Why Do TRX450R Cranks Fail?

In this video I explain why the TRX450R crank Fails and my way of preventing the TRX450R crank from failing again. Not sure why Honda did not engineer a simple little shim is all that it would take to make these bottom ends last pretty much for ever instill they Literally wear out.

I’m a little confused about the 06+ ones. I get how the actual main bearing walking in its race will cause problems on the 04-05s but the 06s are locked into place and the crank is not a press fit so how are the cranks suppose to be locked into place. And unlike the picture that you showed my 06 has a different style left side bearing with no inner race. The crank actually touches the rollers and I changed the case and both bearings were the same way. So I guess my question is how is the crank suppose to not walk when it is not a press fit into the main bearings. When installing my crank it literally dropped right into the bearing with no heat or anything and this is exactly how the service manual said it should be. I’m a little worried after watching this video lol because when my cases were put back together you could move the crank back and forth in the case very easily. It was like that before and after rebuild and that is how it has been on Honda dirt bikes that I’ve rebuilt with pretty much the same motor. Once all the bottom end components like the flywheel, clutch, primary drive bolt and everything was torqued down the crank was locked into place though. Is this correct? I have some run time on it and I’ve had no problems so far it’s running like a top. About to do the first oil change hopefully I don’t strike gold lmao

@@trxtech3010 I have used it quite a bit maybe about 3 oil changes deep and a total of 15hrs and every oil change has flakes. Its sounds good and no issues, just the flakes.

Yo Great video. I got a 06 Trx 450ER no gold flakes in filter but gold coloring in the oil. How much life you think it has and should i worry.

O you happen to sell these shims for the crank play? Id be interested on grab a few variations of sizes if so while i have my bottom apart haha thabks man great vids

I do not, how ever you can find some Shim Stock and cut then out to the size you may need. Always measure the crank shaft side to side play prior to disassembly so ou kow what size shim you may need int order to take out the play or stop the play from ever happening again.

Is shimming the crank only for 04-05 motors? I have an 07 that needs a crank. Can I just press new thrust washers into it and put it back together? Thanks

Yes on the shimming is only fir the 04/05 engines. As fir the 07 VlCrank yes you can rebiuld the crank shaft with new parts CP Pistons and Rods sells kits to rebiukd the crank shaft... however it cost a lot but last's longer.

My 07 had brass shavings but my rod side clearance was still way in spec....

Just took apart mine because I thought my thrust washers went since I found a bunch of gold flakes and the thrust washers seem fine. Idk where the shavings are coming from.

The piston gives excessive pressure to the crankshaft.

You would need to do Bottom and Top. When this happens the Piston and cylinder gets scored really badly.

Where did you get something that big to shim the right side bearing??? I've been looking for years for a fix for the original engine out of my 05 450r. Now all I need is to order a left side case and new crank. I've wasted multiple cranks so I'm sure I can't use the left side case anymore.

Look into the right crank bearing updated sldesign. It has to be pressed on in a certain way and stops all crank side to side movment.

Hi bro I’ve read a comment you’re from Tucson I live in Tucson as well, I have a question, I’m doing a rebuild on my 05Honda trx 450r I have shunned my valves since I installed s stage 2 hot cam but how do I adjust the auto decompressor? Thanks man

Just adjust it to about .008" When you adjust it you just need to make sure the engine is on TDC it's like old school 400ex, 300ex and Raptor 350 or 660 raptor Rockers. Just it's a Decompressor is all.

just purchased one myself but getting beyond frustrated. Not knew to engine from amc 410s to 347, to vmax rebuilds to kfx but this thing has me stomped and getting desperate.. any idea what would cause piston slap when everything is in or within spec?? because I have now seen three (original when I bought it and two other piston cylinder kits? Fits piston bore kit athena Within spec rod journals, rings filed etc and immediately same loud slapping noise, took piston out sure enough skirts have wear.. After five minutes run time. So decided to just redo the whole engine, hotrods +3mm crank w 99mm bore/piston. Everything replaced but cases, clutch basket and gears and the head was fine so.. Get it all back together and same thing maddening noise, so i take it out anyways for about three hours everything runs cranks fine but awful sounding. change the oil the next day and have a few large flakes of alumin. take it apart and again, piston skirt wear. it is not detonating (checked with 110 octane) it is timed right, head torqued to 40ftlbs in criss cross sequence, oil great, cases cleaned, rings gapped etc.. brought to my machinist today and while both my kits are within spec 96mm .0015 pist/cyl and the 99mm .0016 pist/cyl clearance they have to be replaced AGAIN because the slapping. so i am just clueless at this point as is my machinist that has for last 20 years balanced my cranks for my jet boats and most my atv friends. cases go together fine too so.. any help would be appriciated. What would cause this engine to be immediately eating up piston skirts?

charles b what kind of oil are you running I always suggest to run Rotella 15-40. pistons skirts usually get a little bit of scuffing on them which is normal after even a short run. Now if it's actually gouging it to where you can feel it and it catches your finger nails then that is something I would be concerned about. . with my experience on these TRX450R's, is that you'll hear a loud slapping or it sounds like piston slap or it sounds like valves (hard to tell sometimes) after a rebiuld and it Could very well be your front timing chain guide, that and the timing chain are parts that a lot of people just don't think to replace. But wjat will happen is the front Timing Chain Guide will get worn out and it'll bang around and makes a horrible loud ticking slapping metallic noise. When installing the front timing chain guide you will see it has these two little "nubs" each side that sit amd rest into two little slots on the cylinder (before the head gasket is installed) make sure while assembling that those are not loose I always recommend replace the timing chain guides (especially the front one) because those little knobs I'm speaking of are one of the biggest ware points on the timing chain guide and that's where it starts clanking around is right in that area it makes a terrible noise. also I figured I'd throw this in there did you by chance have a crank failure in the past? because if you had a crank failure it's possible that your oil cooler can be full of metal shavings as well.

Almost guarantee that the Crank is done for. Check the oil filter fir silver shavings.

Hi , hey bro I’m what store do you get the shim from , I have a 2005 trx 450 and the left side bearing is not secure on the case you can Even take it out with your fingers your think the shim will help to solve the problem please , let me know bro I really appreciate it.

Yeah you will need to replace the Left Case Half of the engine. Another thing you can try first is get some Green Bearing retainer, it's made by LockTite it's Number 39150 just do a google seartlch try that and see if it holds the bearing in place.

@@jorgebasaldua6217 The problem is if it's that we use the entire race of the varying me spin and move around and then cause you other issues that can lead to castrophic failure.

So I’m having this issue on a 05 I just picked up. It runs great but I changed the fluids and found shavings in my oil filter. No brass just metal. Where do I go from here? Any chance you’d source some part numbers and things this is all confusing me with what parts to get. I was looking into the wrench rabbit full rebuild kit until I seen this video.

Also is a full rebuild necessary or can I just rebuild bottom end?

@@masoneakins2666 Usually if you get a crank Failure a Full rebuild is required. Reason is because you have small shaving through out the engine and most likely those small shavings may have damaged other things. I always recommend going with OEM Crank or at least OEM Main Bearings and Hot Rods crank will be OK.

Parts List. If the Cylinder is good I would recommend Carrillo Piston 12:1 Compression (94mm) OEM Crank -13090-HP1-315 OEM Main L Bearing - 91001-HP1-671 OEM Main R Bearing - 91008-HP1-672 Gasket Kit B - 06112-HP1-670 Gasket Kit A - 06111-HP1-670 Oil Pump - 15021-958-000 Right Crank Seal - 91202-HP1-671 Left Crank Seal - 91201-HP1-671 For the Valves, you can go with Ferrea or Kibble white they're about 250 more, they're stainless steel last longer and you can do +1mm with fresh cut seats for cheaper then the OEM Valves.

We bought two 04 trx 450s we did this shim procedure to one and so far so good it works like a charm with the shim. I do have a question maybe you could answer. The second bike we were getting aluminum shavings in the filter not metal and not the copper or brass colored just silver aluminum, so we tore it down half way the washers on the bottom end of crank are fine and the side to side play of the rod is within spec. With the cylinder off and turning bike over by hand the the lower bearings feel good and free. Im going to split the cases when i get time and finish troubleshooting but what do you think is causing this problem. So far everything looks good. Do you think im going to find the crank bearing spinning in the case maybe?? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah I am 100% Positive you caught the Crank Failure just in time. Before you split the Case Half's does/did the Crank have any side to side play and make a metallic clunk when you push and pull on the flywheel by chance? That is what happens when the Crank is starting to fail along with the metal shavings.

TRX Tech I had a real small amount of play side to side. Finished tearing it down and i cant see any issues with the bearings. They are extremely tight in the cases. The only thing i can think is you are right and I caught it at the very beginning of rod failure due to the crank walking. I measured the side to side play on rod and it’s within spec. Im going to take the crank up the shop today and let them look at it. I guess i will order new bearings and plan on shimming and put it back together. Thanks for your response back.

No. Just keep an eye on your oil filter makes sure there is not gold flakes

I have a question I recently bought a 05 trx450 and it runs great but it gets the lugging effect when I go over bumps and it leeks oil form the side not from where the piston is* any idea what it could or what I should do?

@@jayfry2691 update it wasn’t leaking oil where the piston was and the it was lugging because I wasn’t shifting correctly now it runs amazing tuned it just right it may be a bit lean that’s why I’m taking a look at the plug this weekend when I go riding 🤟
