I'm sorry, but if you think Snape is a villain or a "bad guy" I feel like you've interpreted his character arc incorrectly...that is all.
This is my second "WDET" (can't even be bothered to write out the whole title) about Harry Potter and the last one is now (nearly) my most viewed Harry Potter video with nearly 10k likes!! So let's hope this one does just as well!!
I hope you enjoyed this video and if you did make sure to leave some other ideas for videos like this in the comments section down below!!

Snape is a bad person who did the right thing, whereas the marauders (with the exception of peter) are good people who did bad things. I think the difference is that James, Sirius and Remus grew up and snapped out of it, but Snape held on to his childhood resentments and acted like a dick to pretty much everyone he met and told Voldemort about the prophecy. Furthermore, he only turned good because he loved lily (which I personally think makes him worse). He is no hero, but he died knowing he did as much as he could to redeem himself but alas (earwax) he was not all that good a person.

I would not call Snape a villain. At least not in the grand scheme of things. But calling Snape a Hero is false for the same reason! He had the chance to get a fresh start. Harry didnt knew what his father had done to Snape, nor what a wounderfull person his mother was. Thats my biggest problem with snape. Not treating Harry like he knew Lilly would have liked him to have!

@croisant6142
@croisant6142 6 лет назад
I feel like people that say that Snape was “obsessed” with Lilly forget the fact that they were LITERALLY best friends for like their first five years at Hogwarts. This wasn’t just some thing where Lilly was nice to him once, and then Snape suddenly loved her. No, they genuinely cared for each other for five whole years, they laughed together, they talked together. Thats why calling Lilly mudblood is the worst day of his life. Not because he lost someone who he barely knew and was obsessed with, but because he lost not only the love of his life...but his best friend as well.

You can be obsessed with a friend. The only indicator that matters is whether he (and everyone commenting) respect Lily's ability to make her own choices. Snape never respected Lily's ability to love James. He even bullied her only child because he looked like James. That is NOT love. Snape felt entitled to Lily because of their friendship. He didn't plead for her life for herself, he wanted Voldemort to award her to him. With James and Harry out of the way she's free, right? Accepting this as love is exactly why so many women are killed by their (ex) husbands and boyfriends.
@samahissimplistic
@samahissimplistic 5 лет назад
@@majken643 Um, okay, no. Snape did respect Lily's decision to be with someone else as he stated "Lily Potter's son." He could have said Lily Evans, or simply, Lily's son, but said her husband's name, the man she chose to love. And no, he did not feel entitled to her love, as he left her alone after she said she didn't want anything to do with him. I'm sure he would have pressed on or tried to break her and James up if he felt like he deserved her. He begs the Dark Lord to spare her because he wanted her to live, not because he wanted to be with her, but simply because he loved her and did not want her, nor her family, to be killed. If anything, James is the one who seemed entitled to be with Lily since he threatens to hex her if she didn't go out with him and basically pursued her since they first met at Hogwarts. Now, I'm not excusing Snape's shitty treatment of Harry at school, but saying he downright didn't respect Lily's decision to be with someone else (his childhood bully, mind you) is factually and canonically incorrect.

I'm more like in a neutral zone when it comes to Snape. He was a brave and intelligent person and I'll never disagree with that. He had to go through a lot starting from his abusive father to the Marauders being cruel to him to losing the girl he loved. He did a great deal in the war and contributed to the defeat of Voldemort and helped Harry and everything, however, I absolutely don't agree with the way he treated his students, especially Harry, Neville and Hermione, and even though his reasoning for hating Harry is because he reminds him of his childhood bully, I don't think that's a very good reason and doesn't excuse the way he treated the others. I definitely don't like him much as a person, but he was definitely an interesting and complex character.

@@marytheviewer6712 Snape was bitter because his life was shit. He had an extremely abusive father and mother, both of which were far far worse than the Dursleys. When james fell in love with lily after he called her a mudblood, do you think he tried to get back with her? He realized his mistake, and understood that this is fair punishment. He didn't use magic to get her back. I'm sure that he was a far better wizard than james was, but did he ever attack james? No, he didn't. Now, I'm not saying that snape is a saint, he has a lot of flaws. But its all because of how he was brought up. I'm sure that he's just reflecting his parents. James was your average jock kid and he may have upset Lily but eventually he realized that girls don’t like young boys, they like young men. He matured and left her alone until she approached him and grew a relationship with him. James and Lily’s patronuses fit together while Snape’s copies Lily. James’ actions towards Lily are not considered romantic. It’s considered romantic that he matured for her because he could finally face that she didn’t like him the way he acted.

Snape was truly misunderstood. One of things he most valued was to be wanted and accepted. Hogwarts seemed to be haven of acceptance of welcoming. However, Snape was tormented by James and Sirius and grew further apart from Lily. The people close to friends were fellow death eater wannabe slytherins.This combined with incredible peer pressure shaped his life as a death eater. It truly broke his heart when Lily left him to be with his school tormentor. When Lily was killed Snape was devastated. These experiences rotted out all the happiness and hope within Snape and he took out his anger on his students, additionally angry that they lacked his patience and aptitude at the subject. Even though his life seemed ruined, Snape persevered as dumbledore’s double agent, risking his life daily even though his life couldn’t get any better. The fact that he selflessly risked his life for the good cements his place as a hero. Yes he tormented students but in end it’s our final decisions that matter not the inherent mistakes we will in our life. Feel to disagree with me but that’s my opinion.

Snape is neither good nor evil. He had his flaws; he let his loathing of Jame Potter - who had bullied him - influence how he saw Harry Potter, he did join the death-eaters, and he wasn't exactly pleasant to some of his students - such as Neville Longbottom and Hermione Granger. But, he also had many good points; he died to save the wizarding world, he defied Voldemort and spied on him, and his love for Lily Potter transcended her death. Perhaps Voldemort himself sums this up the best: '"There is no good and evil; there is only power, and those to weak to seek it"'. Snape was neither good nor evil, but he did seek the ultimate power in the Harry Potter world - love - above all other powers. While Voldemort was, and the other death-eaters were, after the power to control the world - disregarding other powers.

But dont forget that he is constantly being watched by those who are loyal to Voldemort. He is bitter and he often does rather mean and unfair things to some students but on the other hand he has to keep up the show that he doesnt like Harry and his friends (or Draco would run off telling his dad or some other death eater). His feelings for harry was somewhat mixed, but he did care for him deeply! Harry reminded Snape of both James and Lily on different occasions. But pure love is always greater than hatred even in its most venomous form. Snape's love for Lily was way more than his repugnance towards James. The part of Harry that was Lily was so special to him, that he lived to protect him. He often wanted to hate Harry because of James, but he never could.

Why should I be any different?” The Deathly Hallows, Chapter 33: The Prince’s Tale, Page 552. Everyone. *Everyone.* He called every other muggleborn Mudblood. I’m not saying he wasn’t an ok (ok is pushing it for me, but I do have a fair amount of sympathy for him) guy, but he sure as hell was a racist? Person. Don’t ignore that. Yes he changed, but he did call a lot of people Mudblood. Also, yes, he loved Lily. That is true. But loving someone is not an excuse for literally joining a hate group that kills people. I think he was an asshole, but he was a good character, because he was realistic. He was flawed to kingdom come, but he tried to sort of do the right thing.

I never thought he was evil...but I have a lot of issues with the way he treated his students and Harry. He is a bit of a bully that can't be denied. Yeah James was a bully but he grew out of it Snape didn't...or at least it took him a while. But no while his behavior bothers me I don't hate Snape or think he's the villain...because he's not. You can like a character and be critical of them. Snape was a bully in his youth and as a teacher. But he did love Lily and evidently sacrificed himself fro the greater good. he was part of the murder cult that is Voldemorts gang obvs, and referred to Lily even as he loved her a "mudblood". He is an definite grey area and I appreciate him as a character. I think his personality was rather mean overall, but his legacy was that of good intention within the story. He is neither competently good or bad because he draws from both. The Question is whether his good outweighs his bad or his bad to his good. And even then, why should we judge that? Those that knew him personally within the story will and should shame him for his personal misdeeds. But the public shall remember him a hero to the world. This duality is what makes him so interesting as a character. EDIT: Replies to this have brought up the context fro him calling her a mudblood. And while i will absolutely say he was being bullied (he and the marauders fought a lot, im only saying bullying because if it was just James being a dick then no, Snape was capable of holding his own and was just as mean back. but 4 v 1 isnt fair). However I'd like to note that theres never a reason to use a derogatory term. Im white as hell. I wouldn't start calling people the N word if i was in a bad situation. theres no circumstance where that would be acceptable. Thats why i dont think theres any way to contextual Snape calling Lily a mudblood as an okay thing.

But the worst thing is that people can only classify people as black or white, good or evil. But there is also grey, you know. Dumbledore as a teenager also shown prejudice towards muggles but nobody calls him evil. Why? Because on the beginning of the series Dumbledore was portrayed as a good guy, while Snape was portrayed as a bully. I understand you might not like Snape as a character but calling him evil is a bit too much. You can call him mean, biased, bully but not evil. Without Snape and his sacrifice, the battle would be won by Voldemort. You Know Who had multiple occasions to kill Harry but Harry was always saved by somebody, many times it was Snape. He risked his own life to be a triple agent. If he would be completely evil he would not do it all. And yes, I think he loved Lily. Obsession is much shallower than love, if he would be just obsessed with her, once she died he would not care about her child. He was protecting child of his own bully from school times, each time he looked at Harry, he remembered James, that's why he was so mean to Harry, some part of the hate he had towards James, was directed at Harry. But Snape still agreed to protect him, because he loved Lily. He protected students at Hogwarts during the war as well and other good things I probably forgot to mention. Harry told he was the bravest person he knows and named his child after Snape, do you think Harry would name his son after an evil person? I don think so.

Sure, Snape was an asshole (an understatement...) but I can't see how he's evil. As for "bad", I guess that depends on how u define "bad". "Lately only those whom I could not save," To me this shows who he really was. It implies he actively tries to save ppl whenever he can. We see this in the memory when he tried to save Lupin, he failed & cut off George's ear instead but it was still a very risky move that could've blown his cover (Although he might be smart enough to get away w/ it...). If everything he does is only for Lily like some ppl say, then why does he goes out of his way to save ppl who isn't Harry Potter? A comment (not mine) on Reddit: "We also know that if all he ever cared about was Lily and he never gave a shit about being on the good side, he would have never told Harry that he needed to die for the greater good. instead he would have told Harry to run away and stay safe for Lily's sake or something." Yes, he probably wouldn't have change sides if it wasn't for Lily (but the same goes for Regulus w/ Kreacher), however along the way he learned to become a better person himself.

There is never, ever a reason to leave a child in an abusive home. Never! Despite the fact that Dumbledore knew many friends of the Potter's that would willingly take Harry in as a child of their own, he still sent Harry to live with the Dursleys, where if Harry realised or was told he was magical there would be a chance of developing an obscurial. Think about Harry growing up with the Weasleys or Lupin.

If it weren't for the two matching patronuses I'd assume his love wasn't genuine and was instead a creepy obsession. That's the only thing that makes sense. He calls everyone of her birth Mudblood but her. I don't care if he loved her or not, that's wrong, and Lily is clearly not the kind of person to be okay with that behavior 6. Snape was definitely vindictive and a bully, holding on to grudges and hurt feelings way beyond what is reasonable, and taking his petty hatred and anger out on children who had no control or responsibility for anything that happened (Harry as a replacement for his father, what James did to Snape, and Lilly choosing James over Snape, and Neville for not being the one Voldemort decided to pursue which resulted in the death of Lilly and James when he went after Harry instead) etc. He was unfair to anyone who wasn't in his house, even to the point of deliberately sabotaging Harry to justify giving him an incomplete and hurting his grades in Snape's class, plus his reign of fear, bullying and intimidation created a horrible learning environment, making him a horrible teacher and human being. That being said, he was also extremely brave, to the point where it is almost incomprehensible the amount of courage and skill it would take to lie to Voldemort over and over again for years without ever getting found out. Because Snape knew he was risking his life every single time he answered the call to go to Voldemort, and whenever he had to toe the line of giving just enough secret information, and doing just enough of what was demanded of him, while still actively fighting on the side of Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix. He was extremely intelligent and gifted, and an extremely powerful wizard. He saved the wizarding world, and his tragic story is definitely something that has made him a character I absolutely love. As for his love for Lily, I don't really know where I stand. I mean, I see your point about him caring too much about her to result to love potions or the like, and that he did - no matter how grudgingly - accept that Lily chose James, and left them alone. That being said, he spent close to 30 years focusing on Lily, wanting to be with her, being unable to move on from her choosing James, makes it clear that he doesn't care if James and Harry dies as long as Lily lives, which would obviously destroy the woman he is supposed to love as she would have lost her husband and child... there are quite a few problematic things that, to ME, at the very least makes it a very immature and selfish kind of love. If he had listened to her when she didn't want him to associate with, and befriend, a group of people who hated everyone of her blood status, and wanted to see them be either dead or as subservient death, she might actually have ended up with Snape as he so desperately wanted - but he didn't, choosing instead to blame James for her turning her back on him when she felt she could no longer defend or try to justify his actions and choices anymore, simply because they were childhood friends once upon a time, rather than take responsibility for why he lost her. But yeah... the fact that I can love and admire him, while I hate and despise him too, is why he is one of my favorite characters of the series. I LOVE that he is so complex, and that he isn't all good or all bad, and he was very well written.
@sarah4hp

@D D Wow, you make quite the assumptions there. I was in fact bullied, and I get why it impacted Snape the way it did. It leaves emotional scars that stay with you, and it can have a huge impact on the kind of person you become. Does it in any way justify the way he treats his students? NO. You can't hide behind it, and use it to justify becoming a bully yourself. You remain responsible for your own actions same as everyone else.

@coley1033
@coley1033 7 лет назад
In my opinion, he was more infatuated with her than loved her. Not necessarily obsessed, but I don't believe he was truly in love with her-I think he was in love with the idea of her. After all, she was the first person to be nice to him ever; though not explicitly stated, it is implied his parents where abusive on some level. Basic psychology and understanding of human emotions dictates that once someone forms a connection to someone, they get attached. I think this applies to Snape and Lily. For example, his patronus is a doe because hers is, but James and Lily have complimentary patronus'-two halves of the same whole. James and Lily represent true love and soul mates, while Snape and Lily more represent infatuated love. I think Snape believed he was in love with her, but I don't think he actually was.
@coley1033
@coley1033 7 лет назад
being in love with the idea of someone doesn't necessarily mean you don't know them well enough. Snape never received any true love as a child, and i think he sort of reflected what he wanted in a relationship, platonic or romantic, onto Lily. if he truly loved her, he would have in some form cared about the people she cared about. as a young child he didn't care if Petunia got hurt (Lily always cared for Petunia, even when Petunia was unkind towards her), and he was willing to sacrifice her husband and her INFANT CHILD if it meant Lily had lived. that doesn't sound like love to me. if he was in love with her, and they somehow dated, i don't think it would have been a healthy relationship.

Nicole Yac if he would have tried to save them all and not just Lily, Voldemort would have killed Snape. Also I completely forget this part but Snape actually CONFRONTED Dumbledore on HARRY'S behalf because Dumbledore was planning on sacrificing Harry to stop Voldemort the whole time. Snape even said that Dumbledore was only using Harry for Dumbledore's own agenda and cared nothing for Harry. Dumbledore then replied to Snape acknowledging that despite the fact that Snape was harsh, he had become attached to Harry. You see the exchange in the 7th book through the flashbacks that Snape gives Harry. I think Snape DID care about Harry but couldn't get close because he thought that Harry was gonna die and didn't want to get close just to lose him to Voldemort like Lily. Snape even said that Harry had Lily's eyes and was like her too (even though he often compared him to James Potter earlier in the books). I think he tried to make himself hate Harry so he wouldn't get hurt by losing more people. It's hard to remember details like this if you only read the books once. Snape was by means perfect, but he was never evil. I have more hate for Dumbledore actually because of this exchange. The final book ruined Dumbledore for me. He was always noted for hiding details from Harry and Snape wanted to tell him sooner but couldn't...

It was not a tragic love story. Lily and James were soulmates. You could make the same argument that their patronuses perfectly complimented each other. When referring to James and Lily, Rowling says this was not coincidental. They were the love of each other's life. Lily may have been the love of Snape's but he was not the love of hers.

yea, she was easily the most hateable, but when you compare torturing students and manipulation against innumerable counts of murder, blood superiority, and attempted murder of an infant(Harry) she kinda comes second to Voldemort

I guess this was my favourite video, and Snap my character. Can You imagine the trauma he went through? Abusive father, bullying at school and then losing the only one he ever loved to his bully. It's enough to make someone a Death eater but still, He came back for the right thing, saving Harry Potter with no appreciation or expectation in return. It's crule to call me a villain. He is and will always be my Hero. Always. (if You ever lost anyone You deeply loved, You will know. And no abuser can be committed to someone for 38 years)

3:39, when Harry confronts Sirius and Lupin about James Potter’s bullying of Snape, Sirius is ashamed of it and Lupin feels guilty about it. We never really see Snape regret his treatment of Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville

Here is what I think regarding Snape: I do not like him. I do not think he is a racist, a coward, evil or obsessed, I do believe he really loved Lily and he felt REMORSE for what he did, remember that REMORSE is the only thing capable of mending a broken soul so I do believe he redeem himself and was a better man after Lily's murder, HOWEVER, I do not justify his unfairness towards Harry and his friends, how he literally bullied them and how he discharged all the hatred he felt towards James and Siruis on Harry. He had MANY good qualities we discovered at the end but they DO NOT justify his actions as an adult.

This is awesome Seamus! Thanks for making this video! I have seen some of your videos before but I had not seen this until now. Snape is certainly my fav. character as well! Snape loved Lily~ so obviously if he was for only pure bloods that much he couldn't love Lily! Also his Patronus was like Lily's so yes! He loved her! Voldemort was conceived under a Love potion so I agree with you on this as well! If he just wanted Lily to be with him he would have made a potion after all he was a potions master!

But do you also know about Dumbldore bashing? Or Weasley bashing? Especially Molly and often Ron? I see why someone doesn't like Snape (I don't as a person. He's great character) but to call him a vilan is too much compared to actually bad guy of this story

3:39, also as Lupin himself points out the fact that he knew his friends bullying of Snape was wrong but did absolutely nothing to stop it itself is an argument that he was even worse than they were.
