Very Informative, and if people are having an issue with losing psi due to the frost that's an easy tip to just simply swap out the tank. Great video 👍
Just for those that don’t know in order to lower the temperature of a liquid it requires high pressure which is what’s happening in the tank so with that pressure even waters freezing point will go lower than 32 degrees.
A trick I literally just used before watching this video is I pour hot water over the tanks and regulator to keep things flowing smoothly. I live in my RV and use two, 100 pound tanks for supply and in this current weather we've been having, it's currently 4 degrees F outside, and I was awakened this morning at 5:00 am. to the sound of the heater trying to fire but it couldn't. I went out to check and sure enough, everything was frozen. I couldn't even turn the switch over valve on the regulator! I went inside and filled two, one gallon water jugs with hot tap water, my water heater runs at 140 degrees, took them outside and thawed everything out. I just poured the water over the regulator, line and the tank currently in use as it wasn't even near empty, and before I used up the first gallon, everything went back to running fine.
If you manifold two tanks together you now are pulling less from each tank thus slowing the rate of the lpg going from a liquid to a gas therefore evading the freeze ups.
Yup ive had trouble with those freezing up too trying to run a 30k btu torpedo heater in my garage...at the cabin we had, there was a 500 gallon/pound big ass tank and we did not have trouble with that running the furnace up there north of brainerd..by the way how much snow did you get? Got 4 inches here in the city but Rick got slammed with snow ❄️..thanks for the video!!🍺
Happened to me today around 25 degrees. I have heater for my patio. Propane started frosting over really good. Was pretty low so swapped it with another one. After awhile that one started to frost over to. Like it was sitting in snow. What can I do to keep them warm.
Would it not help just to turn the temp down to allow the tank to "breath" a bit allowing it a break? Ive got a little buddy heater with the 16oz tank. I'm just chilled and don't want to turn my central heat up, so I turned it on. I usually run it on low, but I turned it up and 30 min later noticed it was acting like a gush of wind was blowing at it continously... I thought "maybe it's empty" but noticed ice build up a little under the center of the tank... FREAKED me out. I shut it off, came to YT to see what the issue was. Now I'm wondering, (after your great video) had I just turned it back on low, if it would have worked itself out? (Ran it for 4 hrs last night on low with no problems, same room temp)
@@MasterofNone2 Awesome! Thanks so much! It was actually your video that made the wheels in brain start turning! 🤣 Recent widow here, I'm not used to doing all this "man stuff" it amazes me all the info you guys can retain when it comes to working on ANYTHING! Needless to say, I'm on YT learning something new everyday! You may not realize it, but these videos are beyond helpful! ❤
@Rebecca Gaines First of all sorry for your loss Rebecca, I have heard both women and men say after loosing a spouse that they never knew all the things their spouse did. I am glad my video was helpful to you in any way. Thank you .
So sorry to hear about your loss Rebecca. I have heard that same thing from people before that they didn't know how much their spouse did until they passed. I am glad that my video could provide at least a small amount of help. Thank you for your comments, it means a lot especially to us smaller channels.
@@MasterofNone2 Thank you so very much ❤ I never took a bit if it for granted, I admired it really. Just wish I would have paid more attention when he was trying to teach me things like this, now. But, new subscriber here! You can pretty much count on my views! 😅💙
I've bought a portable Generator; that has Dual Fuels: 1. Gasoline or 2. Propane Gas. I am going to use propane instead of gasoline. And I will put the Generator inside a shed. Of course when the Generator is running; the inside shed gets very hot. Now a question? If I put the propane tank INSIDE the shed will not freeze up? Even when the outside is below 0 degrees? "Inquisitive people want to know!"? Thank you kind Sir for your answer.
It will most likely be fine Pat. The temp isn't usually the main factor causing the tank to freeze, it's removing gas from it faster than the liquid propane can boil off to gas. This is an assumption but I would guess your generator isn't going to be pulling gas fast enough for it to be a problem.
Your tank stores the bulk of the propane in liquid form while your appliance burns propane gas. When your tank freezes you are drawing the gas out faster then the liquid can boil off to a gas causing a pressure drop. The two ways to fix this would be drawing less gas or using a larger tank which allows more surface area for the liquid propane to boil off to a gas.
15 psi would blow up your grill lol. The pressure coming out of an lp regulator is actually 11-14" w.c. which is about 1/2 psig. Even if you had 1psig you would have flames that would be out of control and quite dangerous for a grill or any lp appliance
It doesn't have to be about the temperature outside of the tank, it's more about rate at which the liquid propane can boil off to gas. The temp of the tank at the point where liquid meats gas is the crucial factor. A larger tank is most important because it gives you more surface area.
