You mentioned that events like this one would not happen in New York, because "Universities that I know here are completely closed to anyone who is not either student or staff." But this is an absurd statement - NYC universities and colleges frequently host public events. And that's setting aside the library system, the public foundations (and the private foundations that host public events), the museums, art institutions, and so on. I've been to many myself!
I feel technology is making us lazy and soft and vulnerable. There needs to be a balance. I don't begin to know about all of the world's problems but in the United States the problems are many, massive and multiplying rapidly. With all of the riches in this country how do we continue to tolerate: racism, hunger, abuse, homelessness, trafficking (slavery), shootings, disrespect for people and property, the neglect and abuse of animals, etc. etc. etc.??? 😢 It's overwhelming and seemingly hopeless. Where do we start Mary Jane? On a happier note, the images and music in this video were just lovely. ❤
P.S. You mention that a conference like vicino/lontano 2023 could not exist in America, but conferences and symposia like these occur frequently in both private and public colleges and universities across the county. Specifically, in the liberal arts institutions.
I said New York City, not America. I talked about what I knew enough. Universities that I know here are completely closed to anyone who is not either student or staff. Even to simply get into the lobby of their buildings they have electronic turnstiles. (I know because I did try to get involved into the cultural life of universities.)

However there is a difference that I think Mary Jane was trying to highlight. Vicino Lontano is made available to all, it is a town event and it is of easy access to people all ages and status willing to partecipate.

I was chatting with a man sitting next to me on a flight to Texas about 2-3 years ago. He said he lived in the Houston area and was an expert on water. He had a PhD but I forget in what. He informed me that Texas is running out of water and he is working on a solution involving creating condensation to make water. I wonder if this came up in the talk you attended on drought?

I do not understand why "the functioning" is so bad, or even considered a "betrayal" of ourselves, or making equal with a work of an machine. We communicate with the outside world on the basis of constant exchange with others. Without a functioning, we would have not so much to exchange. Simply "to exist" bring very little to the others. Without your yearlong functioning as a producer of the YT programs, who would be interested in your existence? How do you see it?
