Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "the Doctor", an extraterrestrial being, to all appearances human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes while working to save civilisations and help people in need.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture,[2][3] and elsewhere it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series.[4] The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film titled Doctor Who. The programme was relaunched in 2005, and since then has been produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Doctor Who has also spawned numerous spin-offs, including comic books, films, novels, audio dramas, and the television series Torchwood (2006-2011), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011), K-9 (2009-2010), and Class (2016), and has been the subject of many parodies and references in popular culture.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor, and in 2017 Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the role. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally. Each actor's portrayal is unique, but all represent stages in the life of the same character, and together, they form a single lifetime with a single narrative. The time-travelling feature of the plot means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet.

I think it's a number of different reasons really: 1. Tennant without a doubt is the most popular Doctor to the general public since Tom Baker, the popularity has never really wavered and he is probably the most marketable Doctor, and a good way for the bbc to make money off. 2. David is known as a lifelong fan of Doctor who (it was his ambition to become the Doctor since childhood) and leaving the role was a very upsetting time for him (he cries a lot during his end of time video diares) so he will be excited to come back in any stage cause he loves playing the character, whether that be a TV comeback or big finish (which as you say is doing an awful lot). 3. Which brings me to the point that because of the pandemic he is free a lot of the time to do Doctor who related things and can bring out more characterisation for his Doctor and keep him fresh in the fans minds. it is because of this why i think his popularity will never waver and why the BBC and expanded media are and will continue to promote him and his Doctor Apologies for the long winded comment.

It also makes sense for Tennant to be the most human because in Time Crash he admitted that the 5th Doctor was his favorite past life. From what I've heard, Davidson's entire arc was trying to fit in with the humans only to realize that he would never be one.
@AFriendRemembers
@AFriendRemembers 3 года назад
I wouldn't really say that's a real clear arc for the 5th doctor. If anything his theme is one of showing the strength in vulnerability and compassion. He isn't as 'out there' as other doctors but its not because he's trying to blend in.

@@justuspariah oh, no worries. I'd say he acts the most human but it's not because he's actively trying to but because he doesn't seem the need to be as 'macho' about his alien Ness as other doctors. The weird thing about Tennant is, for all the qualities that make him human mentioned in this video (tenderness, love for humanity etc) he's also incredibly arrogant and overbearingly smug about his superiority when it he gets the opportunity to be. Scenes Tennant strides into with a smug grin Davidson would enter with a hesitant smile. I think 10th admires 5th for just being comfortable in his own skin whereas every other doctor has shown clear signs of egomania at one point or another. In that aspect, yeah, the 5th is the 'least alien' so I could see people taking that away from him

I totally agree with you. I'm watching DW for a year and a half now and I immediately fell in love with 10. He's just so charming and relatable, he's warmed my heart every time he was on screen. Rose was the best companion ever happened to him and you kinda saw that just by looking at them two. When they said Goodbye to each other, I was so sad because they were my favourite duo in the whole shows era. They've loved each other even if he never was able to tell her. Even if he never went back to tell her, except for the Meta Crisis. I'm not just in love with 10 himself, I'm also in love with David. The way he's portrayed The Doctor, this wonderful wise man with two hearts and hidden grief about his home planet, it made me change. Maybe you've felt that too...he made me fall in love with him. And I'm so grateful about this. Not just in the name of 10, but in the name of David too. His pain is my pain. His grief is my grief. His love is my love.

Ten is "my" doctor... I have also enjoyed the rest since too, though to varying degrees (mainly due to the writing at the time). Now obviously DT is a outstanding actor but my theory as to why Ten was so popular to the Mass Market is due to the fact that he played the romantic lead. Ten was likeable and human but also deeply in love with Rose, he mourned her loss and though he tried to" move on" with Martha, Donna etc you could tell she was always in the back of his mind. He even chose to spend his last moments with her. Alot of people not necessarily into the SCi-Fi can relate to that - it gave him depth. Since then the Doctor has really had no part in the main romantic arcs of the show, mainly going back to being an asexual outsider to the shows other romances. The only exception to this being Clara for a couple of episodes pre 12 and River who was always treated as a mystery character herself and therefore not as relatable to the mass audience. Rivers romance with 11 always felt like something that was going to happen properly in the future and never really materialized until the latter half of her final adventure with 12. I think a good romantic arc with the next doctor when he/she is launched could capture the attention of the general audience who love a good couple to root for. I know the old school fans will no doubt disagree with this but then they are the audience who will watch regardless, the general audience will not.

My suggestion to BBC : Bring back Jenny. The fans I've interacted with have all loved Jenny and are pretty disappointed that not only she didn't get the spin off that was in talks but also that she was never brought back. Personally, I would have loved to see her in the 13th's era. I think she was on the animated DW series that came out after her episode but nothing on the main. That way they can keep them both low-key mysterious while adding the emotional drama. As much as I love 10, I don't see him as The Doctor. It's usually 11 and 12 (haven't watched the classic). But I think that the reason why the show hasn't worked season 5 onwards is because of it transforming into a show using sci-fi to churn out a complex narrative. As much as I love the concept, it just doesn't work for Doctor Who. It used to be a fun show one could watch to relax in the evening in front of the TV, but during the Matt Smith/Steven Moffat era, it does a better job at inducing headaches. And the plot became so focused on the companion with Amy. Interesting but doesn't work.

I will say though, I totally get the MCU Spider-Man comparison, but I feel that the 10th Doctor’s change to a more emotional and human person felt like it served a purpose within the context of the story, furthering the development from 9. With MCU Spidey, different continuity aside, the Miles Morales personality and content is hit or miss for me personally, and while it was good for the sake of change, Doctor Who at least has the benefit of the change being developed, albeit personified with a new face. MCU Spidey has the disadvantage of it being an entirely separate adaption, so it’s compared with with other adaptions rather than past and present continuity

I, personally, have not come across die hard fans who did not like Tennant's interpretation of the Doctor. The one most people dislike is Whittaker because, through no fault of her own, it felt like she didn't believe that she was the Doctor and secondly the dialogue, stories (lecturing people) and the locations have felt second rate. And then there's the aspect of changing the Doctor's back story (destroying 60yrs of canon) along with the gender, when the Book of River Song or the Doctor's Daughter would have been far better as a spin-off along with the success of the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. Tennant portrayal felt real and his eccentricities felt real so when he showed his human traits (which he's bound to have what with his age and the length of time he has endeared his protective services to the planet) it would not have much of a negative impact on die-hard fans. Yes, Matt Smith had a lot to live up to but each regeneration is different but his eccentricities really came to the for, much like the eccentricities of Troughton, and I think it was just the overly complicated story arcs that impacted the viewing figures (I for one didn't mind that). The story arcs, however, helped with tying much of the canonical aspects of his past present and future together in a well constructed manner. The problem for me was the Moffat and Chibnall era. Moffat brought in another great choice for the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), however, the writing seemed to deteriorate to Sylvester McCoy proportions (too much of playing the fool and this element of the show can also be attributed to the writers ). However, one other aspect of the McCoy era's downfall was what has clearly attributed to both Capaldi and Whittaker's short seasons and early departures. According to McCoy and script editor Andrew Cartmel, a number of Seventh Doctor stories were intended to satirise or protest the rule of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. McCoy told the Sunday Times in 2010 "The idea of bringing politics into Doctor Who was deliberate, but we had to do it very quietly and certainly didn't shout about it...We were a group of politically motivated people and it seemed the right thing to do. At the time Doctor Who used satire to put political messages out there in the way they used to do in places like Czechoslovakia. Our feeling was that Margaret Thatcher was far more terrifying than any monster the Doctor had encountered. Those who wanted to see the messages saw them; others, including one producer, didn't." One story mentioned as having an anti-Thatcher theme was The Happiness Patrol in which the tyrannical Helen A outlawed unhappiness and remarked "I like your initiative, your enterprise" as her secret police rounded up dissidents. The Doctor persuaded "the drones", who toiled in the factories and mines, to down tools and rise up in revolt, an echo of the miners' strikes and printers' disputes during Thatcher's first two terms in office.[1] Script editor Andrew Cartmel assembled several "angry young writers" such as Ben Aaronovitch and Rona Munro to produce storylines that they hoped would foment anti-Thatcher dissent. Regardless of what is right or wrong, depending on your political beliefs, by politicising the show it lost it's core entertainment values and it's sense of direction as a science fiction show. Capaldi's descent was started by Moffat and continued by Chibnall because, I believe, they knew what was coming and whether they liked it or not the next Doctor (probably a directive from the BBC) would be female (not the main problem for an unknown percentage of the fans) and the back story along with lecturing to the public (really bad move towards the hard core fan-base) would be what dragged the viewing figures to where we are now! The result? Whittaker is now leaving when the worst problem is, in reality, the writing. It needs to have more of a serious edge, the Doctor's backstory needs to be re-instated (possibly by showing that the Master orchestrated a clever plan to destabilise the Doctor) and less lecturing. Working class people don't need elitist idiots who probably don't even practice what they preach!

Tennant isn't just my Doctor, I literally moulded my life around his portrayal of the Doctor. I stole his haircut, his flippant wit and even his way of speaking! I CHANGED THE WAY I TALK BECAUSE OF THIS MAN. I literally can't remember what it was like before, my voice will forever be part-Tenth Doctor. If that doesn't tell you how impactful this guy was, I don't know what will.

Tennant is the best known. He was the doctor when most americans became aware of DW. He also has the most amount of time and fondness to come back. Eccelston never really liked his run and Matt Smith seems to want to avoid to much of a connection so he is not type casted. Most new fans i find love the 11th and then like the 10th but do not go back to watch his run then drop off with the 12th. My favorite is the 11th though i grew up in the 80s loving tom baker. But after smith and t baker my third favorite is tennant.

It was the best with the ninth doctor, that was a literal perfect season. The tenth doctor was consistently amazing, then the first 11th doctor season was pretty great, and it nose dived and never got better. Not to say it became god awful at first, but it got there into the 12th doctor.

I'm not really in the camp that wants a more human doctor, I like the character being mysterious and alien but I can understand wanting to bring the casuals back on board. I have many friends who dropped off with series 6 and it's bad tropes and all over the place story arc and they never came back to the show since which sucks even through the 50th and series 10 where massive steps in the right direction. Really, I'm all for the BBC trying to get Doctor who back out there but if I've learned anything from the sonic series, they need to be careful and not bank on nostalgia as a long term thing.

It's not just the BBC trying to revive the golden years of the revival, Chris Chibnall seems to be doing it through his own writing. Series 12 was, yes, undoubtedly more engaging and better written than Series 11, but it makes we wonder whether that was primarily down to Chibnall taking ideas from past episodes, predominantly RTD episodes. I've just uploaded a video on this and the number of similarities is concerning. Spyfall takes heavily from The Sound of Drums, Blink as well. Fugitive of the Judoon obviously makes a lot of references to Smith and Jones, but Utopia as well with the whole Ruth Doctor reveal. Can You Hear Me? feels a lot like The Nightmare Man from SJA and the Dream Lord from S5. Then you have a lot of similarities in the finale that are obviously inspired by The End of Time: Yaz and Graham's "poignant" heart-to-heart, and Chibnall basically plagiarising Rassilon's speech for the Master and bringing back Tennant's "What? What? What?!" cliffhanger. Did Chibnall see how divisive Series 11 was, panic, and start going back rewriting past episodes into his own to try and generate another golden era for the show? I wouldn't be surprised in all honesty.

I am not one of the mass market people. Im a hardcore fan watching since I was 10 in 2006 with a massive modern who and classic who collection. And I love the 10th doctor he is still my favourite doctor. So im always on board for more David Tennant. I don't think the show relied to much on him during the smith or capaldi. Because The show still had pretty good viewers and most fans liked them as the doctor. Jodie Just isn't well liked as the doctor by the Hardcore and the general public aka mass market. Yea she does have her fans but seen as the Chibnall era has crashed and burned its not really helping her incarnation. As someone who stopped watching 2017 and doesn't care about the new era. And after what they did with the timeless child nonsense. I will only watch the show again if they decanonize the Jodie and Chibnall era. Because what ever comes after will continue to build upon what they did and I don't care for that. So the only glimmer of hope I have to paying any attention to the franchise is them bringing back past doctors I actually give a damn about. In audio episodes with Tom Baker Peter Davison And Christopher Eccleston. Or books a game with David Tennant. And not some cosplay doctor like Jodie Whittaker who couldn't even be bothered to watch old episodes or do some research before getting the part.

It's pretty easy. It's not about the "doctor". It's about the writers. Russel T. Davies knew what kind of stories to tell, how to use Moffat to write groundbraking standalone episodes. It's always all about the writers, because they dictate absolutely everything.

I don't see a lot of people having a problem with this, but Matt Smith is my least favourite Doctor after Jodie. I don't think the issue with Matt Smith was that he wasn't Tennant - though it is possible. Tennant was just irresistibly charismatic. But for me a big turn-off for Matt Smith was the blurring of lines on consent and overall ethics. Amy Pond was a bit too... sleazy for my taste. Not just the lusting after the Doctor while engaged to Rory, but also being called "The Legs", and so on. It got better for a while and River Song saved that arc somewhat but then again the weird nudity/hologram thing with Clara being seen naked without her consent, him appearing for dinner naked before her family... wasn't this supposed to be a kids programme? Matt Smith's run is the only time when I thought the male gaze comment by Jodie Whittaker was justified. Many like Matt Smith too, but for me, his run was not something I'd want a child watching - I'm fairly indifferent to children choosing to watch nudity or sexual content if they want, but I would not insert it in content meant for children and take the choice to seek it or avoid it away from them. It is role modelling a dismissal of consent that got my disgust. Metacrisis Doctor also regenerated naked - because he was just a hand without clothes - but he wore them immediately, not paraded naked in front of Donna whether she wanted to or not.

Whilst 10 is the most popular Doctor since his time on the show it should be noted that the largest growth in audience for Doctor Who, by a long way, globally was the 11th not the 10th. And the 50th during 11's run broke records for the largest global simultaneous broadcast of a tv show ever. So whilst your friends may have stpped watching after 10 (and boy did they miss out if they did) more people around the world watched after 10 than during his run. By the time we get to Capaldi it seems more that it had just been on air for a long time rather than a drop in standards or writing, in fact Capladi's era has some of the best writing in Nuwho, some of its best direcitng and editing (See Heaven Sent, World Enough and Time and others) and generally is acknowledged as having the best actor in the lead role the show has probably ever had. However in Jodies era the acting is wooden and stiff, the writing is poor, the direction and editing sloppy at times (looking at you Orphan though its not alone) the story arcs devisive and the social messaging so on the nose its like being punched in the face with it. I'd say the Chibnall era is the first era of nuwho where the response is not solely down to the length of time its been back on air, but to its lack of quality. And as such its not only lost viewers it snot seling the goods, hence the choice to bring back the Doctor most people associate the modern era with, Tennant. He sells merch, its that simple.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to assert that the 11th made Doctor Who an international success. Tennant is the one who made the show blow up in the rest of the world. People didn’t just discover Doctor Who when Matt Smith took on the role. Tennant made it mainstream and very popular, slowly, in the rest of the world. Then he left. When Matt Smith came on board the audience was already there and hooked on the show. They didn’t just start watching the 5th season. They watched the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th season first.

@@sakaya9878 Youre statistically wrong, 11 had a larger global audience than 10 ever had. And espeically in America it was not until the 11th Doctor and Moffats era the BBC began seriously marketing and pushing the show in the US with billboards, public appearences and the cast doing the chatshow rounds, including filming the first episodes ever on location Stateside, something that didnt happen in 10's run when Wales had to double for New York- due to international succcess by 11's time they were filming there for US set episodes. it was also not uintil the 11th Doctor that episodes in the US and Canada were broadcast on the day of transmision in the UK, also boosting viewing figures. 10 is the highest rated NUWho of the modern era, in the UK. But internationally the show got much bigger with 11.

I was a doctor who fan when I was a kid and David Tennant was the Doctor and I haven’t been since. I was born in 2002 and so it was towards the end of his reign I (2009ish) I caught up and watched them all. I think the reason why his doctor was so good to see on tv was because he was the flawed hero,he could be funny and charming to the eye but deep down he was hurt,angry and upset.He wasn’t perfect and it was as if his doctor he was growing not only has a doctor but as a person with emotions. I started to watch the matt smith doctor in the first series and I always felt that lack of connection because he felt more solid which is good for the show as I believe was an extremely popular doctor and he was the right person to move the show forward but I watched of his never really felt the aspect of a flawed person which left no real desire to carry on watching.

i don't really have a favourite Doctor. i've only seen Nu Who, so i can only judge them, but i really like 9, 10, 11 and 12. Jodie played her part well but 13's morals are fucked beyond belief (preferring to leave the spiders to slow deaths rather than killing them quickly; chastising a guy for pushing someone from a height after arming bombs in the person's skin anyway; and feeling that the only problem in Kaboom! were the murders and not the dystopia where there are enough resources for everyone but people are desperate to be able to work to survive, despite the Doctor generally being opposed to rampant capitalism) however, i don't like most of Russell T Davies' episodes, and the only companions i liked were Jack, Martha and Wilf, which means that i'm often not enjoying watching 9 and 10, despite liking their characters and actors

Many have said it before, and Pup is right, but it's not just how The Doctor is written seperately. The who-universe defines The Doctor, and who she is. First and foremost she is in opposition to or in fearing to become, her enemies. The Daleks, The Cybermen and the rest of the rouges. It is known. You can do many things with the (arch)enemies hounding the doctor, but the one you can't do is anything without them.

They need him because the series should’ve died when he and RTD departed. Simple as that. The programme after both left is not the same thing. It’s a different entity entirely and one nowhere near as compelling or popular. I could tell from Smith’s very first episode that the programme I was invested in was gone. I think David’s Doctor treating the “death” as unbearable is more emblematic of the entire series as a whole rather than just the character. I think they knew that even if Smith was good it wouldn’t be enough for a large sum of people. It’s not the Doctors that are the focal point for why it was greater back then, for me. They were great of course, but it’s not as if they “carried” it. It’s the entire thing. The companions, the less Americanised production, the music, the atmosphere, the relatability, the honesty. All of it. It was and will always be a pocket of time when it truly was the best thing on English television. I’ll keep my blu ray box sets of that 5 year time period forever and revisit them sometimes. That, and only that, is Doctor Who for me. Anything after is a poorly received BBC America reboot that no one wanted, as far as I’m concerned.

I don't think this is the reason they're bringing back 10. So far Chibnall has shown that he is incapable of running the show, his episodes before he became showrunner are regarded as the worse, the writing is horrible, and the worse was timeless child. They didn't need to bring back 10 during 11 or 12s run. (With the exception of the 50th, but it was an anniversary special, so it made sense.) They are bringing back 10 because he's the fan favorite, so it will get sales and viewership up again. Also the show never recovered after David left? The show had it's highest viewership during 11s run!
