I remember a saying decades ago which can be applied to both job-seeking and promotions: "The person who is selected is not necessarily the best qualified. It's the person WHO APPEARS TO BE the best qualified". A case for self-promotion tactics.

Can you do a video on being black listed for promotions? It’s not always easy to leave a profession/agency/company if you have been there many years. Do you mend the fences? Wait for people to move on and leave while new faces come in? How do you change the perception about you? What do you do?

The less qualified one at my workplace was promoted due to being the younger brother of the manager’s girlfriend. And the manager had the lack of shame to say there is no favoritism with his decision-making.

I like to listen to what people tell me, like my director who said there is no nepotism in the workplace there (very clearly is), because people tell on themselves. Usually if someone is saying what they do not do, what is not happening or going to happen, you're telling me that this is clearly a rampant thought throughout the company because it absolutely happens all the time. Most people don't have to say what ISN'T true before you even ask.

I have been working at my current job for 30 years and consider myself to be a very good worker. A huge promotion just went to a 23 year old guy who worked there for only three years! He and his family are best friends with the human resource director! It's not what you know! It's who you know!

Hello, Kara. I am so happy I found (and subscribed to) your channel! Soon I will be finishing my bachelor's degree and, afterwards, plan to make a career shift. I have an introverted temperament. However, your videos have shown me I can still be proactive about moving forward in my career. Look forward to browsing your content for more practical advice.

With 40 years experience and being very highly qualified I have noted that capability alone rarely gets you the top. Reasons for me are: 1 diversity in the workplace. Biases against older white males - especially in public sector 2 soft skills, upward stakeholder management usually works 3 clever people are deep thinkers, somethings an action bias works better 3 younger bosses don’t like someone in their team with more experience than they have 4 good presentation skills make a difference 5 unwillingness to leave and move on if opportunities don’t exist 6 resilience to failure is good

I'm desperately trying not to get promoted... I have a very good salary and work life balance and just about enough stress and I really don't want the next grade, but having passed up a promotion three times I'm being told they're not going to even ask in future, they're just going to promote me. How do I stop this, I've said no in absolutely no uncertain terms.

I'm with you as far as avoiding promotion; fortunately no one on my team or in my department likes me, so I've got that going for me! 😂 The purpose of my corporate job is to fund my investments and help provide startup money for my burgeoning real estate and laundromat empire.

I learned that for programmers, having languages and frameworks mentioned in your resume was more important in getting an interview than leadership, critical thinking, problem solving etc even though the latter skills are more important for job success. So totally, yes.

Negative I'm the definition of getting the job due to self confidence. The interview process has dramatically changed to what I've stayed away from "social media". Idk how to record myself or selfie pictures. Although it always seemed over I now stand out as the dinosaur in that its clear if you see a social media person or not. I am not. I r had a job since 14. I'm 32, a medical assistant, with too much to put on my resume. So my resume fits the job I apply (medical field) and I seem to not ve getting past the recording of myself part of resume. I'm close to 100 applications. 30 recordings. It's embarrassing. I've applied at one company UHG. So much they "accidentally " hired me and had to ask me to call to say it was an accident. Heart breaking....
@kararonin

That's a terrible shame Jared. This current climate it's difficult to find a job. Many people have put out hundreds of resumes. It's important you don't give up. Keep trying and stay confident!

The way you described these "less qualified people" doesn't seem right. The less qualified people I know who get the promotion are nothing like that. Nepotism and favoritism are the top if not the only valid reason why...
