Growing up, I never got to see any of the arguments of why being gay could be positive from an evolutionary / survival standpoint, and I dang sure never got to see the alternatives in Bible translations, interpretation , and history either. Like a lot of guys, I grew up with it being a quick way to get bullied and excluded and called all kinds of things that were not true, and a few things that, hey, I hadn't even done yet but might want to. (Haha.) At home, it wasn't so much actively hated on as it was, so taboo that it was nearly unthinkable and unspeakable. And yet my first conscious awareness of gay feelings was at 11, about the same time straight boys start liking girls more. I now think that my parents chose not to see or hear the many clues that I was a gay boy, so they chose to ignore it and therefore they didn't have to deal with it. If they ever knew or accepted it, they never let me know. If any of my friends ever liked me the way I liked a few of them, I missed out on knowing that. I am not sure what would have gotten through to me back then, though. I wish some friend growing up, had gotten through to me so I could have had more positive experiences and ended up coming out sooner and ended up happier and with a partner, instead of how I actually bumbled through my life. -- I think there's some genetic component to it. And I think there's some nurturing / social environment part to it too. And I wonder if, if you repress a kid too much about normal expression of affection or other feelings, for the same sex or the opposite sex, if you end up contributing to a kid being gay but too conflicted, repressed, and having trouble way too long dealing with it. Could repressing normal same-sex affection (not just sexual behavior, all affection, but yeah, sex too) could that create a gay personality? Or would it only mess up an already gay personality? -- I think that in my case at least, I must have been gay before I ever knew it. My earliest awareness of gay feelings was at 11, but even in elementary, other boys made fun of me for that, and I just didn't know why or what it was. -- I wish it was just as OK for people to be gay, to like someone of the same sex and say so and ask them, as it is for the straight kids to ask someone they like. No one thinks anything bad about it. Heck, they encourage it. Even in church, people would ask me who I liked, did I have a girlfriend, who was she? And if I had, they would have been thrilled. But no one ever asks, except baiting, if a boy likes some boy, if he has a boyfriend or wants one. No one walks up and offers, hey, their cousin or neighbor, some boy, would sure be nice, the way they'll suggest some cute girl. You can't just walk up and ask some guy, without first knowing if you can say such a thing without getting run off, hit, or whatever. (Not in my experience, maybe I'm going about it the wrong way? LOL.) I want a world where the gay kids are just as welcome to be themselves as the straight kids, where a boy asking a boy is just as ordinary and good as asking a girl. The hate and fear from the phobes has got to end. It is so frustrating to be so alone so much of your life, and to miss out so much when you are first figuring it out, when all your straight friends are learning how to be couples (and fooling around) with no problem. Gay kids need this too. For dang sure, gay adults need this. Why do we not have greater acceptance? Why can't we just be accepted and live normally? Why do so many of us have to grow up or live too long protecting ourselves, being safe, or hiding it, when we really want to be open and love someone and have a partner for life? I don't get that. -- And yeah, I came out as an adult, wish I'd come out sooner, but oh, man, I grew up with it not accepted, so I grew up very conflicted, and couldn't even talk about it at home.

It's really interesting because I can see the genetic component firsthand with my family. I'm gay and my mom's brother (my uncle) was gay also. Ironically enough, my mom named me after him XD it's like I was destined to carry on the gay legacy

Very interesting. As someone who grew up in a more socially conservative household, this was always something that confused me. Evolution-wise, it always seemed counterproductive.

Going of these ideas, maybe asexuality (= no sexual attraction) also exists because of survival, not reproduction? Asexual individuals would also help raise children of others and help in the community.

Sexuality is an ORIENTATION, not a "preference" like handedness is an ORIENTATION, not a preference. A gay person doesn't "prefer" someone of the same sex anymore that a left handed person "prefers" using his left hand. Such a scientific discussion should be aware of this important distinction.

there is another hypothesis that suggests homoxual gene is passed through staight couples regardless of the other individuals so that population is maintained in the species not all couples will have babies and those that do have babies but not are able to raise them(say they died or they are not enough) a homosexual couple raises those children instead (litterally adoption)

I think i remember hearing about a study of family members of homosexuals. I think they found that the siblings had more children on average than the community around them.

Why would they only study male homosexuality? if it is genetic, than female homosexuality could be different.

Studies have also found that identical twins don't always have the same sexual preferences. That indicates that while genetics do play a part in homosexuality, it isn't the whole story.

For me, liking girls was something that came so naturally as i started realizing anyone was "cute" at a young age. I didnt think about it or question that there was any other way i was "supposed to be" until others started pointing it out.

I was raised with religion and I had no idea what being gay was and was really confused when I found myself being attracted to both genders. Luckily I do feel more confertable with my sexuality these days.

We are that male-female spiritual bridge that connects and unifies. Because it's newly accepted in this society, us gay people have believed/beleive there was something wrong with us since we don't fit the "mold" of male or female. You state that homosexuality is complex, but the theories you list seem rather simplistic and strictly genetic. I wish you would have discussed the difference between a homosexual gene vs. a gene that increases the likelihood of homosexuality. I feel as if such wording better explains how pre-natal and environmental factors may influence sexual preference. I understand this video was evolutionarily based, and the emphasis on genetics is appropriate; however, I often feel the majority of the general population overestimates the effects genes have on behavior while underestimating non-genetic, biological factors or effects of the social environment in influencing gene expression.

The only way that you could conclusively say that identical twins share sexualy preferences because of genes is if you looked at only identical twins separated at birth...

This is so good. It spoke so much sense to me. I am a teacher and I try to look at so much content that is about social contemporary issues. Especially issues that affect my learners. My theory is. That homosexuality is the natural state of human sexuality because of social roles, and heterosexuality is just a behavior you only engage in to have more gay kids.

People should watch this and get educated, especially people who believe sexuality is 100% choice.

Another possible reason for homosexual behaviour in coexistence with heterosexual behaviour is "for practice" - I believe dolphins usually mate with each other as if to practice when they do encounter a female, which would increase their fitness. (there's also a very cool video of _Drosophila_ kicking around who have been modified to behave as if they were of the opposite sex, and thus you get females trying to court males as if they were a male)

Sexual antagonism: Instead of there being a "homosexual trait" and a "heterosexual trait", there is an "androsexual trait"and a "gynosexual trait" and these genes are selected for because they increase the virility and evolutionary fitness of females and males respectively. Am I understanding that right?

People find it shocking when we tell them many of us recall having felt attracted to same-sex people when we were as young as 3 years old... which is my case. It’s basically, evolutionarily, pretty good for society, especially if hardship arises for biological parents (childbirth related death, paternal/maternal abandonment, etc.). Since humans are social, it makes sense for groups to have couples that always have an “open space” for a child that has no caregiver. It might also help for grandparents who are physically unable to keep up with children due to age-related illness. It still amazes me that it was ever treated as a hindrance 🤦‍♀️

As a gay man, thank you for lending some support to the fact that since i was outed and asked/forced to explain/justify being gay... 'i don't know, it just feels normal to me' was really all I personally could ever come up with. Never really thought there was a gay gene but due to the nature(naturalness?) of being gay, knew there had to be a connection with genetics.
