Fans of Doctor Who are in a unique position right now as we look ahead to the start of two new Doctors. David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa represent the past, present, and future of Doctor Who, and I think this year’s 60th Anniversary and the upcoming Series 14 are an opportunity to embrace all three.

I fully agree that "Rose" is the best jumping off point. That said, my first episode was "Utopia" and it still blew my mind even with next to no prior knowledge. It had a real "starting in the middle" kind of feel where the characters' dialogue gave me enough context to understand what was going on without actually holding my hand and explaining it to me. I actually still kind of relive that feeling when I watch that episode even though I know everything now. I've also been obsessed with the Master ever since! haha

I think "Blink" works as an introduction to the concept of the series - "watch this one episode and you will know if you are even interested enough to dive in". But it won't work as a starting point if you want to learn the lore etc.

It's a pity that lot people recommend to skip season 1, it's what got me into DW and it's also great to rewatch lightly, without caring much for big stuff and plot arcs and stuff, just good one time adventures with a bit of lore now and then. Starting from Tennant, the "look at the hyper-intelligent goofball" seemed to be more and more prevalent in the doctor, though they skipped that with Twelve which went back to the more serious doctor for a bit. Eccleston's doctor felt real, like a character with a past that haunted him. They continued it with Tennant (as I assume they'd always planned for Eccleston's Doctor to have been the one experienceing those stories had he not left BBC, this makes sense), but Eccleston's delivery was great.

RTD is a huge name in the TV industry for a reason. He's really good at it. He seems to be very aware of all aspects of his productions, and works with other incredibly smart people. They seem to be running a really tight ship over there at Bad Wolf. I also think that as a writer, RTD is someone who tries to top himself. I think you're right about him finding the repetition boring, but combined with that producer side I really can't imagine he'd just do Rose 2. Except he literally has another Rose and another Blonde teen companion. I've just been hoping that there's more to that than nostalgia. It would be sort of crazy if Series 14 *wasn't* a new jumping on point. I guess we'll see.

We just have to hope that not too much of Series 14 hinges on what’s come in the 60th. It seems Rose might become a recurring character in Ncuti’s era, so we may be back to a “if you want to enjoy series 14, watch the 60th. if you want to enjoy that, you need series 4…”

My suspicion is that he will use these Tennant and Tate episodes to say goodbye to the previous eras, fix any regrets he had from his own as well as (hopefully) mistakes from Chibnall, and set up for a reboot. Bringing them back right away and then getting rid of them will actually help resolve a lot of the tension from fans and put much less of a Tennant shadow over Gatwa, because fans won't be constantly asking "Is Tennant coming back?!"

The moment in the newest/final preview trailer when NPH enthusiastically says "Wordlwide premiere!" and we cut to black and then fade up on Ncuti opening his eyes is thrilling. The entire trailer suggests to me that we get the most accessible old favorites -- Donna, Kate, Beep -- and exciting new faces like NPH and Ncuti -- in a fast-paced 3 parter that anyone with or eithout prior knowledge can appreciate. I don't feel there will be too much exposition, and Donna, Donna's mom, Gramps and Kate are all appealing stand alone characters you can fall in love with even if you've never seen them before; they are truly some of the strongest characters of all of New Who. Plus David Tennant is extremely appealing in everything he does. I'm optimistic that the millions of Disney+ newcomers will be thrilled. (And I have a very good feeling about Ncuti's "reboot" Doctor.) Thanks for a great video; I'm subscribing.

I agree with the assessment that Rose is the only real jumping on point that would legitimately work in terms of new Who. Series 1 is an incredibly accessible and straightforward run of episodes that requires zero context or prior knowledge when going in, and the introduction of core elements of the show's lore during the series (and the rest of Russell's era) is done really well, you don't need to have seen any previous episodes in order to understand these elements. That said, I can imagine people jumping on with episodes like The Eleventh Hour or The Woman Who Fell to Earth (considering how many American viewers came on board with Smith's era, the former clearly works in that regard). And the vaguely anthology-like format of the show does mean that you can theoretically jump in at any point; I mean that's what happened with me (my first episode was Dalek, and then I watched the odd episode here and there before becoming a regular viewer starting with Rise of the Cybermen, before working my way backwards from the start of series 1). If a viewer is enthusiastic and interested enough by the show after a random episode, there should theoretically be nothing stopping them from going back and catching up on what they've missed, regardless of how much stuff there is to watch. That said, I do think the show needs to clean the slate every couple of years and make the show accessible and approachable to new audiences, especially after the previous episodes had gone incredibly deep into the lore and continuity (as the previous showrunners' eras had all done). Hopefully Ncuti Gatwa's first episode will provide the kind of fresh start that the show really needs right now, with very minimal continuity and a more straightforward back-to-basics approach.

I think there is a point you make in your comment that is more important than you think. New Who was written in a way to try and pull in American audiences (I think that is why my first episodes were of Matt Smith). I have watched some of Old Who, and it just doesn't appeal to me...that might be an unfamiliarity with the "Britishness" of it. Regardless, I just couldn't connect with it the way I can with New Who (even though I've had to have subtitles going because some of the accents are a bit much for this American to understand). I think with Disney behind it, perhaps a bigger American audience is in the cards...

@@Joe_Brennan_ and then i think 11th hour works better than rose does for a 2023 new fan simply because series 1 is SO 2005. i think its cheesiness, bad vfx and naughties charm is very endearing but i think it could be off putting to someone that is used to modern television. i think 11th hour on the other hand still feels more than current enough, the moffat era achieves a sort of timeless feel that dates it a little less than the rtd era, probably thanks to the fact that it is much less concerned with the modern era and home lives of the companions
@whophd
@whophd 9 месяцев назад
RTD went to great lengths in 2005 to respond to fans complaining about the lack of continuity in “season 1”, which infuriated Classic Series fans (that had just recently had their BBC website removed from the “Cult” section). As annoyed as they were about the lack of continuity in “Rose” - which is another way to say it was a clean cut, perfect for new viewers - they were confused & upset again & vindictive by the time Season 4 came around and RTD completely undid what seemed like his own policy. Of course, what RTD actually did was build the template that MCU used for Infinity War, climaxing in 2008 while giving viewers a way to jump on in 2005. You can’t have your Infinity War + Endgame moment 30 seasons or 45 years away from your compulsory jumping-on point. This is why no sane fan of the classic series has been able to recommend jumping on with William Hartnell, even after streaming technology made it possible. The colour episodes would be an easier option (and no missing episodes at that point) but even that’s insane … and you could try recommending the JNT era but that feels like a lot of parallels to the Chibnall era idea. PBS historically, of course, just replayed the Tom Baker era over and over, and made it a show about the Fourth Doctor only; if you saw the start of Robot or end of Logopolis, you might have questions and complaints though. No, it’s just never been sane to recommend any jumping-on point for the classic era, and it’s always tasted better in snack-sized buffet-grazed linear-broadcast repeats. About the only exception that will EVER exist has been the Twitch stream of the entire classic series over a few weeks in 2019. That was monumental, and felt like a binge-watch on steroids, with a global watch party in a chat room, around the clock. (They repeated each day in 3 timeslots, so up to 8 hours of episodes a day - a lot of people would dip in and out through the day, sneaking in some viewing at work or home). The emotions when the series ended were phenomenal, because they had a little “retrospective” to the black and white era, and being 3 weeks ago felt like half a lifetime ago. Most people seemed to have watched most of the episodes. It was absolute Doctor Who Foie Gras.
@SuperFunkmachine
@SuperFunkmachine 9 месяцев назад
RTD really went in with the knowledge that a lot of people had stopped watching it 20 years ago. Maybe if you where hot on continuity you recalled McCoy getting shot an turning in to McGann. So he only to bring back the basic bones of continuity, not go in to details about it.
@barongerhardt
@barongerhardt 8 месяцев назад
I would highly recommend the Hartnell episodes. The very first episode (mini-arch) is a great intro and several of the other arches really nice to see the origin of so many ideas that defined the show. After that intro arch, It jumps right into the Daleks. Most of the arches are very well self contained and can be skipped if it isn't working for you. Ones with long running characters like Daleks or cybermen are more worth watching. Also the last arch with Susan and first changing of doctor are historic moments. For some silly fun, don't miss "The Web Planet."
@whophd
@whophd 8 месяцев назад
@@barongerhardt It’s more of a case of recommending a few rather than trying to push through a season at a time. Even the best episodes have William Hartnell’s character gaslighting the companions and emotionally manipulating them. Was it just the thing back then? No idea.

Great video as always Joe! I do think the _"smattering of some random standalone episodes you like"_ approach does have merit if only to show people the wide variety of what the show can be. I know I needed that. I started with _Rose_ and it's a great first episode, but it didn't convince me to watch. I then sat in on my mates watching (in no particular order) _Runaway Bride, Blink, The Unicorn and the Wasp_ and _The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood._ It wasn't until I randomly walked in on _The Magician's Apprentice_ & saw a sunglassed Peter Capaldi playing electric guitar on a tank and flirting with his homicidal best friend that I decided "I love this, I want more context for this" and got started proper with Series 1. I would always recommend a new viewer to start with Rose. It's the perfect starting off point, as it's where I started when me and the fam sat down in Wales itself to watch the first episode of 'Doccy Who'. After Series 1 aired/during we rented out some iconic Classic Who on DVD, like Earthshock, Dalek Invasion of Earth, Remembrance of the Daleks, etc. You don't have to have done any homework when you begin with Series 1, it's excellent. I'm glad you didn't touch much on the 'Blink' as a starting point because it makes NO sense, you barely get the Doctor and Martha, and the NEXT FEW EPISODES ARE Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords! That's basically introducing ALL of the main characters AND an old villain in Utopia of all places! Absurd, I say! I would never ever ever reccomend Series 11 as a starting off point, as it's pretty MIDNALL and then you get LORE BLASTED in Series 12 and wouldn't know what the hell was going on. how do i end these comment things? haha nice vid jboi!!!

I think you just spent 18 minutes proving what I've been saying since Eleventh Hour broadcast! I counted that as the beginning of the second era of NuWho, Woman who fell to Earth was the third. We're now entering the fourth, I will wait until the first episode of series 14 to determine where the 60th fits (possibly 3.5)! Bar River and then Jack (and as you said Missy, although her being the mystery woman for a whole series probably helps then) they're pretty stand alone. The way Jack shows up in Jodie's era is barely different to Sarah Jane turning up, "old friend, that's all you need to know" as they only mentioned once he was immortal and he never even died! The simple way I've always counted it (as I was 10 when I invented this system so it is basic) is 'New Doctor and new companion together' (this usually includes new/ change of showrunner but I didn't understand that when I was 10!)!

A couple years ago, my parents wanted to watch some episodes and it was an awkward discussion to explain why I wasn't putting in the DVD for S1E1 haha. Would be really nice to have a more recent jumping on point. Also worth noting that aside from Capaldi, Gatwa is probably the biggest name going into taking on the role of The Doctor, so it's more important than ever to make the show accessible. Was a bit worried when I saw "new Rose" and the thumbnail that this would be about Ruby Sunday as a new romantic lead.

Anything you can sit down and watch with your family without having to explain anything is a real plus. As for the title and thumbnail, was hoping I'd be swarmed by people telling me NO or YES based on that alone, but clearly the clickbait hasn't quite taken effect yet.

The problem is the show isn’t as accessible especially to actually watch being locked away behind 3 paywalls so if u told someone to watch blink or the 11th hour as a starting off point then they would have pay for a max subscription if they don’t get a physical copy of that doctor’s era then if they want to see classic era they would need a Britbox subscription if they especially if they are in an area where Pluto tv isn’t in cause they have a classic era channel then to see the new content outside the United Kingdom u would need a Disney+ subscription so in an attempt to make the show more accessible they ultimately made it less accessible especially with the classic era being so expensive to acquire physically

I actually think The Eleventh Hour is a shockingly good jumping-on point. It introduces a new Doctor and companion all in one episode, and a strong one at that. There’s not a ton of callback to S1-4 right away, so you don’t feel like you’re missing too much. It’s also aged pretty well, whereas parts of Rose are wonderfully campy (mostly the computer scene). Furthermore, S5 also has the rapid-fire lore episodes. The Eleventh Hour is a great introduction to the characters and the Tardis; The Beast Below shows the depth of the Doctor’s age, isolation, and mercy; then as soon as S5E3 introduces the Daleks pretty well (Dalek is a better episode to introduce the Daleks, but it’s still good). Episodes 4 & 5 are fantastic! Weeping Angels, River Song, just a very strong 2-parter! I partially disagree with the argument that you have to see Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead first). While it is preferable to seen River’s sacrifice in the Library, they never meet in order and that’s part of their dynamic. Even if you don’t know about how her story ends, the episode spells out the idea that she’s “someone from [the Doctor’s] future,” heavily hinted to be his wife - “Mrs. Doctor from the future.” I’m not saying S5 is a better jumping-on point than S1E1, but I do think it’s still a very strong option.

My first ever episode of Doctor Who was Human Nature/The Family of Blood. Even though the Doctor isn't quite himself for the majority of that two-parter, and we spend much more time with John Smith, I got enough information about who the character is and what this show is even about to become invested enough to go back and start the show properly with Rose. Of course, there was less than half as much New Who to catch up on back then, so it was a far less daunting task.

My new take is that the perfect standalone series is Series 10. My original take was to start with Blink, then making your way to Series 1. Blink served as the "teaser" standalone (the "here's what the show can be" episode) to show any interested party, then the new fans would begin their journey officially with Rose. The excitement of having seen Blink gets you invested to get to the episode again "the long way 'round". Meet 10. Meet Martha. Etc. Along the way, School Reunion sends the audience an open invitation for new fans to look into Classic Who as well as the spinoffs Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. But I agree the timeline has gotten too large. Which is why I now advocate for the following: The Return of Doctor Mysterio serves as the new "teaser" standalone for interested parties. And Series 10 serves as the new fan's jumping on point. With an even split between episodes that teach mechanics of the show and dip into some of the New Who lore, Series 10 is a fantastic standalone series that leaves you ready to travel further in either direction. Twice Upon a Time even leaves the fan with a choice. You can leave what you learned about New Who lore and continue on to Series 11-13 (or wait for New-New Who, as I call it) if that's what interests you the most. OR you can go back and explore New Who (or even further back to Classic Who or the spinoff Class) if that interests you more. OR you can appreciate what you saw and call it an end there, having received a complete story that is well representative of the show.

Regardless of your previous DW experience the 60th special and 14th doctor are going to be something without much of a bridge to the previous series, I'm so curious how RTD is going to pull off this new doctor but if it's anything like his work in the early 2000s I have high hopes it will be a good place to start even if it's not a new Rose

One of the problems with the Chibnall era is that BECAUSE Moffat had been so heavy on fan service, Chibnalls stripping it back in the way you describe with a real lack of "old stuff" in the first series, meant taht a lot of the fans just went mental. (Who could have seen THAT coming?) This meant that people jumping on and enjoying it were made to feel like idiots. It just wasn't made specifically for the people who felt it should be made for THEM! And they became angry. In twenty years, Chinalls era will be regarded the way that (1970) Series Seven eventualy was after initially being absolutely hated by fans because of the complete change in style and direction. 25 episodes... three SEVEN PART stories???? Set entirely on EARTH?????? With NO Time Travel???? And NO recognisable monsters from previous series. Not even The bloody Daleks???? And The Doctor works for the MILITARY now?????? Now... "Series SEVEN???? Oh... man, what a classic!"

@andrewtomlinson5237
@andrewtomlinson5237 9 месяцев назад
@@SpeedyDemon1 There were a few duffers, but the writing was on a parr with the previous 4 or 5 series. The lack of a major arc in S11, the new cast, and no returning monsters along with a woman in the role, were all elements that pissed people off. The only parts of the production that were done badly is that there was some questionable casting and the three companion model wasn't handled well enough. The first series was a typical first series for a new cast and crew. Writers and directors were unfamiliar with the new cast so you get inconsistencies, we saw that in S1 and S5 as well. S12 was good. And Flux will eventually become a classic when all the neck beards have stopped finding excuses for being pissed at Chibnall casting a woman, and not writing specifically for the Convention Fan Crowd like Moffat had spent the previous 4 seasons doing.

@@andrewtomlinson5237 I somewhat agree with the writing being on part with the last few seasons, I think the only difference was that there were a good amount of standout episodes that were fantastic with moffat in every season, despite a majority of the seasons being so-so. The thing is (in my opinion) many the best doctor who episodes ever were from those kinda “meh” moffat seasons, but with chibnall, I feel the peak of his episodes are only ok. There’s no real “iconic” episodes from the chibnall era that enhance the overall quality of seasons. I think it’d be hard to look back on the era fondly due to this in the way many fans might see the original season 7 now. Honestly this conversation has been pretty interesting so I’m looking forward to seeing your take on this
@andrewtomlinson5237
@andrewtomlinson5237 9 месяцев назад
@@SpeedyDemon1 I'm sorry, I have to disagree that there were no stand out episodes. Prisoner of the Judoon was exceptional and Haunting of Villa Diodati was brilliant. S12 had only one "poor" episode and that was Praxeus. And most of Flux was really good, some not so much, some fantastic. I think a lot of people had made up their minds after S11 (many had before it even started...), and the sort of people who made up all sorts of theorised excuses for the entire "Silence Must Fall" mega arc started using the term "Poor writing" as a means by which to attack everything after S10, and it kind of stuck as a catch alll way of simply saying "I didn't like it because it was too different". I didn't like most of what happened after S5, under Moffat. It wasn't aimed at me. I don't care if villains become friendly and join the team, ("Rusty" and "Handles"???) or the same returning characters come back over, and over, and over, just to please the fans. It went through a massive phase of over sympathising with the bad guys, to the point where a Space Minotaur who traps people in a nightmare world to live out their most terrible phobias until it kills them, because it feeds on people's fear and suffering is treated as "Aww... poor thing... it's not IT'S fault! It's only its Nature to cause untold human suffering... it can't help itself... Oh that's so sad..." Sorry??? You just described the bloody Daleks! Oh... wait..."Classic Episode!!!" But I don't disaparge the quality of the work the people put into it and what came out, (OK the Minotaur was jusy ***ing stupid" and most of the overacring plots were senseless fanwank but...) I just... Don't Like It. Some badly wirtten stories don;t make the whole thing BAD! In fact the episodes I tend to like from that era are the ones the ConFans don't. Like Beast Below, Vampires in Venice and Curse of The Black Spot. Time Heist and Mummy On The Orient Express (apart from the massively frustrating set-up and zero pay-off of the ending...) Those same people who defend the storyline where the Silence go back in time to give humans fire and the wheel, then spend thousands of years designing and exerting influence over all of human endeavour, so that one day there will be a space suit they can turn into a lazer powered murder machine and put a brainwashed baby into, in order to kill The Doctor, because... something... complain that Flux was "too complicated to understand". Not because it WAS too complicated, but because they had to invent an intellectual argument beyond "I simply didn't like it and its not fair that its not aimed directly at men and my friends any more.". They also use phrases like "poor cinematography" seemingly without knowing what it means. The Timeless Child story, to these people, would have been "GENIUS", if Moffat had written it and wrapped it in 3 episodes worth of expository Fanwank featuring characters from Big Finish with constant references to stuff they already knew. (and introduced a hidden Doctor played by David Warner or Richard E Grant). The quality of the writing isn't an issue, it's the volume of fanwank, "nods" and ****ing Easter Eggs that matters to them.

I still think "The Eleventh Hour" is the best jumping on point we have. "Rose" really focused on her perspective and the big fumble of "The Woman That Fell to Earth" was that it focused mostly on the Doctor, giving us no reason to care for the Fam. TEH did the clever thing of shifting our focus between Amy and the Doctor (and briefly Rory) as the POV character, giving us a look into all three of them in the first episode.

One of my hopes that I don't expect to be fulfilled is that Ncuti Gatwa's first episode this Christmas will be a Rose-esque jumping on point. I mean it's a new era, new doctor, new TARDIS team with Millie Gibson's Ruby. RTD loves the down to earth family antics with previous companions, the families and friends of Rose, Martha and Donna, so I have no doubts that we'll be introduced to Ruby and her family or friends or some personal situation that drives her to travel with The Doctor. This new era has potential to be a whole new kind of show, like RTD1 before it, redefining Doctor Who back in 05, RTD2 has that potential to mildly reinvent Doctor Who as a whole. I think the 60th specials will be a terrible jumping on point for people personally. The villains are from an obscure Doctor Who comic, and the main villain The Toymaker is from back in the 1960's with the very first Doctor, plus all the main supporting cast besides Rose Temple-Noble (Yazmin Finney, playing Shaun and Donna's daughter) and Shirly Anne Bingham (can't remember the actress' name, my bad) are from previous series including Kate Stewart, Donna, Shaun, Sylvia, Wilf (R.I.P. Bernard Cribbins), and probably more. These specials basically require Series 4 which also requires The Runaway Bride and that basically needs all of Series 1&2, and The Toymaker would be enhanced by knowledge of the episode The Celestial Toymaker from the 60's but probably won't be required. Ncuti will be introduced at the end of episode 3 of the specials but probably won't be integral to his character and upcoming series. We'll have to wait and see however

Bringing back Tennant and Tate has to be the second main example of Chibnall bottling it. He couldn't think of a Christmas idea so Moffat had to stay on and hurl together a second Capaldi swansong (a remarkably good if superfluous job given the circs). In this case he and Whittaker bailed out on the eve of the 60th anniversary. You can't just introduce a new lead and general setup on that kind of occasion. It requires nostalgia and there just wouldn't be time to do the introduction mambo as well. And no, I don't believe for a second that Chibnall, having got his dream gig, deliberately decided he'd only do five years and jump ship before an anniversary. There's professional omerta at work and his "plan from the start" fiction saves face, but he was pushed. They know it, we know it and they know we know it. If any further doubt lingers, consider that Jodie's last is Chibnall deliberately trying an anniversary story. On a non anniversary.
@ThetaSigma-vu1sk
@ThetaSigma-vu1sk 9 месяцев назад
Regardless of whether this is true or not, Jodie wouldn't have been able to film anything as she would've been very heavily pregnant or had just given birth when they filmed the 60th.
@friendlyotaku9525
@friendlyotaku9525 9 месяцев назад
This is blatantly a conspiracy theory that has no basis in reality. From the start Chibnall decided he only wanted to do 3 series' and this is because he wanted to finish Doctor Who before his sons took their A-levels as he wanted to be there for them. Him and Jodie made a pact to leave together. So no, neither of them were pushed and also... Power of the Doctor DID air on an anniversary, the BBC's Centenary - their 100th anniversary!

It's a matter of whether you believe the reasons he gave. I don't, you do - that's fine. But the undeniable facts are: he's loved the show all his life and always wanted to work on it; it's the most prestigious gig on British TV; his run was hardly a success; he only did three years; the BBC announced his successor to undermine his last shout. That, frankly, is enough to draw inferences.

Man, what a small world. I am literally working on the exact same idea for a video and for the exact same reason because I’m such a huge fan and I haven’t talked about the show in so long and a lot of people are asking me where to start without having to watch everything. Yours was very very well done, and I definitely subscribed from here. I started with Rose and I’ve gone back and watched everything from classic as well at least what we can watch so as you know it’s a very difficult question to defensively answer but I think the 11th hour is probably the closest right now but by the time my video is released, my opinion might change, as you said, the future may be the best as well.

My first episode was Love and Monsters so I think that tells you everything you need to know about jumping on points They’re irrelevant if you fall in love with what Doctor Who actually is. A truly awful first episode, but within 2 more episodes I was treated to Army of Ghosts/Doomsday which for many years was my favourite Doctor Who episode. I’d only had 4 episodes with Doctor and Rose and I still cried when they separated. That said, I think the best jumping on point for any new fan is an episode with a Dalek in it. Doctor Who often has monsters of the week that are a bit of a wet fart (I rewatched Lazarus this week and good grief the CGI aged appallingly) but there’s something about those iconic dustbins that makes for the best hero vs villain stories if you’re a new fan

I honestly think this was perfectly said. As _vastly_ much as I love every single doctor you've mentioned and every single companion (in some cases more than you personally do, and that's great, because we're not the same person), I 100% agree that the best starting point should and will hopefully be the next series. I personally jumped in at a random point during 10's run and had no trouble figuring out what was going on, and you could likely do that at many different points, but I think the best way will be given to us with this new little almost-reboot.

The Eleventh hour is a great starting off point. That's where I started, and the only thing you're really missing is one previous episode about River Song, but when i watched season 5 initially, I loved her character even without having seen that previous episode. Season 5 has a great intro, good episodes and the angels early on (which is what REALLY got me hooked). People who enjoy it will quickly go back to watch from season 1 or 2

Great video! The first episode I saw was The Empty Child. It was weird, scary and kinda silly. I loved it! In Season 5, I don't think viewers meeting River here for the first time would really be a problem as they explain what you need to know about The Doctors first meeting with her. Of course it would be better having seen the Library episodes but I don't think it would be a big deal if they haven't. Plus they can always go back and watch them later and I don't recall it requiring knowledge of previous episodes. It might feel a bit odd to jump in at that point in Tennant's era but I've done the same kind of thing with a few classic Doctors and it was fine, you just gotta go in accepting that it'll be different than what you're used to.

You've pretty much summed up my thoughts on a new starting point. My introduction to the show was the Series 3's Lazarus Experiment, which made the rest of the RTD era although enjoyable, kinda weird cause I'm looking at plot lines and conclusions I should have had more context for.

Excellent video, and great point about how streaming has changed things and made it harder to casually stumble upon a series or dip into a random episode. It also made me wonder if this new era will be separated from the rest of modern Who when it goes up on Disney+ (or even on iPlayer too) to make it seem more appealing to new viewers.

I'm old school. My first story was 'The Hand of Fear'. Talk about jumping in mid-stream. I hung on, and still have my Tom Baker scarf. With New Who, 'Rose' is still really the best place to start. I dropped out partway through series 12, thanks to Chibbers. The show was actually cancelled due to ratings. Only RTD coming back prevented it. Sadly, I don't think even he can repair the damage.

I think you’re right that Rose is the perfect jumping-on point (and without it, the series revival probably wouldn’t have done so well). However, as you’ve proven, you can jump in at any point and still fall in love with the show if it clicks for you. For you, it was AotD; for me, it was The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. I wandered into the lounge at home and my dad had it on. I thought he was watching one of his WW2 documentaries and was about to leave when he stopped me and said, “It’s the new Doctor Who and it’s really good! Come and watch it with me - you’ll love it!” So I sat down, watched it with him, and loved it, as he predicted. There was no iPlayer in 2005 so I couldn’t go back and watch the first few episodes - I didn’t see Rose until much later when I caught it on a BBC3 rerun, but it didn’t matter. I still loved the show and watched it religiously from then on. Having said that, however, I agree we do need a new ‘Rose’ to entice viewers back and gain new viewers after the disaster that was Chibnall’s run, and who better to craft a new jumping-on point than RTD? I guarantee he’ll make something special out of Ruby Sunday - let’s just hope she isn’t a Rose clone!
