As you may have figured out by now, we love to talk about dead or struggling companies, which usually end up bankrupt. Just in the retail sector last year, Century 21, Brooks Brothers, JCPenney, GNC, JCrew, Guitar Center, and a bunch of others all filed for bankruptcy and filled the news headlines.
But, somehow, if you go to your local mall today, you may find bankrupt stores up and running.
So what gives? Is it a capitalist instrument to keep the economy going? Maybe something more like that.

You know Caya, what really makes this channel unique is the content you choose to make a video about. It’s very clever, these types of subjects most people have questions about in the back of their mind, however, the answers are nowhere to be found, unless you read 5 books about that specific subject such as (bankruptcy), not only you make a interesting and exciting video about it in less then 15 min or usually in 10 min, but also an average individual would get it what you’re explaining here. Well done sir, this can only be the beginning for you.

Thanks Caya. And thanks Slidebean. I understood this entire video. Struggled with Financial Accounting for my degree. Passed it now and this was a good reminder of the struggle I overcame to actually understand anything remotely related to accounting. And this video explained bankruptcy perfectly fine. No lies. Bankruptcy is even expensive. Most times companies don't file. This is another lesson that in the capitalist economy, only the strong hearted win. Many don't. Regardless, risk is good. Great video. Great concept. Y'all are doing great. Much love from Nigeria.

Hey awesome video. Just wanted to say I appreciate the lighting, editing, and use of clips from the office and monopoly. Didn't really know the difference between the various chapters of bankruptcy. Since covid cause quite a bit of companies do you think the bailouts for these companies are good or should they just liquidate everything?

When large chain retailers liquidate these days, specialist companies sell off the goods in stock. Most don't know that they actually bring in MORE goods and often raise prices. Yes, raise prices. Most people think when a store is liquidating they cut prices, but because so many have this belief, these specialist liquidators take advantage of shoppers gullibility.

RE: Corporate Bonds vs Stock. Okay, this explains Chamath and Tesla as he holds his positions in the Corp. Bonds and he has mentioned in interviews that this gives him all the exposure to the upside while minimizing the downside risk, I get what he means now as he is one stop up the food chain to get his money *if* Tesla were to implode.

BTW, a bankruptcy trustee also gets to control who enforces any rights the debtor has. For example, let's say Mrs. Smith files bankruptcy but has a personal injury claim possibly worth $250,000. The TRUSTEE gets to pick which attorney(s) will represent the bankruptcy estate in attempting to enforce that personal injury claim. Note: if you practice personal injury law, a trustee may be a good person to know!

I’ve always been terrible at Monopoly. I just simply cannot win..and I’ve felt like there was a deeper meaning to that Edit: I’ve always thought bankruptcy was like fancy fake garage sales. Saying that they’re moving but once you buy everything or whatever..you realize they were never moving or they raised enough money to keep the location or something

Government pension is called Social Security and is paid by the government. Company pensions was actually late stage socialism and has largely been replaced by 401K plans where the money is yours to hold and manage.

…in previous years the FBI knew that most small businesses fold in 7yrs …there is nothing wrong with that unless there is a pattern of illegal behavior…it behooves the US to encourage productivity so it errs on that side

I think all the dividends and share buybacks for the previous 5 years should be taken into account during bankruptcy, and the shareholders wiped out if that money should have been saved in the bank and used to cover the companies debts instead.
