Good point - I have a friend who interviewed Trump a couple times long before he was President, and she told me he was the most easily manipulated man she'd ever met. She said she just had to flatter him a little bit and he'd talk about anything she asked him.

I've thought about that a lot. I'm not even trying to win over hard core Trump supporters any more. But I hope there's a set of people who are convinceable, still, and want to be convinced that their faith doesn't require them to vote for whomever the GOP gives them. I HOPE :)
I think there are folks who are convincible, the hard part is getting time on their dance cards. I have a significant awareness of the political goings on because I have time to and want to spend that time on it, but the majority of America does not think a fun Monday evening consists of reading transcripts of Trump's speeches and then comparing them to The Stormer. They have other stuff sucking up their time and reading primary sources is work to them, so any news they do consume is distilled and, oftentimes, lacking substance. If you can make it into their time, you might at least plant some seeds of doubt. ❤ Dunno if they'll germinate, but that's also why these kinds of conversations have to be multi part. They're almost never a one meeting affair. You plant the seed, but you have to return to water it.

When people are poor they are stressed and think based on emotion. The religious right's leaders tell them they must do xyz or they will burn in a lake of fire. This is the result. He comes out and says he is just a pastor interested in the truth and staying out of politics. Then he declares his opposition to Donald Trump...so right there, he became a political activist. And then there's the word of God, the Bible, that shines light on everything including politics. And what did God say in the Bible? God appoints leaders for His purposes and God removes leaders for His purposes. This brings the question; how does he know that he is not speaking against someone whom God is going to place back in the WhiteHouse? That’s precisely who I thought you’d put there in that bottom spot. During his presidency, Trump met with Putin and did not allow any American interpreters to accompany him and transcribe the meeting’s discussions. This has never been done in history. Every word of what was discussed will never be known in history. We just don’t do that. When the Mueller report came out I didn’t trust that I was being told the truth about what was in it. So I spent that Easter weekend reading it. The following weeks were torture to listen to Trump and his followers repeating no collusion and no obstruction over & over and claiming how it exonerated him. Nobody who actually reads it could ever come to that conclusion.

Accurate assessment and it is heartbreaking and infuriating. As a Christian who has supported ongoing humanitarian works in Ukraine for nearly 20 years and fallen in love with the Ukrainian people, I really can’t stand to see so many Christians being tricked into thinking Putin is “one of them”. The callousness to say “why should I care if people are dying in Ukraine?” Or “that’s ok with me” is just sickening.
They aren't tricked. I can trick a child easily. I can trick an animal such as my idiot pet. What this excuse does is alleviate the burden of being a good intelligent thoughtful considerate individual from this group of Christians. And yes, they are Christians. We have this same tension when we talk about being proud of being American and then.. Vietnam enters the picture or all the other crap my beloved country has done and will do. This is not a relationship where one can pick and choose who gets to be a member. What happened is that Christianity does teach its followers to be narcissistic and egotistical and cruel. How? It puts you guys into a "are you going to be saved or not?" stressor and people aren't allowed the time to choose the morally better choice. After all, you might go to hell if you vote for a Democrat. Who wants to risk eternal damnation? It's always about you and are you right with god. Your god died for you. All of us non-believers are evil and trash. Maybe not in your particular denomination but this is in your text and in many of your churches. It's not even just christianity. This is a major flaw in every religion that I've looked at. The sin of tribalism. The moment that divider is created, the nots will suffer while the haves will sacrifice their humanity in exchange for an easier life. The MAGA Christians are not innocent little Adam and Eve. They are intelligent people who chose this of their own free will and thus, we know what they truly are. Their actions (words, support, votes) are the evil that enjoys hurting and suffering and pain of others. The sadists. The monsters. That's what they are. They were never innocent or misguided or even good. They were always wolves.

One thing I thing most of us are ignoring is that Trump supporters want an authoritarian ruler and not a democracy. The question is will we defend democracy or cry about things like Gaza and Biden is to old.
For years I was convinced they were being misled and fooled. I finally had to come to the realization of that’s who they are. They aren’t being deceived by a wolf in sheeps clothing, they are wolves themselves that love other wolves.

Thanks Pat for this informative podcast. I welcome your centering your analysis from a place of compassion, respect and kindness. I'm finding your podcasts to be very important additions to the conversation by putting meat on the bones of the very important topic of evangelical support for a very undemocratic and corrupt trend. A trend, an authoritarian movement really, that has been building since the 1970s to counter regulations to restrict wealth and power, to counter unionization, environmental regulations, worker health and safety and benefits to people and families, like child and elder care, vacations, work and family balance and community solidarity. This authoritarian movement took cover under the "culture wars", infiltrating many institutions and grass root organizations. It erupted into the mainstream as a result of the 2008 financial crisis and blamed Mr. Obama for it even though he did not became president until 2009. His hands were tied. He wasn't able to nationalize mortgages to help people keep their homes. Had he done so, it would have taken the wind out of this authoritarian movement. This authoritarian movement took the opportunity of that crisis to erode democratic institutions that had held the abuse of power in check. It eroded the values of democratic civil society and that of civil discourse to hold abhorrent ideas, even violent threats, in check. Freedom of speech doesn't protect threats, slander or libel. It shouldn't protect business advertising either as businesses are not people. This movement courted Mr. Trump for their figurehead and he obliged. Since 1991 Ukraine has evolved into a thriving democracy, giving Ukrainians civil rights and raising their living standards and quality of life (two very different goals). It's become a threat of a good example right on Russia's border. The Russian empire and then the USSR had brutalized Ukraine (pogroms, Holodomor genocide), refusing to acknowledge the Ukrainian language (just a Russian dialect) and culture (just a Russian regional culture). Nonetheless, until the Russian invasion in Feb 2022, there was a free flow of Ukrainians and Russians across the border with many Ukrainians and Russians intermarrying. There was a budding free-press in Russia, with many courageous journalists exposing corruption, human rights abuses, assassination of political opponents and many journalists themselves finding the same fate. Mr. Putin has become obsessed with the influence that Ukrainian democracy might have on the Russian people and on his hold on power. Mr. Zelensky was taking corruption within Ukraine seriously. Corruption is a killer for democracy. Mr. Putin is reputed to be the richest person in the world thanks to corruption. He has created a mafia society within the Russian bureaucracy. His KGB training made him a skilled and effective mafia don. The "West" (especially the US, UK, Germany and France) used the Shock Doctrine variety of neoliberal policies throughout the 1990s, eyeing Russian mineral resources as a source of privatized plunder. Dealing with corrupt oligarchs, who care nothing about the well-being of their fellow citizens and their country, is "easier" than dealing with honest, democratic economic nationalists who want to use their country's resources for the betterment of their country. The Shock Doctrine sent the Russian people into abject poverty and Russia into chaos. Mr. Putin brought order. The Russian people, especially the older generation who remember and long for the Soviet order and security, support him for that for that reason alone, despite the lack of political rights and freedoms. Food and shelter always comes first. Development, construction and mining are among the most corrupt industries and if they are not tightly regulated the people who run these industries become corrupt too. Mr. Trump functions like a mafia don but without the skills and discipline. It is obvious that he would like to do to the US what Mr. Putin has done in Russia, amass and concentrate great wealth and power with no rules that apply to him. I fear that Mr. Trump also sees other western democracies the way Mr. Putin does, as a threat of a good example that the American people might take a liking to, like real family values and the expansion of the “commons” (ex. public childcare, public healthcare, public transit, public parks and access to green space, clean air and water, housing coops, unions, 6 weeks of paid vacations, paid family leave for both mothers and fathers, higher minimum wage, public pensions, workers on corporate boards, capital gains taxes, etc.) all of which are routine in many European countries. Democracy is a sliding scale. No country is perfectly democratic. All are works in progress. Most are sliding backwards especially in the face of climate and political refugees. But some democracy is better than none. All of them have authoritarian movements developing because democracy is hard. It's work. It’s time consuming. It's work for ordinary citizens, not just for expert technocrats and elected officials. It's work for teachers and parents to inculcate democratic values to their students and children, for journalists to inform their audience, for neighbors to lend a helping hand. It is harder work when societies become ever more complex and interconnected crises become ever more entrenched. It's especially work when our hands are tied by the religious ideology of neoliberalism which is incompatible with democracy and Jesus' teachings. Mr. Trump has no values that Jesus would support. His goal is utterly anti-Jesus. Are the Beatitudes and Woes no longer taught to Christians? I can't picture Jesus being a CEO of a large financial institution or of a development company wearing an Armani suite. What gives?

I think I need to enter an objection to your terminology about Russia and their faith. They are Eastern Orthodox more precise would be Russian Orthodox they've been around for over a thousand years. To simply call them Christian is not doing Justice to their history. So I think we need to be very careful about the terminology we use and describing "Christian", as it will tend to make us think that their Christianity is just like protestantism which it is not. Just pointing out something that I think needs a little more clarification and study on your part
My Trump loving family was all for Putin. But I was starting to question the MAGA movement when Putin became a hot topic. My family thought he was a good guy. I remembered Biblical End Times prophecy and thought that he very well might not be the good guy. I'm not sure what my families stance is on Putin anymore...they just don't talk about it much. Sort of like the false Trump prophecies...how they got swept under the rug and forgotten. It's just simply not addressed anymore.
