As someone who was raised in poverty, my parents did the right choice to only have two kids. My father had 7 siblings, my mother 4. They both ended up doing manual low paying jobs because obviously their families couldn't afford education. My parents decided to break the circle of poverty. Now my brother and I are both finishing our degrees and have an obvious better future. I'm forever greatful and my heart goes to the kids that get raised in poverty.

Yes, there is a current decline in PH birth rates. As a Filipina at 33, it’s so hard to explain to your parents/family that I never wanted kids. I’m more of scared to create and raise another human being who will not be physically and emotionally healthy because I cannot fully provide their needs than to be alone in this world. Me and my friends have the same mindset and I’m glad that PH is starting to accommodate these unconventional views. Let us all be responsible parents. To answer the question, I think it's the lack of sex education & lack of support for reproductive health bill & family planning. Being a predominant Catholic/Christian country, birth control pills are discouraged & not enough information dissemination on usage of protection. Teen pregnancies are also celebrated nowadays romanticizing the "blessing" mindset instead of discouraging unprotected sex.

I could observe the decline in the birth rate among women in each generation. My adoptive parents had 9 siblings each. They both came from obviously LARGE families. Unlike their parents, they only gave birth to 4 biological children and then adopted me 20 years later, which now totals 5 children. My four older siblings have a total of 7 children. One, three, one, and two child/ren respectively. So, just by looking at the pattern, there is a striking huge decline in births in each generation. 50% decline each generation in my family. I can also observe this in my friend's families. I have a friend who is an only child while his father has 7 siblings and his mother has 5, I think. So yeah, the decline is happening here too but not as fast as in other Asian nations. Primarily, the reason for this is that most Filipinos still have conservative values which may or may not be fueled by their Religious beliefs (most are Catholics), which then discourage the use of contraceptives. Yes, the lack of sex education and family planning "seminars" of the government is also to blame. Lastly, I would like to point out that most of these women who bore LITERALLY an army of children, came from poor communities. Some if not many of them are also undereducated. I hope that this practice of not practicing the use of contraceptives ends soon. Our country is choking off so many poor, undereducated, ill-mannered citizens.
@runny.nose_
@runny.nose_ Год назад
Well said. The lack or insufficient sex education is probably the root cause of teenage pregnancies here. Our country being "religious" hence, "conservative" avoids discussing these matters with teenagers. Them being curious at that age and probably even more so given the level of hormones at that age then tries learn it thru experience. There's also the stigma around contraceptives because of insufficient sex education.
@afroabroad
@afroabroad 9 месяцев назад
There are two reasons for the slow decline. The first is development China, Korea and Japan are way more developed so of course have lower birth rates. In the case of China they basically worked for generation to make their birth rates plumet and completely changed the culture around the number of kids people want. The second reason why is obviously what you said religion / culture. Compare The Philippines to Vietnam and the fertility rate is close to 1 more baby in the Philippines. But in a decade I'm sure the Philippines will be right at replacement rate.

I don't think most Indonesians are college graduated. Most are probably just middle school (SMP) educated in rural areas and high school (SMA) in urban areas. This is from a 2019 study by OECD titled Education at a Glance: "Bachelor’s programmes are the most popular form of tertiary education among young adults in Indonesia: 12% of 25-34 year-olds have earned a bachelor’s degree, compared to 4% for short-cycle tertiary qualifications." Fortunately, the study also says "Young adults in Indonesia are attaining higher levels of education than before. About 26% of 25-64 year olds have attained upper secondary or post-secondary non-tertiary education compared to 34% of 25-34 year-olds. The same pattern is found at tertiary level: about 12% of 25-64 year-olds have attained tertiary education but among the younger generation, the share has gone up to 16%, indicating a steep upward trend in attainment."

Many still think that even bringing up the topic will encourage young people to go wild. I also volunteered when I was a teen as well as throughout med school abroad and here in the US. So, I've seen A LOT of very young mothers that were under the age of 18. One thing I noticed is people who are from poor families, whether it's from developing or developed nations, are more likely to be engaged in sexual activities at a very young age. Another thing is education. The poor do not have the luxury to be educated when it comes to sex and contraceptives. I'm not saying children from well off families don't get pregnant, they do but the numbers among impoverished youths are higher. The youngest patient I ever had was an 11 year old that was impregnated by a 13 year old.

As a Filipina, I feel like having a child should be a personal choice and not be condemned by anyone, let alone by your family members or peers. I have friends who chose to have kids at an early age due them wanting to see how their children grew up and them having the energy to play with them. The younger generation are more aware about the condition when it comes to sexual health, future generation, education and healthcare. True enough, the Filipino people must step up in solving this crucial problem. I cannot fathom how many of the unfortunate folks here who are economically deprived when it come to job opportunities and family planing. You should be rational enough and CARE enough about your future offspring. DO NOT PLAN ON HAVING KIDS if you're not stable enough, at the right age and capable enough to be good parents who can give your children their needs. Please spare them of the agony.. I hope this serve as a living example for the younger generation and to not let the history repeat itself.

But if you go to the poorest families and areas, you will see the opposite. That's why I always say, the gov't should concentrate on educating the people from those areas about family planning. I hope so. Our young professionals are being wasted by exporting them to other countries. Well, I myself are from that demographic, and the reason why I want to work abroad is better salary. If the Senators of the Philippines allows Constitutional Change and open the economy of the country to more investors, lack of jobs will be a thing of the past, and so Filipinos would not need to look for job abroad to earn high salary. The current Constitution restrict economy in favor of Filipino businessmen. This results to monopoly of key industries such as Telecommunications. The monopoly or duopoly led to lack of competition in that industry and as a result, they have no reason to improve their services and lower the prices. Its's not just the telecommunications, the same case with energy, water, transportation...

I felt disappointed because she already told me that she hates having 6 siblings and living poverty. Too bad she repeated her parents decision. Some of my classmates from public high school also got pregnant when they were between 14-16 years old. Sex education is a taboo. Most of them only learned such thing from the internet.

It was the boomer's generation that mostly have a lot of children. My mom siblings were 7 and my dad's were 11! I can't still gather my thoughts around how did our grandparents managed to raise all of them. I think time and beliefs are changing in today's generation. I'm now turning 30, I got 3 other siblings and none of us have kids yet. I think Filipinos have more understanding about family planning compared from before, where having kids is considered a "blessing" and let the Lord lead their own ways. lol But of course, it still differs from lower social classes that still tends to have more babies, or having teenage pregnancy is getting normalized. It's better we scrap the cultures, old beliefs that wrapped around us and "jailed" us to push to our limits. Religion played a big role in our today's society! Religion controlled the minds of the people believing that every thing is going to be okay without thinking of a rational solution because there should be a higher being that would be working for us. Look at us now. Where is the Philippines in the world stage. We got one of the lowest IQs among ASEAN nations. I can't help but to think that we are still the same "indios" during the Spanish colonial era. I hope things should get better.

The main reasons are religion, education and culture. At the end of Catholic masses we were told to Go and Multiply, so we did 😂. Birth control was frowned upon before and sex education is not taught. Culturally we were also raised with the thinking that when we have children, we don’t need to “raise” them all, just the eldest and he or she will “raise”the younger ones. There have been changes in attitude and perpective in the past few years but the process is quite slow. The sad thing is, you find that people at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder have more children so our government should really focus more on educating that particular sector.

It's an advantage if these young people will get educated, get their degrees and work here in the country and use their skills and talents to contribute to their country. Disadvantage if current problems like lack of jobs due to restricted, communist-inspired economic policies of the mediocre 1987 continue. This will result to young professionals to either forced to work abroad or stay here but not paid well

My family is very supportive about it and they told me that if I can't afford to have kids and support them emotionally, financially, physically and mentally then don't bother having one.
