Why Do People... Hate the Magic Kingdom?

Is the Magic Kingdom a bad park? People certainly seem to think so. If you compare it to other castle parks, whether it be Disneyland or the versions in Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong or Shanghai, I can see why people might prefer those for a number of reasons. As someone who prefers Disneyland to magic Kingdom though, even I think that a lot of criticism for the park is overly harsh and contrarian, overlooking the park's strengths, which there are a significant amount of. Magic Kingdom many not have the best versions of rides like Big Thunder Mountain or It's a Small World, but they are definitely unique. I also think that the park has the best versions of certain rides, which includes the Jungle Cruise, the Haunted Mansion and, divisively, even Space Mountain. This isn't to mention all the exclusive attractions to the park like the Hall of Presidents or the Carousel of Progress. So, weirdly, I'm going to be dedicating a video just to defending the Magic Kingdom, because it really does deserve to be treated better than recent discourse has chosen to do.

I think the hate is that it should be the best Disney park in the world. There is no excuse for building a worse version of a ride here, it has the biggest crowds, most space and brings in the most money of any Disney park. It should be treated like the flagship park with interesting and unique attractions that are the best of disney.

Problem is that will be impossible to ever achieve. Disneyland will always be the flagship Disney park for the simple reason it is the only park that Walt designed and stepped foot in. Magic Kingdom is cheapened because today’s imagineers do not put their best into it. Slapping an IP on something is just that. And Disneyland is cheapened for the same reason. If it weren’t for the fact of its history with Walt Disney it would be far inferior.
@an4189
@an4189 5 месяцев назад
@@davids6898 I agree to an extent on the history view of the parks, but economically and publicly (especially internationally) magic kingdom should be the most important park. However, even if it is an IP ride they put in the park, it should be something other parks look at and think we would love that in our park.

The undeserved popularity of Magic Kingdom is exactly the reason Disney doesn't feel the need to make it better. People will go to Orlando no matter what because they make it a weeks long vacation so there's no need to give 100% on it. Whereas Anaheim is mainly a locals park, so Disney feels pressure to make it as good as it can be or the locals will take their money elsewhere.

I wouldn't say the Magic Kingdom is a bad park, but the experience of going there is NOT at all what it once was. Poor maintenance, overcrowding, and Genie+ are all very real reasons why many people that go there feel as if it's a ripoff.

Finally visited Disneyland this year as I have only visited Disney World since my youth. I have to say, Disney puts more love into Disneyland. It was cleaner, more detailed, and better ride experiences. The dark rides are a major plus to Disneyland as those are the soul of the park. When Magic Kingdom began removing those rides, it destroyed the charm it once had. Loved the fact many of the hollywood studios rides were in Disneyland. Hollywood studios alone is wasted money.

With the opening of Epic Universe, I think people will be putting the Universal Parks at the top of their list - and only visit WDW if they have time and money left over. Anybody that frequently visits both universal and disney knows that universal isn't even close to the quality of disney in any way... Except if you're talking about sickening screen rides and underwhelming rushed theming. But universal fans keep making the mistake of pretending, like universal even tries to achieve the same quality....They don't... their whole thing is Just to get the things open as fast as possible and then change them out every few years. They have surprisingly few legacy attractions that anybody cares about after the first few years.

While I agree that Epic Universe will take a good chunk of Disney's market share, to say that people will ONLY go to Disney if they have time left is...delusional. The target audience of the fantastical and thrilling Epic Universe is very different than the target audience of Disney's princess and cutesy theme. Let's also be aware that Epic Universe is a 2 day at most singular park, there will be plenty of time for family's on week long vacations to split their time between the 2 parks.

The hate is overblown imo, but I can see why people don’t like it as much. When you compare it to Disneyland, it’s clear that’s got a little more love from the company than Magic Kingdom. The rides primarily, but also just how preserved it’s been, even in its theming. Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland is pretty boring when you see how Disneyland has theirs. Also, the crowds have gotten so insane as of late. Last time I went I only got to do like 5 or 6 rides tops 💀 as a kid we coulda gotten the whole park done in a day, but not anymore. So poor crowd management is another issue… I still enjoy all the neat little details tho, like the ones you pointed out here :)

Here's hoping the huge expansion will help solve crowds, but according to rumors, the "largest expansion in MK history" is only going to have like four rides, one of which is a clone from California, and then they're also potentially rethemeing the entirety of Frontierland and Liberty Square, which would close off a huge chunk of the park, AND they may be filling in the Rivers of America, which gets rid of two attractions right there. I have no clue how closing rides and spending a decade just to build four is gonna solve capacity issues lmao

As Rolly Crump said, “It was a lot of good architectural pieces, but I looked at that and thought to myself, ‘What the hell is going on here?’ Disneyland has charm. Disneyland freaking hugs you and kisses you! When you go to Disney World and you see the castle, you want to genuflect ... and that disturbed me.” While I don’t agree with him fully, I do think MK is really missing that personal touch, and the good qualities are ruined by the horrendous overcrowding.

Disneyland AND Disney world seriously need a park capacity limit, and to just start turning people away or saying "PARK IS NOW FULL, TRY AGAIN IN 4 HOURS" - There is not enough space, and even if there was no ride could run enough to get 15,000 people through in a few hours. There seems to be a serious lack of communication and common sense from Disney Parks and corporate. It's going down fast.

But I answered this question before even watching the video and you never explored the #1 reason in my mind: the crowds!!! I don't know when you got your b-role, but I cannot remember the last time I was in MK without it being shoulder to shoulder. When you add all of the context of your video together, and then wait in line on average 45-60 minutes to experience any of said attractions, plus an hour wait to get your hotdog at Casey's Corner, then a 30 minute wait to find a table to eat, then another hour wait for an attraction, plus a 20 minute wait to buy your souvenir, and a 30-60 minute wait to get on transportation simply to leave the park: you've realized that you've spent close to $200 to dedicate more than 80% of your day to waiting in lines. It leaves me with a feeling or defeat and resentment, and that is why MK is my least favorite park. But Hate?? I don't think I'll ever "hate" a Disney park.

For me, the dealbreaker about Magic Kingdom is the water quality (and its nearby hotels, including the Contemporary). It tastes so awful and ruins the fountain beverages as well. Tried to get some tap water, awful. Tried to get a Coke from Casey's Corner, awful. You'd have to always drink bottled beverages to even make it through the park. Not to mention the whole Genie+ experience has left a bad taste in my mouth, especially for rides in Magic Kingdom itself. Nothing worse than having to pay an additional Lightning Lane fee for a ride you want to go on, only for it to shut down for rain. Worst part, I tried doing it AGAIN on the last day, but yet again it rained. At least I got refunded for that, but it still sucks. On a recent visit to the resort, I realized how much I like World Showcase. If I had to do it again, I'd probably spend most of my time in Epcot, but unfortunately would have to take a couple trips to Magic Kingdom simply cause there's just too much material you have to do there (and maybe a half-day at Hollywood Studios, skipping Animal Kingdom).

I’ve just had days when making it around Epcot was a slog or even up the hill to tron was tough but I just felt the variety in close proximity in California couldn’t be beat. They should restrict the number of tickets that are sold on a single day to keep crowds under control and bring back the complimentary fastpass system, at the least. Whats the point at looking at individual rides if everything around it is just terrible? Plus, I dont think " forcing" you through 5 star $600/night hotels on your way to the entrance is very customer friendly. Showing the peasants a glimpse of a better experience really starts your day on the wrong foot, especially since you've already spend an arm and a leg to be there in the first place. @@charliemacsart If you look at Disney as an "entertainment venue" which it essentially is, just like a football stadium or a theatre , limiting capacity just make sense. You just have to look at the amount of rides + daily capacity divided by the total attendance to get reasonable waiting times. Sure you can build a 100k capacity theatre and just put a gigantic screen above the stage so the people in the back can still see the show, but its just a worse experince all around.

When I went to Disney World for the first time (as a lifelong california resident) I was both blown away and deeply dissatisfied with my experience with the parks. Epcott was this place I'd only ever heard of from my father in stories of him going as a kid, and seeing it for myself made me relive old childhood fantasies of going. For my mother and I who were there it was a grand experience in food. We did a park a day over the course of 5 days, and I won't go into the whole trip but magic kingdom ended up being the only park we left early. That was due to the fact that 1. It was packed to the brim 2. I didn't fit in half the rides as a 6'4" young man. I think it pales in comparison to disneyworld, and for my birthday this year I'll be at tokyo disney, so if I remember I'll try and update this comment with my thoughts from there.

And the fact we get to ride through it’s a small world, not to mention the additional tunnels, bridges, trestles, and lush vegetation that fits the theming to the land you go through, and there’s one additional stop at Tomorrowland so you don’t have to walk as far showing how good the walkability is in the park.

I went within the last year and I think for me out of the 4 parks we went to, (both universals, Magic Kingdom and Epcot) Magic Kingdom was easily the least liked. The biggest reason why I can easily identify is ride condition. Its extremely clear the rides are not being well maintained and many parts of animatronics and lighting ques just flat out don't work. You see it the most in fantasy land. And no joke, every single omni mover we went on stopped mid ride at least twice. Haunted mansion being the king with 6 times...in one ride. That combined with the long wait times, large crowds and not many rides for older adults, it leaves the park feeling very...hollow. And as mentioned, I don't like how long it takes to get to the park itself, especially if your off property as having to go through multiple monorails eats a lot of time. Doubly stressful if your one of the first groups for say Tron. That and your paying Disney prices which just adds to the bafflingness of how the park is in that rough of shape.
@WiiDude83
@WiiDude83 5 месяцев назад
@enchantingkatie I do get that. At the same time though, when it happens on every omni mover ride usually multiple times during a single ride it does zap you out of it completely. Magic Kingdom is my favorite WDW park, it's the most charming and classic of the four and still has its base theme in tact, unlike Epcot or Hollywood Studios. My fear right now though is with all the rumors about changes to Frontierland and Liberty Square that point towards possibly losing them entirely, and also the rumors that the Beyond Big Thunder expansion, while sticking to the "genre land" theme that Magic Kingdom has instead of making an IP land, is going to heavily feature clone rides from other parks (Radiator Springs Racers, which doesn't fit Frontierland when you really think about it) and IPs that are much more needed in other parks (for example the rumor say there'll be a Woody's Round-Up attraction in the expansion that was originally planned for Toy Story Land, which makes no sense because Toy Story Land desperately needs more to do). I have no clue why Disney is so bent on giving WDW clones of other park's rides instead of their own original attractions- I'm pretty sure Guardians is the only original attraction we've gotten in the last 6 years that hasn't been cloned/is going to be cloned elsewhere.

I lived in Orlando for 8 years and went to Magic Kingdom probably 10x/year as an annual passholder. I enjoyed it quite a lot, but I didn't really have any frame of reference. No comparisons. Now that I've relocated to Orange County (CA, not FL) and have been to Disneyland a handful of times, it's clear to me that Disneyland is the superior castle park, and it's not even close. I've also been to Hong Kong Disneyland a few times and I absolutely love that it's different - especially the west side of the hub - and has a lot of unique things. It's definitely not on Disneyland's level. It's probably a step down from Magic Kingdom on paper, but the lack of any crowds makes up for it, as it's super relaxing and chill, with nearly zero wait times anywhere.

Personally when I had an annual pass last year the park I went to the least was Magic Kingdom. Why? You might ask, well it wasn’t because I dislike the park itself (I have a lot of nostalgia and I think it has a charm) it’s because of the the TERRIBLE overcrowding, the constant strollers almost running you over, the misbehaving kids (and sometimes adults), the cleanliness is getting sloppy, and my BIGGEST problem which may not be common is that I have to park my car, take a tram, and then ride a monorail or boat to finally get to the entrance. I know this is charming for many people but for me I love parks like Epcot that make it so much more convenient to come to the park for a couple hours and leave with no problem. When I went to Magic Kingdom after a whole day there all I wanted was to go home and now because of the extreme overcrowding I would wait so long just to get to the tram (or walk very far to the car park from the station). I am probably bias since I had a particularly awful experience trying to go home from Magic Kingdom with my mom which took us almost over an hour and it wasn’t even during a super busy park day. Again I know this is charming for most but as an average theme park enthusiast who used to be a huge Disney park fan I am finding myself prefer Universal Orlando more and more because they have much less crowds, it’s easy to navigate, (including parking), there is less strollers, it’s very clean, and the cast members seem like they actually want to be there and don’t get as mistreated as at Disney. Disney isn’t a vacation it’s complicated planned out experience while Universal Orlando feel like a genuine easy going adventure vacation (in my experience on a non holiday). Sorry for the rant but this bothered me when I had the annual pass and I feel this RU-vid channel is a safe place to speak about these non popular opinions or frustrations with Disney. Let me know what y’all think because I am genuinely interested to know if anyone else feels the same way!

I think the reason i dislike Magic Kingdom so much (aside from the obvious crowding issues) is simply due to the Seven Seas Lagoon. What was once a way to fully immerse yourself in the world of the Magic Kingdom has become a cumbersome and tetious slog to get in and out of the park. It puts a major damper on the beginning and ending of a day, and the last thing i want after being in a 8+ hour day in the heat is another hour+ wait to even get to my car.

Despite being decades older Disneyland simply has the superior versions of many attractions. Pirates/Space Mountain/Haunted Mansion/Autopia/Small world all definitively worse and MK barely even has any Fantasyland dark rides to speak of. MK also has quite possibly the worst food of any Disney park which is saying something. I get they have to deal with the greatest volume of guests but would it kill to have quick service that isn't county fair trash tier food anywhere? I will say MK is much more equipped to handle massive crowds with its spacing/layout and generally has better shows/fireworks, but it also loses points for generally being a nightmare to leave any time after dusk

When it comes to Disney parks, I think, how can anyone have a good time? You're surrounded by people, spending like $500 for one day at the Magic Kingdom, and you gotta wait 5 hours to get on a 60 second ride. It's hot, it's sunny, there aren't enough shady places to sit; there is no possibility for peace, with rides making noise, and babies constantly screaming. You're tired, hungry, you don't wanna wait anymore for anything, but you have to wait in line just to go to a bathroom. You spend $40 on lunch, and hours later when thirsty, you spend $9 on a bottle of water. It sounds miserable!

Also, there's a reason Disney World is far more visited than Disneyland, people aren't choosing one over the other for no reason. Clearly it still holds up and people still love it. I'd go on to argue Magic Kingdom is honestly more iconic in the public eye than Disneyland.

Orlando is more popular because you can go into the bubble for a weeks long vacation. It's the reason Disney doesn't feel the need to upgrade Orlando, people are going to come no matter what. But since Anaheim is a locals park, they need to make it better or people will take their money elsewhere.

With some of them are there superior versions at Disneyland? 100%, but they're still at the end of the day the same attraction. I don't care what version of Haunted Mansion I get to go on, as long as I get to go on Haunted Mansion, same goes with the park as a whole. Stupid things like that half red and half white bulb are reminders that "Walt was here"....Then let's not forget that Disneyland in Anaheim also has Toontown, Galaxy's edge, Fantasmic, no humidity and better churros. That's a lot of points for Anaheim.

From my perspective, I feel like you can feel the “magic” in Disneyland. It’s more serene and calm.

I'm glad that I was wrong when I first clicked on this video. It felt like it was going to be another one of those negative Disney Parks videos that many are posting, but it turns out that it was mostly positive, and the few negatives seemed fair.

Unfortunately, there's just a huge pile of ragebait out there to shovel through. While I do skew critical, I do it because these are places that I like and want to be better.

It really boils down to transportation for me. My family doesn't go to this park anymore because we always left well before fireworks - otherwise you're waiting hours for the monorail/ferry if you don't stay at the Contemporary Resort. MK's transportation is not meant for the crowds it gets

Thanks for the great comparison video. I am not a diehard Disney park goer, but I have been to Disneyland a handful of times, and Disney World twice. I would never have had the eye for all the differences and details you pointed out, but here are some of my thoughts. 1. I can see where it would be impractical and tiresome for a regular attendee to have to access Magic Kingdom by ferry or monorail, but as an out-of-state visitor and as you have assumed, that monorail ride was just a thrill, and gliding through the hotel was magnificent. 2. Interesting to hear about the mediocre food. Very true from what I recall. Mediocre and very expensive. How can Disney as a company not do better than this? 3. I don't remember thinking much of DW's Main Street (very unmemorable). 4. I do remember being really disappointed -- almost depressed -- by the tragically boring and grim facade and launch of Small World. Disneyland's Small World facade is a soaring, glorious masterpiece, whereas Disney World's could be the kids' play area in a fast food restaurant by comparison. I can't speak of the differences inside either Small World as I can't remember them well enough. 5. I was also disappointed in the DW version of Pirates -- it probably didn't help that it was nearly empty when we rode it, but the cavernous scope of it and the dearth of people and life created an aura of failure as an attraction. I will admit that the large room with the ship in it was impressive. 6. The Haunted Mansion is one of my favorite rides and themes anywhere, ever since I had the Disney vinyl record with storybook that came with it. I actually think Disneyland's plantation-style house is much "prettier" and better enjoy standing in a long queue in its garden. However, I can appreciate the DW colonial style that you like. Inside, I like both and can accept that DW has some added elements that enhance the whole experience. 7. I think Disneyland's uncovered teacup ride with fanciful landscaping and lanterns overhead is more appealing than the dark, covered teacup ride at DW. 8. I wish I could ride both Space Mountains back to back to see the difference in the track course. I do remember the trains being different between the parks. Also wish I could ride the two Big Thunder Mountain Railroads back to back. 9. I think the Matterhorn adds a lot to Disneyland. 10. I can agree with a lot of what you mentioned about the other DW parks -- Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom. Last time I was there, all the Star Wars stuff hadn't been added, and I think the only part of Hollywood Studios I even remember was Rock N Roller Coaster. Otherwise, it was a giant Snoozefest. Same for Epcot, though I think Epcot has more to offer than Hollywood Studios (again not taking into account the addition of Star Wars). I remember liking Animal Kingdom at the time, but look back and wonder a bit about its actual fun factor. 11. A definite plus on my last trip to DW was Blizzard Beach. Big thumbs up to it.

So i commented on your other video, but for reference i recently did a 2 day park visit as a chaperone. Day 1 was hollywood studios in florida, day 2 was magic kingdom. To be fair, i am a newly annointed magic kingdom hater. We stayed for 4 hours at the park maximum before going back to the hotel. - the shows you can watch are crowded and in the middle of the florida heat - the park feels more like a shopping mall center than a park, emphasis more on shops which sell the same 40 pieces of merch - if you want to do anything, expect 90+ minutes of wait in florida heat - no more wandering disney characters, you have to wait in line to meet them - parades often canceled, when they do happen theyre ok but dont count on consistency with schedule. - magic kingdom didnt have anything for us to DO in it. You can wait in line for a 1.5 minute ride, or shop. There isnt anytning else to do in the park, which killed all sense of what disney was when i was a kid. To be honest, i recently returned from the wisconsin dells and had more fun and spent significantly less money on the whole experience. Disney has no charm, no real heart to it any more. Its hollow as an experience and the Mouse is more interested in your pocketbook than memories.

Visited Disneyland for the first time last year after 40ish trips to WDW and EVERYTHING at Disneyland either better or equivalent. Better Pirates, Mansion, Small World, Main Street, Fantasyland, Railroad, Autopia, etc. I'd trade Snow White dark ride back for Mine Train any day.

My biggest beef with Disney isn't with the parks but with the prices. There is a lot to appreciate in this video. I, too, believe the hate for WDW isn't anything more than an online trend. And both the Calif and the Fl castle parks provide their own unique reasons to love them, I prefer by the Magic Kingdom. It has more of that Disney magic than Disneyland, which seems to cram in too much in too small a space. Bottom line is I love them both.

Magic Kingdom, more than anything, just has a wealth of amazing things to do (at least as someone who hasn't visited the undeniably better Disneyland). Every land is just perfect at MK.

as a person who has always loved Disney world - I’m sad to say after returning from our yearly trip only 5 days ago, I have officially found myself not wanting more. It just wasn’t the same. Nothing was as good, as fun, or as magical as usual. I’m sad I feel much of my money spent on our 10 day trip at a moderate resort was wasted. I usually felt my money was spent for good food, good souvenirs, and the like. Now I can remember one above average meal the entire trip, and so many people in the parks that the only way to enjoy anything is to pay to play. My photo pass photos didn’t show up until yesterday after having to get in touch and tell them how many character meets etc were missing. It was ok, but left me wanting a new, better, more relaxed, better value of a vacation. Sadly, Walt Disney World is truly pushing everyone away including die hard fans with money to spend.

As a person who started visiting in the early 70s and lives nearish for the last few years, I can tell you that I regularly witness a rising anti-Disney sentiment that would have been absolutely unthinkable in the 70s. The fact that it has now become possible has been from a very long, very gradual process, now topped off by more recent huge mistakes. From the tons of people I've spoken with and have heard many varying levels of anti-Disney, I never hear anything remotely like a hate of magic kingdom as a specific target or problem. Maybe this magic kingdom thing is an online phenomenon? Or it could also be influenced by all the current general Disney hate too. Oh well Disney has been in the habit of burning their bridges for a long time now. It's nobody else's fault but their own that now everybody knows who they are.

16:20 I thought that new country bear jamboree was pretty good. Not as good as the original and some of the songs sucked but they kept Big Al and updated the animatronics and that’s enough for me.

MK is ALWAYS packed and always has the highest proportion of children, and it's weirdly hard to get to if you're not staying at an MK resort... it's so stressful. I'll take EPCoT any day.

We live in Orlandoish area. We hit one of the theme parks at least once a weekend.... Usually for 4 hours. My kids are 5 and 11. We are not die hard disney people what so ever. We were at MK yesterday for 4 hours. And yes. It is boring for me. It's not my first choice. Actually all 4 parks after 3 years of visiting are all boring imo. We just go because our kids love it

I do have one objection towards Magic Kingdom having the best tomorrow land. I do think that the tomorrow lands of Shanghai and Paris are MUCH more “futuristic” and coherently detailed, compared to the Magic Kingdom’s. As an addition, Shanghai Disneyland’s Tomorrowland is truly a whole other world at night!
