There's a war on the car... Or is there? Maybe it's a war on bikes? In this video I break down why the tensions between car drivers and cyclists is so bad.

Here's an idea. Make it a legal requirement that bicycles have licence plates. This way riders can be held responsible for their conduct. They can be photographed on red light cameras. Identified for dangerous riding etc. By holding the riders to the same road laws as drivers, drivers may be more sympathetic. Also require bike riders to complete a basic proficiency test so they know how to ride safely, know the road laws and become less of a hazard to other cyclists and drivers. The main gripe I hear from drivers is that the rules don't seem to apply to cyclists. By introducing accountability for the cyclists and ensuring the drivers know about it, will probably go a long way to reduce animosity.
@LeahandLevi
@LeahandLevi 4 года назад
@@maxximumb I agree that a legal framework would be helpful but remember that those laws actually do already exist. I also worry that if you start putting limitations on who can ride a bike those vulnerable populations who don't have money for a car or access to one will be even further shut out from getting around the city. But still an interesting idea.

@@LeahandLevi I'm not from the US and there are very few laws to regulate cyclists here. The limitations I would suggest are just a competency test, showing that the cyclist understands the road signs, lane markings and other rules of the road and are able to control a bicycle safely. On passing the test you'd be given a licence number plate that must be displayed on the bicycle. The test could be administered at accredited cycle shops or your local police station for a nominal fee. I'm not trying to restrict access to bicycles, just ensure that people know what they should be doing on a bike and can ride safely.

Maxx B License tag for a bicycle? They not allow on the same lane as a car. It’s frustrating enough we have atv and dirt bike bombarding the drive way. Unless you have a electric bike that can move 40mph we don’t mind. You’re in the way and no one like to slow down because some idiot move out of the bike lane.

I can sooo relate to this!! I live in Copenhagen where the majority of people do not own a car but a bike, because it's the cheapest, easiest and least time consuming in regards to transportion in Copenhagen. I was on exchange to Western university in London, Ontario and thought I would ride a bike to campus. Oh boy that was crazy! You can not help to jump a bit when a monster pickup truck drives really fast past you. In Denmark, we have separated bike lanes like the sidewalk is also separate from the car lanes in Canada, so we are only in contact with cars when there is no way around it. This makes it safer for everyone.

Hi Levi :) I'm a Korean living in north Texas. Half of my life I lived in the U.S. and half I grew up in S.Korea. I lived in CA, FL, GA, and even in Wyoming. One thing that makes me feel guilty living in the US is the garbage/trash collection system. Here, you throw everything in one huge bin and the garbage truck will collect it. On the other hand in S. Korea, garbage separation is mandatory and starts from individual level. Every household has a bin for plastic / plastic wrappers / metal / glass / paper / food waste / and the facility will come and government managed facility will collect it on different days. So much easier to recycle. People fanatically separate waste according to the material what it is made of. Unrecyclable items go into garbage disposal plastic bags which are sold by the government in different sizes(5L,10L,20L,50L). If people use different type of plastic bags, the garbage will not be collected. It makes people be more conscious about creating waste. Because if you have bulky wrapping, you will have to separate it and throw it away at your expense. At super markets, plastic bags are not free in S. Korea. You need to pay a small amount for each plastic bag(about 5 cents). So people rather carry a reusable bag to put in the grocery. :) I just wanted to share small tips in life we can do to save the world:) thanks Levi!

My town is really just starting to build cycle lanes. The ones that exist are awesome, and really get me wanting to cycle around town.... But then they randomly end. I'll be cycling on a separated cycle path, all is fine and dandy, then BAM it's back on the road with cars, no shoulder, and a tiny sidewalk that i'd be screwed on if there was one person on it. That kind of stuff makes me anxious, and i'm sure cars suddenly having a bike path end next to them doesn't make them feel comfortable either.

Yes, cities should be designed for people, not cars. Transportation by bus, bike or foot should be made as easy and attractive as possible. @@UnoRunescaper I quarantee you that if you go by per capita of "assholes on the road" and you compare bicyclists and drivers/motorcyclists. the rate of assholes is going to be higher wih cyclists. just for the simple reason that you cant identify them that easily, they haven't spent thousands on a license to ride their bicycle that they can lose. and they are not targeted and fined as heavily as other road users. if motorcyclists and drivers didin't need licenses and plates it would be a different story, but because you can get away with more stuff on a bicycle, of course they will do it. I mean I remember when I was 14 and used a bicycle I couldn't careless about the rules of the road.

Drivers often accuse bikers of driving erratically - sometimes that's true but often car drivers don't understand that the road is very different for bikers. Bikes have a very high point of blanance and only two thin tires (crazy I know). It's easy to tip over, potholes and uneven roads bother bikers more and did you know that the markings on the street can be slippery? Better avoid it or bike slowly as to not crash. That is of course no concern for cars so drivers think bikers are being obnoxious on purpose when really all they want to do is bike savely on crappy roads.

It's not that people on bikes get in the way, but rather they don't follow the rules of the road like blowing through stop signs and turning left on red and such. Bikes must follow the same road laws as cars, but the majority of people on bikes don't do this.
@k-rj740
@k-rj740 4 года назад
*Bikes must follow the same road laws as cars, but the majority of people on bikes don't do this.* That is not what any study on this topic show to be the case. There are several online that one can look at, and they all show the same pattern, and the pattern is that drivers are no better or worse when it comes to following the rules on the road. (Cyclist might be more prone to cycle on red, but drivers catch on easily by using their phones while they drive) Here are a few such studies and research: *New study shows that "scofflaw cyclists" don't break the law any more than drivers* "It is a standard trope that cyclists ignore red lights, blow through stop signs and generally ignore all the traffic rules that govern cars and are not very nice to law abiding pedestrians either. People on bikes are often told that "If cyclists want legitimacy, they should obey the rules of the road”. And indeed, a new study find that cyclists do break the rules fairly often. But guess what? So do drivers and pedestrians, just as often." "When it comes to rule-breaking bicyclists, one popular opinion is that if bicyclists want to be taken seriously as road users, they need to obey the rules of the road like everyone else. Our survey results and the literature review both suggest that drivers break the rules of the road just as much, if not more, than bicyclists. The other common argument is that cities need to step up bicycle law enforcement to improve safety. While bicyclists are certainly not immune from causing harm, the literature suggests lower societal costs and safety risks associated with lawbreaking bicycling as compared to lawbreaking driving. Drivers speed, roll through stop signs, park in bike lanes, and run lights that have just turned red while still considering themselves to be law-abiding citizens. Despite research showing a causal link between such driving behaviors and increased crash rates, injuries, and fatalities, society continues to see these behaviors as rational decisions within our transportation system, other than in the relative minority of places that take Vision Zero as more than a buzzword. Our results suggest that bicyclists seem to be making the same rational choices." www.treehugger.com/bikes/new-study-shows-scofflaw-cyclists-dont-break-law-any-more-drivers.html *Cyclists are just as law-abiding as drivers* www.spokesman.com/blogs/transportation/2015/jul/15/cyclists-are-just-law-abiding-drivers/ The following general conclusions can be made based on the evidence described above: •The majority of cyclists (84%) obey red traffic lights. content.tfl.gov.uk/traffic-note-8-cycling-red-lights.pdf *Only 1-in-8 cyclists run red lights says study of 60 Irish junctions* irishcycle.com/2016/05/26/only-1-in-8-cyclists-run-red-lights-says-study-of-60-irish-junctions/ *Cyclists are a bunch of scofflaws!* *Response:* No more than anyone else-and you don’t like us when we follow the rules. *The Lowdown:* Yes, cyclists break traffic laws. So do redheads, Methodists, white suburban dads, and municipal bus drivers. We-people, that is-break traffic laws every day by bike, foot, and car. For instance, a study by the Society of Automotive Engineers found that in 2012, the nation’s 200 million drivers [now 210 million] use their turn signals just 48 percent of the time. www.bicycling.com/training/a20042771/the-best-responses-to-anti-cyclist-claims/ *Stats on Cycling Through Red Lights* The report concludes A total of 7502 cyclists were surveyed across all of the sites. Of these, an average of 16% violated red lights, whilst the remaining 84% obeyed the traffic signals. Therefore it can be concluded that the majority of cyclists do not ride through red lights. However, the 16% that do must be discouraged from ignoring traffic signals. *Accidents at Red Lights.* Quite revealing is the statistic “Of pedestrians injured in London in a collision caused by red light jumping only 4% involve cyclists, whereas 71% occur when a car driver jumps a red light and 13% when a motorcyclist does. As an organisation representing those two road user groups, CTC suggests IAM ought to call for more road traffic policing to enforce traffic laws, rather than highlighting red light jumping by cyclists.” CTC From media coverage, it often feels running red lights is primarily a violation by cyclists. But, just 4% of accidents suggests that the danger posed by motor cars is much greater. cyclinginfo.co.uk/blog/4756/cycling/stats-red-lights/

But being on the sidewalk you risk evil glares from pedestrians. I've never had one say anything to me but I feel them judging me. 😭 A while back someone even wrote in to the paper about cyclists on the sidewalks.. complaining about those who fly past dangerously. I always slow down when there are pedestrians, but I still feel judged. The reality is just that I don't feel totally safe when I'm on busy roads. I know I was really happy with my campus because they allowed all forms of transportation. :) And I have found that the west coast as a whole is better about allowing other forms of transport than east coast in my experience. It's just a mater of getting people interested, educated, and getting rules/laws/ordinances revoked that are unnecessary and often times dumb. It's possible but it takes changing minds and enlightening minds.

@@MariahRayneArt I agree. I would add that often it's not really a "hate" but misunderstanding that cause a fear. So many times when I got a driver screaming at me it was because they got scared, not because I did something wrong but simply because they weren't paying attention and weren't expecting a cyclist. The immediate reaction most drivers have to cyclists is fear/anger. I've had experience were I was riding on a cycling street (streets that are off the main roads that are designed to be much safer for cycling) and from no where a car would drive to me to offload their days frustration on me; really the worst feeling of vulnerability. I started riding with a kids bike seat; it's been successful to eliminate drivers road rage at me for no reason (I really didn't deserve any of the anger I've got through the years)

I hate when people don't understand that bikes need to follow the same rules as cars. They need to stop for stop signs and ride on the same side of the road. Like do people understand how dangerous it is to be on the wrong side of the road. In the city I just moved to it's illegal for bikes to ride on the sidewalk in business districts. And as a pedestrian I've almost been hit several times. Part of the issue is probably that we are though to ride a bike when we are 4 by our parents and not required to take a test like driving a car. So we don't actually know what the rules are. Like signaling. In North America we think of riding a bike as something that doesn't really have any rules. Because maybe my parents say I should wear a helmet but I didn't know there was/wasn't a law requiring it. The state I live in also requires bike registration with the money from that going towards building more bike lanes. But no one would have ever told us mandatory bike registration was thing. Because we are taught that bikes are "toys". Also no clarification on whether I need to register my unicycle or not.... My husband registered his bike though.

UK user: I like bikes, but trying to pass them on narrow uphill roads with speed bumps is a bit of a pain, and some of them are a bit unpredictable e.g. suddenly cutting across a line of moving cars. I get round Hereford and Bath (down the university hill it's the cars holding the bikes up) all right on a bike but I'll admit in many places you have to be fast. Merging into the correct lanes and taking roundabouts needs a bit of pedal power. Then you can relax and keep to the edge when the road widens, gathering some puff for the next light. Also remember to go down the gears before the light, so you're not trying to crawl off in your 52-11 lol.

There is always plenty of room to pass me safely. The thing that I notice is that the idea that I'm slowing anyone down on my bike is kinda busted by me catching up to the same cars that pass me at the next traffic light. Then again I ride in a city, and not on suburban streets that are 45 mph. All my streets are 20 or 25 mph (35 at the fastest and there's a bike lane).

A majority of kids get to school or around town by bicycle, and we have a lot of people training for races or just trying to stay in shape. But I notice people don’t mind the kids, and they do mind the athletes! Which I think is an interesting conflict. It should be noted that the city has been establishing divided bike lanes and paths upon what has already existed, so there is obvious support here. However I lived in Tyler Texas for a short time, and they didn’t have bike lanes OR sidewalks. I could only drive and I found that miserable.

Infrastructure being blamed for the cars Vs bikes is wrong. That is just like removing a heater from the house because a person keeps getting burnt when they touch it. The issue is more deep, it is that people are socially under too much stress to live like the "Jones" and want everything. This creates anxiety and stress to the point that not a lot of drivers and riders have consideration of others anymore. If people were less stressed, they would soon become more courteous, then infrastructure as it is currently would suffice for both bikes and cars.

I ride my bike on sidewalks if there is a sidewalk. 1/8 people who I see in their car, whether it’s while I’m passing them in my car or they’re passing me on my bike is on their phones. Not Bluetooth, but eyes on the screen, screen in their lap. Drivers swerving around the road is common in my dying industrial railroad town in Pennsylvania, and sidewalks are *never*, ever used. Never. I mean that; never. There’s concrete there, that’s never used, and I have no care getting killed by a mom in her needlessly massive SUV checking to see if their kid texted them back. So I ride on the sidewalk, and here I am; breathing, nobody’s hassle, and still riding when I can. Though I need to take my bike in because the steering was destroyed by a pothole on the road a few months ago far worse than I want to even try and fix on my own.

This is why people ACTUALLY hate cyclists: I live in rural Ohio where we have an amazing park system that offer amazing paved places for cyclists to go and ride but they are rarely ever used. Instead, the cyclists choose to ride in large groups clustered together on narrow winding back roads, which makes it incredibly sketchy to safely overtake them at times. That is why I personally can't stand them. We have so many places for them to go ride but it seems they always choose the worst areas to go and ride rather than using the areas made for them. What cyclists have to understand is that they don't only put their own well being at risk when they choose to ride on narrow winding roads but they are also putting the health and safety of the motorists on the road at risk as well and we didn't sign up for that. It's one thing to put your own life on the line but it's another when you are making that decision for everyday motorists, that's not fair. P.s. I don't actually hate cyclists I am just simply explaining the gripe that people in my area have against them. No one out here uses bikes to commute, or extremely few do at least. I am not talking about cyclists across the country or cyclists in general. I know that the argument I posed only represents a certain segment of cyclists. No matter whether you're a cyclist or not, enjoy your day!😀✌

One reason for avoiding park paths for training in groups, is that they are going quite fast. When riding in parks, there is often a mix of all kinds of users there. People strolling, people with dogs, with kids. This makes it too dangerous to ride there in groups doing a high speed. On these back roads, is there much traffic? How good are these riders to cooperate? Many groups of riders where I come from have ways to communicate with each other and with the drivers, to make passing as safe and easy as possible.
