Why Does Everyone OVER REACT to EN Voice Acting in Wuthering Waves?

Don't get me wrong there's still a lot to improve on, and voice acting is on that list. But to me, people make it sound like English is scraping forks and knives on a plate. It's not like that at all, it's more so like... The teacher pop corn picking the kid who can't read, then telling him to read a paragraph from the history book. Kinda hard to listen to. But you know that with some help and guidance they will be fine.

Again I'm hoping that over time they can iron out some of those spots in the early game, since that is where most of the negative sentiment comes from.

I like the EN dub of the game and I like the direction it's going now. I also agree that all they need is a better voice directing to make it good. Great video! Also thanks for showing the part with Yangyang, since from the start I don't see Yangyang's voice _that_ problematic, per se

Yeah I generally enjoy the EN side of Wuthering Waves. Jiyan, Geshu lin, Camellya, Aalto... A lot of the characters sound pretty good. I think part of the problem was consistency in delivery. Pair that with really hawk eyed individuals and 1 mistake becomes 500 really quick and that all adds up to bogging down the total experience. I didn't even mention some of the audio bugs and text glitches too. That also adds to that growing tally.

The English voice over is fine people. Stop fussing over it. Don’t risk it getting taken off. I very much like having it, especially for convenience.

Yes, sometimes it still sounds a lot like a tea break. It doesn't really bother me because I see improvements, or rather hear them.

I'm not sure I know that phrase of 'tea break'... But yeah, it's nice hearing the improvements over time. I'm already a fan of Shorekeepers EN voice, but we'll need to see it fully in context.

I think it's the bad first impression. Yangyang in particular has a lot of the voicelines in Acts 1-3, and some of the longest; the weirdness in her EN VA stood out so badly because it's such a big part. fortunately my main team (m!Rover, Sanhua, Verina) have pretty okay to good EN VA, so after Act 3 I wasn't really bothered by it.

Definitely agree. I'm really really hoping they can find time to do re-recordings of Yangyang's lines to be more like 1.2. The writing I think is what it is now, but adding more dynamic vocal flow may help people get through certain pain points; like the dial, or explanations of the world early on. I wasn't super bothered/upset, but I took the mental notes.

as someone who has been watching anime (jp and others dub) since the 90's, i think we need to understand that jp voice acting industry is MASSIVE and OLD, so it explains the quality. the EN one is not as much. Kuro Games also decided to go with many UK based voice actors. i'd give them time. (also skip buttons exist, lmao, kudos to kuro.)

Yeah, I'm also not sure how much English language barriers are a factor too, but I'm assuming that's harder. Again I'm just hoping that as time goes on they can revise some of the old 1.0 stuff too since like man... Yangyang and F Rover are just robotic and I remember others asking if FRover was AI or not. To me that's not a good sign at all.

@@Vinsenneth did u hear about how F Rover's original EN voice actress isn't the one we have now, but the previous one was tied to some sort of H*Y* contract? i remember that being loud because people were saying, "oh nooo they need to re-record the entirety of 1.0 then!"

@@MagisterialVoyager Hmm no it doesn't right a bell to me. The only related thing was that VAs on the hoyo side were getting bugged because of false allegations that they couldn't play Wuthering Waves or something? As far as I know too it was only the EN side, literally nobody else..?

@@Vinsenneth I remember the GI EN VA’s rumour. 😂 One of my feet was still there at that moment. Anything can happen, really, because Asian contract can get hella weird, especially in East Asia, sadly. 😵‍💫 I don’t know whether others knew about the Female Rover situation, but it helped me with understanding why she sounded generally flat (?) in 1.0, at least, probably because she did it in a hurry after Kuro Games had to replace her quickly before 1.0 dropped.

I'm just finding out that people are saying the voice acting is bad ?? I mean, your opinions are valid but for me, i had no issues with it since the release. There were some monotone lines here and there but i can brush it off

Yeah that unfortunately has been the sticking narrative. At least for English. JP, and CN in particular no one has issues with. In fact a lot really like JP because a lot of familiar voices from anime and other games end up cross pollinating to here. I appreciate the English though! Flaws and all.

I'm playing in EN because I want to immerse in the story but it was a sleeper and feels monotonous. Instead of switching to JP, I would rather skipped. I maybe bias but the only voice I like their is for Baizhi since she fits her personality. She's the only reason that keeps me playing the game lmao. They should hire a better Voice Director or if none, they should've at least.

that's a writing issue, though, not a voice acting issue. personally I had a bigger problem with the narrative delivery and dialogue. I feel like there are teenagers out there who aren't geniuses but could write better dialogue than that.

@@redgoldcrown3990 I didn't include that narrative coz I might hurt the glazers here lmao. Anyway, aside from the En voice acting. The story writing was a problem too. I've skipped all the later versions coz the chapters 1-6 left a foul taste in me. Like I said, Baizhi is the only thing that keeps me in the game up until now lmao.

Yeah like I pointed out in my video the writing aspect leaks into the performance aspect. When you pair it with little voice directing, it can end up being really inconsistent and monotonous to listen to. You're not wrong. This is especially the case if the mindset going into the game isn't patient enough, which you do need to an extent. But that applies to a lot of games and how invested you want to be in not just the story but the world too. Again, I'm just glad it's already improved and I'm hoping re-records happen so that the 1.0 experience is better for newer people!

@@ArthurMorgan.1863 Isn't it a bit unfair then for you to weigh in if you skipped everything after chapter 6? You can't provide clear feedback or explanations of what is bad, or good. It's unhelpful to say that story or line delivery is bad if you skipped everything, because the idea of what it is is literally absent.

@@Vinsenneth Yep. It's unfair but I tried giving it a chance since the Changli release but I can't feel it anymore. I don't know maybe the direction of the voice acting really turns me off since I'm more immersed by this factor in every game I play that's why it's kinda big deal for me. Let's just say, I would rather listen to Paimon's yapping all day than playing the campaign. WuWa is like 80% combat & 20% writing. Let's see for the upcoming updates, I still play the game though because it only takes a minute to do dailies. LMAO. I always come back for Baizhi.

EN voice acting left a poor first impression because of Yangyang's issues and also Chixia struggling as a British person faking an American accent. I play male Rover and liked his voice work, but most people picked female Rover and I've heard it wasn't great. The problem is that this trio (FRover, Yangyang, and Chixia) are the main trio from the start of the game, so that's what stands out to people. All of them have improved drastically since those first few acts. Other EN characters gave phenomenal performances; Aalto was my favourite, and his banter with Encore was amazing. (I'm so excited for more of them in 1.3!) Scar was also a fan favourite. I think a big part of it is that English-speaking anime watchers have a "subs > dubs" mindset, so they are prejudiced against English VAs from the start. I'll almost always try Japanese voices first in games or anime and often don't even check English. The reason I went with English VAs here was that Kuro was hiring British VAs and I wanted to support Asian companies not just defaulting to American VAs for everything, since there've been a lot of issues with American VAs lately. The English dub was good enough, so I stuck with it.

100% on the sub v dub thing... Such a stupid thing too, it's literally a lamer version of boys v girls lmao. But yeah totally agree! I've said it in other comments and maybe in the video but I hope as we go on they can re-record older voice lines since that's what everyone starts with. So giving TLC to the 1.0 stuff I think is really really important. The VA work while being criticized a lot, it doesn't go unappreciated! I'll be sticking with it too. Thank you for your input too!

And people who calling 1.0 voice acting is bad r wrong too. Because only Yangyang had a bad voice acting. Others r not the best but not bad either. I really like alot of EN voices more than JP like Sanhua, Aalto, Chixia, Jiyan, Changli, Jinhsi etc.

Yeah, most of the VAs I think did a great job. Maybe some tweaks here and there, but I love the EN voices because of how diverse everything sounds. Personally the JP sound of things are iconic for sure, but it's very much in line and lacking in vocal timbre diversity. The American to British for example are so different that it creates really unique experiences I don't get when listening to JP.

I personally don’t play in en dub but I am very impressed at the drastic difference in performance in 1.2 compared to 1.0. Like Yangyang doesn’t sound like she’s about to pass out from sleep deprivation 😂

The thing is, impressions are important, 1.0 ENG voice acting left a really bad impression, it happens with every game, and to that add that the new voice lines are not particularly outstanding, they're aight, at least compared to the standard people have which is star rail, genshin, zenless zone zero, and said games have outstanding voice acting, i don't know where these mfs find such voice actors fr

We'll never fully know the interworkings. I'm sure other actors that are more with the community too are probably under an NDA. But the silver lining is that they hear the feedback, improved it, and are going in a better direction. Definitely right on the first impression though since now that has seemingly stuck, and steering them away from that singular myopic idea would be a feat to marvel at. Just so odd how it went through like this in the first place you know?
