Without watching the video yet: You get excited for the idea of a new set. You window shop the new set and imagine how awesome it will be once you paint it. Then you buy it and get that dopamine from 'owning' the new set, but when it comes time to paint, you already have a backlog or you're too busy, or you maybe just lost the motivation for it after that dopamine of buying it.

As soon as I can find a place for the unopened boxes stacked in front of my monitor and on my keyboard, I am going to watch this and explain to you why I 100% need these still shrinkwrapped entire armies!

I used to get this much due to addiction, fomo, and being to wrapped up in the games constantly wanting new units. Also a group that persuaded impulse buying and feeding the plastic crack addiction didn't help. Worse part was the price and feeling poor. I still get stuff rarely but only second hand and stuff i 💯 want.

Regarding the Corvus Cabal (and other Warcry Chaos Warbands from GWs announcement), these kits have not actually left the range, that was a miscommunication by GW. You can still buy them if you go to the Warcry Section of the Warhammer Webstore. The announcement simply said these kits are leaving the Age of Sigmar range. That means you will not be able to play them in AOS and they will not be packaged for AOS. They are still part of the Warcry range though.

It's shocking how similar our GW collection is. Except you have a lot more cool models from different brands, and I have 3 full under-bed storage bins of the entire unopened Imperium Magazine collection. Your collection is far cooler.

That's an easy answer. We buy because the hobby has the most exposure than it's ever had and we constantly see guys in videos showing off the latest models. I bought into Imperium for a bit, but quit because it was a lot of stuff I didn't need, but kept going for a bit, because the price was right. I'm looking to sell a lot of my stuff and keep just the GW board games I enjoy. Maybe I'll even play them. And we shouldn't limited ourselves to calculating what we spend on just minis. Paints, brushes, tools, etc. aren't bought as often, but they do incur a cost.

Yo brother! I have share my story but keep it short. Things look cool! I’d buy them, hoping I’d use them. Kickstarter was a bad pillar for this, you spend $130 - 1.5 years later a box of stuff shows up Well the 3rd shipment was coming and told my friends, they said “I’d love to paint some mini’s” Thus, the painting party was born! The first one was spent putting stuff together, priming, folks brought their own stuff, and by the end of the night, I got 11 mini’s painted…. Not good enough, so 2 days later I hit it hard, solo, 5 hours in and brought it up to 120 total, fully painted minis for D&D, then I just had to base them Then I could not believe how much I got done! So I kept going through it, after 10 days, a dozen+ hours, I have it up to 220 total miniatures painted and based Then the shipment of new stuff showed up…..

I feel that. Ive recently forced myself to not buy any more minis until i can get a good chunk of my backlog done. Its been tough, but ive managed so far.

For space marines, if you’re looking for a hack to avoid painting a billion of the same things, I’ve made an Unforgiven army, so, Dark Angels and all successors. No reason you couldn’t do this with a different chapter/legion (I guess it’ll also depend on who you’re playing against, and if you want to use specific rules some chapters are easier than others [Black Templar might be a little tricky, Dark Angels and Blood Angels work pretty seamlessly, as far as I can tell]]. 😊

Nice job being honest about your horde. Like what your wife points out at the 1:00:00 mark, my personal problem is the 'other stuff'. I got into the hobby 2 years ago and have bought FAR too many different paint brands (Reaper, Citadel, AP, Valejo, AK, Monument Hobbies, GSW, craft paint, rattle cans, etc...). Just paints and brushes costs much more than my pile of potential. Add lighting, shelving, space, tools, nippers, mixers, totes, etc... its my 'problem' that I fight.

I have 2 unpainted Dominion boxes too. Lulz. In my defense, it was only 125 for 1, and I think 115 for the other, and I was thinking; "even if they change editions 'I' can play 3rd at home by myself, if needs be".

I have the same problem with my 3d prints but when my bins get too full I start giving them away to friends and randoms until I'm back to a respectable amount. Its a win win, You feel good by making someone happy and they feel good having something new to work on. However my minis cost me like .68 so i don't mind giving them away I wonder If I would give them up so easily if I paid the prices you was paying.

I started the hobby last year, sold off most of what I bought because I get paint paralysis just due to the fact that I have a ton of stuff sitting around waiting to be built. I'm lucky enough that I don't need to try to get whatever discounts I can on models so I can just go to my friendly local game store and only buy the minis I want/need at that time. It costs more in the long run but I'd rather actually build and paint my stuff you know?

This videos are done just to feel better. You get the same dopamine burst of talking about a project going to be done than actually doing it.

I only own primaris raven guard but it is a growing army. No forgeworld or firstborn. About 14k points worth so far. I am often tempted to get other models but I wont get anything but raven guard until they are 100% done. After that I will get space marine characters from other armies and paint them as raven guard so I can use my war dollies as any space marine army 🤘

Ooh, I also meant to say - this approach gives a heap of storytelling possibilities too. Like, there’s this DA successor the Penitent Blades who basically use Ultramarine colours, so I’m using a Marneus Calgar that I got with the Imperium magazine as their chapter master, and my headcanon is that they’re deliberately styling themselves like the Ultramarines to piss off their brethren 😂 (also also - an Imperial Fists + successors gets you yellow + Black Templar + a bunch of wild other options…)

Man, I do not have confidence we'll ever see the second half of Darkest Dungeon. I tried painting up some of Wave 1 to try and gain some joy from it, but still so mad about being essentially robbed.

To get my shame down i have a simple rule. 4 to 1. I have to sell/paint 4 kits before i can buy one. In one year i have reduced my shame down by 50%. The final goal is to have zero shame and then its a 1 to 1 ration. Build and paint one before i buy one.

As someone who quit in 7th edition and as someone trying to get back into 10th warhammer 40k i find myself rushing to buy certain boxsets like leviathan, indomitus or deathwing assault out of FOMO, the prices have only gone UP so buying for future usage has made me more inclined to buy something out of fear that it wont be around anymore when i do want it or itll cost so much more

1 week of income per year is not excessive hobby spending, IMO. Sure you'd get more value from your money by only spending what you need, but if you ultimately get through all this stuff and enjoy it, this is not crazy amounts spent. For this to be true though, you have to get through it.

I make music, and we have a similar issue. It's called GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome. We see the latest doohickey and think "I NEED that doohickey!" and then a maguffin is released and we think "I NEED that maguffin!". It's a never ending curse. Maybe you have MAS - Model\Mini Acquisition Syndrome?

I think some of the reasons you didnt continue painting the models echoes the sentiment many players have. Where the rules changes so drastically it can sap youre enjoyment very quickly

My Advice: Sell everything! That's what I did. Also don't start saying "I'll get too it soon" bro of u have more than 50 models and u keep buying more, you won't, that's how you get to 100s of models sitting in boxes being forgotten. I only play Warhammer 40k and 30k (killteam too) and I sold off everything and started completely from scratch. Take the money you make back to start a new army, just one. and set out to have the simple rule of "don't buy the next kit until the last is finished" another good rule is the 1 week rule. If you see something you wanna buy wait a week, and if your still keen, write it down on a list. then once your ready to buy a new kit, grab it off that list. After you've started fresh its just about not impulse buying and going crazy. The easiest things about piles of shame, is there is always somebody else out their wanting that kit you will NEVER use. also if you know a friend who wants a model or smth, you can always give them away as presents. I had a bunch of half painted alpha legion stuff I was never gonna use, so i just gave it to a friend who loved alpha legion that couldn't afford models.

Why do we buy models we clearly do not need? The truth is that we only need food water and roof over our heads. We do not need to buy any models at all, So if your going to buy one you may as well buy them all. I feel no shame at all at my pile because I have forced all the shame and the blame in to the very first one that I bought.

sell some at a loss and once you actually realize that loss it should help curb the urge. Also remember do you spend a bunch of money on booze or other shit. everyone has a vice .

Same reason we buy books we don't read, games we don't play or any number of other pleasures adults shelve. We're driven to consume by capitalist society, sold on a lie that we'll have the free time and energy to enjoy things when we're not working to afford them. Now, we can afford them, sure, but who has the time or energy? I think its telling that the hobby is thriving largely because of people who can afford not only the hobby, but monetize the hobby via youtube or the like. That's just my two cents on the idea.

1:20 seconds in and I'm going to say, without having watched anything else, that the reason is simply: Someone else controls your source. IE: There's a cool mini, on a shelf, how long is it going to be there? I don't know! I should buy it NOW so I have it LATER for whenever I feel like doing something with it! Dunno if you went over how many of your minis are no longer available, but it is an important psychological data point and one that companies use, either through past experience, or "Limited Time Offers!" to get you to spend NOW regardless of your actual need.
