regress Woody to a Toy Story 1 mindset, but worse, in order to make it "make sense". But as the 4TH MOVIE in a series.......it does not

Im honestly more upset how they made Bonnie become more irresponsible than how she was in TY3 TY3’s Bonnie was shown to be playful with the toys and she even promised to Andy to keep them together no matter what. Especially Woddy, and she loved Woody as her own toy. Especially how she even rescued Chuckles from being thrown out when he was broken as he said that Bonnie took him in and fixed him They just made Bonnie irresponsible. I get she’s just a kid and that she can lose interest in Woody, but she literally forgot about him and placed all her attention to Forky and didn’t even bother to look for Woody

Compare Frozen 2 to HTTYD 3. Both were made in 2019. Both capped off their respective franchises (or seemed to at least, until Disney decided they wanted more money). Both dealt with themes of coming of age, and accepting of change, and were aimed at older audiences. But HTTYD 3 succeeded in many ways where Frozen 2 failed. Granted, neither film is perfect, but imo, HTTYD 3 had a clear sense of direction which tied into what happened in the previous 2 films, and brings everything to a (mostly) satisfying conclusion. Frozen 2, on the other hand, felt very rushed, seemed to forget all about Elsa's character growth in the first film, and overall lacked a sense of direction. For me, this is a microcosm of how Dreamworks is beating Disney at its own game.

I'd love for Disney to make films intended to have sequels, like we're setting up for a massive story.
@emicastudios8500
@emicastudios8500 11 месяцев назад
THIS! I've been saying this for so long, but why can't they just create one massive story that gets told over the course of multiple movies? This way the story can go at a much slower and comfortable pace, leaving room for good character development, and even worldbuilding, instead of having to squish everything about the story into a 1-2 hour long movie. This also means that a sequel doesn't have to come up with a new story that completely breaks the audience's understanding of the first movie or completely ruin everything about it. Heck, it's even good from a box office point of view! if the first movie is just part 1 of a multiple movie story, then people will be much more excited and interested in going to see the continuation, and how the story progresses.

A few folks have said it already, but I’m in the camp that liked Rescuers Down Under. I think it’s one of the few genuinely good Disney sequels. And no, while McLeach is a funny villain (though, yes, not one of Disney’s greatest), he’s not the only thing I remember about the movie. Its opening is stunning, which was, by the way, one of Disney’s first collabs with Pixar. The sequence of Cody flying with Marahute easily deserves a place in the Hall of Fame of Disney animation. Animation-wise, the whole movie puts the other Disney sequels (and the first movie) to shame, not surprising since it was released theatrically. Wilbur was hilarious and had some silly one-liners. Jake was…okay. 😂 And Bernard and Bianca’s dynamic was fun to watch. Story-wise…it’s Bernard and Bianca saving another kid. What more would you expect? That’s their job. 🤷‍♀️ Not everything has to be about fairy tales. It’s a cute little adventure flick, and I think it works just fine.

11:28 You know when you brought up Frozen again, I remembered your prior vids on it where you mentioned the nonsensical nature of Elsa being the fifth element. And then realized how they could have easily resolved this particular issue by having her actually represent like, spirit or heart, or mind or something. In essence saying that she wasn't actually limited to ice powers, but rather because her heart was cold and closed off, she expressed her powers through ice. And that only when she can embody all other four elements would she be able to truly become the fifth element. To be calm and patient like the ocean waves, to hole passion that burns like a raging fire, to let your heart soar like the winds, and for your body to be as strong as the earth. And maybe thats what the writers originally intended, but never got to do thanks to disney's insatiable hunger for money, and if being true to yourself is the theme they wanted for the second film. Then it would have been a perfect continuation of the original story for once, and likely have been one of, if not the best sequel they've ever made.

If you know the background to Toy Story 4, you would know how many writer/director and creative challenges and changes it went through. And ultimately, you can feel that in the final product. A jumbled, out of character, barely tolerable, unfocused mess that has almost nothing of value to say other than maybe two things that is aging faster than the original three the more time has gone on. The reality is that Toy Story should have never gone past a trilogy because it was never that kind of movie series.

In my opinion, Dory was done dirty on the whole "Just Keep Swimming" front. Dory was not taught that song as a child, rather it is something she just came up with on the fly. Let's look at every instance in "Finding Nemo" when Dory starts singing "Just Keep Swimming." The first time she sings it (also when she made it up) it helps to calm Marlin's nerves enabling him to brave the dark abyss. The second time she starts to sing it, when they are swimming into a strange mist, Marlin cuts her off by saying her name very sternly. Now this could simply be read as Marlin telling her to shut her trap, she's annoying, however, I'd read it as Marlin telling Dory "I don't need you to calm my nerves this time, after all we've been through I'm less afraid than I was when we first set out." Dory resigns to simply humming to herself, kind of hovering around letting Marlin know she there when he needs her. The third time she sings is when they are escaping from the net with all the other fish. In this moment (where there is no interruption from Marlin, btw) Dory is simply saying "WE DID IT, HOORAY!!!! 😁😁😁"

If they need to stop it's because the Walt Disney Animation Studio is a studio meant for 2D animation that isn't meant to be wanting to put out sequels for 3D animated movies that they weren't even meant to be making in the first place. That's why any of their past direct-to-video sequels (or if you want a better example, The Rescuers Down Under) are still going to be better than Ralph Breaks the Internet or Frozen 2, because at least the former still reflects what Disney's own definitive style and brand of animated movies is supposed to even be.

The biggest problem with sequels, is unless you're 110% dedicated to them, in the post physical media era... you really can't make any money off them. Disney, or any other company has been making direct to vhs/dvd sequels for decades... and that alone was a novelty. But streaming isn't that profitable, even when compared to low-budget direct to vhs/dvd films... but thanks to streaming, the novelty of that is gone. Plus, we're in a bidding war right now, that is super cutthroat, with literally everyone competing for attention. What we really need are 2 or 3 streaming services, that offer a variety of content, not exclusive to any specific studio, much like how Netflix originally started out. We will get to that point, but it's going to be a long slog... probably another 10 years. The good news is that streaming companies are collapsing, so it shouldn't be too much longer. We see this same pattern with every innovation of the past. For example, did you know that Porsche made tractors? This will end... one way or another. I just hope we get quality again. The good news, is that theaters are the only profitable medium left... and people are only willing to go there, if they are guaranteed quality... so I'm confident. Take care, my friend!

Excellent video. The main problem with Wreck-it Ralph 2 is that it fails to maintain the same tone that the 1st movie had. The first movie was essentially a love letter to classic arcade gaming in the 1980s/early 1990s. Of course, there were the longstanding classics such as Pac-Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Street Fighter, but then they introduced long-forgotten classics like Q*Bert, Burger Time, and Zaxxon. Fix-It Felix and Wreck-It Ralph were both stand-ins for Mario and Donkey Kong, respectively. I also loved how the repetitiveness of Ralph's job as the bad guy led him to feel dissatisfied with his life and desirous of a more virtuous job. That not only made him sympathetic, but also fit in with the movie's themes about 1980s/early 90s gaming, especially with the repetitiveness, simplicity, and linearity of games from that period. Right when the ending credits started rolling, I was seriously excited about a sequel. I was imagining a sequel that covered mid to late 1990s/early 2000s video gaming. So, we'd see Ralph go into arcade racing games with sleek sports cars and impossible physics; weird experimental games that didn't fit into any genre; 2D/3D platformers with cute animal mascots; ultra-violent first-person shooters that took place in dark, claustrophobic battle arenas; and 3D fighting games. I was hoping for references to Ridge Racer, Daytona USA, Sonic Adventure, Mario 64, NiGHTS, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Crash Bandicoot, Quake, Unreal Tournament, etc. There's a lot they could've done with this sort of setup. What did they actually do in WIR: Ralph Breaks the Internet? Internet memes. Oh My Disney. Google, Snapchat, and Instagram. WTF?? This is the same problem I had with Cars 2, which abandoned the themes of automobile racing and small-town Americana for international espionage and counter-terrorism. Cars never covered that sort of thing, and that was primarily why it's so disconnected from part 1. That's also why Cars 2 is one of the worst big-budget (>$70 million) animated movies I've ever seen. Even Shark Tale wasn't as bad. WIR 2 is nowhere as terrible as Cars 2, but were there any social media jokes in part 1? No. So, why are we covering internet memes and social media jokes in this one? Is it because they thought that a younger member of "Gen Z", such as someone born in 2008, wouldn't relate to late 90s/early 2000s gaming? The first one was a major success with this crowd, and that covered another period of gaming that existed long before they did. So, that concern doesn't even make sense. Dumbing down Ralph to make him a 6-year-old in a large man's body hurt this movie even more, as did his disturbingly close friendship with an under-aged girl. He would've worked better as a mentor that Vanellope looks up to instead. Disney needs to quit making sequels that have nothing to do with the first movie. This plagued Cars 2 and WIR 2. By all means, they're allowed to make a new movie if they don't want to maintain the spirit of the first entry.

I want to say that in my personal opinion the sequels based on Disney Renaissance movies and before are not as bad the current sequels. And before anyone gets all up on me hear me out.. this isn’t to say that there weren’t certain sequels that were god-awful (I’m looking at you Mulan 2), but they were also direct to video and very explicitly low-budget. The standards were low and the expectation was that this were literally just kids you let your kids watch in your vhs or dvd players to entertain them while doing chores or going on long car drives. Probably the only exception to this was the Peter Pan sequel which was on theaters. What makes these new movies so frustrating is that they are HIGH BUDGET MOVIES. They are supposed to be quality and in fact do have potential! So they raise their audience’s expectations but rather than taking their time in making a movie worth their budget they simply create Pretty Colorful Shiny Thing Kid Buy while also pandering to adult nostalgia but ALSO with a plot that caters to… no one??? Like ok while I agree that the Toy Story franchise shouldve ended at the third movie, I do think that a movie based of finding Bo Peep was honestly a really cute if not for all the other weird stuff they did. For example Bonnie no longer caring about Woody could’ve worked if they would’ve gone the Toy Story 1 route where Andy stopped caring about Woody until he lost him, otherwise it turns out really unsatisfying, depressing and makes the 3rd movie feel like a waste of time, like at that point it would’ve been better if they just stayed at the daycare. The idea of Bo Peep being a girlboss is absolutely fine too and probably one of the only redeeming aspects of the movie but once more making Woody choose between her and his Friends and making it seem like they might never see each other again is devastating and once more completely goes against the themes of the original movies because Woody really spends three movies trying to keep everyone together even sacrificing staying with Andy just for his buddies so he can just essentially abandon them in that last one? Like yes I cried but not for good reasons lol. I think this also helps villanize “Girl Boss” characters more than they already are because it makes people resent Bo for making Woody choose. I honestly don’t understand why couldn’t Woody continue being with his friends while also working on his new calling with Bo. The same problems can be seen in one way or another in Wreck it Ralph for example. Its weird that they take good ideas and just wipe their butts with it all for marketing purposes

They also don’t have to be on the same Terminator 2 level of greatness but I feel Dreamworks far better should give Disney a good lesson.

5:18 I really really enjoyed The Rescuers Down Under and it's still a nostalgia film for me. I hadn't watched the original Rescuers movie when I watched the sequel. So in my mind it was always the "orignal" because I watched it first. Add to that that the setting of Australia has always felt so grand and majestic to me both as a kid and to this day. And that I freaking LOVED the lizard back then it cemented that sequel in my heart forever.

Oh Snow White and the seven dwarfs and I’m looking it up right now. Wish is the original animated movies coming out Also, I forgot to add in Mufasa, which is another live action movie.

Following up with Inside Out 2 not having all the same VAs, it's like Aladdin, when Robin Williams wasnt in the second one but in the third one. And out of all the old Pixar movies, A Bug's Life has and still had no sequel/prequel or even a shott film besides in Toy Story 2 credits. I know it's based off from a well known director many years ago. And the movie may be old and outdated, but it is still a good movie that doesn't need another movie unless they make a bug movie about other bugs

I don’t think a Pixar, DreamWorks or Disney sequel or midquel is always a bad thing but it has to be well done. It has to explore the main characters in greater depth while remaining true to who they were in the first film so that you understand their struggles and motives better. If the first has a powerful sense of finality, then there’s really nothing more to be said.

In my opinion, I think a zootopia sequel would work if done right. It has already this big world building plot, that could easily incorporate any new characters/ villains and overall plot. It’s a shame that due to Disney rushing Frozen’s sequel, we could have had something better, all the concept art and deleted content shows this. Wreck it Ralph 2, I will always pretend that movie never existed, for how they completely ruined the first story’s values.

I sewer to Gods you are either blind or stupid if you think Rescurs Dowunder was "lackluster", beautiful animation (which is double as impressive since the first move might be the ugliest of Disney 2D), a pretty good story, an environmental message that was actually made well, decent characters, cute message about conquering your fears, good villain, iconic moments. Rescuers Downunder is the ONE AND ONLY sequel Disney actually made well and that surpassed the original in every way (which wasn't as hard since I always found the first movie painfully boring), the only thing that was wrong about it was audience reception, but ever since it bombed it is now regarded as one of the beloved classics from Disney Renaissance, fate it, unfortunately, shares with many wonderful movies like Iron Giant and Megamind, so what's your point?

The sequels I found I enjoyed the most was not the sequels focusing on the heroes, but on the villains. Maleficent and Cruella come to mind. I don't mind one dimensional villains, because that's what they're there for, but the fact that they were looked at and the writers went, "No, there's something more here that can be told" is so fascinating to me. That and the world of Disney Villains is so completely under represented and untapped from a market standpoint. There's so many people out there who stan for the bad guys because it's just fun, and I'm here for when it happens. Another set of sequels that cone to mind is The Lion King 1.5 and 2. The Lion King is a great story, and is complete in and of itself, but what I enjoy about the sequels is that they continue with taking from Shakespeare or Shakespeare adjacent material. It's the thematic and conceptual throughline that make those sequels enjoyable for me as an adult now.

"...when they focus on what they own instead of what they COULD create..." This summarizes Disney SO WELL and is also why Disney has become such a let down. Sequels are all well and good when they have a *purpose*. There should be a good story to tell that happens to fit within an existing IP, not having an IP you want to keep relevant so you force out a new story. It feels like Disney has focused on the latter, and it diminishes what made the originals favorites in the first place. Speaking of sequels though, this isn't the first time Aldone has brought up a love for Tron Legacy. Considering how a lot of the discourse for TL was pretty negative, I hope we get a break down as to why it's such a favorite for them! I feel like it's a film that doesn't get enough love.
