when you're driving down the road in a tractor passes with his huge tires that are bigger than your car it can be kind of scary and then oftentimes Farmers aren't content with just one set of huge tires they have double tires taking up even more room on the road it seems a little bit excessive the farmers really need so many tires and then why do they have tires that are all different sizes like look at the stire here it's got 12 tires on it right now and they're all different sizes look at the front tires they're kind of medium sized the back tires are really big and then the trailer tires are a lot smaller but then look at this trailer it only has two tires but they're enormous then look at the Abbey it's got eight tires but they're all little itty bitty what's up with that well there's a reason that tractors have so many tires that are all different sizes and from the last video you can probably guess part of the answer the double tires that you see on the stire give the tractor a wider wheelbase making it more stable and less likely to flip over now for the stire this is the primary reason that it has double tires but that can't be the only answer because we also see tractors driving on flat Fields with massive double tires and sometimes even triple tires these Farmers aren't worried about flipping over they've added more tires for more traction oftentimes these tractors are used for pulling heavy loads across Fields spinning tires looks really cool but when your tires are spinning you're using fuel that is not moving you forward and when you're driving that tractor all day that extra fuel cost makes a difference adding more tires adds more traction meaning less slippage making the tractor more efficient but then look back at this video the lundini has double tires on all four wheels but is pulling a Tedder that's barely any load at all what's up with this we drive tractors on the fields all of the time it's what they're built to do but this actually creates a problem when we think of the ground we think of it as being hard but to grow good crops the ground needs to be kind of soft when the ground is too compact plants have a hard time growing compacted ground won't absorb and hold rain water as well meaning the rain will just run off into the river instead of being absorbed by the ground and feeding your plants plants also have a harder time digging their Roots through this soil and there are a whole bunch of other problems but the end result is the same ground that has been overly compacted has a significant loss in yield some places saying as high as a 50 loss and you've probably actually seen this in real life look at an abandoned Road the grass has grown up everywhere except for the tire tracks the vehicle's tires have compressed the ground to the point that plants don't grow and the same thing can happen to to a field when you're working that field and driving over the ground again and again year after year you're compacting the soil more and more and this is a big part of the reason why tractors need big tires there are two important numbers here axle load and contact pressure axle load is the load that each axle of the machine carries when the axle load becomes too heavy somewhere around six tons you start compressing all of the way down to the lower subsoil this is as deep as a meter down and it causes permanent damage to the land to prevent these lower subsoils from compacting the best way is just use lighter machines the only thing on Cobble Valley that can even come close to that weight would be the slurry tank the John Deere is the heaviest tractor on the farm and it's only four tons total so that's two tons per axle because our axle load is not heavy we're not very concerned with compacting the lower subsoil but we are concerned with compacting the top soil this is where contact pressure comes in contact pressure is how the entire weight of the tractor is distributed over the ground look at a little tire there's only a little bit contacting the ground meaning the weight of the vehicle is spread out over a very small surface area this results in a higher contact pressure the higher the contact pressure the harder your top soil is going to be compacted when you have a massive Tire there's a lot more rubber touching the ground spreading the weight of the tractor over a greater surface area resulting in a

I read the article in the "Bauernzeitung Ostschweiz und Zürich" about you. It was a surprise for sure!

Yeah, it came out after I had filmed this video. Unfortunately my joke about the Einsiedeler newspaper doesn't work as well anymore. Bad timing🤷‍♂️

My Great Grandfather immigrated from the Aarwangen Canton Bern area in the late 1880's. He settled in eastern Nebraska on the Great Plains. Large mostly level farm ground. I grew up on a farm/ranch that grew corn and soybeans, as well as native grass hay. As we ran a cow calf herd as well as finishing the calves for the consumer market. All the ag equipment was JD green. The smallest tractor is a 40 HP 4044R. Everything else is between 100 HP to around 300 HP.

It really is fascinating how many swiss move to america and started farming. This is something I want to look into further when I have more time.
