DISCHARGING SEWAGE ON A LUXURY SUPER YACHT (Captain's Vlog 111)

In this Captain's Vlog, we walk you though one of the less fun jobs - showing how to discharge grey and black water (sewage) from a luxury super yacht holding tank. Being careful not to spill a single-drop of waste water into the sea, the tanks are pumped to a specialised, waiting, barge - then taken off to a discharge facility.

When at sea is it ever allowed to dump the sewage into the ocean?
@Sokeresa
@Sokeresa 5 лет назад
Technically yeah, there is a no dump zone usually anywhere from 3 to about 12-15mi (give it or take) from the coast, close to the coast no, further in yeah. Most big yachts will have some type of treatment before dumping though, so it semi cleaned or completely cleaned, they might even reusethe water, small boats not really, they dump straight to the ocean/sea. Ocean liners and cruise ships have cleaning stations onboard, so essentially for washing your hands face and body and what not you use treated (cleaned and purified) toilet water. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Z7bTmZVPTI.html Check this out

Yes you can dump raw sewage (black water) into the ocean if you are over 12 nautical miles away from land, If you are within this you need a sewage treatment plant to disinfect the sewage before dumping. However Marpol regulations (marine pollution) has some special areas where you have to disinfect if you are in them no matter how far away you are from land the Mediterranean is one of them. Smaller vessels like these yachts will just store it and discharge it when they get to port.

@@chessyp00fs same for food waste, food leftovers, potato peelings etc but not plastic. You are allowed to dump in the sea if > 12 miles from shore, >3 miles if ground leftovers...

Love your vlogs. I recently stumbled upon your videos and am sitting in the hotel catching up on them all! Some might say sad existence I have but hey, it is what it is. I am a private jet Captain and find this fascinating. The boss has a 48 m yacht and I spend most of the summer hanging about various parts of she Med while the Boss does whatever one does on a private yacht, fishing etc.......hardly! I worked as a waiter on QE2 last century to finance the pilot license ha ha, my small contribution to merchant seamanship! Great stuff, keep the vlogs coming, nice to learn how things are done on the yacht. We have very little interaction with the yacht crew as they are always busy when we are “off duty” in Nice , Olbia, Bodrum etc.

If the boat is like an RV there are fluid level indicators in the control room. You watch the levels carefully on every trip.
@amcconnell6730
@amcconnell6730 5 лет назад
so 90 gal/6 days grey + 30 gal black, call it 60 gal per person per week. AWOL 6 guests + 7? crew = 15 x 60 = about 900 gal / week... that's about 3500 litres, or the size of AWOL's tank (assuming you mean US gal). Given Tristan's reply a bit below that they usually only pump 1-2 times a week, that sounds about right.

So I assume when you are doing longer passages where you fill the tanks before getting to a dump location, you can and do dump into the water? Is there a requirement that any treatment, addatives etc are done to the sewage prior or during the open sea dumps? I know they are allowed but I was really surprised that while at shore you have to have the tanks pumped every day. I would have thought there would be enough space for up to a week between dumps possibly, but i guess unlike some RV's Ive had, it looks like your black and gray tanks are combined as one, or possibly seperate tanks that get discharged through a common outlet connector. Still seems as though needing to empty a 3000 liter tank each day is quite a few people taking long showers and there must be a whole bunch of pooping going on too haha. Another great video Tristan, very informative. Keep it up!!

I'm not sure of offshore laws. But why not grind in the tank solids matter in Black tank real fine. Run the Grey water into Black. To help grind the solids. Screen filter that water into grey tank. Add Bio safe Chems to kill off bugs. Dump that water offshore as you go along. It would be fewer Black tank dumps needed. I did hear your comments on dumping around ports. The tanks need to be dump each day? You said? Say you have max. load crew and passengers. How many days does your tank hold? I assume you dumped black water first, then grey. Was wondering last clear water clear. You did use the seawater. Thank you for these vid's. Can you review any ship to ship sharing? Material, food, crew etc.

My thought as well. The process, black water first, then flush with grey, then clean, is much the same on big RVs, but they put the access on the outside where it is easily accessible and you can use a short hose. There should be an access panel on the outside of the hull (sealed off from the interior so no chance of flooding of course) that this guy can drive his boat up to, open the panel, connect a ten foot long hose and operate the levers himself to do the job.

Look up Robert Maxwell... Millionaire British newspaper owner who had a habit of waking up in the middle of the night and instead of using the en suite in his cabin he'd just walk onto the deck and piss over the side. Unfortunately if you're old you can feel faint when you get up in the middle of the night and relieve yourself, and the assumption is he fainted and fell overboard. It wasn't until the next morning anyone realised he wasn't on the boat anymore. And after his death it turned out he'd been stealing from the newspaper pension fund for years.
