Brian. Same. I’ve owned two construction companies and have never heard of this. A simple wood chip does the same thing.
@chaosmasker9858
@chaosmasker9858 4 года назад
I think a more appropriate title would be why a handyman should carry golf Tee's. A carpenter is most of the time building new. Not repairing. You are not going to find any new construction Carpenters with golf tees in their tool box. Now as a repair carpenter/handyman there are numerous reasons to use golf tees. Tho a simple splint of wood wittled down to size works just as well. PS. Another great use of a splint is if a screw has stripped out the hole it's in from a lot of movement over time. Just splint the stripped out hole and drive in a new screw.

Rub some of the lead of your pencil on the end of the striker, close the door, activate the handle a couple times, and it will leave a mark exactly where the plate needs to be. Bamboo barbecue skewers from Walmart do the same thing cheaper. In the kitchen gadget aisle, 100 x 12 inches long for $6. Instead of Tapcons in concrete use a number 10 standard screw and drill a 3/16 hole in the concrete. Drill the same size hole as the screw, put a round toothpick or two in the hole and it's much cheaper than a Tapcon. In cinder block you can drill a hole using a 5/32 Tapcon bit and run the #10 standard screw into the hole.

Bambo chop sticks and wood glue for me works best. Dip the tip in glue and shove it in there, Ask for a set when you order at any asian food take out or eat in. Keep up the good work love your shows. Thanks.

Also wooden matches for smaller holes. My main use of tees and wooden matches was always as a hole filler and wedge when a screw hole got sloppy and the application required reusing the same screw. Good content!

I've always used matches and splinters for this, like other comments, but sometimes it doesn't fill the full depth. I like the idea of something with a head for hammering. If you're really stuck though, you can do it with card/paper/plastic.

I'll get some tees, just raid the local golf club! . . . However, I think that I'd use a spur bit for the new hole. Easier to hit the mark. Also, it was nice to see you working on the type of home that I usually get . . . lotsa coats of paint.

good to plug a hole in a leaking gas tank too, no sparks sweeps and holds tight until you can replace

My daddy use to do the same thing with stick matches and you don't need to drill a hole. You can always use them to make a screw hole tight .

I'm glad you posted this because I literally had this issue with a blown out hole. MDF door. Going to try.
@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
@ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 4 года назад
Don't overdrive the tee. It'll mush out the MDF. Put a little dab of glue in the hole, slightly wet the tee and tap it in until it just fits. Then, take a break. Come back in 20 minutes or so, hit the tee with a punch to eliminate bit drift when drilling the new hole and you'll be golden. Bonus, the tee will hold that screw 1,000 times better than MDF!

LOL. I have this exact problem. I was going to get some sawdust, mix it with glue to try and shove it in the old screw hole. I thought about toothpick with glue as well. But that tee sure seems to fit nicely. Thank you! And @3:23 that really made me LOL.

How to correctly mark the strike position: Have a cheap set of verniers on hand, stick the hole gauge from the door edge to the bolt edge, lock the verniers in this position. Draw a line where the door edge meets the lock jamb when the other installed bolts or latches are engaged and the door is sitting naturaly. From this lock jamb pencil line take the locked verniers and mark a parallel line vertically using the caliper end more towards the center of the jamb, you now have the edge of your thrown bolt marked on the jamb. Now mark the top and bottom of your bolt by throwing the bolt when the door is open, rest the bolt against the jamb amd draw lines ontop and bottom of the bolt, extend these line onto the inside of the jamb to cross your bolt edge line, now place the strike plate over the thrown bolt and remember or measure the play between the bolt and strike. Place the strike plate on the three lock jamb lines indicating the position of the bolt, move the strike plate so that there is a little more play on the opening side of the bolt line so that when the door bends, expands or the jamb expands with weather or is painted the door will move towards the opening direction but the bolt will still engage. Position the strike so that there is more play at the bottom of the bolt so that when the door drops due to hinge where or weather the bolt can still engage to a point. When happy with the strike plate pencil around the inside and outside of your strike plate and continue the install.
@goochball5

Or when you first install the striker only put 2 screws in diagonal to each other so that if you need to move it you still have 2 holes that aren't drilled?
@keithklassen5320
@keithklassen5320 4 года назад
For sure, but then the holes you did screw wont hold as tight if you need to move.

@@keithklassen5320 doesn't matter... you have 2 screws holding super tight and 2 holding pretty tight. Its all a striker needs

Use paint or a marker to mark the end of the bolt, close the door and then close the bolt and it will leave behind a print of where the bolt will go
@charlesjackson1588
@charlesjackson1588 4 года назад
Normally when that happens to a door, the problem isn't with the knob side. The problem is usually with the hinge side. Either the hinges needed to be bent with a knuckle Bender or the frame needed to be screwed in closer to the stud to Pull the door frame back into plumb. That will fix the sagging door and you never have to touch the strike plate
@66howyoudoing12
@66howyoudoing12 4 года назад
Alternatively you can put a small amount of wood glue in the hole providing you didn't drill fully through the wood . Then sand the wood down allowing the dust to go in the hole . That will give it a more wood- like look.

I would use wood toothpicks and glue. I used them for stripped out screw holes in door frames for the hinges. Kids can be rough on doors. Now I want to get some golf tees.
