Why Do I Feel Unstable? How Our Brains and Bodies Are Shaped By a Dysfunctional Childhood

This video explores how our brains and nervous systems adapt to growing up in a dysfunctional environment and what that can look like in adulthood. How does it show up in behaviours, beliefs, thoughts and feelings?
This video explains how Complex PTSD works on a biological level and it covers the Structural Dissociation Model.
An short excerpt from my website on the effects of a dysfunctional childhood on the body below:
childrenofnarc...
When the body is triggered into action by cues in the environment it will go into either hyperarousal (fight or flight) or hypoarousal (freeze or submit). These are known as ‘procedurally learned responses,’ which means they are automatic responses from the system of defences, unique to each individual.
A person’s defence mechanisms are tailored to their life experiences and to what has previously worked best for them in situations where they have felt under threat.
Each part of the personality contributes a defensive strategy, for example, Fight is a hypervigilant soldier on the lookout for danger. Flight rescues us from pain by using addictive behaviours to get relief from painful feelings by ‘turning off’ the body.

Finding a therapist who understands childhood trauma is next to impossible. It takes a long time to accept that you were damaged and that you have been dealing with life in a very dysfunctional manner. One day you finally have to admit the reality of your life. That is an important first step. However, all of your defenses no longer work to protect you from what you buried so well by denial, etc. Then you need help more than ever before. Panic sets in. No help to be found.

Sorry that you can't find the help you need at the moment. There are some specialists in trauma who have books and RU-vid videos you may find useful, if you have not come across them before like; Janina Fisher, Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, Dan Seigel, Allan Schore and Gabor Mate (Mate has a lot of YT vids). Coming out of defences like denial is painful but I would see growth and strength there. There is still pain - trauma is many layered. I hope you can find a therapist soon who knows something of trauma - it would be good to see all therapists have training in this. Take care.

This explains A LOT I'm having nightmares pretty much every night and they're always about flight, violence and losing someone/being left alone I really hope I can get over these at some point bc I tend to wake up mentally more exhausted than I fell asleep ;_; My therapist is trying but it feels like it's just getting worse and worse over the past 2-3 years

Explaining the physiological was very helpful to me for understanding how overwhelmed (and unsafe) I felt in childhood. Micro triggers are still ongoing decades later but at least I know why and can recentre when diassociation or disregulation start.

This is so thorough!!! Thank you for the quality content! I see myself walking through all those responses when triggered, they change day by day and sometimes hour by hour. I stopped to think what's a big trigger and I guess authority figures are huge, I'm terrified of them and they set in motion a bunch of bad thoughts and feelings about myself. Everytime I have to perform next to someone I see as a superior, the survival responses show up. It makes perfect sense since I lived with terrifying parents: father had epic rage fits, mother was described by neighbors as a "officer style mom", grandfather was a grandiose drunk who was proud of his military past, and the soft people in the family were treated as losers that had "something wrong with their heads".

I'm literally in awe of how well, how perfectly described, and just the depth to which every word just detailed exactly who I am. This is my life to the tee. Every feeling, every behavior. It's like existing, but you've never lived. I'm just waiting for it all to be over with. Wounds this deep are beyond repair. If it weren't for meth, I couldn't function. It's just temporary relief, from a permanent situation.

Hi Chris, I am so sorry you are feeling this way and that things are looking so hopeless. I wonder if you would like to have a look at my video - 'How to heal from narcissistic abuse' - it focuses on healing from having a narcissistic parent but it is also is applicable to people who have gone through other forms of trauma like having a parent in addiction, with mental illness, with a personality disorder or their own unprocessed trauma. I know you feel hopeless but maybe it will help in some way?

Yay, All traumas. So wee laid out, laid out in a nice guide book of what is lived experience from all trauma, even the affects of pre verbal wounds combined with all the wounds of the disfunction. The thorns have flowers because we make them.

I needed to learn this at school. This was the information I felt like I needed to understand because of the trauma I experienced...but can't begin now to understand what I could have challenged if I'd had this information at that time. It's the information that could have regulated my knowing and fortified my system in knowledge so that I could defend a system that was fatigued by attempting to defend it...and given me hope in how I could. The gift of hindsight is a terrible sadness. A system overrun to collapse and submit, again to the whims of fate, due to underprivilege and lack of resources. A tale of so many others I'm sure....not to forget war ravaged nations peoples systems by the dominion of megalomaniac power States as well.

You may find this video interesting which talks about the book The Rape of the Mind by Joost Meerloo where he discusses life in the land of 'Totalitaria' (a dictatorship) and how the citizens are affected by living under that kind of regime. I read some excerpts from the book and make comparisons to living under the rule of a narcissist. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4CZQnJqa7aM.html Take care.

wow....a magnificent decription of Meredith Millers experience of Ayhuasca and her insights. MM is a brilliant you tube reference from Inner Integration. I really love the extent of your descriptions in your work. It adds real value to an already valuable detailing of this perspective. Such amazing construction!!
