@@pizzapizza1460 you are most welcome as a visitor in an orthodox church! it might be all abit new to you going for the first time. You could go to a Sunday Divine Liturgy and sit towards the back of the Church to observe everyone for the first time. You basically just copy them when they stand/sit and when they make the sign of the cross. I also suggest contacting the Parish Priest before going, introduce yourself and tell him your situation and he can help you with whatever you like! Priests are very kind, helpful and approachable 😊

Yes I totally agree. Plus 1 Cor 11 makes it pretty clear. The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, is the word, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil. It is the same word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. But only in vrs 15, where Paul is giving an example from nature is a different word used, "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering." This is different word from the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is thrown around or a mantel that can be thrown around (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around). Cover in the first few verses of 1 Cor 11, should really be translated veil. This is where we get the English saying, "Let your hair down." Becuase during the "sexual revolution" women let there hair down out of thier buns, uncovered their hair and shook it back and forth. Up until only the last two generations woman covered in Church. All of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, the orthodox churches, some Catholics, a lot of African tribes, and Messiniac Beleivers, etc still cover their hair. Here's some verses in the OT about head covering. Hope these help. Isaiah 47:1-2. Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones and grind flour, "put off your veil", strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers. (So as we can see, even virgins were to keep their heads covered and save their hair for their husbands. Otherwise it is like they are showing all their nakedness). Numbers 5:18. Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, "uncover the woman’s head," and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. Also Genesis 20:16 says in the Hebrew Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this is "a covering for her eyes" (to put back on her wedding covering) you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked. From what I understand In Genesis 24:65. Rebekah covers herself because the bridal price has already been paid. 2 vrs later we see Isaac take Rebekah bright away into his tent. There was no wedding ceremony. Her covering herself was an outward show of her marriage to Isaac. Since they were married he was allowed to take her right away into his tent and "uncover" her.

I love the way this bishop explained, also the most beautiful example is the Mother of God herself. I know an old lady that one day, she starting covering her head (in the church), so I asked her why, I knew her for many years and she never covered so, I was curious of what made her do that now. She said: "I had a vision, in which, I was passing the church and I could hear beautiful singing inside, so I wanted to enter and see who sings, but when I tried to enter, an invisible power would not allow me to. I tried a few times but every time I tried, I was stoped be that power so, I started crying and I was wondering why can't I enter the church. In that moment, the Mother of God with the saint of her village (sorry, I can't remember her name) appeared on her side and told her: if you want to enter the church you need to cover your head, look at me, never in my whole life someone saw me uncovered." This is what she told me and since then she always comes to church with a scarf on the head. The beauty of simplicity and humility can not be matched by all the make up in the world.

I've grown up in the church, I never really wore head coverings beaucse I felt like they were ichy and hot, I also was teesed by people in friend groups outside the church which made me feel ashamed. When I got older my mom told me the church vails things that are holy or concentrated by the church (icons, the alter, etc) and that women are holy in a way because they, like the Virgin Mary, can give birth to children. I felt this was so beautiful to think of, so I found scarfs that were lighter and less inchy and worse head scarfs again. I think it is in a way a blessing for women to be able to express their faith outwardly with a head covering.

Reasons for head covering So the very first reason for head coverings is because of the created order. This is the foundation that Paul said “But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (1 Cor 11:3). This is not a cultural argument, but a transcendent argument as the Fathers headship is eternal and unchanging. Because the ordinance of head covering is for certain times (verse 4-6), demonstrating a removable covering. (verse 6) It was to be worn during certain times (prayer and prophecy, or worship). This is not possible with hair. A man (men were instructed not to cover their heads) cannot remove his hair then put it back on when praying is done! “If a woman will not” demonstrates the covering was removable. Because a woman’s hair (length according to the individual) is for her glory. (verse 15) Part of the purpose of the head covering is to veil this glory, not showcase it. Individual glory is the LAST thing any should want in the Presence of God! Because this creates quite a quandary for women who cannot grow “long hair.” Think of Alopecia or some African women. Can they still pray and prophesy in certain settings? Regardless of hair length though, a covering can still be worn. Because of the way verse 6 would read if we substituted “hair” or “long hair:” “If a woman will not [have long hair], let her cut her hair short…” Huh? She would already have done that! The whole point of that verse is to show the shame of her not covering. Because it would be very odd if her symbol of authority in the presence of angels (v10) was one that gave her glory (v15), since the biblical testimony of angelic worship is not glory for angels, but angels showing humility and covering themselves. (Isa 6:1-3) Because the Church agreed with the simplicity and power of this teaching for 1950 years, from the time of Apostles (v16) through the mid-Twentieth Century (1950-60s). We only began to disobey these precepts on a large scale when feminism hit the West like a tidal wave.

I was hoping for a more in-depth treatment of the traditional wearing of veils (recommended by St Paul, as short haircut and removing of hats for men), but it's still good to recall those basic principles concerning the beneficial influence of letting the Tradition of the Church enter into our private lives, so that we can be infused also with the wisdom and mindset of the Church, and be true spokesmen and "martyrs" of the Church in the etymological sense.

According to St Paul men and women each have an iconic function that is: man is the image and glory of God and woman is the glory of man. This iconic function is seen in the manner of the roles of each, the appearance of each and in the relationships between them. The purpose of the iconic function is to manifest the relationship of God to man and make this relationship tangible in our daily lives. The male iconic image is to portray the governance of God over man and the female is to portray the obedience of man to God. Both govern and both obey since this is the relationship of all with God but between themselves a certain order is maintained that we may participate tangibly with God through such relationships and not merely abstractly with the unseen God. This order is manifest within the different levels of relationship between men and women. Mostly notably within the relationship of marriage where we clearly see elsewhere in St Paul the distinct roles of husband and wife in terms of Christ and the Church. However, there is also a public face in terms of permission to exercise public authority and teaching within the Church, the function of the hierarchy, which is permitted to men but not to women because it is God who governs and teaches us and we do not do these things to each other at a merely human level. Thus the male icon is appropriate for the hierarchy because it portrays the divine but the female icon portraying humanity learns in quietness and remains silent in the congregations. Women can govern and teach in private at home or among other women in a convent because man too shares in the governance and teaching of God to men. A married women is expected to exercise these roles in relation to her children. Women can serve the Church as deaconesses but this is a quiet role for ministry to women and it does not perform the same function as a male deacon in leading the congregation and exercising authority over minor orders. Head coverings are the principle iconic form in terms of establishing ourselves as icons. This is because the main relationship aspect between God and man is in terms of governance and headship. Thus, the head is covered or uncovered to demonstrate this. Head coverings are asked of women to go with long hair as a free expression of obedience to God. Obedience is not forced of man to God but freely given by man hence long hair in itself, as a natural aspect, is not sufficient but a head covering is asked to be added in addition to show the free submission of man to God. The head covering is not merely for the wearers humility and obedience, it quietly bears testimony before all to lead all to obedience and humility. Because obedience to God is due at all times head coverings are also worn at all times, particularly in the presence of others, even in the home. Head coverings are most important though in relation to God seen when praying and also if prophesying. In these activities men uncover their heads to show the authority of God and also that mankind will reign with God in synergy. Women though remain covered to show the need of our continuing obedience to share one will with God. The symbolism of head covering is also used by male monastics to show their life of obedience, although they at times uncover their heads in recognition of the male iconic role that they also convey. The symbols and actions are also for the angels who also look upon us. A head covering is supposed to cover the head fully as being completely under obedience to God. Thus, head scarves are appropriately wrapped around the head as are also many eastern forms of head coverings as used in Muslim, Jewish or even Hindu cultures. A small hat on top of the head, particularly one that is decorative, is not as appropriate although better than being without, which in terms of its symbolism is a sign of rebellion against God and of self-will, setting oneself as ruling like God if not done according to the will of God. Just as the relationship between God and man is true in all cultures so too is the requirement of head coverings. The only variation being in the type of material and the cut and shape of the coverings but the use of and minimum extent of the covering is to be applied in all cultures as a uniform aspect of Church culture. Iconic functions are not merely symbolic as signs to teach of something else but there also establish the appropriate form within which Christ becomes present. Because humanity has form in its material aspect then a particular form is required to ensure the true presence of Christ in an incarnate and tangible manner to reflect the reality of our material condition. The material aspect truly participates in our life and existence and this is confirmed that specific material forms are required for mysteries to be manifest, so that the mystery encompasses both spiritual and material aspects of our existence.---Head Coverings by Fr. Patrick

If we follow those who subscribe to the doctrine of women wearing veils, then it can be argued that the most often cited verse is 1st Corinth. 11:5, which states: “But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.” According to many of those who believe women ought to wear veils this verse supposedly implies that a woman’s uncovered head is a woman who does not wear a veil. Such a woman is either dishonoring God, their own physical head or her husband for failing to wear it which implies that they are in disobedience. Some have gone so far as to say it is a sin. Another assumption is that the woman being referred to already has long hair and since they conclude that the covering is a veil then it must be referring to an “additional” covering otherwise it would clash with verse 15 stating that God gave women long hair for a covering. Another conclusion is that women ought to be covered ONLY when praying and prophesying and for men to be uncovered, which would make it seem as though it were something that can be placed on or taken off like a veil. You’ve probably noticed by now it takes several assumptions to reach the conclusion that women ought to wear a foreign object on their heads, despite the lack of evidence. * Does the Bible really give a clear command that women should wear a veil? The first thing that everyone must understand when talking about this topic is that it DOES NOT say the word “veil” or “cloth” or any other physical headwear, as far as the KJV is concerned. It surely mentions that the woman’s head should be covered, and no one disputes this, but it does not say that it should be covered with a veil, a shawl, a bonnet, a cap, or any other specific headwear. The verses in question within 1st Corinthians 11 mention the words, cover, covered, uncovered, and covering, but that does not mean we can translate this to mean specifically a veil, a shawl, a bonnet, a cap, or anything else similar. In fact, it would seem more like an adverb rather than a noun. Nevertheless, the word “cover” is unfortunately interpreted by head covering promoters to mean a veil above all other types of headwear, even if there is no evidence to prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt. To do so would mean that one is trying to read more into the verse than what is stated and is not truly seeking an exegesis of the Scriptures. Some have claimed that they are referring to a physical synthetic head covering because the Scriptures seem to indicate that there are two exclusive conditions to wear one and that is when a woman is either praying and/or prophesying. But does this interpretation stand up to logic? If we were to believe that under certain conditions a woman ought to wear a physical head covering, then it stands to reason that under OTHER conditions a woman should be able NOT to wear one. For example, if you are going to argue that a woman ought to wear a veil because the Bible claims there are two conditions, then it is logical to presume that any other condition would ALLOW them to be without one, like speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues, healing the sick, casting out devils, etc. Now if a head covering promoter should claim that there are MORE conditions, then they admit that there aren’t really “two” conditions thereby nullifying the two-condition argument. The reasoning behind why the “two-condition” argument is important for veil promoters is because if these words were actual conditions, then it would seem as though the covering were something that can be placed on or taken off. So even though it does not literally or EXPLICITLY say anything about putting on or taking off a veil. Veil promotors form this belief based on what they believe to be IMPLIED and not by a direct statement. Many people like to believe this because they ASSUME that praying and prophesying are two conditions instead of seeing them as mere examples. * Praying and prophesying were meant to be viewed as examples, not conditions… Now I can understand how someone can mistakenly conclude praying and prophesying as conditions in verse 5, on the surface, but once you read the rest of the verses in context one cannot reach that conclusion. If they were meant to be conditions then why would Paul say in verse 7… “For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.” If the reason for men not to cover their heads in this verse is because he is the “image and glory of God,” then why assume Paul was saying that there were only TWO conditions in verse 4? Wouldn’t 7 override any supposed conditions? Shouldn’t that make you question that perhaps Paul was just giving a couple of examples? But let’s continue. Verses 8 and 9 give us another understanding that Paul must have been referring to praying and prophesying as examples because he adds the order of creation into the mix. “For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man CREATED for the woman; but the woman for the man.” If Paul states that the creation order has something to do with the reason as to why women ought to cover (in long hair) and men to be uncovered (aka have short hair) then we can conclude that this doctrine must be bound in NATURE. That is to say that it must have taken place since the creation of Adam and Eve and BEFORE the manufacturing of veils or hats, and BEFORE the creation of churches, which is another reason why hair easily fits the mold. This is confirmed when reading verses 13 and 14 when Paul asks you to make an observational judgment that if it is comely (aka pleasant looking) for a woman to pray uncovered (in short hair) and that even NATURE teaches us that a man with long hair is shameful. Why would Paul ask you to think that something as unnatural as a woman without a hat would look off and then say something as natural as long hair would look off on a man? Paul was saying that not being covered in long hair especially while praying looks uncomely and in the same breath he continues and says men with long hair also looks naturally wrong. * So Is the Covering Long Hair or a Veil? ….. If we examine all the verses from verses 4 to 15 without bias, we should at least agree that at certain points the verses are referring to physical heads and hair. Now some have tried to argue that the covering is somehow Jesus or men (some erroneously add husband here as well). But since the passage in 1st Corinthians 11 already states that the man or Jesus are already referred to as the heads one should not mix things up and add that they are the covering especially when this word is referring to something else entirely, Plus it wouldn’t make sense if we were to replace the word covering, covered or uncovered with Jesus, man or husband. So, do the words “covered,” “cover,” “uncovered” and “covering” refer to long and/or short hair or some kind of foreign head covering? Some will even say all the above, but if we carefully examine verse 15 we would be getting a clearer picture of what was being referred to in the earlier verses when it mentions these words. “But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her FOR a covering." KJV So if the covering is long hair, then the words “covered” or “cover” (which are synonymous with “covering”) should be understood as long hair as well. If that’s true, then to be “uncovered” would mean “short hair.” If so, then we can get a better picture of verse 4 when it says that it is shameful or dishonorable for a man to pray or prophesy with his head “covered.” Note the similarity of verse 4 to verse 14 that’s because they are both referring to being covered in LONG hair.

1 Cor 11 makes it pretty clear. The word for covering in 1 Corthians 11:4, 5,6,7, 13, the word for cover is, katakalýptō, from katá, "down, and kalýptō, "to cover"-cover down, to make appropriate (complete), i.e. to wear a veil. It is the same word used for the veil that separated the Holy of holies from the priests. But only in vrs 15, where Paul is giving an example from nature is a different word used, "but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering." This is different word fr9m the others for "cover"= "peribolaion," that which is thrown around or a mantel that can be thrown around (As in when a women tosses or throws her hair around). The English translation makes it hard to understand. The word for cover in 1 Cor should really be translated veil in the first few verses. Only in vrs 15, it is a completely different word, the word means something that is thrown around the shoulders, like a mantel. Which indicates that nature dictates that long hair is something that can be thrown around our shoulders. And even thick long hair can be a sort of "covering" or mantel to cover the bodies nakedness. So long hair could essentially cover a women's bodily nakedness. But not be counted as a covering on her head. This is where we get the saying, "Let your hair down." Up until only the last generation woman covered in Church. All of our grandmothers would have covered in church. This is why the Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, the orthodox churches, a lot of African tribes, and Messiniac churches etc women still cover their hair.

My priest, father Alexander, (in Russia) told us that women neccessarily wearing veils comes from the Church under the Soviet period. That is, in USSR it was mostly elderly women that went to Church and they wore the veils so wearing it in the Church became inseparable in the minds of the people. Then, he also said that when the apostle Paul wrote that women ought to cover their heads he meant that married women should do so because the church he wrote to was a place where many sailors and the like would go stop at and they'd want to find "one night stands". That's how women were supposed to drive these men away, at least it'd one of these things. Father Alexander doesn't therefore jump to a conclusion of women not wearing veils but he's potentially fine with single women not wearing them but because people don't know all of this he stays on the safe side and doesn't preach or ask women not to wear them so that people don't accuse him of liberalism, modernism and stuff (he opposes real liberalism and modernism). What do you guys think about this justification and reasoning?

Islam came 600 years after Orthodox Christianity started so these are not Islamic values. In Slavic tradition, yes we do wear scarves in the temple. Outside it is optional. Not a big deal outside. @@MustafaAli-lb8dq I said Islam came about in the 600s, which is correct, can't disagree with that. It's not necessary to wear a scarf outside of prayer as that is just cultural to do so all the time and so a moot point overall. There are other ways of modesty for women. Therefore Islam has preserved nothing but it's own culture. It's not doing something right, it's just your culture. We only wear scarves in prayer. God is everywhere but we are not commanded to wear one 24/7. Mind your own self and see about your modesty. I'll also add that modesty goes both ways. In Islam you can also pray at home because God is everywhere but its preferred to pray in mosque. Even though I am not deeply relgious but I believe what Islam says that modesty should exist all the time because God is everywhere not just in church. Once again, relgion has nothing to do with culture. Cultures keep evolving but relgion doesnt. If relgion evolves, then that relgion is a corrupted or a lost relgion. That's why we dont believe in Bible. We believe that Christianity was once a true relgion just like Judaism but got lost in the process. People hate us because we refuse to change our religion for the sake of culture. There are so many Muslim women in my country and other places that dont wear hijab but none of them disagree that we should not wear it because you can't change your relgion for the sake of your pleasure. Of you dont want to follow, fine. But dont question God's rules. That's the problem with Christianity. Also let me correct you, Islam as a name came in 600s but the real message existed from the dawn of time starting with Adam. But the message got changed again amd again and again by people. Plus if Quran came 1000s of years ago, then peoplen wont understand. So God revealed different books from time to time. The only surviving Abrahamic Relgions are zorasterism, judaism and christianity. But they are in their corrupted form. That's Islam as a message always existed. I am very appreciative of Orthodox Trinitarian theology. I think it is perfection. I am not comfortable as a woman in the Orthodox Church. I approached it in the early nineties, and counseled with an Orthodox priest, attended many beautiful services, but discovered very soon that I didn’t belong. I believe a woman has to be raised in the Church to be comfortable in the constraints and obvious subservience to men, regardless of the example given of worshiping the Theotokas (there is only one of her, after all.) There’s no place for a woman who is independent from men to convert honestly into the Orthodox Church, which broke my heart at the time. But, nonetheless, I love Orthodox Trinitarian Theology and carry it in my heart. I don’t blame the Church, I don’t denigrate it, I just know I can’t belong. It is a curious paradox, that a method of worship so elegantly attached to the very root of God’s revelation to us, the very root, must by its nature also retain the attitudes of gender superiority and push away a consciousness that cannot be at peace with that particular Stone-Age-Bronze Age-Iron Age mind set. When I listen to you and your cohorts discuss your exquisite apologetics and survey your bibliographies, I don’t recall ever seeing a woman’s contribution. I have seen a woman’s contributions to Trinitarian thought from a Catholic source. Her premise was how the Transcendent God becomes Immanent through universal personhood. She deployed the language better than I just did as I read it over a decade ago and cannot quote her well. But as much reading about the Trinity as I did, which was as much as I could find at the time, I don’t recall women contributing to the Trinitarian discourse on the Orthodox side. But how could they? They aren’t allowed to speak or teach in Church, so how could they find a voice in academics unless they were so pushy and assertive they could ignore the pressure to return home to their fathers or husbands. The two things go hand-in-hand. One cannot be critical of a reality of the Church. I can either belong or not belong. It is a lifelong sadness for me that I could not belong. I recall that I couldn’t even be worthy to set foot on Mount Athos because of being female. You have to be raised and have your inferior position ingrained in you from the cradle to be in honest alignment with that mindset.

Dear Augusta, your comment has touched me so that I decided to try and give my reaction to it, hoping it can do some good and be of some spiritual help. If not, forgive me and may God assist you and bring you peace in Christ. Firstly, have you considered the fact that this "Stone-Age-Bronze Age-Iron Age mind set" you talk about is simply the mindset of the Scriptures given to us by God through the Prophets and the Apostles? I think the reason why you have this feeling of "non belonging" to the Church - which is indeed a very sad and grieving situation - is because your socio-cultural presuppositions are not of the Church, but of a secularized "modernist" viewpoint which is not in adequacy with what God has taught us through Revelation and Tradition. You are very correct to say that "there’s no place for a woman who is independent from men to convert honestly into the Orthodox Church", because our God and our Fathers have never taught this outlandish idea that a woman could really be what God wants her and created her to be while being (delusively) "independent from men". The book of Genesis teaches us the beauty of the creation of Adam and Eve, and how Adam, feeling lonely on his own, asked for "an auxiliary", someone to be in union and communion with and sweep away loneliness of heart (we could say a kind of ontological loneliness due to lack of communion). God granted Adam what he wished and created Eve from Adam's very flesh, which has a very deep and beautiful meaning, and must be believed in the literal as well as in the symbolical sense (our Fathers, in their exegesis of Genesis, always combine the two and do not oppose them). What the Bible teaches us is that a woman really "independent from men" can only be a profoundly sad and unhappy woman, in her heart of hearts, because she denies the very ontological meaning of her being : to be a companion to men, to be one flesh with her husband and accept in all humility to observe obedience towards him. St Paul's "Epistle to Ephesians" is also a very deep and important revealed text that teaches us the meaning of marriage and the hierarchical relationship between wife and husband (as related to the hierarchical relationship between the Church and Christ). But it should always be emphasized that, in the true Christian view, hierarchy does not necessarily imply oppression and gratuitous domination (so that "machismo" is rejected along with "feminism" as both being a falling away from God's will). At the same time when St Paul asserts that a wife should be obedient to her husband's will as the Church is to Christ's, he adds also that a husband should love his wife just like Christ loves the Church. Thus the hierarchy of function between man and woman in family and society is based on obedience and love in synchronicity, and not one without the other : love without obedience quickly ends up in anarchy and selfishness, while obedience without true love is worth nothing and only dries the heart and engenders hate and resentment. There is a profound mystery of love at stake in this holy equilibrium of obedience/humility and love, and we should all strive to protect it and live by it, according to God's will. Yet, there is another way proposed to women as to men to live a life in Christ : virginity and monasticism, which are also holy and good, though they cannot be imposed on anyone and must remain a personal call (even for future clergymen who do not desire to live a family life). This angelic way of life, as well as the attainment of personal sanctity, is open to both man and woman, regardless of their necessary and God-willed differing hierarchical function in society and family. Mount Athos is an exception in the history of the Church and an exception that gives beautiful spiritual fruits even for women (many feminine monasteries depend from an Athonite monastery and are blessed by this spiritual bond), it is unfair to only take an exceptional case to judge the Orthodox Church as a whole, as if there were no beautiful feminine monasteries as well, giving beautiful spiritual fruits and examples of saintly women living in Christ. One can attain sanctity and perfect deification in Christ without setting foot on Mount Athos, so it should not really be a sufficient reason to depart from the Church of Christ. Mount Athos must be humbly accepted and regarded as an exception willed by God and the Mother of God and providing us with many holy men changing our lives and praying for us all night and day. "You have to be raised and have your inferior position ingrained in you from the cradle to be in honest alignment with that mindset". No, actually you just have to question the very presuppositions in which you were raised (which are maybe not from God - like the outlandish idea, to a genuine Christian ear, that women should have the same function as men in society and family) and have faith in the Holy Scriptures and the Apostolic Tradition. Maybe it's what has been "ingrained in you from the cradle" (or from your own socio-cultural background) that is a problem in God's eyes, being in contradiction with His Word and the Church He founded on the rock of faith. There cannot be true Christianity where there is not complete reverence toward Revelation and Tradition, a sincere fear of God and love for his laws and commandments. Maybe this sincere fear and love are no longer "ingrained" in us in modern society, precisely because those new values are being put forward since a few centuries by ungodly people, mostly Atheists or free-masonic Deists who do not care about the commandments of God (take a look at the History of Feminism and its view of Christianity and religion in general, and you will be edified on this point). The problem you mention is not a problem that the Church of Christ has, but a problem that you personally have with Christianity proper, because of your own socio-cultural presuppositions, when it comes to the functional hierarchical relation between man and woman (which does not hinder the ontological equality of dignity before God and salvation/deification). It is a beautiful thing to study theology and the Trinity, and to admire the fullness and perfection of the Divine Wisdom on this topic, but it remains useless if in the end you do not wish to live your life by the standards given to us by this very same Trinity through the Scriptures. Theology cannot be divorced from life, and Christianity cannot be divorced from Revelation and Tradition (in the holy sense of the word, not mere "custom", but what has been handed down from Christ to us through apostolic teaching - for example the "male-only" priesthood, which is clearly instituted by God in the "Exodus" and "Leviticus"). "It is a lifelong sadness for me that I could not belong", this is a touching confession and it proves you really want in your heart of hearts to be part of the Church of Christ and live in communion with it, because it is the abode of Life in Person, and a spring of grace. This is what lead me to write this long comment : that you may maybe understand more deeply what is at stake here, and, God-willing, convert your heart to the full Christian doctrine and worldview (for it is a fully coherent and all-encompassing worldview given by Christ and the Fathers of the Church, not just a few notions impacting only our intellectual life, but a mystery that concerns the whole man and the whole woman, in private as well as in public life, in intellectual as well as in spiritual and physical life, and that's the beauty of it - that te whole man as well as the whole woman might be transfigured by the life in Christ, which is also life in and by the Church). I will end with my own testimony : even though a man, I must say I wasn't raised our "ingrained" with anything that would prepare me for this life in the Church I'm talking about, but nevertheless I have been changed deeply by it, accepting to change my worldview (that is included in the process of true conversion), my presuppositions, and welcome as holy and sacred the Revelation of God and the Spirit-filled writings of the Fathers. I am personally deeply touched and moved as well by these pious Orthodox women who accept in all humility of heart the traditions of the Church without judging them according to foreign standards, but seeing everything that is prescribed to them as a tool for salvation and sanctification. I am much more moved by this humility in imitation of Christ and the Mother of God than by the usual pride and selfishness displayed today by most of the women in my surrounding, taking everything for granted, talking down to men as a habit and falling in ridiculous indignation for the slightest remark. Honestly, "modern women" have lost all spiritual beauty to me, and if they remain that way, in rebellion and in "superbia" (which is the mark of Satan), they will never be of any deep assistance to any man and will completely lose what makes them precious and necessary in the eyes of God : examples of humility, tenderness, purity, obedience, and so forth, all that men need, truly need in order to find spiritual balance in their lives ; and God meant it to be so, and he "saw that is was good". I can say all this while having been raised in a modern Western family with Atheist and hedonist left-wing values, and as a deeply "Romantic" heart who has nonetheless undergone a sincere conversion to Orthodoxy and has never regretted it. I hope the same for you, that you may live in that wonderful grace the Church dispenses to us, when we truly choose to live by its holy standards. May God bless you and guide your steps!

I don't feel any of that. I don't feel subservient to men in a general sense. I cover my head out of submission to God, not man. We all have to humble ourselves. Everyone is subservient to someone in Orthodoxy. We all are to be in submission to God ultimately. Men aren't allowed in strict convents, keep in mind. In our Parish women do many things, running the Parish basically like a household like a wife should.

Yes, the Theotokos is one. She is a model to all Orthodox, men & women. We can never be grateful enough for her, as our salvation came through her--through her we have Life, Truth, the Way, in other words, through her, we have our God, our Lord, our Savior, our Life. But we don't worship her.
@lornadoone8887

Submission is not subservience. Christ is our example, who freely submits to the Father, but is in no way inferior or subordinate to the Father. Ephesians 5 mentions mutual submission of the members of the Body to one another before describing wifely submission to a husband. We are all to submit to one another in love. In other places, the Epistles mention rules for decorum when women are “prophesying” in Church, so “silence” is not absolute, but has a context. Context is important. Women were to remain silent in the context of the Liturgy (apart from when those called to prophesy exercised their gift) because there is a need for order and decorum in the services. Women sometimes chant the Epistle or OT readings in my parish. We sing in the choir and can be elected to serve on the parish council. Ultimately all who serve in the Church-men and women-do so only with a blessing from their Bishop and Priest. Our Hierarchs are those who will have to give an account before God for the souls entrusted to their care and whether what they are teaching is correct.

I have been told and I have read that back in the days of Jesus women wore head scarves for the sun not for religion. I do not wear a scarf as it is not required in church. Also in Cyprus women cannot go in a church with trousers on they are given a scarf to put around their waist to cover the trousers they are wearing. There have been too many things being introduced in our churches by the religious hierarchy. We want people to go to church and feel welcomed.

We have boxes of scarves in the narthex for women and basic skirts too. Women and girls are not permitted to the Holy Eucharist without a headcovering. It is submission to God to wear one in the temple as we are His handmaidens. What is precious is veiled in Holy Orthodoxy. Sadly modernism crept into certain jurisdictions and they don't enforce it. Why do women want to be like men? I don't get it.

The title should be “Why do some Orthodox women wear a veil?” I am an Orthodox woman, and I know very many Orthodox women who do not wear a veil. This is quite hurtful to those of us who do struggle spiritually in the Church. To be treated as though we are not Orthodox, because we do not follow this tradition is rather judgmental. I have lost much and have sacrificed much in order to be Orthodox. Do not throw that sacrifice in the trash because I am lacking 1 sq ft of cloth. I am quite certain Jesus does not disregard my struggle. In the culture I come from, a woman covering her head is very disrespectful to the woman. She is held as lesser and seen as a “problem” and thus covers her head. I do what my priest allows, and what the priest before him allowed, and what the priest before him allowed. Those priests follow/followed their bishops in this. I am Orthodox along with all those women who do cover their heads.

But he didn't answer about why women wear a head covering in church. This comes from St Paul's 1 Corinthians 11:1-16. A commenter - link below - stated that the married woman does this to honor her husband (a man is bare headed to honor Christ). For a modern woman, the need to do something or to wear something that a man is not required to do or wear will bear scrutiny from women. The commenter is Roman Catholic but I think the Orthodox supporting this practice would not have any issue with the approach given. In the cited verses, here is the heart of the matter, "That is why a woman ought to have a symbol of her submission to authority on her head, because of the angels." The "That" is from the prior verse that woman was created for man and not the other way. But where do the angels figure in? No trivial matter, St Paul says, "because of the angels". What do the angels have to do with it? The (Orthodox) Jews then and now must wear head coverings when they pray (men and women). Christian men must NOT wear a hat - this is clearly to distinguish Christian men from Jewish men. St Paul says it is to honor Christ. But women, in St Paul's view, to make the angels happy (?), must wear a head covering. That is supposed to make sense? To me, it is artificial and made up. The link author also related the matter of a wife's submission to her husband to this matter, citing Ephesians 5:21-33. And, an unmarried woman is subject to her father, so she must also wear the veil, so the practice has been, but St Paul doesn't say this. The use of a hat or veil/scarf has fallen off in recent years. This should not be a issue with an Orthodox woman, either way. I can't imagine that Christ would care one iota what a Christian woman wore. It is a silly, unimportant matter. completechristianity.blog/2018/12/04/on-veils-for-christian-women/
