Why do we celebrate Diwali? | The Festival of Lights

#Diwali, the festival of lights, also known as Deepavali, is celebrated with great joy all across India. Lamps are lit, sweets are prepared at home, and fire crackers are burst with great enthusiasm. But did you know that this festival is celebrated on different days, at different times and for different gods in different parts of India? India is a big and diverse country. Each part of the country has its own customs, myths, and ways of doing things. Is it any surprise that there are many stories associated with Diwali? In North India, Diwali celebrates King Rama's return to Ayodhya. Down south and in the western part of India, Deepavali marks the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. And in the east, Diwali is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Did you know that some villages in Himachal Pradesh celebrate Diwali one whole month after the rest of the country? This short video is about the many charming tales of this much-loved festival.

I just listened this one fully as I wanted to send it to my daughter who is lately showing interest in Indian traditions. Must say, this has been done very nicely. Six minutes clip is just perfect timing, neither too less nor too long. Associated exhibits have been very well juxtaposed with her narration. She has also beautifully explained different reasons and traditions of Diwali celebrations in different part of India. Even I learnt quite a bit. Glad she mentioned the right raison d'être of Diwali celebrations in Bihar and Bengal. In fact, during our childhood period, in Bihar (of course B+J), Diwali was only of minor importance as compared to, Durga Puja and Chhath. Only a few years ago due to influence of North, its status has gone up. Her presentation style is very good and keeps one riveted with rapt attention. She is very well aware of the cardinal Principle of Presentation: Say what you are going to say, Say, Say what had been said. Her summary towards the end is again very good.

Diwali is also celebrated to worship goddess of wealth Laxmi So, guess it adds one more to the list 🙂

That's the north indian tradition of worshiping dhana laxmi. However eastern part celebrates gajalaxmi on full moon day of Aswin (october) and we odias worship dhaanya laxmi in the month of margashirsh . Down south vijaya laxmi is worshipped during durga puja and barad laxmi on a different date

Kali puja during Diwali is only 300 years old. Earlier, it was Laxmi Puja in the eastern India which is still continued in some Bengali households.

Excellent. Old Diwali of Himachal is very interesting. Since India has been a continuing civilization, most of different festival days would overlap based on events that happened around the same day across different centuries or yugas. But those would, mostly, still be different festivals. For Deepavali too, it is evident that the events narrated happened over different centuries or yugas. What is interesting is that it has come to be commonly referred to as Deepavali :) though it still retains the other names as well - Kali Puja or Naraka Chaturdasi

It is Naraka Chaturdashi(14 th day after the full moon) and not Naraka Chaturthi(4th day after the full moon)the next day is new moon (amavasya)... Goddess Lakshmi's Pooja is performed in the evening of amavasya.

Pragjyotishpur is old name of Guwahati city in Assam. If you visit the Kamakhya Devi Shakti Peeth you will find an incomplete staircase which was built by the demon Narakasura to satisfy his lust by marrying Kamakhya devi but the Goddess thwarted the plan by creating an illusion of daybreak which caused the cock to crow untimely. The demon then raised his sword, chased the cock to a far off place and killed it. The place where Narakasura killed the cock is now known as kukurakata because in Assamese language cock means kukura. The incomplete staircase leading to the temple is known as mekhela ojuwa path.

You missed the whole point of the video. The beauty of Diwali is it has no singular origin. Let us all embrace not just our own reasons for celebrating Diwali but also everyone else’s.
