Why Does Everyone Love Anti-Capitalist Movies Now?

It seems like every movie that gets any buzz ends up being totally anti-capitalist: The Menu, Triangle of Sadness, Avatar, Parasite, Joker, the list goes on and on. Basically, the whole point of Squid Game is that capitalism sucks and that's the most watched show of all time. This definitely has not always been the case, so why is every movie woke now? And why are these movies so critically and commercially successful?
In my opinion, it's a natural result of the way content is created in 2023, and the attention economy as a whole. To illustrate that point, I compare and contrast the original Rocky, and Squid Game, which I think are actually quite similar.

The capitalist's sole goal is profit, whatever the cost. This leads to suffering and exploitation, but ironically it even leads to promoting ideas that apparently clash with capitalism itself, if there's money to be made in them.

But it's not. Belief in a Capitalist economy doesn't necessarily mean belief that the sole goal is profit. Morals are still a thing and if maximizing those profits conflicts with those morals, morals that would be in a Capitalist economy, then maximizing profit would necessarily go against the morals that we hold Capitalism up to.

I agree with you on the selling point of the attention economy, but I do wonder your opinions on how the popularity of anti-capitalist films works to progress any forward movement. Sure people don’t understand the endings since they are purposefully vague but do you think that more of this content is actually changing peoples minds?or rather just acting as a way for people to console themselves on their own assumptions if they agree, or ignore the idea completely if they don’t?
@Cone_vids
@Cone_vids Год назад
Thank you for always commenting, valued subscriber ;). This is a question I asked myself, and I couldn't really come up with a good answer, so I decided to leave it out of the video. In many ways, I think yes, it does a lot to drive forward movement. I think allegory gives people the tools to question all of their propagandized notions about how society functions. But for me, there will never be a better political allegory that drives leftist values than the matrix, and that didn't end up causing much political change. I do think the internet has absolutely changed everything by making it so easy to see everything wrong with capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, etc. So imo, it has done a ton to change people's minds simply from ease of access, but this is where I really feel that my own perspective is limited. I think young people are super, super, super woke per Capita and if people from ages 20-35 were in charge, we would have a pretty sweet society, but I really don't know where and why the disconnect is for people who have been driven further right by internet echo chambers. Like I fundamentally don't understand how anti-vaxing can be so huge in the modern day, so I don't feel comfortable saying whether or not the momentum this kind of pop culture zeitgeist creates is actually actionable, if that makes sense. I will say that I think a good anti-capitalist movie raises the temperature (at least when it comes out), and that can always help drive forward momentum when other political circumstances align, but I think these media kind of just make their own little pendulum of political interest that can be harnessed, or can very easily not be. And I don't know how much longer this will go on, but luckily I don't really see it as being an insincere thing. Like I don't think people are making anti capitalist movies as Oscar bait (except the menu, which I secretly dislike) which is honestly a really good sign. So to summarize: I think movies being made from a genuine place of dissatisfaction with the status quo is super promising, and can do the difficult work of getting people comfortable with political ideology. But, I don't think they really do much politically, definitely not by themselves. One final note though: we don't really need movies to drive action. The contradictions of our society already create more than enough motivated individuals to make change, and the movies I think are more useful insofar as they can get "normies" comfortable with new ways of thinking. That is to say: the people passionate about improving the world will always exist, and they won't need movies to teach them, but the movies being there will help everyone else get comfortable with radical ideas, which I think is great, and provides those revolutionaries with fertile soil.
@Hyperbion7

I think the liberal strategy of driving meaningful political change through having a trans character in 7 frames of the new Star Wars is hilarious. Though having generations of people grow up with all their myths functioning as trials for bootstraps strong-men probably does effect their self reflection. I think art generally reflects reality and not the other way around. But it's hard to gauge considering: if you're WATCHING something, it already has the okay from industry. James Cameron had to make point break and 1.5 Titanic's to get the okay for avatar

I'm specifically thinking of Boots Riley who directed the amazing Sorry To Bother You (2018) which is an amazing movie showing the loss of humanity in a capitalist society but it also tackles other subjects such as race relations. Anyway in that movie the main antagonist is a company manufacturing a lot of things who treats its employees terribly... And now Riley is producing a show with... Amazon.

This was a great video! However… I would like to ask how is representation gonna solve capitalism? If 10 poc / trans/ gay / etc people would be the wealthiest we would still have the same issues. Just because the boss is for example a woman, she isn’t gonna give her employees a bigger paycheck… Why? Because her primary goal is to get more money and not to improve society. It doesn’t matter what gender / race / sexuality the rich / owner class have, their goal is to stay in power and nothing else matters. It’s a class war, everybody should rise up against the rich and not only against rich cis hetero white men who are mostly in America anyway, other counties have no rich white men, yet their population is still poor compared to their richest people. Anyways, representation is cool but that in itself solves nothing. All working class people have to work together, pointing out only the rich white men alienates white men even if they aren’t rich.
@Cone_vids
@Cone_vids Год назад
Thank you very much for watching and the compliment! Thank you also for sharing your thoughts, as I think they are valuable. I agree that representation does not fix capitalism, and that it can very easily be co-opted. What I was more getting at is that for one, this is not just representation (i.e. not just actors of different races, genders, etc.) this is about media that actually comes from intersectional perspectives in and of themselves. I think we can agree that people who are intersectionally marginalized have a much greater tendency towards understanding the myriad structural injustices of society, capitalism included, and therefore they have a greater tendency towards offering critiques of capitalism in media--along with all of the other injustices of course. I myself am a cis white male. I'm not trying to alienate cis white males at all, I think we have plenty to offer to the fight for a better society. However, I do feel that there is a cultural shift toward being critical of capitalism that is largely being driven by the creation of media by people who are not cis white males, and that initially those creators were finally been able to break into the mainstream because capitalists realized that marginalized people want more content that they identify with. So yes, I think representation has done a pretty good amount to help people question capitalism, and that is in addition to all that it does to lower hate against marginalized people in general. I don't think anyone would argue that it is a panacea, nothing is.

Until internet decides to root for them because they are rich and what every people imagines to be like Bateman. Then we have movies like 'they live' and 'parasite' to really say how ugly capitalism is.

I think the way to resolve the inherent contradiction with Rocky is simple: consent. Rocky is exploited by the mob to work as muscle, and he knows the people he's harming don't want to fight him, so he's miserable. While Apollo is also exploiting Rocky to an extent, Rocky wants to fight Apollo, and vice versa. One job he's compelled to participate in, while the other job he wants to participate in.

What hits with people at any given time matches their sentiment. People put a lot of faith in capitalism as an economic system emphasizing liberty in opposition to communism. In this day and age, however, a new generation of people has become disillusioned with capitalism as the gap widens between rich and poor and the plutocrats choke the have-nots out of opportunities to make comfortable lives for themselves. I think that anti-Capitalist art will always be co-opted for profit, because it's impossible to work within capitalism without profitability being an important factor. But that doesn't diminish the message in most cases, because Capitalists don't think in terms of long term social change, they think in terms of exploiting the zeitgeist and profiting off of the now. So they don't care all too much what messaging is put in their products. It also just so happens that left wing writers make for better stories, because we like to explore humanity, while right wing movies tend to define it instead, which becomes inherently formulaic and boring. So our stories will always sell better and resonate more deeply with the average person. The trend towards anti-capitalist art is both reflecting and reinforcing the growing anti-Capitalist sentiment we see everywhere. I think, for all that people hate it, Matrix Resurrections actually did a really good job of showing how capitalism co-opting an idea doesn't inherently kill the idea, while showing how ideas actually die when people only ever see the surface of things.
@Cone_vids
@Cone_vids Год назад
Thank you for the comment! I agree that any kind of co-optation does not inherently kill the idea. I really hate the way that people sometimes talk about capitalists as if they're omnipotent so like if they start making money off of something then boom, all political momentum is dead and we'll never escape. They're perfectly capable of making blunders. Also, one of my hottest takes is that I actually really liked resurrections and I felt like it was an amazing argument against fervent revolt. To be clear i kept coming back to finish the video, however i feel with better pacing (and maybe a soft back track) you could of shaved 5-10 minutes off the video and still kept most of the commentary you had to share, The only reason i suggest this is due to the total watch time/engagement piece of the algorithm To be clear, i have subscribed and do enjoy your content, keep up the great work! ❤

You are a small creator and though the video lacks a better production (it would be great to add non copyrighted music throught it to make it more emotional) I sticked to the end because of the interesting way you connected concepts and explained them with good arguments, I as an artist was very inspired and took some of that to hopefully write and produce a great anti capitalist property that can connect with people, also i've subscribed, keep it up!!

Sometimes it's fitting when the movies kind of peter out. Parasite is a grim reflection on real life, so their not being riots makes sense. Squid Games ends with protag-kun deciding he's going to fight back. No we don't know what that fight is so it didn't really take a stance on shifting away from capitalism but I do like that he's deciding to fight back at the end. If you want a great example of stuff that starts off anti-capitalist and then throws all out look at a lot of Marvel shit. How frustratingly white washed, unrevolutionary, and the leftists are the bad guys even though they're correct, Falcon and the Winter Soldier was.

Also I like your take on how we got to this proliferation of anti-capitalist media.

I'm not sure why greed and inequality and exploitation are so closely associated with capitalism. Serfdom existed under feudal systems; apathetic exploitation is a quality that's even rampant in the animal kingdom. I think this video is interesting, but... In some ways, if you're going to introduce a somewhat contentious idea that's external to these films, it's at least going to be more digestible to build to it over the course of a whole video rather than briefly glossing over it in the intro.

Thank you for watching, and commenting! I think greed, inequality and exploitation are associated with capitalism, because they are fundamental to it. There cannot be capitalism in any way, shape, or form without some amount of exploitation. Being that I live under capitalism, not feudalism, I seek to criticize capitalism, because it sucks and we do not need it. As for why I decided to gloss, I did so because I wanted to talk about movies. I think most people who are familiar with the topics I cover do not need an explanation about why capitalism is bad; if they do, there are many, many, many resources already in existence that they can review. I for one take it as a given that capitalism is bad for a million different reasons, so when I watch a video about Anti-Capitalist themes, I don't want to waste time establishing that background.

@@Cone_vids Hey, thank you for taking the time to give such a thorough response. You don't need to answer this if you don't want to dive into it here, but, I'll ask anyway. Wouldn't you agree that there are also many resources that demonstrate that capitalism is not inherently exploitative and is a benefit to the world? When you make a comment like 'there are many resources people can review', it suggests that all of the evidence supports your idea, which is definitely not true even if you happen to be right about your conclusion. Economic principles are not settled ideas that you can just say "go look up the evidence for yourself" about, especially with such a bold claim as "capitalism is inherently exploitative". Making an agreement with others to exchange goods and services for legal tender is certainly not inherently exploitative of people, and while consumerism is bad for the environment, this is a byproduct of people simply becoming capable of exploiting their environment for greater comfort and satisfaction and is related to capitalism only insofar as capitalism is facilitating people getting what they want. The reason I brought up feudalism was not to say "What about this system that you're not criticizing?" It was to demonstrate that the desire to exploit one's environment is an (unfortunate) facet of human nature, not a byproduct of an economic system. And while your audience may understand your worldview, doesn't saying that they'll understand you imply that you're not interested in growing that audience? To me, the strange part of this idea is that you are making a contentious claim, but you're supporting that idea, somewhat, through talking about movies. I just can't really understand why you'd frontload the video with a conclusion that comes out of nowhere, personally.

Rich people making money off of making movies about how much they are ruining things “The Irrationality of Rationality / Lyrics Main Results Frank the new CEO had to answer to the board The board was getting anxious and the shareholders Were on the bed, legs in air, a$s cheeks open wide They were about to get fnked like it was their first time When one makes 20 million, 10, 000 people lose What keeps that one from swallowing a shotgun Dan the company man felt loyalty to the corp After 16 years of service and a family to support He actually started to believe the weaponry and chemicals were for National defence ‘cause Danny has a mortgage and a boss to answer to The guilty don't feel guilty, they learn not to Helen was living in her car, trying to feed her kids She got laid off from work and her house was repossessed It’s hard to think clearly when it’s negative some degrees Desperate people have been known to render desperate deeds But when she shot that family and moved into their home The papers read she suffered from dementia Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Michael John Burkett The Irrationality of Rationality lyrics © Wixen Music Publishing” I have to strongly disagree as I saw all of the finale to be rushed, but it rushed to go nowhere & even worse is that you watch John watching an absolute farce of a biopic & you see tears as it gets to a part that includes a characterization of himself in something he had to have enough memory of to know that was also such bullshit. Worse of all is the writing on the blank screen stating Gene as rotting in jail & Barry buried in honours. Sally was a horrible person too & she gets a free slate. The worst person in the show really being Moss’ old partner whom was as insecure as he was incompetent & in complete denial of both. That series made a farce out of a good cop doing her job & anyone whom watched to the end hoping for any sollis or closure was not only robbed, but very uncomedically were slapped in the face in the least dramatic way. Good show that got pretty dark, but then ended on a farce & shouts a loud middle finger at any idea of justice or truth. I wasn’t seeing enough laughs after the first season to keep being considered a dramedy. All & all just skip the last episode & imagine literally anything - even if it isn’t great - at least you aren’t striking to make more than teachers for less than adequate writing & never forget offsetting the cost of living for all those that make less than them. Remember that the more those in the middle go up, the less available/affordable by those whom make minimum wage. Instead of 99% rising up against 1% in this unfair system we just all play along & fight for our ability to go up while having no regard for all the people not getting raises right now & directing no aggression at all to the very few whom make a person’s entire yearly salary in just one (often unexplained) bonus with no limit to how many (mysterious¿‽) bonuses they can receive. Sheldon Cooper was right .... The Flash was just nine seasons of Goatman waiting us wait ten years for him to eat a can & Barry is looking like four (much shorter) seasons just to lie about the can being eaten. For shame all involved, for shame.

I've heard something along this said a lot, but the thing that I find curious is how the evidence for this isn't critically analysed in casual conversation. The book mutual aid by Peter Kropotkin goes over this in detail, even if it's a bit old and dated. There's just as much evidence for cooperation in our history and environment as their is for competition. That being said, recent (last decade) research in this field has shown that society is tending more to cooperation than it is competition. Since it is scientific research and not religion, it's not going to make commandments or anything about which people must obey, but it's pretty clear to most people that there are actually more benefits to cooperation than drawbacks, and vice versa for competition. Finally, to correct the record a bit, if your new to anti-capitalist spaces, it is going to seem out of left field if your unfamiliar with it, just let like attending 201 class when you haven't attended the 101 class. I would recommend the channel second thought, specifically his early stuff to get the 101 stuff. And finally, both trade and exploitation of nature are not fixed things, as shown by the development and regression of both over the years, which is most likely to continue. Rewilding of nature can be just as mainstream as logging. To claim that these are fixed and inevitable wouldn't just be ahistorical or unscientific, but to essentially have your head buried in the sand. And I would know, as a former Mormon. I will end by saying that there is a wealth of literature from varied cultures, races, ages, classes, times, educations and temperaments that go over the empirical facts and interpretations of said facts, that are most convincing as to the separation of how we currently trade, from HOW we can currently trade without making things worse. Just like it's incomprehensible to the believer how someone can be an atheist..... Until it happens to them, the same can be said about being convinced against capitalism. But don't take my word for it, go talk to an anti-capitalist IRL if you can.
