Fun fact! One of the most well-known chemicals used to block the receptors for acetylcholine is the alkaloid Atropine, found in the deadly nightshade plant, popularly referred to as 'belladonna'. Belladonna is Italian for 'Beautiful Lady', so-called because in antiquity, women would put drops of this chemical in their eyes to dilate their pupils, as it was believed that this made the women more attractive and desirable!

Drugs aren't for the weak though. They can be dangerous or addictive, but they also save lives, are therapeutic, can be fun, and are often used in spirituality or culturally relevant rituals

Note: You really shouldn't use both adrenaline and norepinephrine in the same sentence. To be consistent you should either say adrenaline and noradrenaline or epinephrine and norepinethrine.

I think serotonin plays a much bigger role in this than dopamine and norepinephrine. I am prescribed Ritalin, which is a dopamine, norepinephrine, and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor and Citalopram, which is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. The Ritalin doesn't cause any pupil dilation, but the Citalopram does. Also, the classical psychedelics like LSD and Psilocin interact very selectively with the serotonergic system and cause very strong pupil dilation. How does this make sense?

You should've also talked about Atropine Belladonna and how females used to drop an extract from this plant to inhibit the effects of the parasympathetic nervous system to make them look more attractive due to pupil dilation

Under normal circumstances with pupils dilating due to light conditions they'd want to keep a fixed level of light coming through. If they were to dilate whilst the light didn't change then why would you not perceive things as brighter?

It’s weird that you picked the “recreational” drugs you did when psilocybin or LSD has such stronger effects in those departments than weed, cocaine, or meth. Unless those were left out of the “medication” portion because of new research in micro dosing and fixing stutterers.

I always assume it's because the automatic response that protects against too much light is temporarily shut off. But come to think of it, the same thing happens when you have a concussion.

Fun fact: Some people have learned to control the muscles in their eyes that dilate their pupils, and can dilate their pupils voluntarily. It's a useful technique for free-divers to allow them to see better underwater, given that their limited air-time makes their eyes' normal dilation period insufficient. Okay, that's quite interesting, but I have wondered two things, one you have answered here (thanks), the second is: why are you not dazzled/ everything is way to bright when high on these medications or drugs? Does the body autocorrect that? And if it can do that, why do we even have an Iris (and an eye-sphincter)?

And what about the drugs the cause quite the opposite effect, such as opiates/oids. They restrict the pupils making them smaller, or pinning them up, as it's known colloquially.

same idea - either stimulating the parasympathetic system which causes constriction, or inhibition of the sympathetic system (that usually causes dilation)

When I was briefly on SSRIs, my pupils dilated all day. Thinking back on it I assumed there were serotonin receptors in the muscle, but I guess it might have been a secondary effect.

@@ronnie-lynn that’s not what serotonin syndrome is. Serotonin syndrome is extremely rare and deadly. Its where your brain dumps huge amounts of straight serotonin into your blood stream and if you don’t get help you can and will die.

I have epilepsy and my pupils get the idea that they should begin to constantly switch between bigger and smaller at times. And (luckily a little more rarely) sometimes they have difficulty keeping focus on the correct distance and I get a tunnel vision. It's quite annoying sometimes. :/

Me and some members of my family have a rare mutation where our pupils are very dilated most of the time, except when there's lots of light. It freaks some people I meet out when they see it because drugs.

Could we please get an answer to *how stones get in my shoe!!!* Even when I'm wearing laced up boots it gets in 😡. If initially the stone moves because I step on it and it flicks backward, how does it somehow gravitate back towards my shoe and get inside. Any logical answer would be much appreciated 😁

Good video, however im not sure that dopamine is related to pupil dilation, specifically opiates cause pupils to constrict to tiny pinholes, and are some of the most dopamine releasing drugs. Anecdotally I have not seen dilated pupils associated with marijuana, but if pupils were to dilate I would argue that marijuana or other substances only promote wider eyes, in comparison to something like mdma or traditional hallucinogens which make my eyes look more dramatic than what google shows for "dilated pupils" :^)

I'm disappointed this doesn't address how when on LSD your pupils seem to close and dilate randomly, even independently from each eye. Is this true or just part of the halucinations?

Well now, given that _some_ types of drugs cause your pupils to _expand_ and _other_ types of drugs cause them to _contract,_ but your pupils _also_ expand under reduced illumination and contract under _increased_ illumination, what happens if one takes a drug to make one's pupils contract and then sits in a dark room?

I reckoned not much, the times I’ve done lsd and mdma I’ve looked into bright lights and they don’t contract even in the slightest they stay huge
