Ok, so let’s start with the fact that humans are tribal. This is evolutionary. Our ancient ancestors formed groups based on trust and cooperation. Humans are and always have been social animals, who are quick to see the benefit of forming groups and will go to great lengths to keep the group together. The longer we stay in groups, the more likely we are to have common goals and, more importantly, common morals.
Here’s a little disclaimer- I probably should point out that I am also a human before we move forward with this video.
So yeah, we humans are held together by these things called morals, or the beliefs and standards about how humans should behave. Morals hold us together but also makes us fear and hate other groups. And, we get pretty offended when individuals in our group want to leave and join another group. Humans have been around a couple hundred thousand years, and today we may think we are individuals, but we are still heavily dependent on groups. Some groups we have a much deeper sense of membership of. For example, we are usually pretty loyal to our families, or our religious group. However, we are usually not so deeply tied to our coworkers or classmates, for example. We have emotional connections to the groups we are loyal to.
It really doesn’t matter what type of group it is. We can go all-in for any group, no matter how big or small, or no matter how nefarious it may be.
Speaking of which, I’ve been meaning to start a cult. I’ll let you know when the Facebook page is finished.
Once we are all-in, there is often no going back. The group becomes our identity, and our status in society becomes directly tied to the group.
So why do we so often go all-in for political ideologies? Because politics is directly related to morals. Again, morals are the beliefs and standards about how humans should behave. Politics is about what the people in power do, and what they do directly affects the rest of society. Because we think our group is moral, then of course we passionately defend it and attack other groups. But here’s a great quote. “Too often, we judge other groups by their worst examples - while judging ourselves by our best intentions.” That quote was by someone who made my Worst Presidents video. George W. Bush. But it’s true. We tend to think we are more virtuous than others. We get so upset over politics because when someone criticizes are political beliefs, just like when they attack our religious beliefs, we perceive it as an attack on our identity.
Look, at least politics is an important thing to get upset about. I mean, we get upset about petty things, like sports teams.

We've Become a "Us Vs Them" society, Mainly foucused on the Political Party. Many People vote for just the Candidate's Political Party, not on Their policies. I think The main thing that has divided the country is mostly that. We've put the tride first before every thing just like the football. example he gave, And This could or will get worst. I was born here in the US but My parents and Grandparents are from Colombia. Mostly for My grandparents, they lived in an era were The political party was everything for the country. In 1948, Grandpa Was 2 years old and that was when the country went through a bloody insurrection known as the Bogotazo in the Capital. This rebellion was Somewhat based on Opposition the Ruling Conservative party at the time, but was mainly On Protesting the Killing of a Very popular head of the Left wing Liberal Party, but Quickly the protests turned to Riots and quickly Spriled in a 10 year Civil War between the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party, where thousands were killed, and yes this conflict lead to Gurrellia And Drug Wars that came later in the 80s and 90s. If A Conflict Like that, were people turned a death into an excuse to kill liberals or Conservatives in a conflict that still has implications to this day in a Country As influential in South America politics like colombia, it can happen here as well, where tensions Between Democrats and Republicans Sprill to Civil War. And that's the Worst Scenario, maybe the best Scenario is this: People get smart of Not Wanting to Punch each other because of Political Party and just Argue about What the Policies of the Curtain Candidate's policies mean to you. There will be to divisive and Trashy Parties and there will be Some Forms of Partisan, Not as much as Today. Maybe an ere were people gave a chance to Thrid Party Candidates. That's the Good scenario, I think the Best that we all can do, Both Democrats or Republicans, is to Think of the golden Rule: "Teat people how you want them to to treat you" , don't Talk Trash about just That currtain party and License to that Person's Views and Agree or Disagree Will calm, Not with Yelling and fighting. hopefully This Tribalism that we live today Will be just a Simtom Of Political Backlash To the Parties and Hopefully Go away and Unite the Country once more. I sound Optimistic but I hope I'm enough for good to happen for the Country.

I think your last point hits the nail on the head, and is by far the most important and obvious. Every time someone gets really emotional and worked up in a discussion, I find that their view of the other side is a hyperbolic caricature at best. On both sides. Something like abortion is a perfect example. The people most fervent on the right constantly say things like "the evil left doesn't care about life and wants to murder babies!" and the most fervent on the left constantly say things like "the sexist right wingers want to control women's bodies!". Both of which are so clearly not each other's actual views. If you can't even phrase the stance of your opposition in a reasonable way, you're not going to get anywhere. That means you don't even understand what they think, let alone why. How can you even think that you stand any chance to change someone's mind in that position?

What makes polarization bad? There was polarization in the civil war because one side believed that slavery was ok. Taking a middle of the road and roach "don't be ideological" is in some ways far more deceptive and ideological. At least ideological people actually make claims about things they say they know about. Yes they might not know everything, but they can also be crictized for their viewpoints. A more "neutral" "I don't know everything approach" is trying to avoid that difficult conflict, even though its arguably a key part of democracy. Yes people don't know everything, but it's equally deceptive to pretend as if you aren't as biased as everyone else either.

Part of what fuels people getting upset about politics is when supporters of a particular political party (doesn't matter which) call their opponents derogatory names. For example, in the wake of EU membership referendum in the UK in June 2016, people who support or supported remaining in the EU are called names like "remoaners" or those who wanted to leave the EU were called "Brexiteers" by supporters and opponents alike. In my view, yes no democracy is perfect, but what is needed is what I think of as the Ronald Reagan approach. While I disagree with the policies that Reagan stood for, the fact that he didn't speak down to or condescend to his opponents lead to people being more likely to come together after a campaign. All sides of politics are guilty of living in an echo chamber of others expressing the same beliefs as their own. Putting it simply, yes people have every right to express their views, but everyone needs to see how the "other side" views the way things are to at least understand where they are coming from. Going back to the EU referendum in June 2016, both those who voted remain and leave wanted the same thing, peace and security in the country, but each side saw it from different perspectives. In my opinion, the campaigning in said referendum was unprecedented in the amount of fabrication and fear mongering from both sides in the campaign. Small wonder that on the eve of the planned withdrawal of the UK from the EU, it is still a highly controversial issue

I volunteered in High School. I could have volunteered for either party because I had read and listened to the opinion of Senators, Representatives and Presidents from both political parties and it seemed to me that people mattered more than party. I was immediately accused of being dishonest when I claimed to believe that people mattered more than party and so my volunteer days were limited. I needed to focus on personal development and not worry about Politics and issues. School forces us to learn what teachers and politicians want us to learn in any case, To be beneficial and successful - and success in life is important - I need to find something I want and something I actually enjoy. Competition makes us want to win and we see winning as red or blue... one team or another. Sports and athletics are important... as long as we remember our own performance in sport. And in that light - realizing that the players on the opposing team are all better than me .. being a fan or fanatic is not so important than pushing myself to greater development. I get angry with myself over poor performance.

I also feel like a big part of it, although that might be my economics background, is the zero sum aspect of politics. Often, political decisions come at the expense of one group to the benefit of another (taxes, drug legalization, same sex marriage etc.). This is especially true since democratic decision are pretty clear cut - if 51% voted x and you wanted y, you're getting x. So obviously people fight about it because having the other group "win" can literally come at the expense of your own group. This is why I love trade (other than my econ nerdiness). It's a positive sum gain where both parties win - maybe we should debate on how to make politics positive sum, too.

Hi, Mr. Beat... Two guesses about why people get so worked up about politics... 1) Someone doesn't fully UNDERSTAND the other person's viewpoint. Not AGREE with, just UNDERSTAND. 2) Someone cannot wrap their mind around how that person can justify those viewpoints. What seems best to me seems like anarchy and chaos to someone else, and vice versa. Their viewpoints seem as though they espouse those positions simply to agitate, enrage, and anger me, thereby making them seem "alpha" and "dominate" in that they got me to break/snap.

Both sides have a lot of stupid people on that end though. You could say the same about the massive amount of people who talk about how stupid SJWS are all the time. The left has their hate for white nationalists, the right has their hate for SJWs. Really just another look at people being dumb no matter what they align with.

But if we keep our religion at home. keep our religion religion in the closet, keep our religion between us and God... then when we come out we have a fight that's common to all of us, against an enemy who is common to all of us..." -Malcolm X Many people want to debate topics rather than helping out in person. Such as feeding the poor and needy or providing environmental services. We may rather debate on how the system should solve poverty, but rarely talk about how we ourselves can solve that issue. What many people lose sight of is their individual responsibilities. This is in favor of fantasizing of systematic ways of solving issues. If everyone decided to get up and do something (give their time, labor or money to support a cause) rather than whining about it, we'd achieve world peace. Politics is a mere distraction from what we should achieve ourselves and rather than tribes screaming in each other's faces all day, we can all try and work on solving an issue together individually.

It doesn't help that popular media incites and exacerbates that anger. It perpetuates a relentless parade of "We're always right and they're always wrong" and we're at a point where policy isn't discussed and emotional tirades are the norm. People tend to stop at "RaCiSt!" or "BiGoT!" and there is no more conversation beyond that. Twitter is a great example of this phenomenon.

When one political party believes in the purposeful genocide of humans., I simply can't listen to them. I have to draw a line somewhere in my morals, and that is where it is. Some things are just not negotiable.

Only times I get angry with politics is when a corporation commits what should be a multiple felony count offense, then gets away with it due to corruption of government, or when politicians pass laws that would actively harm large numbers of people ... for everything else I'm issues-oriented, trying to figure out how government could best benefit its people and the environment, while looking for supermajority polling support from the people on those issues to press them forward into the public political will ... those issues prioritized: getting big money corruption out of politics, forestalling accelerating global warming, alleviating wealth inequality, remedying systemic racism, passing single-payer Medicare for all, fully funding necessary infrastructure spending, passing sensible gun control regulations, ending the wars, etc ...

I think this is the biggest problem with American politics now. It’s that we pick side instead of focusing on the issues. Politics instead about feelings it’s about reforms that make our society function. The people in power divide us so that they can accumulate power to themselves and ignore our basic needs. I don’t like either party because of this and the whole idea of left and right wing is ridiculous and unstable.
@arlonfoster9997

I agree with you I can’t stand either party they do nothing for us. We should have listened to Washington’s warning. The issue between Israel and Palestine is a running gag in my family as it is a constant foreign policy issue they talk about and they generalize that all Palestinians support Hamas which I don’t buy into their generalization. It’s like if I speak up my disagreement they may act as if I left their tribe which is not true. Similarly in mutual disputes between my mother and former friends which these feuds have nothing to do with me and I am not taking sides on that, my mother originally said “don’t let this affect your own friendship” but then much later she said “you’re taking my side” as if I don’t have a choice in the matter. Yes it’s natural for us to love family but I am also a individual with my own individuality I can be friends with and form friendships with whoever I please or relationships with relatives even if they have been horrible to my mother in the past, I’m just saying.

Personally, I don't think partisanship is the large problem. Most places in the world have political parties, and a lot of these countries are way more civil about politics than we are. I think polarization is the huge problem. A lot of that is partisanship and tribalism, but a lot of it also has to do with people just not being informed enough. I think America has to realize that we are all in the same boat. I think this video is great because it is a completely objective view. Well done. That being said, I'm a Patriots fan. *Come at me* .

Mr Beat: “in reality the more context and knowledge we have about both sides of the issues that divide us, the less emotional we are about politics.” While I agree that this can sometimes be the case, the vast majority of the time when I learn more about either side it just makes me angrier/sadder/more emotional. I rarely learn something new about politics that doesn’t make me want to claw my eyes out. Our system of government is failing most Americans so I believe my reaction isn’t so crazy.

I really enjoy this video and I think I might need to watch it from time to time as I find I start to get angry! It brought to mind some thoughts, though that I'd like someone to give me some perspective on. One question I have is how does advocacy come into play? Education and empathy are both important values to me. We should always try to learn more and understand more about others (and policies, and everything). At the same time, I think it makes sense to land on a side of issues. That's how voting happens! And for some issues near and dear to our hearts, advocacy can promote very positive changes for individuals and communities. Sometimes passion and strong conviction are what get the job done. Another thing I was thinking about in a similar vein are people from marginalized groups who have enforced positive change directly because of their anger. Two points I was thinking about on this issue are that polite discourse has not historically gotten marginalized groups their rights. They had to fight for legitimacy. Additionally, I think that for a lot of issues, it is not realistic to expect individuals affected by particular policies to allow someone removed from the affects of a policy to share equal weight in the conversation. There are a lot of reasons to support one policy in favor of another, and not all reasons are created equal. Some people are disproportionately affected by certain policies, and I don't see how they can be asked to come to the table and "hear me out" when I come from a place that has little to lose and everything to gain from my side, and they risk so much more. That cycle of invalidation of marginalized people by people in positions of power is, I think, another source of the anger we see for sure.

Since the 1960s, politics has created discord amongst people in this country to the point of violence, far more than in the 1860s with the War Between the States. People interpret the politics as personal, when you attack their beliefs, they feel you are attacking them. Not to be biased, but Liberals more than Conservatives tend to feel that way. Another issue is the people representing us don't really always have our best interests and might only listen to corrupt, powerful special interests. How can you expect to have a good discussion with someone with other political leanings when the person they vote for doesn't actually care about their constituents and actually makes it worse for all parties? You can have good discussions, but will that change the mind of the most corrupt, far-leaning people to consider opposing viewpoints? Nope.
