What's the big deal with sealed video game collecting anyways? Does it matter if a video game is sealed and graded by WATA or CGC or VGA? Why not just collect complete in box games, or even just the cartridges? In this raw discussion, let's explore the reasons for collecting sealed video games, and examine the state of the hobby in Q4 2022. I hope you enjoy, and please feel free to chime in with your own thoughts in the comments section.

It seems clear that you actually do care about the intrinsic value of collecting for collecting sake, which makes it even MORE bizarre that you would attack someone trying to point out how this market is being ruined by greedy people who don't care about any of the things you mention in this video. If the "magic" and nostalgia and personal connection are what are important then why does it matter what the arbitrary perceived monetary value is? Is your "magic" ruined because your sealed game that you claim to never intend to sell, sells for less on the secondary market? If anything you should want the prices to be cheaper so that more people can enjoy that "magic". It's pure selfishness however you spin it.
@DemonaruMusic

it's because you're right, he cares about he value of the collectibles, but its really not for collecting sake. I saw someone else say this particular line but I think it puts it excellently, "Collectors get excited to see the price of an item go down, speculators get excited to see the price go up." He wants the collectibles to have value because he has amassed more money. Collectors get more excited to see price drops so they can now afford more of their collected hobby. He claims he won't sell but I think he really means he doesn't plan to sell for a long time. Because it's an investment to him. He wants the games to keep accrewing value over many more years. And the massive auction house scam spike did exactly that for him.

@@DemonaruMusic World is not black or white. You can love your collection/hobby, but people also tend to like to feel special. Possession of something out of reach of the majority of people gives this kind of a feeling. Market value is one of the factors, that gives such people an "objective" measure of their collection. I can get it, that it feels nicer to have a collection worth 1mil, than to have a collection worth 1000$ even without an intent of selling it. Different people, different mindsets, and multiple motivations - people very rarely do something just for one reason, most of us are more complex than this.

1:22 No one aside from a few niche manipulators feels any differently. Anyone claiming to be able to grade shrink wrap and cardboard is ridiculous. And that is what you collect; shrink wrap, cardboard and a ripoff plastic case with a made up number from a Kahn man.

We don't like collectors because you're in it for what we think are the wrong reasons. Turning an escapist passtime into a capitalist, monkey-making scheme soils it. Sure, the game costs money, but capitalizing on people's nostalgia makes it even more heinous.

I don't think you can easily say all collectors. I think the people you hate are the minority, but at the same time are the ones that are in the spotlight the most and therefore make it seem like all collectors are like that. Most people collect things because they are passionate about them

@@topnotchtsiI think you underestimate how many people do hobbies for the possibility of financial incentive. I agree most people do it out of love for the hobby but that doesn't mean that they only do it for the fun of it a lot of people do it for both and thus the people who only do it for money can treat it like investments

The thing about collecting is it really has no vault except to those who do it you couldn't sell those to a person who is gonna play the game or simply doesn't care for example if you had a box full of baseball cards "worth" 10 million and were trying to seel them to me you would be out of luck as I don't care for baseball or baseball cards now I'm not saying this is a bad thing different things are worth different amount to different people I just find collecting to be a weird market

@topnotchtsi
@topnotchtsi 8 месяцев назад
Fair enough. But I challenge you to re-read your comment and see where anywhere in it was something other than just your opinion vs you asking questions to help you understand better. For instance, your $10 million dollar box of cards and how he couldn't sell them to you because you don't care about baseball. Obviously. You aren't the target audience in that case, baseball card collectors are. Which that $10 million dollar box of cards WOULD sell to. Collecting doesn't have any value except to those who collect? How does that make sense? I'm not selling graded pokemon cards to the ladies in the aisle at the grocery store, I'm selling them to other collectors who DO enjoy the hobby, want preserved examples, like the artwork, etc. etc.

the fact that you bought a sealed game from me soooo long ago speaks to everything people need to know about you being a collector haha. $300 for a sealed Goldeneye.... ugh😅 Love this candid talk on what sealed games mean to all of us. The inherent difficult of condition, inherent rarity, and difficulty of aquisition are honestly what makes it so fun for me. Cartridges and CIB are also amazing, but sealed is just so damn special/cool. Especially when we are just talking about pure collecting - completely separate from the act of actually playing video games.
@themaddogcollection
@themaddogcollection Год назад
It's funny, Goldeneye was a great deal, but even a decade from now, I'll still be out the $300! Agreed, it's all about the chase... and I find it funny that in today's market, with the big auction houses carrying these games, that something like a sealed Mega Man 1 NES comes up two times in two months... when one didn't come up in 5+ years on eBay! Yes, games are more expensive in this environment, but the positive side of that is that things become available that would take YEARS to find... and even a $20,000 premium on a game that may take you 2000 hours to track down... that's just $10/hr! lol

Nice video , i feel something very special when i am holding a sealed NES and a SNES game. I also collect comic books and i don´t feel anything close to it when i am holding a book . I have them raw , VGA and Wata graded and the ones i enjoy the most are the raw and the VGA , i don´t like the actual Wata case so i am gonna try CGC and the new Wata case wich looks more cleaner
@themaddogcollection
@themaddogcollection Год назад
Yes! I find the best magic is with the raw games - BUT... I get too worried about them getting damaged when they are raw, even in those acrylic sleeves, the corners could still damage if one were to hold it too tight, or drop it... that's why I've graded almost every game I own, even poor condition ones, mainly because I want to preserve and protect them. I hear you on the old Wata cases.. I do like them, but can see why some wouldn't like the bulkiness of them. At least there are some options now, between the new Wata case and CGC... will be a tough decision! Choose wisely, you can only go with one! (if they need to match that is)

Awesome video and collection, Mad Dog. One thing I like about grading which actually retains the magic of my favorite sealed games is the fact that you pretty much know it’s authentic. If I handle it raw, my mind keeps going to whether it’s a fake seal, which is very common in the hobby. It is indeed a magical feeling to see these authenticated relics of a very nostalgic time! (Skies of Arcadia Dreamcast, Rogue Galaxy PS2, and Legend of Dragoon PS are some of my favorites in my own collection). Great points and looking forward to more great content on your channel! I appreciated more of a sit-down chat this time. You’re a great editor, but this was a perfect presentation of the topic.

Agree Mad Dog, this is why I collect sealed games as well. I remember opening Mike Tyson's Punch-Out for Christmas and the first time I got a sealed copy many years later it was an incredible nostalgia experience for me. I remember opening the seal on these games and what that was like. Same thing with my Gameboy Console in 1989. This whole narrative that sealed collecting is disconnected from nostalgia and its not a pure form of collecting is crap.

Yes! I remember specifically opening the plastic seal as well! I used to pull on the corner flap of the H-Seam, and it would tear easily along the seam... and of course I would throw out the boxes shortly after opening... but I guess that's the fun of it, and what makes it so special to actually find a sealed copy all these years later - because none of us kept it sealed, we would tear into them the second we could!

Sealed retro games can still be very expensive over here but nothing compared to the US. I'm not sure if the UK or Europe will ever have the same market?...
