i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know of a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost my password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me.
Bravo. I used it when I was a pyrotechnician and setting up fireworks shows on barges. They only flag I know. Unfortunately, most people had no clue. More than once did I have a boater quietly glide up behind me to then say "Are doze da fy-ya-werkz!?!?" Which to their astonishment came a barage of belittling and cursing of not knowing boating rules, etc.
Tristan thank you so much!!! I’m currently studying to pass my Yachtmaster Offshore degree and I have to learn all these flags as well. Super helpful !
Flags are all fine and dandy at the yacht club but in the commercial world, almost exclusively, its day shapes, lights, audible horn and bell signals to communicate intentions or conditions. The one notable exception is the Bravo flag for transporting or transferring dangerous cargo.
In addition to the flags, Tristan. Tell us about the various audible signals the helmsman issues during vessel maneuvering. Thanks for the informative video.
Tristan intended to say that he was showing us the International Code Flags (From the International Code of Signals), of which the red flag with white diagonal strip is not one. It does seem superfluous if you have to fly it in conjunction with International Code flag A in North America. Usually, calling them code flags is sufficient.
@@SuperYachtCaptain Ha you've done me a big favour, I can go on our usual holiday this year to the Greek Islands and show off a bit around the harbours pointing out what some of these flags mean (phone secretly hidden in pocket of course while viewing this episode) 😂😂😂👍
In US territorial waters, there is no law prohibiting the Jolly Rogers. That being said, there are other flag protocols to consider such as; in order to hoist any flag, the country of your home port flag must be hoisted higher first. Flying the Jolly Rogers could be pretence to board and inspect your vessel by any law enforcement or border authorities or even the Navy in international waters. Out of respect for the host country before in foreign waters/ports, check local laws on flag regulations. The last thing to consider before hoisting the Jolly Rogers is the fact that any true Mariners are laughing at you on the inside. If you still want to display the Jolly Rogers, fly it from the port yard arm since that is the lowest point of honor.
No not really. What we learned was you're a dick. In the system of international maritime signal flags, part of the International Code of Signals, the Z flag stands for the letter Z ("Zulu" in the NATO Alphabet) when used in letter-by-letter alphabetic communication. When used alone, it means "I require a tug" or, when used by fishing vessels near fishing grounds, "I am shooting nets". The Z flag when combined with four number flags (The leading two denoting hours, the trailing two denoting minutes) indicates Z Time (also called Zulu Time), a military and maritime term for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) (formerly called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)). Thus this would mean 0800Z ("zero eight hundred zulu") equivalent to 08:00 UTC:[1] You require a F*ing tug?! You sir are a dick. What flag do you have for that? A giant dick flag would be awesome for you.
You didn't talk about "Day Shapes". -- Day shapes are mast head signals visually indicating the status of a vessel to other vessels on navigable waters during daylight hours whether making-way, anchored, or aground. These signals consist of a set of simple geometric shapes-ball, cylinder, cone, and diamond-that are displayed, hung from a mast, in a prescribed manner to indicate a vessel's operational status. Do you see these on Super-yachts?
@Superyachtcaptain the victor flag is missing. I know you know what it means but I’ll put what it means in comments for other people. The victor flag(I require assistance). It was an incredible video!!
The Pratique "Q" flag used to be for quarantine; now it requests boarding by health inspectors and if the vessel needs to be quarantined I suspect it would have to keep Q flying until local health authorities cleared it. So the result is the same.
I AM SO JEALOUS of all of you working on yachts. I would love to be Merchandiser / Function Coordinator on a Super Yacht... And in between dusting, washing, ironing, serving... etc etc... BUT, no one will hire a 58 year old.... Maybe go and hi-jack my own yacht. :)
IF I WOULD HAVE EVER WON A TICKET ONTO A SUPER YACHT... I will bring along only ONE partner !!! That is: EVA, my Pekingese !!!! She is a PRINCESS !!!!!! Good luck to all the entrees. :)
So most of the flags are in place of if you are not able to signal by your horn?? Meaning u don’t put up your reverse purpulsion flag every time you go in reverse? Sorry I’m a little confused!!!
Not trying to sound dumb. It seems like it would be a major pain in the butt to switch flags all the time. IRL are they used consistantly? The radio on Ch 16 seems faster. Who wants to run a flag up when you are turning port or starboard? I can see B, G, Q and a few others that just stay up. Which flags get the most flying time on the yacht?
Well - there were former times when thing took their time. I remember an article in German yacht magazine were they showed a jib with a tallship (Perhaps: Crusenstern) - they showed a full maneuver. The captain was proud to do it in under 8 minutes. That's when they usual used this flag signals 😎
Some are used more than others in shipping today. I don't think I've every seen flags used for direction information, for example... Much more common are the ones that are more long term, like divers in the water, having a pilot onboard, etc. Flags like "I require a pilot" aren't used (much?) anymore. You will use the radio or a phone for that.
@@toddhercules1885 for me personally, did not "gain", however, good info for a person just starting in boating industry. Also gives a young person insight into some of a captain's knowledge base.
I see in the photo of the crew together that you are all wearing rank/role epaulettes can you take us through them, please? I have actually designed my own should I ever end up owning a Superyacht, pretty unlikely I admit.
Who will hoist I’m on fire and not trying to put it out or jump ship. I suppose I then need to hoist Oscar to say I’ve jumped in to the water. Very interesting I know phonetic alphabet but not flags cheers Tristan. Also to everyone stay safe.
Tried to signup for vacation, but the app wouldn’t work. Tried a dozen times and never got all the way through process. Love to go, but hard to win if you can’t signup!
Good to have you back on a more regular slot Captain. Without all the merchandising as well makes it even more worthwhile, for me - obviously not for you but well sorry 'bout that Cap'[n

Tristan, I've got a question for you I've always wanted to know. What is the difference between a Superyacht, MegaYacht, and a Gigayacht? Is it a length difference between the three or Gross tonnage?
