Other example: The London subway was built ~100 years ago, and already it has been found that mosquitoes living in its tunnels have formed a new specie. The new ones tend to feed on rats & humans while standard London surface mosquitoes feed mostly on birds (like pigeons). Conclusion: Mosquitoes will do anything to annoy us, even form new species in a century's time

i sure hope no one comes out of this video thinking its okay to poison lakes simply because life forms can adapt... if the change is too severe and too fast you really can have a wasteland overnight. even if just one species is initially effected, it can have a domino effect on other species dependent on them.
@x2lazy2die
@x2lazy2die 9 лет назад
it sounded like our net effect is nothing by saying what we're doing is neither good or bad which is quite misleading. but sheepwshotguns, even if the single specie isn't wiped out there are alot of other issues such as a lack of genetic diversity, another specie expanding into the original specie's habitat. but generally if you're talking about something like that fish example, there probably won't be a domino effect. its things lower down in the food chain that are really significant in domino effects. when it gets to the point as a cod(was it? don't remember) then its not specific enough to cause a domino. if theres no cod, then another fish there would have more resources to increase their population to fill the gap. unless theres a specific animal that can only catch/eat cod

She did say it took multiple decades though.
@christophergarcia9022
@christophergarcia9022 9 лет назад
She didn't really say that it was ok to do anything bad like poisoning lakes. She even explicitly talked about many bad consequences from human acts like some butterfly species dissappearing from rome, New York losing more than half of their vegetation and that many fishes died and took several decades for one species to get inmunity. She just talked about how some species actually adapted to this new habitat they had. Only people that didn't even care about the other animals and vegetations before watching this video would think it is okay to do something like poisoning lakes just because some species can adapt to the change.

Evolution on hyperspeed ? So evolution might be way faster than we thought if there are quick changes to an environment.
@Ancor3

MettheSlayer Depends on the reproduction rate and mutation rate, but yes, evolution might be faster than we thought.
@theowl84
@theowl84 9 лет назад
MettheSlayer I the described effect is more related to the filter bandwidth of natural selection. While in the wild, most individuals survive, in cities only a few are selected (or are not killed). So, these animals didn't all evolve into a new species, only those who had beneficial traits in the first place, multiplied faster.
@SchiferlED
@SchiferlED 9 лет назад
Evolution always happens with each generation of a sexually reproducing species. In most natural settings, this evolution is minor and does not create noticeable differences in the population on short time scales. However, if a pressure wipes out 90+% of a population, of course the next generation is going to immediately show a higher amount of members resistant to that pressure (the 10% that survived it reproduced).
@MettheSlayer
@MettheSlayer 9 лет назад
Matthias Straka Hmm, so i guess it´s not as exciting as hyperspeed evolution :/ oh wells...
@TGRHazard1
@TGRHazard1 9 лет назад
Afro Samurai Then you thought. This isn't a new discovery, scientist have know that evolution doesn't take millions of years. It's not like the animal or plant wakes up one day and turns into a new animal or plant. You can see the changes happening in a couple of generation like they did in fruit flies and other experiment. People think evolution is when a monkey becomes a human, but it's not and we don't share a common ancestor with chimps or have a 99% DNA match.

Horned owl have been hunting near dumps in cities of Finland since dumps were found. The rats living there are a buffet to them. But when bunnies invaded Helsinki, the owl migrated from the dumps to city center. I saw foxes in the central park of Helsinki all the time but when the bunnies invaded I started to see them on city streets. The bunnies are quite under control now as the predators, including humans, keep their numbers down. We probably can never get rid of them but at least they are not munching all the park bushses now.

999MigasMovies You are missing the point. Vessel is a way for people who WANT to support the creators in monetary ways to do so AND get a benefit, which in this case, is early access to videos. It's the same thing as people getting early access to a game they supported on Kickstarter and look how well that went. Sure it might not be as big as RU-vid in the end but it probably will have a good amount of success.

Short answer: because humans regularly throw out things that plenty of animals find perfectly edible. And other animals eat those animals. That's why wolves' range has gone way down in North America, but coyotes' range has actually gone up.

Despite all this, the amount of life in lands where cities have taken place is far lower than in otherwise natural places (unless you're looking at deserts, in which case, you have external water coming in to help increase the biota instead) but anyways, this means that the rest of earth's surface has to make up for that. We're not losing fresh air, as the oceans have most of the oxygen making species, but we are losing all the other benefits that some ecosystems used to give us, like fresh water aquifers. This just means we have to make more fresh water happen artificially now.

@carsonhunt4642

Sadly people are too ignorant to realize any of that. Most people will probably walk away from this video thinking that us humans have had a beneficial impact on wildlife "because they can adapt" and "thrive". Destroying a perfectly good ecosystem so that raccoons and one species of bird and fish can survive while the other 99% dies off doesn't sound all that great to me lol. Anyways again, the problem is people are uneducated and believe anything fed to them. I'd bet 80% of people who read your comment don't even know what an aquifer is.

Creationists, smh. I don't understand why people still try to deny evolution; it CLEARLY occurs. I especially don't understand it because it's not like if evolution "is true" then God(s) can't exist! I mean, common on people.
@HSuper_Lee
@HSuper_Lee 9 лет назад
Actually I think any logical and open-minded christian would agree evolution exists, because it is obvious things change overtime. However, for me personally, when most people ask me if I believe in evolution, I tell them no because they are referring to extreme examples like ameba to man. I believe survival of the fittest can make a raccoon become a better raccoon, a fish become a different fish, but I have yet to see evidence of extreme(I believe the scientific term is macro) evolution.
@PhillipH-san
@PhillipH-san 9 лет назад
I agree, that's what I mean. I don't think it was clear from my comment, but I'm a Christian too.

HSuper Lee Evolution isn't a species changing into another species. Evolution is the way a species adapts to it's surroundings. Also, macro evolution is just a set of micro evolution pushed into a longer time interval.
@Jotto999
@Jotto999 9 лет назад
HSuper Lee The distinction between micro and macro evolution is arbitrary. The only difference is how much time and change has occurred. After an ancestor splits into two separated groups, there is nothing preventing the groups from changing until they can no longer interbreed, nor even preventing them from becoming utterly different categories, given enough time. Life is more fluid and malleable than you comprehend.

culwin Don't lump in climate change with the rest of those established theories. We still only know that we don't know enough about it.

@naphackDT

Nope. They are scientific theories, which means, if you think, they are lies, find proof and they will be gone. It's simple enough.
@culwin

naphackDT But isn't climate change the same thing? So shouldn't you have proof? Therefore they are all lies cooked up by liberals.

How much have cats evolved? Books used to call cats carnivores and tradition claims that they like fish and milk. My cats favourites are chocolate, bread, biscuits, almonds, sweet corn, olives, and they also eat potatoes, carrots, celery, ice cream (even lemon), toufu, and many more things you would not expect them to like.
@naphackDT
@naphackDT 9 лет назад
NorikoUsaken Cats are pure carnivores as they can't digest most vitamins. Omnivores like to eat cat shit because it still contains a lot of nutritients. Fact.
@1984potionlover
@1984potionlover 9 лет назад
NorikoUsaken Cats are obligate carnivores. You should not be letting yours eat things that aren't good for them. that makes you a poor pet owner. If they were wild, they would not be eating that crap. Especially the chocolate...that is poisonous to cats. Someone should be calling the local animal rescue on your idiotic ass. I pity your poor cats.

Lucarioguild7 Well it can (mostly)... notice for example the "my" turned into "muh". And not only that, but this is SOOOOOO far from a typical creationist response anyway. Usually they would start preaching... I suggest you don't try to respond to them anyway as this is sarcasm as obvious as it gets in YT comment section, it's going to be a nightmare if you ever come across a more subtle sarcasm (or worse; trolling!).

Then one day a species who specifically hunts human would appear and dominate the Earth. The End.
@1010ZZZ1010
@1010ZZZ1010 8 лет назад
What evolution advantage is this? Aside from microthings(we already have all sorts of parasites) it must be some species who begin to eat humans and feel better because of it then relatives who dont. But naturally trying to eat humans is endangering population so these who dont eat humans more likely will survive and reproduce. And humans just not so good or special for eating - eating them do not make you "dominate earth"

Jesus Ramirez Romo Even then, life will survive. It would take a bit longer, read as a lot, for multi-cellular life to recover in this scenario, but recover they will. There will also be a huge boom in evolution after the mass extinctions stabilize during this time due to many ecological niches being freed up.

a big problem with cities is that only some species are adapting to them and there are far too many urban areas. this means that although some have adapted, a large chunk of the life cycle that's still depended on by these species is struggling to survive. eventually even the adapted species will be unable to cope and die out. similarly humans themselves rely on various wild species to ensure a healthy food supply including pollinators, fertilizers, pest controlling predators and even bacteria that fights off diseases that could ruin a crop supply. the increase of urban areas breaks up woodland and areas of wildlife in a way that suits us as we're able to get resources easier but unfortunately hinders these creatures survival. essentially we're in the middle of a big boost in resource production right before a big crash. we can see the crash coming and scientists are already warning the people responsible to slow down or use better methods but unfortunately the people responsible for the crash have all the money and power and are unwilling to make any changes until things start to go wrong. the only problem with that is that by the time things actually start going bad it will be decades too late to do anything about it. you'd think that kind of information might scare the rich and powerful into making changes but as history has proven they aren't the best forward thinkers and tend to wing it through life. this also explains why the people with such power are always rising and falling to power except for those who are living off the money their parents made.
