Dig into the 4 main blood types - A, B, AB, and O - and find out why some bloods can mix while others cannot.
--
It’s often said that despite humanity’s many conflicts, we all bleed the same blood. It’s a nice thought, but not quite accurate. In fact, our blood comes in a few different varieties. Natalie S. Hodge defines the four major blood types and sheds light on why some bloods can mix while others cannot.

kolang82 Remember that not only your genes are the ones that carry over to the child. Also the genes of your parents, your grandparents and so are carried. That´s why both parents with brown hair can give birth to a blonde child, and also why parents without O blood type can give birth to a O blood type child. A good example is me. @SixStringOverdose
@SixStringOverdose 4 года назад
00:44 for the brief off-topic thing you had in mind yes, but for the on-topic discussion you were in the middle of, you made a HUGE HUGE mistake by presenting the antigen as being something to which the white cell binds to, therefore not having an immune reaction. Nothing further from the truth. If it were so, they wouldn't be antigens, they'd be self-antigens. You forgot to mention that those antibodies (which are found in the plasma) are the opposite of the antigen. So for example, type A has A antigens and anti-B antibodies, type B has B antigens and anti-A antibodies, type AB has both A and B antigens and no antibodies, type 0 has no antigens and both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. That's why the immune system doesn't attack its own blood because it DOES NOT bind to it, since it's different and only attacks "opposite" blood types as I described above. I know what you meant to say, you just said it almost the opposite, which can be devastatingly confusing for a noobie :)

But what about O being a universal donor? Then the A and B will bind to, well, A and B, as opposed to being universal
@SixStringOverdose
@SixStringOverdose 3 года назад
@@thechair6519 type 0 is an universal donor because again, the name suggests the antigens. So with 0 type, u have zero antigens, so when u give this blood to a person, there's nothing to react TO, no matter what antibodies their plasma has (no antibodies for AB blood types, A antibodies for B blood types, B antibodies for A blood types or A&B antibodies for 0 blood type). So no matter how rich or poor the acceptor's blood is in antibodies (attacking cells), there's nothing to attack, since 0 type has 0 things to attack :)

Very well done. Two small notes, incompatible blood would agglutinate and hemolyzes as result of action by the immune system and hemolytic disease of the new born is generally a potential issue in the second and subsequent pregnancy , if care ( the administration of RohGAM ) is not given during the first pregnancy. It can happen if the mother was sensitized either by blood transfusion or a spontaneous abortion that went unrecognized, miscarriage or termination of pregnancy or fetal bleed but it is rare. Although not as common it can also involve the ABO and other antigens within the Rh system an other antigen like Kell etc. I realize this my be a little beyond the intended scope of this video, that said, this and other reasons should make clear the need for prenatal care.

Interestingly, I'm O -, I can only receive from an O-individual but can donate blood to everyone, that makes me a universal donor, but I'm very picky when it comes to receiving. The dynamics of blood types is amazing. It's a matter of life and death. I'm not sure if this has same basis when it comes organ transplant, ie. Kidney etc. .

Just want to advocate for people to give blood donation a try, if you can. The first time can temporarily leave you a bit woozy, but for most people, their bodies get used to it quickly. All blood types have their uses-I don’t bother giving whole blood because, as an AB+, my red blood cells aren't as useful as my platelets and plasma, so I specifically stick to donating those. No matter your blood type, there's someone out there who you can help by donating. Consider giving it a try! It's one of those rare types of charity where you know what you are donating is going to someone in need-what other use would an organization have for blood products? Can't say the same about cash or even things like toy drives, sadly. The American Red Cross often offers online gift cards in exchange for your donation, which is a nice extra incentive for some people. It's really a good thing to do, if you can.

I would have liked to know more about the positive and negative stuff, but otherwise good job! And also for anyone who may know the answer, will everyone eventually be an AB blood type, because A and B override O?
@legerdemain444
@legerdemain444 2 года назад
No over time everyone will not become AB. As there is no selection pressure the numbers of A, B, AB and OO should remain constant. O is the most common blood type in the USA at 45%, followed by A at 40%, B at 11% and AB at 4%. In order to have an AB blood type you need to inherit an A and a B from both parents. So if you have AO and BO they will have a one in 4 chance of having AO, BO, AB or OO. Just because a gene is dominant, doesn't mean it will it increase in the population.
@OmnipotentO
@OmnipotentO 2 года назад
7 years later (lol) but no. O is just way too common and people that are A and B can still carry the O allele to pass on to their children. So their kids can be pure O, resetting the cycle, depending on the other parent.

There are alot of people being confused about their blood type especially regarding their parents. Even though One of your parents is A or B (which is the dominant) and one is O (that is recessive) that doesn't mean you will have The dominant one. It is more complicated than that but the easiest way to do it is using a punnet square. You see if you have a blood type B+ it not just B. It could be purebred and be BB or hybrid and be BO but both will still have B+. But when crossed with a blood type o that can only be OO and not BO or AO since it is a recessive allele (pardon my spelling) and will be overwrite by a dominant alelle (idk about the spelling) so by crossing it using a punnet square ( I advise you to research about how it works but it is really easy) you will likely have BO if the allele is BB and will have 50% BO and 50% OO if the allele is BB
@204lemon
@204lemon 2 года назад

Why did the scientist call those proteins surfacing the RBCs *ANTIGENS* ? I mean, isn't the name, 'Antigen' used for traces of toxic foreign particles that enter the body and needs to be destroyed/consumed. How come 2 entirely different proteins have the same name? "RBCs Antigens teams up with WBC to fight toxic Antigens" - Wouldn't this statement create confusing around many students?
@infinightsky53

No, antigens maybe different for different organisms,but its properties and functions are similar tho.They are present at the surface of cells, it's even true for every foreign entites,it might be the case when some antigens are lost from the source which makes the immune response and helps in identifying them.Even though its bit confusing , it's true
@moonbeam2062
@moonbeam2062 3 года назад
According to the NCBI (National Center For Biotechnology Information), "The functions of many of the blood group antigens are not known, and if they are missing from the red blood cell membrane, there is no ill effect. This suggests that if the blood group antigens used to have a function, e.g., one particular blood group antigen made red blood cells more resistant to invasion from a parasite, it is no longer relevant today." So, basically, it sounds like what that's saying is, whatever the reasons we have antigens on the red blood cell surface, it's from way back in time when humans were evolving and those reasons are not relevant today. Kind of like bodily hair I guess, lol.
@ChrisM541
@ChrisM541 3 года назад
An antigen is any molecule that can cause an immune response. It doesn't matter whether that immune response is in your own body (e.g. microbe attacking you or you attacking it), or in another body (e.g. via transfusion or transplant where the recipient might attack the foreign material) - the important point is that this 'antigen' molecule is known to be a target for an immune response. Note that there are many different molecules on the surface of a cell and each one may be the target for an attack - in which case we call them antigens. You are protected in your own body since your own immune system will (usually!) not attack yourself.

When talking about these antigens, it's always regarding blood transfusions. Why is there no information about how these work with the immune system? (1) First, antigens normally identify foreign entities like bacteria and viruses. Is it not true that all our cells (even stem cells) have antigens also called cell markers as identification? RBCs have a job. Do any of these alleles improve the performance of an RBC? If not, are they needed? Don't scientists have serious ideas why these exist? (2) At what point does the body start to generate antibodies based on the RBC alleles? With disease, it starts with infection. With RBCs, it probably starts when they're made early in development. In disease the antibody generation ceases doesn't it, but RBC antibodies continue to be generated? (3) The immune system upon seeing a pathogen with antigen 'x', generates antibodies that MATCH the antigen. But in this world of RBC antigens, the body makes antibodies that are OPPOSITE. If RBCs have 'A' antigen, it makes 'B' antibodies. How does the body imagine what the antibody shape is if it hasn't seen the antigen? And if both A and B antigens are missing, it dreams up antibodies for both! This goes against what's taught in the amazing immune system. Is there another system at work here?

I think maybe we have a conspiracy on our hand here because I ask the lady at the science fair blood type demonstration to talk alittle about the RH factor and she wouldn`t do it. She would not even talk to me about it in a private setting / privately! It would seen no one wants to talk about this RH neg. RH pos. blood type problem! AND of course those of us whom have researched this blood type phenomena know that the RH blood types does not mix well. AND thus is historically the reason why so many women over millennium of time have had child birth problems via early premature childbirth problems via the mother blood type rejects the baby blood type and thus the mother body goes into this self abort mode and starts to abort the child from her own womb..

This problem can really freaked ya out when ya don`t know exactly why it is happening! BUT.. back then I don`t think they knew as much about this topic as they do today. So anyway! I think what they finally did was give him a blood transfusion thus and he got better right away with in a few hours. We was able to take him home after the long ordeal he went threw as a premature baby spending two weeks in intensive care fighting for his life thus it was a very scary thing to watch as a young adult parent I was only 19 yrs old at the time ( he weighed just 4 lb 15 ounces when we finally got to take him home with us. : )

@iro.___2257
@iro.___2257 2 года назад
Well it's a little more complicated. The characteristic of blood type is controlled by two alleles for each person. Two similar genes that control the characteristic in a different way. Those genes are located in two different chromosomes. When someone is A+, their alleles could be AA or AO (only A is expressed cause A>0). The same implies to B+. As a fetus you get one chromosome from each parent, due to a procedure that's called meiosis. So if your parents are AO and BO you could get the allele O from each parent. And as a result you have blood type O (00).

@moonbeam2062
@moonbeam2062 2 года назад
There's several. One that I just recently found out about is cis-AB blood type. It's very rare around the world, It's mostly found in Korean and Japanese population but it's even rare in those populations! But I think the rarest blood type in the world is Rh null. Also called "the golden blood type" because it has absolutely no antigens so it can be given to any blood type in the world. There's only about 50 or so people that have it world wide. But the disadvantage for them is they can only receive blood from another Rh null donor. So, basically they are all 'on call' in case one of then needs blood from one another. They can be flown on special flight clear across the globe to help another Rh null person who needs a transfusion.

@moonbeam2062
@moonbeam2062 2 года назад
@@Coasterdude02149 Yeah, the cis-AB is interesting, Don't know of you had a chance to read anything on it. Some consider it a fourth blood type. It's a mutation where the A & B gene types are together on one single allele! So, unlike a normal AB type person who inherits one A allele and one B allele from their parents, the cis-AB person inherits one allele with both the A&B gene on it and then the other allele can be like a normal allele containing an A,B or O. In any case, the cis-AB allele will always dominate whatever the other allele is. Also, because the cis-AB person is able to have an O on it's other allele, that means that person can have an O child if that O allele combines with an O allele from the other parent,. That would be impossible to happen with a normal AB type parent because they only have an A allele and a B allele to work with from their two inherited alleles.
